Fox instinct: a few weeks ago I dabbed my foot into a sandwall and yanked my foot 90° to the outside, the boot protected very well and stabilized perfectly so that I did get only a little ankle injury. Definitely gonna stay with these

For me the Alpinestar Tech 7 is unbeatable. The Tech 10's didn't fit me well & I didn't like they way they felt. I tried the more expensive boots from Sidi & they weren't as comfortable. Nothing about them made me think they were worth the extra money. Like the gentleman said in the video the Tech 7's are extremely comfortable. By far the best feeling boot I've ever worn. They're super tough too , I've never had a pair fall apart on me & I've never broken a buckle. The only boot I've had issue's with & have something bad to say about are the FOX boots. Every pair of Fox boots I've owned & the Fox boots the people that I ride with have had ALL suffered reliability problems. They fell apart extremely fast & the buckles have broken on several pair's that I've seen. Great review I enjoy your content !

Tech 7 may be lighter and confortable, but are way far on protection than Tech 10 and other top boots (that some are not even here).
On a Tech 7 there isn`t so much protection when twisting an ankle, and on the back (over the heel) there is no protection at all.
However I have lots of friends that love them, but one of them broke a foot just hitting a tree.
BTW, great reviews/comparisons here, awesome job Rocky Mountain ATV MC.

I have an old pair of tech 8s and i know they are not on this list but by far the best boot i have ever had. I got them used and they were already pretty worn but still in good shape. The boots are over 7+ years old and still gets the job done perfectly. Best boot ever!

SG12: Best padding, best protection, best comfort. Toe area protection second to none. Super stable ankle and very tough ankle protection (BOTH flex and impact). Very supportive on the bike.

Was wearing Alpinestars for 10 years or more. You are right , the tech 7 is so comfortable l never wanted to change. The tech 10 is very good, stiff but the inner bootie was not my cup of tea. Tech 7's do have some heal float and the soles wear out too fast. Almost every season you need a resolve even though the uppers are in good condition. I got the Gaerne SG 12 and will never buy any other boot again ! Never thought l would like a stiff conventional sole boot, but l was wrong. The protection , quality and durability is unsurpassed. No heal float and just as comfortable as a Tech 7. They run a little big, so if you are between sizes, go down a size . You will not regret buying these boots ! No sole wear after 30 hours on the bike !

My input from having used 3 of these:
Sg12: great padding and feels super comfortable, great buckles and overall build quality. Only downside is that these are a bit bigger overall and will feel hefty at first while riding
Fox Instinct: Pretty good boot overall and feels almost invisible while riding . Buckles and soles are bit worse
Sidi: Very narrow and low on top of your foot, felt the worst for me because my feet did not match the design. However it does have very good build quality overall

One thing to consider with the Sidi Crossfire 3's.... The ENTIRE sole isn't replacement, such as the toe and heel. That is why I went with the Crossfire 2's. The also have an Enduro sole available which is like a true hiking boot sole.

    • @maverick2242
      @maverick2242 5 ปีที่แล้ว

3 has an Enduro sole option and they have a wide foot option, that said and I am a long long time Sidi boot user, they are no longer made in Italy and they’re have been quality issues reported with the later made SRS3s the fact they are no longer made in Italy means I’ll be going back to Gaerne the last boot MADE in Italy by artisans not cheap labour with cheap materials. I don’t don’t that industry where possible.

You nailed the SG12! I had an old pair wen I was a kid and loved them. When I came back to riding I got the new ones. LOVE my boots. The ankle fit is wonderfully comfortable and supportive, the buckles NEVER fail to close and never open while riding. They are rigid and protective to the max. You feel like you could take a bullet in them. I am not someone I would think has a wide foot. I am tall and skinny with long bones. These fit me really well. I wear one pair of beefy MX socks (and lately, compression socks under the MX socks) and my feet and ankles feel nice and cozy in there. I never noticed the wide leg opening, but I wear some plastic-over-foam knee/shin guards and the boots fit right over them. So I have hard protection from my toes to my quadriceps. They do take a little time to break in, but they never feel soft or loose to me once you ride in them a few times. I remember picking up a Fox something at my bike shop and was surprised how pillowy and sneaker-like they felt. Maybe they work really well, I don't know. I've always like the bullet-proof nature of the SG's. And Chase is right, they feel a little ambiguous on the pegs but you get used to it quickly. Great review.

@@rmatvmc Coming back a year later to update my review. Last November I got some whiskey throttle and fell off the back of my bike on a motocross track. A pretty normal whiskey throttle get-off in my opinion but somehow I broke my 3rd and 4th metatarsal, and broke my 5th metatarsal in 2 places. I have no idea how this is even possible in that boot. And I landed on my ribs as I let go of the bike late. My ribs hurt so bad I didn't know my foot was broken for 10 minutes, so I have no idea how my foot struck the ground or whatever caused the breaks. I'm looking for ideas as to how anyone could have these breaks from that type of crash. Trying to figure out if a different type of boot might help me before I go back to the track. Thanks!!

I agree with everything about what he said about the insticts but from my experince i didnt have a problem with any stiffnes and breaking in the tech 10s took about 10 minutes of riding then i got used to them

This video is kinda old now but I figured I’d comment on it anyways. I have a pair of alpinestars tech 10s, they run a bit small because of the inner bootie but it’s not a problem for me. They are very stiff for awhile, probably 5-10 hours before they loosen up a little. The soles are very grippy. I love the 3 buckle system they have as well. Also these are great boots for big guys, I have knee braces and large calf’s and I can secure the top buckle easily. The only issue I have had with them is one time I went to tighten one of my buckles and I did it too tight and it ripped the screw out for the base of the buckle and stripped the hole. So just keep in mind don’t wrench on the buckles too hard.

I bought tech 7s size 11 (normally 10.5 in most shoes), were too big and really stiff, my foot slopped around in them as well. My missus splashed the extra dough for a pair of instincts, size 11. They fit perfectly, super good feel and apart from one broken buckle due to throwing them into the ute while latch was open, after 4 years are still going strong. The only downside is exactly what he said, I wear knee/shin guards and its hard to over lap and buckle the top and also slightly in the mid boot. I will buy these again.

The SG12's didn't work for me. Such a bummer because they are so well made. The memory foam was too tight around my ankles.. bruised my skin after a long ride. The large tor box is comfy, but externally, the toe cap sits high and can cause difficulty shifting. If they work for you, you are in luck! Super nice! And construction wise, probably the best made boot. Nicer than the Sidi crossfire 2 TA I switched to.

They took about 1 hour on the bike then heaven ! The feel on the footpegs and controls seems vague at first, but even that you get used to quickly . The stiff sole is a game changer for aggressive whoops and riding. Much more stable and protected confidence. A stiff conventional sole is key when aggressive riding is what you are doing.

The Gaerne feels like you’re wearing a boot. Like a heavy boot that offers the best protection. Hands down the best boot, thickest sole and large calves fit the best.
The Astars tech 7, don’t waste your money. Way too light, bulky boot you can’t feel the shifter.
Sidi’s are narrow AF. I do love Sidi’s as a second pair, but they are way too light like the tech 10’s.
Get the Gaerne, the best boot around.

I have the SG12's currently and I love the durability and they look new for a long time as long as you clean them up after each ride. Just looking for a slimmer/smaller toe box. In between the Tech 7 or Sidi Crossfire. Not sure if the Tech 7 has "premium" protection.

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi, Jesse. I think the SG12 has a pretty slim toe box but I can see how the stiffness of the boot makes it feel a little bigger. The Tech 7 is super comfy and has a nice low toe box and good peg feel but you won't get the durability of the Sg12, it's a give and take. I don't feel like the the Tech 7 is as supportive as an SG12 or a Sidi, but it's not bad. Honestly, it's hard to find anyone with anything negative to say about the Tech 7 other than some durability stuff. When it comes to Sidi, I like the new Atajo more. I've been spending some time in those and the toe box is a little wider than the Crossfire 3, it's a lot lighter, and just simplified. Between those two, I'd choose the Atajo. One gripe I have with the Tech 7 is the heel float which the Atajo is much better with. Only thing to know about the Atajo is that it's on the narrow side. Hope this helps. - Chase

Im not an extreme mx rider but do get a little loose and just need medium protection.. the tek seems like it's built for a war in space and makes me feel very disconnected from my shit and brake.. Just trying to figure out if the instincts would help with the loss in connection to my bike.. or do I need to suck it up get use to the 10's? Im not looking for a boot that will make it thru a zombie apocalypse. I just want something comfortable and safe.

      @rmatvmc  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi, paidpro9cool. Well I definitely don't want you to feel disconnected from your "shit" haha. That would be weird. Or maybe that's a good thing, you wouldn't want that hanging around... But if you want the best connected to the bike feel, then the instinct would be my first pick for you. They can be hit or miss on fit depending on the rider but you can use our fit guarantee. What I would do, if you can, is call in and order an Instinct AND a Tech 7 (another great boot for feel) and you can let them know that you plan to return one of the pairs after trying them both on. They can email you can email you a shipping label so that you can just send back the pair you don't like. This way, let's say you got an instinct and didn't like the fit, you don't have to wait for us to get them back and ship our a different boot. That's my advice. But you have to call in to do that, you can't do that buying online. - Chase

Just keep riding. If you're having trouble shifting up, adjust your shifter at the spline to raise it. You're never going to actually "feel" the shifter or the brake like a tennis shoe. No amount of gear is going to replace seat time and skill brought on by practice. You have great boots, no need to spend money.

I'm using Tech 7 Enduro for hard enduro riding, and they are awesome. But have one bad issue - durability.
comfort, protection, feeling - is awesome
durability - is awful. My boots after 8 month (about 80-100 moto hours) looks like 5-years old boots. damages: the inner linings come off, sole loosed noticeable peaces of rubber, one hinge is broken, one buckle come off.
So, right now I'm thinking about new boots. I'm choosing between Tech 10 and Tech 7 (again)). And most probably I'll by Tech 7 again, despite the fact of theirs bad durability.

Which boot handles water the best? Or are they all similar? My Tech 7's have been great for the last few years, but if I hit a puddle with any speed, water blasts right in. I have tried using waterproof coatings on the leather parts and seams. It helps a little bit, but any notable improvement dissipates after a just a few rides. I don't want to compromise on comfort or protection, but it would be cool if there was a boot that could handle water better.

Chase re the Sidi’s you can order a wide foot version in the SRS.
As always great product review just some points as another hot topic with me at the moment, loyalty is one of the few qualities I respect these days it’s not grey it’s not objective or subjective like trust. it’s do or do not, no try!
I’m have had Sidis for nearly 20years, Moto, MtB and even in my lycra days on a road bike, wth was I thinking back then, lycra wtf..
Anyways recently I have seen a bit of feedback re the later made SRS 3 not wearing well eg, poor durability it’s not first hand to be fair but it’s is reliable sources.
That said after some research and on Sidi’s own website and other searches around, find out they are no longer “made in Italy” this is a big issue for me for many reasons! plus they have kept that very sneaky imo.
Durability for one! cheap labour another and fit and comfort. etc etc.
People talk and you have here about initial fit and comfort, in my years of wearing any boot, Moto, work sport running any footwear that feels good out of the box, doesn’t have durability, support for me anyways has been lacking to the point I have sent stuff back or taken back, due to break down and actual leg back even neck pain yes fitted correctly, I have learnt the hard way quality and price do not always match either, like it used to. I have not tried Fox’s but they don’t even go on my radar.
Next new pair probably buy 2 sets now, I will go back to SG12s (last bought a pair in 2012) getting my SRS2s refreshed as well, probably won’t need another pair even if Gaerne pull that shit too! eg designed in Italy made in China or Timbuktu!
I like a boot that needs a break in period, they always last they always have that feel of quality and importantly maintain support.
You’ll never get me in a tech10 again the early gens were great, but I have seen to many broken foots in recent years the bootie is imo the problem, too stiff not enough flex unsure, it’s not a new issue, but that is my perception. Plus I am not a pro SX or MX racer. But I need to trust my boots.
How can you break your foot twice in one year that’s hell of a bad luck or an issue! Herlings is not alone in that either, regardless Id go Tech7 but it’s made in China mkre is the pity and that’s just as bad for a premium price on a premium brand, no .. way in hell ever. I implore Gaerne stay local stay loyal to your country and workers and I will always support that, maybe old school, I also love 2 strokes.
Gaerne looks like the last of the Mohican brands.

I got the SG12's and newest model of the Tech 10's
My SG12's are size 9, my T10's are size 11.
The SG12's are suuuuuuper tight around the ankle, and EXTREMELY stiff.
They are a bit more narrow in the toebox than the T10.
The new T10's are VERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRY stiff as well.
My SG12's the second highest strap, was always on a upward angle to the buckle, and the buckle just recently split.
The newer T10 booty is definitely more of a pain in the ass than previous models.
At 14:03, that "flexion insert" already split/cracked, after only like 7-8 uses.
Both have ZERO flex for quite some time.
I'd say don't throw out/sell your old boots yet if you're racing, cause you won't be able to race in these for a while.
I couldn't get on and off the rear brake, and was hard to shift.

I've got a pair of Tech 7 Enduros that I've had for a season. They were insanely stiff right out of the box and never broke in. I've got a lot of hours on them and even walked 5 miles in them once. They have zero ankle articulation. It's just like wearing a ski boot. The molded sole and upper give zero feel. And the exterior dimension of the upper, especially in the toe are is huge and clunky. It's like the old Moon boots from the 80's. Trying to get that massive boot under the shifter without being able to point your foot down is nearly impossible. I miss so many shifts and hit so many false neutrals. And forget about any kind of precision rear brake use. You can't feel the pedal at all and you end up stepping down on it with your entire leg because you can't flex your ankle down. I really tried to love them for an entire season but I'm over it. I just ordered some Sidi Crossfire 3 TAs. I met another guy who had the same opinions I did about the Tech 7s. He went to the Sidi Crossfire 3 TAs and said they have way more flex and feel as well as a much smaller exterior upper which you can actually get under the shifter. I hope he's right.
