  • Lunges are a great functional exercise to used to strengthen your legs and challenge your balance. In particular this exercise targets your muscles around your knees and hip which are vital muscles used to function in everyday life activities. It is not as simple as it seems and therefor it is important to know how to do your lunges correctly and safely. This will ensure you are not putting unwanted strain on your knee joints and unwillingly do more harm than good.
This video will walk you through the steps to do the most basic lunge.
The key components of doing a lunge correctly that this video shows are:
    1) Take a large step forward
    2) Ensure the weight through your front leg is transferred through your heel (keep heel on the ground)
    3) Keep the knee of your front leg behind the toes of your front foot. (there are benefits to move through full range where your knees go over your toes but this is for specific cases)
    4) Slow controlled movement is key
Start off doing 10 repetitions with one leg, then switch to the other leg. Always gradually build up your load. As we have mentioned before load management is key
