  • The neutral game or footsies, is a hard concept to grasp at first, but in this video I explain it concisely and clearly in under 11 minutes using Street Fighter V - Champion Edition as an example so that it is easy for beginners to understand. Covering the very basics of the mind game and the three style structure mentioned by Machabo's Guilty Gear Article. Bruce Lee also in "Enter the Dragon" mentions the flow of a fight and how we react to our opponents and its a useful quote to explain approaching this hurdle in fighting games.
    Machabo article on fundamentals:

Just the basic understanding of how frames work. How you can tell what jails into what, etc. I understand frames coming from Tekken and mk. But I can’t even tell what start up on moves are with the frame data thing.

right now it’s knowing when the change up my pressure accordingly with what my opponent is doing. i always forget to grab if they’re blocking too much, keep my strings tight if they’re mashing, etc. it’s something i need to get in my head both for this game and DBFZ

“I do not hit… it hits by itself” - Bruce Lee on being a true martial artist. The same quote can be used to describe what some in the FGC call a flow chart bot

I have to read some of Bruce Lee’s books some day. He had a very clear way of thinking.

This has been very useful in helping me understand neutral in general. My instinct is to go in and PUNCH. Playing Multiversus and I want this info will help.

Very useful tips. I've been really realizing the holds in my neutral so I'm gonna try to use this to refine.

Really enjoying these meaty videos. Analyzing gameplay is definitely worthwhile, especially if you can cut down on the time-consuming editing.

I just barely started taking SFV seriously and I been getting smacked up lol. I personally think I just have to play the game more. I'm facing people that been on this game for a while, and besides Cody (my main) I dont really know how anyone else plays. This did help me a lot tho!

So basically if you can't whiff punish, the whole gameplay falls apart. SF5 is particularly unreactable to me in terms of gameplay (except of course for jump-ins and some slow moves). I don't have this problem elsewhere. Spent whole year in gold, can't see any prospects or hints of how to get better.

Just FYI: that clip from Enter the Dragon is actually a deleted scene that was put back in a few years ago. The entire deleted scene also better explains why he breaks the mirrors in the final fight scene.
