Dude thanks for this video, I just found another way of getting different tones, and it worked!!! Got some decent old '70s 'Marshall' tone (for GarageBand and a Focusrite lol).
I’d prefer to hear a crunch demo because with this demo you can’t even tell what guitar might have been used. I’m a strat guy and prefer hearing the characteristics of the guitar rather than a distorted ‘could be any guitar’ sound.
I've never gotten a good distortion tone from the built in effects in logic, but have gotten decent tones if I run my guitar through my pedal board into logic.
Yeah the gain staging is really not very forgiving with those amp sims. I tend to not prefer their dirty tones either. Been using the Waves PRS Supermodels of late and I'm really happy with them. Just wait for them to go on sale again if you don't want to spend $100+ - I got 'em for like $35. Maybe I'll do a review vid of them, cause they really are something, even just out of the box, so to speak
Compared Bias Sims in my Spark 40, it’s not even a question. My saving grace is the ODR-1 plug-in to tighten up the sounds. The amps also really accentuate mistakes in that upper midrange
I'm liking this so I can watch this when I get home. Lately, I've been using only two methods on Garageband. Method 1: Guitar>>Fender Mustang Micro headphone amp>>>USB>>Garageband>>>Audio Recorder. Method 2: 2. Guitar>>Audio Interface Input>>>Clean Setting>>Warm British (stock setting). For both methods I use the Compressor plugin (not the pedalboard version), and I use the stock "Electric Guitar" setting. It makes the sound fuller and louder. Then I use some free VST's from Chow. I mainly use Chow Tape for a nice tape emulated saturation for extra warmth. For Reverb and Delay I either use the stock Plugins like Platinum Verb, or Valhalla Supermassive if I want to go cinematic and ambient. For overdrives, I actually like the pedalboard. I usually stack the vintage overdrive with the smiley fuzz face. What do you think of this setup?
I think if it sounds good to you, it sounds good! The ear is the best judge here. Your signal flow generally looks ok. The only thing I'd say is to be careful with compression, especially on distorted tones. Make sure you level the output of the compressor to the input so you get a better sense of what's happening. The human ear makes the connection of louder = better, so get rid of that bias to make as objective a call as possible. Thanks for commenting!
@@JustWriteMusic actually I never thought of that way. To look at it as amp + cab, (I'm a noob in this digital world). Like what you said, look at it as analog gear. I just tried out Amplitube 5 again but turned off it's cab and used garageband's cab instead. The Fender Twin actually sounds good now!
@@JustWriteMusic one last question so should I treat the signal flow exactly like a pedalboard? I have a lot of VST's that I prefer to use for effects. Anyone else having trouble getting STL to work? I downloaded it and installed it but I don’t know how to get it running on logic… /: Anyone know how to fix?
Awesome! I have been using Ignite Emissary with their NadIR cab simulator; which I don't quite fully understand; but, I believe you can sample bits of guitar riffs and it will simulate the tone somehow? I used it and downloaded IR's to get pretty close to Metallica tones. But... I added the GB amp simulator in-between the Emissary and the NadIR, and set it up similar to in the vid and it sounded great. I toggled between the amp sim (amp off, cab only) and the NadIR, and discovered that when both are on, it sounds even more metal. :)
I’ve encountered a problem. When i export my song into a wav file, my guitars are back to acoustic, and I haven’t bypassed the plug-ins. Have anyone else encountered the same problem?
@@JustWriteMusic I solved the problem. I still think My guitar Sound sucks compared to what I hear online. Do I need to upgrade my “midi box”? I dont know the exact word for it
I'm gonna be the contrarian here. If you can't get a good sound out of the logic amp sim then you don't know how to get a good sound out of any amp period. I can get really really great tones out of it. The problem is you don't know how to gain stage every part of the process. If it doesn't sound good then the problem is you. Not the software.
Hey Dude. Thanks for this comment! Honestly, I think you're totally right. I admit I could've made further clarification on that point, gain staging is ultimately the issue at hand with quality and will make or break the sound of an amp sim. Don't get me wrong - those amps are absolutely usable and I've released songs using them, even with high gain distortion, the ones I particularly criticized in this video. Everything is ultimately up to our skills and our preference. And this free Ignite amp is a higher quality hi-gain amp sim than the stock options, while giving guitarists a free toe-dip into the world of 3rd party plugins and IR samples.

Yep, I've scrolled through all the options just like you did many times. The problem I have is that after I listen to over 100 different cabinet simulations and mic placement combinations, I can't remember which one I liked best. Somebody should make a plug-in called "Dial-a-Tone" where you can just pick which artist you want to sound like. John Mayer, BB King, Albert Collins, David Gilmour, Santana or ???
Haha they kinda do have that, but it’s real expensive. You can buy profiles for a Kemper or settings for an AXE FX. Many artists are coming out with their own amp sims; I believe John Petrucci just released his. I recently picked up the PRS SuperModels on sale from Waves and it sounds awesome 🤘
I think Positive Grid Bias has exactly that! If you can find an isolated guitar audio section, even if only 1 or 2 seconds, it will analyze & give its best guess as to what the simulation match is. No, it's not cheap.
There are presets you can use but for trademark reasons they don't put the name of the group. For example to get something close to U2's Edge you can use the Dublin delay preset, I'm pretty sure there is a list of the groups and the matching preset names somewhere out there.
I tried to do this but somehow I end up with bad sound, how do you setup your tracks to record with your amp thru xlr!? I even have a little split box!
I use that same amp with the ignite nadir in garageband. I use pedalboard for delay and fuzz. Do you know if the signal goes through the ignite plugins first, then through pedalboard? Or the other way around? I have gb version 10.0.2. Not sure if theres a way to rearrange the signal path.
Nice! It all depends on the order of the plugins. Think of the signal chain moving from top to bottom. If the pedalboard is placed on top of the amp, it’ll process the signal before the amp does. It’s not as straightforward as logic, but you should be able to rearrange the order of plug-ins in the same area where you add them.
