Great comparison. I reckon every version of Colin McRae and Dirt has looked amazing in the era that it released. Codemasters always do really well. Now we just need a new TOCA.
HD bloom was what games used to make previous gen graphics look better, before games started using the full potential of the HD platforms. It's the reason why the original DiRT and GRiD games don't hold up as well as later entries in terms of visuals. While I don't have a favourite DiRT game, GRiD 2 is definitely my personal pick from that series, and I'm glad it was the first to be backwards compatible on Xbox One! Still wish they made DiRT 1 & 2 compatible though...
Good ol' '07, the time of undeniable bloom galore. That said, I was there from the beginning, back in '98, remember playing the thing with a cool hover cars cheat code; Some of the most fun I had with a rally game, Sega Rally aside that is; Sega Rally is legendary.
I'll never forget the last track of UK championship in the first game - night and fog. It was so dark we used to set the brightness of monitor to maximum just to see anything haha.
I'm definitely subscribing this was one of the best comparisons I've ever seen and with this game all versions were impressive for that time greetings from Macedonian in Australia

And the co-driver STILL sounds like they are giving out the directions remotely rather than from the co-driver seat of a rally car being thrown around a dirt track. I do like DiRT still though. The software house had the advantage of being located in the UK's motorsport belt. Amazing detail in the game.
Dirt 3: "Colour is so old-fashioned. A lack of colour is where it's at. Who likes colour anyway?" Dirt 4: "Oh my god, the sky is supposed to be blue!? Why did nobody tell us this? Let's use ALL the colours!"
Dirt 3 was really over-saturated with almost no vibrant colours and the bloom of the first Dirt made my eyes bleed a bit, but overall it's impressive to see the progress in a single series in 20 years, especially the few versions in-between where the graphics really improved!
Dirt 4 is fun but my laptop won't run 60fps stable. Dirt 3 is my favourite and runs 60fps stable even on high settings. Such an amazing and fun game to play. People who complain about the tint effect it can be removed by changing the value in post processing-> effect file which is located in Installation folder on pc platform. After the tint effect is removed the game looks amazing i should say its better than dirt 4 except rain scenes.

yes this is evolution ...,, but... i still waiting for an real overall improvement since we have now video cards with 16 GB ram DDR5 and 8 cores CPu etc....
I don't like, how the graphics pretty much dont change at all from one title to another. They just switch how blurry it is to hide flaws every other game. The biggest change is the look, they switch from distinct colors to a more blended in look and back to the colors to make clear this is a different game.. Everything aside the track just looks abysmal and nothing really changed about that..

1:32 It's amazing how much a difference a simple fog effect makes to visual fidelity.
. . . it's the same way they do fog in the first game. They just choose not to overapply it so you can see the track.
