If you're based in the Philippines, you're probably aware of the SUA (sudden unintended acceleration) controversy involving the Mistubishi Montero. It was a pretty big issue a couple of years ago and it seemed to be an exclusively Filipino phenomenon
In this video, i'll talk about what I think happens in these accidents, whether it's driver error or if its equipment failure, also how to prevent it if it happens to you.

Base on my experience as a strada owner which is same lang din sa apakan ng montero sa automatic. I think yung sua is cause of both naapakan ang brake at accelerator. May mga times kasi na ganito, sa sobra tagal or comportable ko sa matic eh yung mismong foot ko nandun lang sa accelerator tapos lean ko lang kunti para tapakan yung brake. Kung yung tsineles or shoes mo e medyo malapad ang tendency maapakan mo nga brake at the same time maapakan mo din accelerator ng sabay. 2x na kasi nangyari sa akin yan. Inapakan ko brake dahil traffic tapos umugong ng malakas makena ko. Nung pinagaralan ko sa bahay ayun tama nga di ko buo naapakan brake yung right foot, left side ng tsinelas/ sapatos ko nakaapak sa 50% ng brake pedal tapos right foot, right side naman ng tsinelas/sapatos ko nahahagip accelerator. Kaya pala kapag diniinan mo apak ng sagad sa brake mo edi sagad din accelerator mo which is magwawala talaga makena mo pinipigilan ang ikot pero grabe pump kaya siguro may black smoke.

This explanation makes sense. SUA is due to Monteros's flawed and unsafe same-level pedals and transmission sticks that doesnt lock into place when it needs to, which contributes to driver's error.
That explains why Montero has almost all the SUA incidents that happened. Good point.
Means only one thing. Don't be lazy. Raise your foot and put it at the middle of the brake pedal. Stop blaming the vehicle design for laziness.
After all is said and done, its still driver error. The alleged design flaw, assuming there is one, is too insignicant to cause the acceleration. Even if the accelerator is accidentally pressed, the driver can easily shift his foot to the break pedal. It's really just people not owning up to their mistakes.
I think Sua are all human error, the design flaw is not the cause of sua. It is a contributing factor to "human error". Meaning, that model of montero is much more prone to human error compare to its counterpart on other brands. That is why they improved upon it on the new model. In the end, only montero has been infamously known or reported to have SUA multiple times.
yes, human error talga. but it seems that there is an issue with the design since it only happens on this model not in the new redesign. The one happened in Mandaluyong January 2023 is also at the same model.
Mga brrother, huwag na po nating gawing complicated ang problema na ito. Ang cause ng SUA (sudden unintended accelearation) ay defective na APPS (acceleration pedal position sensor) or acceleration pedal for short. Kapag tinapakan nyo ang acceleration pedal at walang response, alisin nyo kagad ang paa nyo sa acceleration pedal and put the transmission to PARK (P) , then switch off engine para mag reset ang APPS. Then start ulit ang engine at i- try tapakan ang accelerator pedal on PARK (P) position ang transmission for safety. Kapag hindi kagad umungol ang engine or yung RPM guage nyo ay hindi gumalaw, ibig sabihin po noon ay may problema na ang inyong APPS. Ipa- scan nyo po ang sasakyan nyo para malaman mabuti kung ano pang mga sensor ang may trouble code. Salamat po at mabuhay kayong lahat. God Bless.
Human Error po yan ganyan na ganyan po nangyari sakin. Isipin nyo po ang nasa ibaba ng "P"ark ay "R"everse at ang nasa ibaba ng "N" eutral ay "D"rive. Parehas kami nasanay na nilalagay ang gear knob sa "N" o Neutral kapag traffic tapos ibaba nalang namin ng isa para mag "D" ay aabante na. Pero dito sa sitwasyon namin ay pareho, Binaba namin ng isa kase no look na kami e pero HINDI namin alam na ang gear knob ay nalagay namin sa "P" o Park, kaya noong ibinaba ko ng isa at pag tapak sa gas ay bumulusong pa-atras at nung sa pakiramdam ko ay umaatras na ay nilipat ko muli ang gear ng madalian sa pinakang ibaba "D" sa dala ng taranta at bumulusong muli ito paabante. Kaya masasabe ko ay HUMAN ERROR po yan.
design fault yan more likely. totoo, ang driver error nangyayari talaga yan. pero kung driver error ang SUA, dapat meron din incident sa fortuner, everest, MUX, ranger, at iba pang A/T na sasakyan, at dapat halos magkakasing-dami ng incidents per model. hindi mo naman pwedeng sabihin na mas maraming engot mag-drive na montero owners. yung skill sa pagmamaneho ay dispersed sa lahat ng sample set mo. ito ay scientific insight ko bilang nag-aral ng statistics.

Sir, how do you explain the video of the Montero that was stationary but on high-rev and blowing off black smoke with the driver trying to turn it off, unsuccessfully?
If you're talking about the video of the gray montero with grayish smoke, that was most likely a "runaway diesel". That usually happens when oil leaks into the combustion chamber. The engine burns the oil and causes the revs to go up.
The thing is if it's a runaway diesel, you won't be able to turn the engine off without choking it. It will continue to run until the engine is destroyed. So in the other cases where the engine was turned off by turning the key, those were not cases of runaway diesels.
sudden unintended acceliration is not a driving error. it is due to the error of the computer program of the vehicle. before i belived that it was due to the human errror but what i had experienced in the ford eco sport of my sister in law while i was driving it, it what suddenly accelarated by its own whithout acclerating or stepping the accelarator and it roar very loud while we were travelling and it was a good thing that it was happened while we were on the middle of the road.
Because of this, im now more inclined to mt. Manual transmission. If ever SUA happens, atleast i have the clutch.
1:39 & 3:10 yan din iniisip ko dati nung nahype ng ABSCBN yang SUA na yan. Wala lang akong Monty kaya di ko masubukan. Although na try ko sa lynx na matic ng friend ko na kelangan mo talaga muna apakan ang preno bago maishift from park to reverse and neutral and vice versa. Di basta basta lilipat ang kambyo.
Ang isa ko pang theory, 20+ years na nga si manong driver pero sa MT(gear stick). Nakasanayan na niya ilagay sa N(neutral) ang kambyo(AT or MT). Then once mag start, ilalagay dapat sa reverse(but remember nasa N) so mapupunta sa D(driver). Magugulat at magpapanic na so on and so forth.
Ang 1 magandang advise sa mga AT users, try niyo gamitin left foot for braking. Practice makes perfect.
So this is a combination of driver error and a design flaw of montero, mitsubishi should recall this units and fixed this flaw in transmission shifting due to unsafe design.
Driving automatic or manual having both foot stepping the breaks or gas pedal is a No no! Been driving automatic for 15 years and 10 years manual, and ever had this incident before. Driving a matic or manual one foot is always at the dead pedal, and will only be used if clutch is needed. The other foot onto gas or breaks. Never switch gear in a automatic without stepping the breaks fully! Yes, from Park, reverse and Drive there should be a safety gear lock between those to prevent accidental shifting.

Drive with barefoot or in socks so you can feel the gas pedal and brake pedal and you also feel the car. That simple

Glx 2014 manual sa akin, usually bago ako mag 1st gear inaapakan ko both clutch at brake pedals to the metal. Naapakan ko gas instead sa brake, nag rev to the max ang engine at napa takbo ang mga tao sa gilid ng sasakyan ko🤣😅

Ngayon ko lang ito nalaman iniiwasan ko bumili ng montero automatic dahil sa SUA kaso eto lang pala yung dahilan driver error nga talaga at flawed design sa shifter na dapat di gumagalaw pag di inaapakan ang brakes.

Sa design, design issue ito. Sobra dami naman driver error. May iba ba kotse na ganyan kadami driver error? In the end it is still unintended acceleration. Design should be 'fool' proof specially on things that could cause injury or death. Swerte Mitsu hindi eroplano ito kasi 1 or 2 times lang mangyari yan grounded kaagad lahat ng ganyan model all over the world. Siyempre pinoy kaya "hindi ako ah" kaysa hanapin totoong issue.

We have toyota fortuner 2012 Gvariant depress the brake pedal muna before you shift to D gear or reverse i think Mitsubishi needs to work on that aswell as the placing of the brake and accelerator pedal thats too close BTW

Normal lang sa diesel ang may black smoke at higher rpms. It takes a few seconds to reach peak rpm pag naka drive kaya siguro hindi nakita sa mga tests kasi maikli lang ang tinakbo bago tinapakan ang preno

Tang inang yan cruise control can not be activated from a stand steal lol. You got to be at a moving speed already plus who would use cruise controll in a parking lot

May nangyaring SUA sa US last Memorial day, yun driver tumawag sya sa 911 pra magpatulong paano ma stop yun sasakyan kasi lampas 100mph ang takbo nya sa freeway, sa likod nya makikita mo sa video ng police car na sinusundan nya yun nagSUA , yun tawagan ng driver at 911 dispatcher nka record, sabi ng dispatcher tapakan mo ang brake, sabi ng driver nakatapak na daw sya pero ayaw pa din daw mag stop yun sasakyan,then sinabihan sya na ilagay sa Neutral pero ayaw pa din mag stop habang nkatapak sya sa brake then sinabihan sya ng 911 dispatcher na itaas nya yun handbrake then unti unti ng nag slow down yun sasakyan, sa likod makikita m tlga sa video ng police car na sinusundan nya yun nag SUA, na findout nila na sira yun Electronic sensor ng sasakyan ( Stuck open )daw, kahit anu daw tapak niya tlaga sa brake ayaw daw mag stop, eto nka record sa tawagan nila at nka video sa likuran nya yun police car.
But why does this happen only on monteros? When all AT, maybe MOST suvs/cars got the same pedal designs.
It doesn't only happen to monteros. It happens to other cars as well. Also as pointed out in the video, not all vehicles have the same pedal design and placement. The montero's brake pedal for example is almost the same height as the gas pedal. On other cars, the brake pedal is a lot higher than the gas pedal. Also, when driving, you really need to have a pair of driving shoes or sandals na maganda yung fit and sakto yung laki. Nung nag aaral ako ng manual I couldn't release the gas pedal cause sobrang laki ng flip flops ko and it catched sa end ng floor mat.

WALANG SAFETY FEATURES WHILE SHIFTING THE LEVER FROM P TO DRIVE. MAY FLAW SA DESIGN THAT CONTRIBUTES TO DRIVER ERROR.
Grabe naman ang sasakyan na yan, kelangan mo pa ng mga additional tricks para hindi maka disgrasya... yung nabili ko na ibang brand na ka-kompetensya nya hindi naman ganyan... sino ba naman ang papayag na bebentahan ka ng bagong sasakyan at ituturo sayo ang additonal tricks para ma operate mo ng maayos, ano ba naman yan? kahit sino hindi papayag sa ganyang setup.
