- No doubt that in terms of football quality, moments, and entertainment, the 2022 world cup delivered more than anyone could have anticipated.
But while it was - in terms of football - the best world cup I have ever witnessed - I’ll have to admit - it just didn’t have the same feeling.
The atmosphere, the global culture, and the immersion just didn’t hit the same like it did with other world cups. And maybe it’s just me, but while the 2022 world cup was incredibly entertaining, watching almost every match and even following the events outside the pitch from different news outlets, creators, and influencers, it just really felt like an high stakes international footballing tournament more than it truly felt like a world cup.
I mean do you remember brazil 2014? Say what you will about the quality of football during that tournament, but you can’t deny - it truly did feel like a world cup, and I was fully immersed as if I was actually experiencing the scenes of rio de jeneiro with my very eyes. But in my opinion, when it comes to the most memorable and enjoyable true world cup experience, nothing in the past 2 decades hits like the 2010 world cup in south Africa. And if you don’t agree with me on just how incredibly iconic the tournament was - I promise you - just give me 10 minutes, and I’m convinced that I’ll change your mind.

2010 was the first world cup I've watched. I was about 8. It was fantastic, magical but one thing that 2022 world cup surpassed 2010 is the crucial excitement and unexpected results.

I was too young and didn't like football around the time of the 2010 world cup, but the hype and presentation was in hindsight utterly iconic, the Shakira song, the vuvuzela, the logo, which I think it's absolutely the best world cup logo of all time, no other since then was as good as in 2010, and before then, only the 2006 world cup in germany can come close.
Yes, it was probably the tournament that really gave off a true global vibe, but 2022 still was the most exciting

TBH it was a boring tournament compared to 2022 Spain mostly played defensive football but it worked in their favour. Also they scored the least amount of goals to win the tournament and the final wasn’t that exciting either only one goal deciding after extra time. 2022 was a roller coster ride of highs and lows the best in living memory.

The 2014 World Cup is imo the best‼️ It had an incredible atmosphere and amazing games. Van Persies flying header and Spain falling victim to the winner's curse. The only downside is that Neymar got injured, and we did not get to see Argentina vs Brazil in the final 💯

the thing about world cup 2010 was that it was the first wc to ever came after the post youtube internet media shit post era and that's why it felt so overwhelmingly promoted, fresh, connected, and will always hold a special place in all of our childhood's hearts.

2010 was magical for us Spaniards, apart from the nostalgia that year alone gives me, I still remember the moment we won the finale, it was a crazy, I remember I was with my family watching the match in a big screen they put on the center of the town, I remember my father had to carry me to see the screen because the center was crowded, when Iniesta score the goal against Netherlands everyone started screaming because, the happiness, the screams of joy of the people, it was all too good, even I didn't understand what exactly happened at the moment because I was too little I was happy, not only in football but Spain was also dominating in many sports that year too, it was magical

2022 couldn't match the atmosphere of 2010. Good football in 2022 and 2010. But 2022 had more of that corporate inorganic feel while 2010 felt more organic it was perfect. I also think Brazil was better that 2022

I was a child when the 2010 FIFA World Cup was being played and now when I look back, it was definitely the best world cup out of 2014, 2018 and 2022. I love the music and the commercials. Keep it up Raymar!! 😍😍

2010 was definitely the favorite world cup for me, i was like 11. 2006 was the first WC i saw but i only remember like quarter finals onwards but it is definitely the one that made me fall in love with the game. 2010 was just i feel like "my world cup" kinda because my favorite team Spain won among other epic things about that world cup. 2014 was also a great one but i was too heartbroken with Spain losing to the dutchmen and chile and realizing that everyone in the team is old now. 2018 didn't really feel like a world cup to me idk it seemed underwhelming.
Netherlands vs spain was definitely my favorite match of football complete revenge preventing the champions from even making it out of the group

The 2010 World Cup was the best World Cup but the most emotional for me was 2022 because Messi finally won the trophy he wanted most and suffered all the way there playing some of the best teams in the tournament. Don’t even get me started on the final! Mbappe scoring 2 goals in 90 seconds to take them to extra time when they’d been trailing by that many for 80 minutes was incredible! The 2010 World Cup made me fall in love with Spanish football and the 2022 World Cup was won by the man that deserved it most both excellent!

For me 2006 was the most iconic WC ever, it was my second world cup watching with my brothers and we were all rooting for Italy, and with that unforgettable finally, i was experiencing football not just by my eyes but with my soul.
Arhba was my favorite song for this world cup and I feel like if they made some adjustments then it would’ve been memorable and close to those older World Cup songs

I think a large part of this World Cup not having the same feeling was the fact it took place during most people’s winter. Because of work or school or holidays it felt like a secondary thing, where as in the summer with the 2014 World Cup and many pst world cups, that was the main focus. The World Cup literally was summer.
For me it made the World Cup more special. I love Winter and Messi winning right before Christmas (here in the US) was just perfect!

You've 100% convinced me. I think it was just recency bias that was getting to me for the 2022 world cup. But looking back, seeing Iker Casillas (my fav player growing up) saving that last chance against Netherlands has been engrained in my memory ever since. The vibes were just right, and the whole world cup experience had to be the best of them all.

Im 40 years old i still remember italia 90 however it was one of the lowest scoring WC ever and the final game was awful. Qatar 22 was the best WC’s i have seen in my lifetime maybe i will never see another one like it again the whole tournament was phenomenal and Messi winning it was the best thing ever.

For me, Brazil 2014 was my favorite tournament. Being held in an iconic footballing country like Brazil, the carnival atmosphere, the fan fest, the incredible stadiums’ atmosphere. Everything was there for me, especially being 11 at the time.
South Africa was also incredible but I don’t have the same memories because I was too young. From a pure stylistic and tone of the tournament (it’s presentation) South Africa tops all in my opinion. Between the font, colors, wildlife, commercials, atmosphere, soundtrack etc., nothing compares.

As a Spaniard this World Cup gave me more happiness than I can think of for obvious reasons.. I still tear up watching iniestas goal. But this World Cup was special for so many other reasons it just had this unique feeling to it I can’t describe it.

If I had to pick one though, it will always be Messi winning The World Cup in 2022 and I'm not just saying that because it happened a month ago and I'm still riding the dopamine high from it.
It needed to happen for what Leo has given to football. He earned and deserved that 1 last trophy. Seeing him happy makes me happy.
Sure the 2010 world cup had better anthems (Prime Shakira and Wavin' Flag wins by lightyears ahead), better commercials, better ball (the freaky Jabulani), an Octopus out of all things to predict games and if memory serves me, he nailed it all or had a pretty high percentage of prediction(Paul) and an overall better feel... But yeah, Messi lifting that trophy is sweeter than all. Yeah I know I'm biased.

I love 2010 but I love 2002 (Japan/Korea) as well because that was my first time watching the world cup. France's early exit, Usa's quarterfinal run, one of the last times we saw Brazil play Joga Bonito. It was amazing! It made me want to buy a ball and learn how to play. 2010 was amazing as well and it made me appreciate Iniesta as a player more than I already did.

2022 was superior by far, I was 11 at the time in 2010 and the matches bored the heck outta me. You are right on the spectacle, SA did a great job and Shakira's song added a sense of awe and extravaganza to it. SA wasn't even my first world cup I watched a lot of 2006 including the final and it was so much more compelling than 2010 from a viewing standpoint. It says something when Shakira's song is the most memorable thing that happened, yes it was that good but if you insert 2022/2006 calibre finals into 2010 people would remember that too

Watching the 2010 World Cup in Congo was a different experience than any other WC I got to watch in my life l. However, as a Belgian I gotta say 2014 was special for us. So imma put them 2 as a tie with the 2006 final being one of my core football memories

It was my first ever world cup to watch, the atmosphere was just amazing and everything was new, it was at home in Africa + my favorite team won the trophy. It's was just a miracle to experience that kind of love of the game from all over Africa and the world. That's something you only experience once in a decade. FIFA WORLD CUP 2010 was 🔥🔥

I think nostalgia will always win, so I think in the next 10-15 years we will remember Qatar22 like we did South Africa. We should also remember that at the time in 2010 that world cup was also filled with off field controversy with the country's selection and apartheid issues leading up to the tournament. I think all the things about 2022 world cup from the songs to the legendary moments will be remembered fondly when we're much older

The iconic victory for Messi, Moroccos triumph, tears of Ronaldo (not making fun of him), the rise of Mbappe (the future of football), Japan's discipline and power of counterattack, The upsets, the drama, all of these things can never be forgotten.

The 2010 World Cup made me a football fan for life. I’ll never forget it, and I’ll always look back fondly on that time. FIFA 2010 also had that song Hacen Falta Dos by Macaco, which to this day stays on my gym playlist and I get emotional af when I hear it.

France 1998 is hands down the best WC. First of all the players. A prime Brazil, France, England and Italy, with players like R9, Roberto Carlos, Zidane, Beckham, Baggio, the list goes on and on. Also the iconic Romanian team where the players collectively decided to dying their hair peroxide blonde. Also it was the last time Yugoslavia competed in a World Cup, and Croatia, Jamaica, Japan and South Africa made their first appearances with Croatia ending up taking the bronze. Also also you had Norway doing kind of what what Iceland did in 2016. They beat Brazil and made it to the quarterfinal(?).
Lastly you have the impecable World Cup song's 'The Cup of Life' by Ricky Martin and and 'Carnival de Paris', as well as the amazing tie-in game with Blur's Song 2
He did say 2010 was the best in the last two decades.. Looking at most of the comments I’d say most people on here weren’t born in 1998.. I myself was 5 and apart from remembering being disappointed along with my dad when Brazil lost the final I didn’t really experience it much myself.

I'm from South Africa, so I know it's bias to say, but damn 2010 World Cup was beautiful, I had the sticker book that had all the country's full squad, I knew all the players back then😂, I literally watched all the matches, I was obsessed and I used to play soccer then too... That final between Spain vs Netherlands was intense , the likes of Van Persie, David Villa , Casillas.. bruh the players were iconic

I was only 7 years old but I remember following Spain and Paraguay. I remember my mom wanting to watch all Mexico games and I remember crying when USA was out. That USA Ghana game is the first game I remember watching.

I was young at that time, but I still have some very fond memories of that World Cup. 2014 Brazil probably comes close but that 2010 World Cup was🥵🥵
For me 2014 is still my favourite. 2010 was also good, but unfortunately we lost the final painfully.
I also enjoyed 2006 and 2018. 2022 was good, but not my favourite.

I remember working all summer of 2010 and wasn’t able to watch the entire tournament, but definitely watched the final between Spain and Netherlands.
In a foster home at the time, I was living with a Dutch/Scottish family and went to the in-laws that very Sunday afternoon and everyone was rocking orange jerseys. And me being the only Latino kid there, I was obviously rooting for Spain. 🤫
I remember how Intense this game was to watch. So many close calls. And super aggressive too.
Then finally, Iniesta, the savior boot it in and I didn’t know how to react because of my surroundings, but I was super happy.
Also the vuvuzela instrument emitting by the fans sounded like a giant swarm of bees 🐝 which was pretty awesome

Really dont get the fascination with the 2010 world cup, it was terrible. Low scoring games, most big teams didnt turn up, most players had average tournaments unless your were Spanish, Uruguayan or Dutch.
It was a terrible cup. Maybe they were fascinated by Shakira's song or they watched it during their childhood 😂😂
