"We took their top five to seven plays that showed up in every game last year: a reverse, crossing routes, tailback screens- and I'll be danged if in the first four or five plays those things showed up," -Lance Guidry, UM Defensive Coordinator
The scale of incompetence at my alma mater is astonishing right now.
beautifully stated.
Is this a real quote!?!
@@davidfsanabria yes
Yep it's insane but true Florida ran the same doggone plays that were scripted time after time
I have been looking forward to this video since the 3rd quarter of the Miami game. Glad you're back this season.
It's good to be back!
Florida's offense huh? This shouldn't be a long video 😂
I am an old school Hurricane fan - I was at the Orange Bowl for the Gator Flop as a boy with my father - but this was the best breakdown of a football game I think I have ever seen. You have produced amazing content. I am looking forward to following your analysis this season. Keep up the great work.
I am greatly honored by your words! (I was a Hurricane fan as well, as I grew up in Coral Gables)
@@TheGatorNationFootballPodcast you clearly know X’s and O’s. Would you say the problem is the scheme or Graham’s inability to make throws on time? Cause your video indicates the receivers had separation Al lot but he just didn’t make the read or throws when he should have.
As a former WR this is so frustrating on those post routes. That’s how we get paid, me and the QB would have some words.
You wouldn’t be Kelvin Kight, would you? If so, much love, and I wish the old ball coach was still in charge with guys like you. Where are you coaching?
@@lewispetzold7481 lol no but I grew up 30 minutes from Gainesville. Had it not been for a gator camp I wouldn’t have gotten a full ride to play at Bowling Green State University.
The ineptitude of this JV offense is just staggering!
Not expecting to see anyone play Florida with fewer than 7 in the box. Great review and what a waste that Napier hasn't been forced to sit down and forced to watch and listen to your film.
I’m pretty sure this is what Napier was referring to with his basement comment. Yeah yeah it looks pretty obvious when you see it … but Napier is next level, man. He just KNOWS that play that never works will work if his players could just execute it once. So he’ll keep trying over and over and over again.
@@philipmarsh3522 Sounds like a Jimbo Fisher comment from last year!
Man idk if Billy can really coach on this level
He obviously can't. That's why he'll be fired after this season.
I was at the game, thanks so much for your concise and on point breakdown, very painful to watch again but greatly appreciate your content.
🙏
Etienne made the right move transferring
I mean sure but he will always be a coward for choosing georgia
Princely too. And I don’t blame him because some gator fans criticized him, very unfairly in my opinion. He was the only good thing on the line last year, the nitpickers are so wrong. He made the right move. Napier is a disaster and I saw it in 2022.
You such a great guy make the videos very simple
Thank you!
God this team is coached like a HS team and this proves it
this is straight up a high school offense with high school level execution. terrible blocking, mertz’s worst game, and terrible play design.
I absolutely hate this offense.
The hitch offense.lol
You're a legend James thank you for all the detailed analysis. Love the pod too
🙏🙏
Def subscribed to the channel and can’t wait to watch all of the breakdowns you do for this season!
Welcome aboard!
Thank you for the videos! I know you've mentioned doing a Miami Dolphins offensive breakdown..... It's hard to believe McDaniel and Napier come from the same Shanahan Tree.
FIRST! I haven't watched it yet but YIKES lol. I already know it is going to be terrible but thanks so much for dropping this video. God Bless you for doing this!
You are most welcome!
I like the 5 wide plays but why doesn't Napier actually use 5 WRs. He never even puts 4 WRs in the game at once. His version of 5 wides involves a back and a tight end. This makes it easier for the defenders. You want to create mismatches. You want a safety or nickel having to cover a fast WR, not some slow TE. Even the back doesn't have the route running skills or hands of a WR.
I have asked that q many times.
Just wondering if the UF Football Program has ever approached you about an analyst position? You most certainly have the chops for the job.
They have not.
@@TheGatorNationFootballPodcast Why would they? Not like they are gonna change anything.
I appreciate all the work you do and find myself trying to figure out what the heck is going on, based on your videos, as I scream my guts out in the swamp. I was fortunate enough to have been in Sanford stadium for the 95' game and this is how the puppies must have felt. It was awful and the most embarrassing loss I've ever attended at home.
Thank you so much for the kind words!
i knew when it happened live that miss to badger early was bad, but dang man...i didnt know it was 15 yards off bad lol i know peewee QBs that hit that throw...
Billy's main downfall will be his unwillingness to bring in an offensive coordinator. It's a shame because we could have had something good.
We at least would have had a better chance.
Now that billy can talk to mertz do you think he was confusing mertz decisions.. just curious if that affected his apparent huge drop in qb decisions or did that injury reffect him
Clearly, whatever was going on, it wasn't working.
I’m a Miami fan and must say this was excellent. Well done.
Preciate you!
thanks for the video
Great video as always brother!
Preciate you!
Hitches to the sticks... Wonder if Billy has any other 3rd down pass plays
@scottperry8360 lol..he has ONE other route and that is a slant. That is it though besides those two.
@@henrysimmons6767 don't forget the smash concepts that are poorly designed where he runs bunch to the boundary and doesn't pull the coverage inside at all with the hitch.
Bro, this is gold.
Preciate you!
I've been waiting on this video since Saturday night
The wait is over!
Doing the lords work 🙏
Great split zone concept breakdown. This play should have gone for 15-17 yards in my opinion. M.J. Should pressed that run more to the deep safety. It would have taken him past the guy in the flat and also giving himself a two way go on the guy who made the tackle. Even if he still makes the tackle he would have been 15 yards down the field instead of 11.
Yep folks believe it. The guy who's orchestrating this bowl of noodles offense is making 7 million dollars per year. Think about that next time you don't wanna get up and go to work 😂😂😂
The plays are there but Mertz isn’t hitting them.
Great video as always - really appreciate the time & effort you put into these. It can only get better….right…right?! Ugh, brutal. Go Gators!
It doesn't have to get better, haha.
How much do you think a dual threat QB will help this offense? Feels like defenses can just ignore Mertz as a runner and that severely hampers what Napier is trying to do.
Exactly, but most fans don’t understand that.
@@thomasjohnson7802 Ya, it seemed pretty clear that the drop off in the rushing game from 2022 to 2023 was in large part due to the loss of Anthony Richardson as a run threat. He opened up so many hole for the RBs by pulling defenders. Thats why I’m not writing Napier off yet. He’s handicapped with Mertz back there. If he can hit 4 wins, with one of them being UCF, I want to see what he does in 2025 with Lagway. I’d like to see Lagway now, but I understand that it’s a lot to ask of a true freshman to carry a team through this schedule.
We run the pistol along with lots of run fakes, jet sweeps, orbit motions, and 12 personnel. In theory, it should help. But what hampers Billy's offense, imo, is Billy.
@@acct5910Billy the one who got Mertz he should’ve stayed with brown
@@Lett3800 Max Brown can hardly cut it at Charlotte against AAC defenses, he wasn’t the solution.
Fact of the matter is that it was a big deal when AR decided to go pro, and he missed on Rashada. Napier wanted Grayson McCall for 2023, but he wasn’t academically eligible to transfer. Its always been a waiting game for Lagway to show up and get up to speed.
You know how good this content is? I watch it no matter how depressing it is.
🙏🙏 Preciate you!
James - I love your reviews. Unfortunately I cannot watch another minute of the farce that is Gator football under Napier. We all campaigned for a new OC in the off season but Billy knows best. I hope if I am ever so lucky as to attain a 7+ million dollar job I will not be so f*cking ignorant that I ignore my constituency's pleas and continue to repeatedly parade my incompetence on the biggest of stages. Thanks!!!
Tough times to be sure.
It's the Lagway era PLAY LAGWAY!! for any chance in other games. This offense needs a mobile QB. Mertz should coach up DJ from the sideline. On defense searcy, collins, pyburn, LJ, and gumbs jr should be on the edge more on rush plays. The D-line has to step up seems like they don't prepare for the opposing QB. Napier got the talent but can't prepare a team....I guess another two years away with a new head coach smdh.
Great video, from watching your breakdown you can honestly say Napier made some calls that should have got touchdowns and lack of execution ruined the calls. Mertz definitely looked shaky but I guess that’ll happen when you’re used to getting rid of the ball quick and early.
It’s time for Lagway, I’d rather have him make freshman mistakes while gaining experience versus a 6th year guy still doing the same things.
Mertz having a bad day, was a surprise. The predictable play calling was not. How many adjustments can we make in the next 10 days. Great analysis.
Thanks!
It's time. Napier and Strickland need to go. I don't care how well the other sports are doing under Strickland, football makes more money per year than every other sport at UF combined. The players deserve better. The university deserves better. The fanbase deserves better.
Excited for the video, but wish it was under different circumstances
The OLINE held up In the first half and was shaky in the 2nd Half, Schematically This Offense is Terrible Under a Game Manger Type QB, You truly need a Special Qb to be successful in this Offense
A miracle even...
Successfully offense at every level is about getting your playmakers in space. Billy is content with running into a loaded box.
Pop warner football .
That analysis of the right tackle's hand positions had me dying. Lagway looks great though, based on this game it's hard to argue he shouldn't be starting despite his youth/inexperience
These damn hitches are killing us. This guy offense is so simple.
I thought maybe James had give up and become a monk. Glad to see he's still hanging in there.
Still here!
Love the pod and the content but I have to say it lol…You know it was a rough game because the hair isn’t as tall as it was last season too 😂
🤣🤣
Pop warner football team could beat us .
We literally have the dumbest head coach in college football…
And somehow our athletic Director was even dumber in giving him one of the greatest travesty of a contract, and especially the exorbitant buyout.
2nd Play - Canes gave a look of only 7 and right at the snap(6:22) slid into an 8-man box throwing off the called blocking scheme. That's why they play blew up!
Great content per usual. That Mertz miss to Badger was agregious...sigh.
Preciate you!
Sorry I can’t watch this again but I’ll give it a like!
Player development and play calling seems to continue to be a challenge. I believe Miami came out after the game and said they knew every play we ran. We have talent, but we are losing on scheme and execution. Not great when you had an entire offseason to bring out something for this huge home opener.
At 6:56…wr didn’t block the Olb either
Nice breakdown helix!
Great review. Was looking forward to this all season….til the first game 😂
Right?
You must be shaking your head constantly while reviewing this film.
💯
Been waiting on this!!
With the poor throws on the post routes…can we assume this is how he is coached to throw these routes?
We can say for sure that we struggle to hit the deep ball when Mertz is qb.
Love your work brother, but I just don't have the ❤ to watch it this time lol 😂
Excited to watch this even though i know it's going to be painful
I was looking forward to your take on this catastrophe. 😂
Haven’t watched it yet, but do you think people are overreacting saying that DJ Lagway should start from now on even when Mertz gets healthy?
If you are going to go 3-9 with Mertz why not start the Lagway era?
lagway brings more versatility into a very boring offense. mertz cant run or throw deep. at this point why not
@@rickyrougs I completely agree
@@charlesbartlett2569 as long as Lagway doesn’t choke against Samford and has a good showing in the swamp against A&M, I won’t mind starting him full time. Of course, I don’t know when Mertz comes back
I said on the pod this week that we have enough film on Mertz and he has had enough chances and I would start Lagway vs. Samford and if he looks good you give him a go aganist A&M.
Let's be clear here, Florida doesn't miss check downs. MERTZ misses check downs because he doesn't know how to use them. He's too busy hyper focused on the receiver he already wants to go to pre-snap.
What I would give to have a “Napier reacts” video to this breakdown
😮
When you're constintly waiting until there is only 10 seconds on the play clock to put a man in motion to see what the coverage is, you leave no time to call an audible, and you're relying on the play you called to work. A play that the defense knows you're going to run, because you run the same plays every time. Also, he clearly doesn't trust the O-line, which is why on pass plays he does 2 fakes to throw off the defense and only sends one man down field. How about instead of sending one man down field actually use your wideouts and tightend and send all 4 down field and make the DB's cover the whole field, instead of one player. OR, how about you start recuiting O-lineman instead of getting 6 great wideouts and never being able use them because your O-line sucks.
Hopefully Kiffin or Riley will get this cleaned up!!!
Do you stream live commentary during games?
I do not. :/
Remember when Gator fans kept saying Mertz was better than Ward? The entire Gator fan base clearly doesn't know ball😂
Nobody said that. Lots of people questioned whether Ward would continue to perform at a high level against better competition, though
ward’s pac12 record and inability to beat teams like stanford or win on the road were red flags. ward is in a much better situation with a much better oline and playcalling. he’s always had higher upside than mertz. mertz last year was more consistent but not as flashy. ward did not play like this was his first game on a new team and the swamp didnt rattle him. kudos to him.
@@kattalassothis is not true. From your beat writers, to your podcasters and on message boards, the consensus was that the measured approach (check down) of Mertz was better than the gunslinger approach of Ward. There was also many saying the DL(laughable), LB, WRs (laughable) and secondary were better also. You gators were really sniffing your own farts
Billy regurgitates execution over and over because the offense is so vanilla there is no margin for error, and even if it's perfectly executed it's a failure more times than not.
1) It seems that when they are in man, and we have 3 WR on one side and 1 on the other, the ball should be going to the side of the lone receiver. A D1 receiver should be able to beat a defender 1 on 1.
2) You blamed Mertz for throwing the post to far inside, and I agree, but isn't it on both the receiver and QB? The ball and the receiver needs to be at a common spot, like the opposite goal post.
The qb's job is to throw the ball to the right space. If Mertz had done that, and the wr takes too steep of angle so that he can't get there, it's on the wr. There is no world where given the circumstances of that play that the ball should have been thrown where it was.
Sorry this is all coaching. Players are not getting better and are just soft. Some constructive builds- try to get through the plays quicker. Say less and hit the key points in each play only. I have to watch at high speed.
Everything went wrong with the gators defense, they didnt even show up to the game
There's no way after watching film they keep #70 on the line. He's trash
mertz let the offense down early alot
James can they hire you because the staff at florida sucks . We are not winning a game under these fools samford will beat us .
😮
He has a one track mind and one play sheet. It changes for NO ONE! No matter the week, month or year! It's just like his personality, BASIC AND BORING
By far Mertz worst game as a gator! I like him but I still think if Lagway has the game we’re all expecting him to have against Samford then he should get the start against A&M to prove if he just has that generational type of talent and can be a great QB as a true freshman
Why isn’t this man on the coaching staff
☺️
Can u please be our OC! 🙏🥺
☺️
normally i look forward to your videos but this time it is becoming difficult to do so, entirely because how the game went down.
🗑
Fans hardly showed up sold out the stadium to shut up after one touch down. That's equally bad to the teams performance
It was mostly Canes fans about mid 3rd quarter. The fans quit like the team did
@@drewn5271 the fans were gone in the first quarter. They were there but they werent there.
How does Napier convince QB’s to come to UF with these garbage routes?
‼️‼️
So pretty much the moral of the story is graham mertz is a bad qb
napier runs pee wee plays man this is sad🤦🏾♂️
Thanks. It must be painful to watch this garbage. Why wouldn't you play 8 in the box vs Billy? You'd be stupid not to do it vs Simple Bill.
Only one man in a route? You can't run a double play action fake if your receivers are running routes.
Defense can't clap for any reason..... huge missed call.
Facts
This is so sad 😂
