  • How to fix ignition in GMC and Chevrolet trucks and cars. This is one way to fix a very complicated electrical system in the Chevrolet and GMC cars and trucks. Some are easy fixes with loose or bad electrical connections. Others involve the ignition switch itself, and others involve one of the computers that the system communicates with when starting the vehicle. The security system may have a number of issues, including the installation of a remote starter, causing the car or truck not to start. Most complaints involve a blinking security light. This is one many problems to check before exploring security system bypass or other more involved solutions discussed in other videos. This ignition defect is causing engine starting problems in many GM manufactured vehicles such as Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Saturn, Hummer and Cadillac. In this video I am demonstrating the ignition repair on a GMC Sierra 2500 HD 2001. The Chevy Silverado 1500 2500 and 3500 are virtually the same vehicles as far as ignition system fix goes. There are different types of security systems for different models and year vehicles. This problem occurs in minivans, cars and SUVs as well. There has been more reports of ignition Anti Theft defects and the security light flashing in more cars and trucks. This is one of the easy fixes for the common ignition starting problem, but GM needs to recall this issue and fix it for us. The anti theft security feature is more of a problem for the car owners, than the potential thieves. I also have had problems with the knock sensors and ABS sensors. I will post a video soon on the ABS sensor replacement. See original video when I first posted this problem here • GMC/Chevrolet ENGINE S...
    For the GMC Sierra or Chevrolet Silverado truck, there are some screws in the bottom of the steering column cover which need to be removed first. I did not demonstrate this in the video since I figured it was self explanatory. If you have noticed the "Security Light" coming on the dashboard message display, then this is most likely your ignition problem. The truck will sound like it is starting normal, but immediately shuts down. It sounds like to me that it does get spark plug ignition, but then cuts power. I am not sure it does or not, but that is what it sounds like for lack of a better description. Listen to the video to hear what my GMC Sierra 2500 (Chevy Silverado) sounded like. It took me 5 years to find out what the problem with my ignition was, since it was interment and hard to troubleshoot and fix that way. There was no engine codes being recorded in the computer since the truck thought it was doing the right thing by shutting down when the security feature was being activated. This feature was designed to prevent theft when a car or truck is hotwired. The vehicle needs the key to start, otherwise it thinks someone is trying to bypass normal key ignition. There are a few systems that must communicate perfect to allow for normal start. This video shows just one simple wire that may be causing an interruption in voltage, causing the security system to prevent the car from starting. You may have a different problem interrupting your car's computer security check.
    How to fix the ignition:
    A sensor tells the security system whether the key is in the ignition or not. This is a common feature in the GMC, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Saturn, Chevrolet and other past and present GM brand vehicles. The wire, which is connected to that sensor, comes loose or corroded and needs to be secured or cleaned. Some people have chosen to go further in the ignition unit and actually solder the connector wires in place, but this requires a lot more disassembly and time and probably unnecessary. Wedging a shim may seem primitive, but just hot gluing the plug may not guarantee you the best electrical connection. You can also go ahead and pay an auto mechanic to fix the ignition if you like unnecessarily spending hundreds of dollars. Remove the wire plug connector and visually inspect the connections and clean with electrical parts cleaner which can be found at most auto parts stores. Replace the plug as shown on the GMC Sierra truck in the video. Wedge a shim in the connection and secure the new connection with hot glue, silicon or any other glue that can be fairly easy to scrap off and remove if further maintenance is required. Replace the steering column cover and that's how you fix the ignition in your GMC Sierra or Chevy Silverado 1500, 2500 and 3500.

    If you left a thumbs down on this GMC/Chevrolet ignition fix, please let us know why so we can either make our videos better for you or help you find a solution. If you were not able to fix the ignition problem in your Chevy, GMC Buick or Oldsmobile, using this method, let us know so we can share your experiences with others. We may be able to do a video on another solution that may have solved the starting problems in different models. I have heard a lot of people having problems when an aftermarket remote starter has been installed. This should be addressed by the installer or have them remove the system. The security and passlock sensor problem is so common, it's surprising GMC has not issued a recall. Thanks for watching and happy security light turnoff to you.

      Hello i have an issue with my ignition slightly turning forward with out the key or it staying about 10 degrees forward and drains the battery. I can also pull the key out of the ignition with out shutting the vehicle off...do u advise a fix without the replacement of the ignition or without messing with the security wire?? Thanks

    After countless attempts at diagnosing this common problem, I realized this would be my cheapest alternative and was actually worth a shot. Turns out that this actually WAS the problem after many misdiagnoses. I saved hundreds of dollars by trying this as opposed to trying to take it to a shop. This worked beyond all other methods I tried and worked instantly. I appreciate this video and for the help on such a random and aggravating problem. Truck started right up with no security code. The dash got a bit damaged while doing this, however it was very minimal. I was even able to fit the shim in without removing the cover totally. Very helpful video. Glad I found this before trying anything else that would have ran me a fortune.

      JASON SMITH Thanks so much for the comment! I am so glad this has helped people as it's such a simple fix, if it's actually the problem. Car dealers are charging people insane money to diagnose and misdiagnose problem costing people so much money. It's a shame people are getting robbed at the auto repair shop for the cost of a single toothpick. Thanks again for posting!

    I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this great video, after watching a bunch of others this video seemed most in line with what was happening on my 2002 Chevy Suburban 1500 5.3L. I had read a bunch of posts from people with a similar problem, and some had spent $1,000.00 and more trying to fix different things - Fuel pump, crank position sensor, fuel pump relay, ignition system, etc. and some of their trucks sit in a garage to this day unfixed! Your VAT wire connector servicing brought my truck back to life ! I can't thank you enough !

    I had the exact problem with my 03 Blazer. I took the idea a step further by removing the 3 wires from the connector and very carefully pinched them with needle nose pliers. This made a very snug and positive contact on the pins when I reinstalled the connector into the sensor. The truck started immediately and stayed running without an issue. Thank you for the great info in the video.

    8 years later and your straight forward, clear and concise video is still helping people. THANK YOU for taking the time to post the knowledge. 2000 Chevy Silverado 2500 6.0 Vortec with 216k + miles and been haunted by this baffling intermittent issue for nearly half of those miles. After all the aggravation I doubted that I had found the solution (and such a simple one at that), but after applying the suggested fix and turning the key it took about half a crank and under 1 second for the engine to fire and make me a believer. I can't thank you enough. May God Bless you.

    You are amazing! My truck did the same exact thing the other day and has been stranded in a walmart parking lot for the past 3 days. Me and my dad tried everything and were about to give up and tow it to a dealership to run expensive diagnostic tests on it, but after hours among hours of research i stumbled across this video and decided to give it a try. And it worked!! You guys are live savers!!! I have a 2004 gmc sierra 2500hd 6.6L LB7 Duramax btw it worked on this also!

      Kyle Geyer The first time it happened to me I was in a WalMart Parking lot and called my dad to come get me! LMAO!!! After going into the store and waiting, it started when he got there. Figures right!? lol that's when I realized mine had something to do with the antitheft system. After trying so many things and tracing wires, I found this wire was intermittently losing connection. I am so glad this video is helping people! Thanks for the wonderful comment!

Touch it to the Positive terminal, (this supposedly resets the computer) (may have to use a screwdriver as it is kinda short, to make the contact) Install the negative cable again... VWAAALAHHH...!! Not had a problem starting truck since I repaired the ignition like in this video. No trouble starting truck now and I don't have to wait 10 minutes for the truck to start anymore.

My truck pulled this crap every week, when i pulled the ignition cover off and looked at the wire it was so loose it was just ridiculous but I put two small layers of duck tape around it and plugged it back in and it was real snug and it cranked right up. I couldn't even lock my doors becuz the security system wouldn't let it crank, but so far so good I haven't had it do it again so far anyway, but so far so good! if that didn't help check out this page...this saved my car
    The security, antitheft or lock picture/icon is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM (Theft Deterrent Module). These 3 parts are in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, then these parts are sending signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, the car misinterprets this as an attempt at theft and goes into antitheft mode. The car thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. This is why the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle. This link explains it pretty well.

      @How2Auto_truck_car_fix_repair  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jodi Adams This is very true. I found one of the problems, but basically anything that causes a slight change in voltage or shorts can cause the computers believe the car is being hotwired therefore we have to sit for 10 minutes for the system to reset. This is a GM problem and has yet to be recalled. I was luck that I had a problem in one connector. I am finding out more and more that it's Anti-theft malfunction.Thanks so much for the comments. Please feel free to lend any knowledge and solutions in this feed so other GM vehicle owners can get some help. I have heard from people that the dealers are replacing the computer modules and charging insane amount of money only to find out sometimes that wasn't the problem.

Good ol fashion bare key...so then...how have I been able to start it all these years to just randomly start and still out when it wants...lol. I will give the toothpick trick a shot and see what happens...but like I said...my key is a bare key...no chip like my other car keys..

    Thanks a lot! It solved my problem! Actually this is the second time it has done this. The first time I had it towed in. They mechanic said it started every time he tried it. I finally just brought it back home. But I did find your video then and went ahead and wedged a toothpick in there. It has been running for the last year or so, no problem. then this morning it did the turn over and die thing. Tried it several times and it wouldn't start. I needed to leave for work so I got in a different vehicle. When I got home this afternoon, it started, no problem. But the automatic reset of the security system (after so much time) explains that. It also explains why it always started for the mechanic. Now I need to find a way to quickly reset the security system. Maybe unplug and clean the connections too.

    Also another helpful tip (If you are locked out) if the truck does not register with the key and is immobilized there is a cheaper solution than being towed. A spare key (chip or not) will get the truck moving. The security code will exist still but not cost you a towing fee, or leave you stranded. Keep the spare key with you, as you will need both in the event that this happens. Use the spare while keeping the main key in range. It should get you started up enough to get home and deal with the mess in a cheaper more convenient environment.

    My 2001 Yukon XL Had the same issue. At the same time, it would also (intermittently) not do anything - no lights, no power, not able to start as if the battery was completely dead. Yet let it sit for a while (sometimes a few days) and it would start... with or without the dying effect mentioned in your video. This appeared to have fixed the dying, but we'll see if it also was the cause of the complete electrical failure.

    Your video and starting issue is exactly what my 2001 Silverado 2500 does intermittingly. Ok while I didn't use a toothpick your video did help me to resolve my 2000 GMC Dually truck Security light on and not running. The looseness of the connector doesn't really seem to be the problem though, rather a very light oxidation on the contacts (it is over 15 years old after all).... the Passlock system wasn't able to connect to the sensors in the ignition switch so it must have assumed there was no authorized key (and it didn't log any fault codes I might add!). Simply unplugging it then plugging it back in 2-3 times and the problem appears to have been resolved! The Security light now goes out in 5 seconds and the truck starts AND runs normally again. Yay!
    If the problem re-occurs I'll get some electrical cleaner spray and spritz the connector with it real good then plug and unplug a few times to clean the contacts further. But for now, I at least know where the fault was and how to get it going again (though not a lot of fun getting that steering column cover off... that was 99% of the work I swear!).
    No additional expensive parts needed, that's the best thing of all in my book! Who knew?

    I have a 98 1500 chevy express van.. the battery died.. I jump started it.. then I couldn't turn the motor off!!! I could turn the key and take it out..and the motor wouldn't die. I went and blocked the intake with a rag and plastic bag.. took a while and it finally killed the motor.. so ignition switch ? or just change the ignition lock?

    • @How2Auto_truck_car_fix_repair
      @How2Auto_truck_car_fix_repair  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mine was the fuel line when I had those symptoms in later truck. There was a pinhole in the fuel line that allowed fuel to depressurize and return back to tank. Cranking three times is priming it. Just turn the key forward three times without going to the crank position and it should start right up. Then in inspect the fuel lines.

    Brian, I'm having the same problems with my 06 silverado, I would get a knocking sound at 1st, sounded like the starter. I replaced the starter but still had the same sound. Now it won't even click. I get nothing. I know its not my starter because I'm able to turn on the truck with a screw driver directly from the starter. All my fuses are good I tried waiting for the anti theft and still noting. I don't know what else to try.

    Sometimes this will work, other times the security system or ignition cylinder is shot and either requires bypassing the security feature completely or replacing the faulty parts.

      @josephpetrilli9312 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ReCkLeSsErr0r I didn't have this problem starting till I replaced the key cylinder. My original problem was the key wouldn't always want to turn so replaced the cylinder from acdelco with two new keys, been thinking maybe keys needed to be coded of something. Should I try this toothpick trick

    • @ReCkLeSsErr0r
      @ReCkLeSsErr0r 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joseph Petrilli If the key cylinder being replaced started the problem, i'd imagine the circuit in the cylinder is not functioning correctly... Or something has gone wrong with the actual passkey anti theft system..
      Try replacing the cylinder again, if that doesn't work... The only solution is to bypass the system entirely by wiring in resistors. Plenty of YT tutorials for that.
      Which sadly may not still even fix the problem if the actual anti theft system is at fault.

    I have a 2003 chevy silverado pick up and it starts sometimes and sometimes not. I tried the trick you suggested and it didnt cure it. I even pulled the iginition switch out and cleaned the contacts inside and out. Sometimes it starts and yet again sometimes not. What gives? It does not give off any fault codes and when it runs it runs great. I would like to make this truck dependable and start whenever I need it to. Any suggestions? UPDATE: I pulled the starter off and replaced it. Before that I checked the wiring and I had 12 volts from the main wire and 12 volts from the solinoid wire when in the start position. My truck still would not start. After cleaning up the wires and putting in the new starter it started rite up. I took in the old starter and they tested it. It passed twice however there have been issues with the solinoid working then getting warm and not working. With the truck having over 277k miles it was time for a new starter anyway. I did keep the old starter for parts.

      So glad it worked for you. Seems like a strange thing to go wrong, but seems to be very common and many "professional" shops and dealers have trouble finding this problem. After hundreds of dollars in diagnostics, they still leave you hanging when all they had to do is look this up on TH-cam! 🤣

    • @How2Auto_truck_car_fix_repair
      @How2Auto_truck_car_fix_repair  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With power windows it's usually one of two things. More often in my experience it's the switch panel. The other possibility, it's the motor. I've changed more switches than motors but could go either way. If everything was working perfectly fine and then one day stopped, I'd guess switch panel. Always check fuses first. If window was straining over time and got worse, then probably window motor.
