seeing fighting games through your eyes is eye opening and i felt love for the game just watching this vid. (cuz i could tell you love it) your communication is clearer than water, a rare skill. thank you. seems important that even when practicing these whiff punishment elements, you gotta address jump

Subbed. I've already seen your great play on nlbc, but you get into the nuts and bolts of footsies, invite us to come with you, have an approachable yet scientific method AND demolish Arturo like THAT while not trying to take him apart, but by only following the step you are on?!?! SUBBED!

I dont really understand how the grasp of somebodys timing is supposed to come from the first lesson of the footsies guide, and it also didnt look like you walked backwards at all unless u were baiting a throw and the information that they did fHP after the low shot didnt seems to come into play at all. Not trying to hate I just dont really get where the info from the guide was implemented here

I don't mean to complain, it's a nice thought to make a video like this, but I don't think this is very useful as it's currently being presented. Speaking as a player who doesn't understand or latch onto the rhythm of most opponents, this is kind of just a video of reading an existing document out loud with little to no modification, and then in your match with Arturo, nothing transpired anything like what you had just talked about. There wasn't a single moment where you walked forward, walked back, and then whiff punished a button. Sure, the scenarios were created by you standing within Falke's poke range, which forced Art to take action or commit to inaction, but in terms of doing what the footsies book was talking about, none of that stuff ever happened. You didn't do extended bouts of zoning and then suddenly move forwards to create panic, you weren't a charge character, the only debatable moment is when he was close to stun on the last round and he chose fw,hp to occupy that space which you jumped over, but that still wasn't forward walking into back walking. To me, you just started reading him in completely different ways than were discussed in the chapter of the book and destroying him while just saying "I understand his rhythm".
I thought the point of this was to teach people how to understand rhythm, not to just show how it looks when someone skilled like you does understand an opponent's rhythm. The one deliberate observation you spoke on was Art's frequency with which he would do a certain sequence into fw,hp, and that wasn't even one of the things that you punished in the matches. The only thing I got from this video is "if I'm patient, enter poke range and repeatedly force actions without taking large risks myself through walk blocking or light poking, and observe the actions the opponent takes over time in given situations, trying to identify as many clear patterns as possible, I'll just magically get the rhythm and timing" and that is neither something new to me that I haven't heard before, nor does attempting that allowing me to get people's rhythms in the same way I see skilled players just see to see the matrix when they play.

Ill take a stab at this one, unfortunately, most footsies ability has to do with 3 things:
      1. Reaction time. Its no coincidence that punk who is renowned for having the highest reaction time of a top player in the fgc, is also known to have the strongest footsies.
      2. Overall intelligence. Fighting games are largely pattern observation simulators. The more nuanced the patter, the harder it is to grasp and the harder it is to beat. This of course leaves many things out, but largely they are pattern based.
      3. Actual game knowledge. This is where Zaf comes in. Unfortunately, he cant do anything to really increase your skill in the 1st 2 things. Your reactions are largely set once youve gotten pretty used to a game. Your ability to see new patterns wont get any better. However your ability to recognize old patterns, will. This is experience, but it shouldnt be confused with actual overall intelligence or brain power. Sometimes a pattern is simply too big for a person to be able to figure out, especially “at the board” so to speak. Think of it like PI. You may have it memorized to the 2nd, 3rd or even 10th digit, but what if the pattern your opponent is using, is PI to the 50th power? Well… you lose unless you have the mental power to grasp such an indepth flowchart… a flowchart that changes from second to second and minute to minute and has many variations depending on overall circumstance as well as how previous attempts have fared. Maybe your opponent only needs to go to the 6th power to beat you. You never even get beyond that… but even if you did… your opponent would be able to answer you until you got to the 50th power at which point they would be forced to “start making stuff up again” and adapting to you instead of vice versa.
Tldr, theres more than just game knowledge at work here. You need the talent as well.
