- Do You Need to Defrag Your Hard Drive or SSD
Do you want to know whether defragmenting your hard drive useless now?
and what if you have an SSD, how does windows optimization tool deal with my SSD? it uses TRIM command.

I was told awhile ago not to defrag SSD's then I was watching another computer youtuber that taught me that Windows will take care of the SSDs if you set it to do so, I set it for once and month and it does it thing, thanks for the Video Brian you have made a lot of useful tips and tricks I have benefitted from over the years, I really enjoyed when you built computers and played the games, but that was a few years back.
Thanks for watching Paul
@@Britec09show people how to defrag using the command prompt with the command line switches
Thanks for this. It started just searching "defragmentation hdd benchmark" just to see how much improvement should be and if it really makes a difference or not. I learned that yes, it makes difference but also I saw the title of this video later and after watching the video I learned that at least from Windows 10 and on also Windows take care of SSDs optimizing them. You'll never go bed without learning something new.
I remember in the beginning when SSD'S first came out this was an issue, but now it seems Microsoft has addressed the issue and improved.
This has been on the back of mind for some time, now I know more.
Thank you Brian!
Run my SSD's on a schedule, works likke a charm. I rarely used to defrag my hard drives, but trim is different and required in my mind
very informative, thank you very much!
You're very welcome!
Brian. Thanks for the video.
How much should the fragmentation be before you defrag the drive?
Wise words Brian thanks for the post
My pleasure!!
thank you for the information, good job👍
My pleasure!
A little tip ..... If you uninstall a large game on a SSD it's a good idea to go in and do a manual Trim before you install new games to that drive.
Thanks for posting
Thanks i was looking for this.
You're welcome
thanks for this, coz when im still in training, the trainor explain for hdd only not much on ssd
Love your content!
I appreciate that!
Thanks Brian, good info as always.
I run Windows "Automatic Maintenance" every few weeks, or run Win Drive Optimization manually every week. This seems to work for me. Otherwise, Drive Optimization is not scheduled to run. I basically defrag manually using the windows built-in drive optimization feature.
Thanks for sharing
But be aware every time you do that it will trim your SSD.

I don't always remember to do it. lol
Just Thanks.
Thank you.

Thanks Brian I have an external hard drive that I use as a backup source for my disk and system. However just lately when I set the backup up I get a message to say there is not enough space on the drive for the backup. However I know there is plenty of space on that drive so will this method fix the drive?
Personally I use PerfectDisk to manage my HDD. SSD's and NVME's do not require defragmentation. But with PerfectDisk I can eliminate fragmentation on my HDD.
This is perhaps where partitioning your drive could be useful instead of allowing the operating system to use the entire drive..In the linux universe the trim command is run automatically and can be configured as to when the trim is initiated.
And partitioning uses up some space
Good one mate. BTW: setting your SSD's on a Trim schedule never works. I go in once a week and do it manually. Trim is like emptying your recycle bin on an ssd. If not done often, it can take up a lot of space in the background. You will wonder why the reported free space is not available. G'day friend. 👍👍👍
Trim is important
@@Britec09 I have several external USB SSDs, some can be trimmed by "windows optimise drives" others can't and are listed as hard disk drives. Any idea why?
Well there is the new Spinrite 6.1 out very soon. From tests in development it has found SSD's are not optimized and not what the trim command does, it shows the beginning is not the same as the middle or the end. Anyhow, worth doing a separate video on it.
Spinrite is awesome
Something I'm wondering is when i used Defraggler for my 10TB HDD it says it's going to take a couple days to fully defrag the drive but then I also have automatic defrag enabled in Windows for once a week. I don't leave my PC on for a bunch of days at a time so how exactly is Windows defragging the drive if I am shutting my PC off at the end of the day? Is the defragmenting process starting again when I turn my PC back on the next day or is Windows basically NOT fully defragmenting the drive?
My experience with O&O Defrag is it defrags my hard drives better than Windows does. I run it once a month if needed.
Re SSDs, I also check my Samsung Magician every few months to make sure my ssds have the latest firmware and are set to the proper performance modes, run diagnostic checks and temps and benchmarking....

Wrong. Whether you like it or not Microsoft will defrag your SSD every month. Unless you disable it.
The optimisation or defragmentation on my SSD is disabled. If this is enabled, there is a risk whether big or small, that the life of an SSD can be shortened. I have read many blogs on this and there are mixed reactions on this particular subject.
@@MagnusPaul1976 Yes, I agree.
Windows will NEVER defrag an ssd. Defragging an ssd WILL kill it
@@SnowyRVulpix Well Windows does.
NO IT DONT
Tears ago to Defrag would take hours back when I had Pentium 1.2 .
Yes I always check my windows degfrag every month.
defragmantatin is for hdd only becous it was pysical reader not a digital space in the digital space you can get the place by the code dont fragmantation the ssd you gone dmg them
Windows 7 would auto trim a SSD, now it's still good to defrag a HDD every other week
sir have you encountered an external ssd that shows up as a hard drive when you try to optimize it?
Not lately
even if its 'hard disk drive' shown on external ssd, just leave it and dont defrag.
@@thevonbella but i can't trim it

Defragging an SSD, in theory at least has only one benefit: it makes previously deleted data unrecoverable by commercial software (not professional and ultra expensive data recovery).
Only one time , not always
Thanks for sharing
TRIM is supposed to run automatically without user interaction
That is correct
Yes, you do not need to download cleaner and optimization software on the internet as Windows has built-in tools, so don't waste your money on them. Also, Windows knows not to defrag an SSD.
Never defrag on SSD, only HDD can defrag
Trim SSD
Not all SSD support TRIM
Brian the answer is NO. Windows does this automatically.
Thanks for watching
@@Britec09 What is your opinion on McAfee AntiVirus? I love it. Very strong protection. I’ve never heard you give your opinion on the software.

forbiden to defrag ssd
Correct
DON'T defrag SSD!!!
First
Yes you are, congrats
No need for SSD any more shortens the lifespan of the drive
Trim is important for SSD
Trim doesnt shorten the life of a SSD
@@Knards I believe he means no need to "defrag" SSD's. Trimming doesn't involve writing operations, but defragmenting does, thus reducing the SSD's lifespan. Since Win10-11 can recognize if it is an SSD or HDD, it will choose the appropriate command to use.
Thank you.
