- Mowing you clover food plots is something we've all done. The question is, is it actually benefiting the food plot? Matt Dye of Land & Legacy discusses some research out of the University of Tennessee that monitored the productivity of the stand after mowing and without mowing.

Each night my mowing crew arrives and clips my clover for me. My game cameras show multiple deer feed off and on all night long, each of which can consume several pounds of clover. They are not synchronized and thus work in a random pattern but somewhat like the robotic lawn mowers, they eventually cover every plot very well.
At times the intensity of use is so great that they eat the clover literally down to the ground, wiping some of it entirely out. I live in Jackson, Mississippi which has a semi-tropical climate with very mild winters but intense summer heat. Clover actually grow for 9 to 10 months per year here as we get about 75 inches of rain too.
Yet under such lush growing conditions, there is RARELY a reason to mow my clover food plots. The deer love them so much they take care of all the mowing for me. Occasionally, if a lot of deer are taken during the 4 month long deer season, I may have to mow one time in the early spring right after deer season ends and the new lush spring growth sprouts up.
thanks for this. I have about a third of an acre backyard with whitetails. It's grass now, but Im thinking of switching it to a clover food plot. My argument in favor being that I wont have to mow.
Nice video. Every November for a cover crop in my garden, I put crimson clover out. I have a 6-foot fence the deer still get in mow it down, but by mid-april it is always knee high and thick with seeds again. Mix oats in helps as well.

Incorrect I always mow my clover at least 3 times a growing season no matter if there's weeds or no weeds , allows for more new fresh clover that is more tender and more palatable, makes the clovers root system expand and allows it to get thicker year after year , there is many benefits of mowing

@@jakeruchti1 Yup. We're not after tonnage, just the most palatable and attractive plots.
No-one seems to advise on how to tell when to mow clover to ensure the seed heads are mature enough to perpetuate the growth of new plants?
When the heads are brown
Most broadleafs I deal with just make another seedhead at a lower height after I cut them that just make them harder to cut.
Unless they are bad we wouldn’t worry about it.
I don't mow mine since all I have are plots in the woods but if it were fields I would mow

I mowed my clover may 20th. Its around knee high now. But the wheat rye is seeding out. Would you leave it alone or mow? I can't mow any higher than 6 inches.
You would be losing a lot of forage mowing knee high clover down to 6 inches, we would probably leave it alone.
@Whitetail_Properties thank you it's a lot of red clover and chicory. Not sure of this type of mgmt. For last 8 9 years everyone kept saying plant only fall plots. Which I think cost me. Appreciate you guys

@@travissmith-wz5nc i mow my clover twice a season and I haven’t seen a better looking weed free clover plot yet. I plant frigid forage pure trophy clover and am pleased with the results
Will 2-4-dB kill my red clovers ?
I just sprayed mine with 2-4D-B a few weeks ago and it did not have any negative affect on any of the clover white or red and no negative impact on the alfalfa. Unfortunately if you have chicory in your mix it will not survive.
@@jeffmcdonald2350 Correct. 2qt per acre and clover will be okay. You may see some yellowing but the clover should survive.
Is 2 4 db a post emergent? Can I plant clover and spray 2 4 db on the same day?
