I don't know what it is about voice actors, but pretty much the entire casts of BG3 and FFXVI seem to be amongst the nicest, most wholesome, most interesting, most charismatic people on the planet. It's uncanny.
Well I think they have the same charisma that live action actors possess (kind of a requirement for this job) but at the same time none of the arrogance and egotism since they are fine with being invisible to the public eye most of the time. They just seem in love with their craft. So as far as actors go, they are probably the best of both worlds in terms of personality.
Considering how popular he is in fandom I doubt that it's the majority of people lol. He was pretty much the only character I heard anything about before playing the game.
In a game full of incredible talent and writing, this man gives what I would describe as an Oscar-worthy performance. The nuance to the way his voice changes and posture shifts at all the right moments (since mo-cap was used)...just such genuinely incredible work by him. I went into the game thinking Astarion would be just a suave, seductive, edgy red flag of a man...but he's actually deeply traumatized and layered and his behavior in every route suits the story that's being told. An absolutely stand-out performance by Neil, and I hope he knows we're not just simping because 'hot slutty vampire man'. The depth he brings to the character with his tonal shifts and demeanor changes are really what's worth all that attention and praise.
For me the most interesting thing was how he managed to convey the very visceral differences between the two ending options for Astarion. Like, he's still saying the same kind of thing he's been saying all along, but one version gives me the absolute creeping horrors.
@@lamafaceI was 100% against save scumming companion stuff but I got so much ick from the one Astarion route. Felt like my bro died and got replaced by his evil twin or something, had to reload immediately
Yes, like Astarion is VERY beautiful, but what drew me to him over the story was the performance and how much depth is in his character. You can feed in to his coping mechanisms from his trauma, but you can also show him care and compassion and it really opens him up into such a clearly broken, traumatized and eventually caring man. It is truly so beautiful to just experience the story with Astarion, and being able to get him closer to healing his wounds with love, understanding and genuine care. You can also make him evil, but that ending makes me sad.
Neil streams on twitch and i was watching him talk about it yesterday with the voice actor for Lae'zel... They voiced these characters for 4 years!! There's no surprise the actors are attached to the characters after playing them for so long
I played through Astarion's full storyline. I identified a lot with the trauma in different ways, I was crying while finishing his quest line. I thank Neil, the Larian team, as well as everyone involved in this game for doing such an incredible job. This has become my favorite game insanely fast.
I wish nothing but more success and more gigs for this man. He absolutely killed it with asterion. By far the best performance of any of the companions, not even close either and the fact that the others VA were amazing as well is saying so much about this man here.
Neil is one of the kindest souls i've seen in the gaming industry in a long time. He deserves all the hype and success, just like the rest of the team.
he deserves so much success. i hope the studios are fighting over him. may his schedule be all booked up for as long as he continues to work as an actor because his performance was so moving and any project would be lucky to have him and we would all be lucky to see it. Just wow at THAT scene. I dont think i need to say more. we all know what scene. blown away.
Aww this is so wholesome ❤ Neil is a fantastic actor and a lovely person and he deserves so much love for his role as Astarion. Truly, Astarion's story blew me away and it was due in no small part to Neil's performance.
To see a man with such a big heart, passion and love for his work getting recognition feel so good. never feel ashamed for getting emotional, like you said it was a journey. you, larian, and the rest of the crew deserve all the love coming your way. you guys are proof that working your butts off and putting yourselves out there can still pay off, it feels so so so great to see. hopefully you guys worked secretly on expansions and we ll enjoy more content with all of you. a well crafted story, with wonderful peoples. hope to see more of those in the futur💕
The depths this man has brought to an already well written character blows my mind every time. Like you hear character's experience color the way he says things, bringing a beautiful balance where the actor has to play a sort of an actor. Scenes where players break up with Astarion?? I could NEVER, the way his voice quivers and breaks is heartwrenching, fear of losing, self-loathing and bravado all mixed together- brilliant. And the performance! All the sways and eye movement makes him SO ALIVE. I'm an artist but quite burnt out yet I can't stop drawing Astarion, the range of his expressions and how fun it looks transfers perfectly into a great drawing experience. I also wish I could kiss character, 3D, texture and light artists because I have over a thousand screenshots and like to look at them for fun, not even for drawing. All the little wrinkles and freckles and moles are so hearwarming Man, I love this game so much, I'm also gonna start crying 😭😭😭
As someone who knew Neil even before buldur‘s gate it makes me so happy to see him get so much recognition. I remember watching the interviews and the behind the scenes videos with the cast of Detroit become human where everyone just talked with so much admiration and respect about him and he always seemed like one of the nicest, most down to earth actors I have ever seen, which hasn’t changed one bit. His performance as Astarion is astounding and a pure joy to watch ❤
Almost finished the game and it was the first time that I really fall in love with a character😭😭 thank you for your voice and your soul you gave to Astarion ❤️❤️
For the record, he seems to have an over 9 hours long playlist dedicated to Astarion on Spotify, which melts my heart even more seeing this. Such a great game made by great people ♥️
Oh man, I read that title as ‘Neil breaks down how he cried in the booth’ 😅. I was not prepared for this beautiful, emotional gut-punch. But amazing to see.
This game certainly has one of the best and most memorable voice acting performances. Astarion is my favorite character and while his design and story are amazing, it's honestly Neil's phenomenal voice acting that got me hooked on the character. So much so that I'm now a fan of Neil's and will definitely be keeping an eye out for his other works.☺❤
Neil's performance was incredible. I was meant to be doing a "good" playthrough but Astarion was with me all the way. I found myself being more chaotic than expected, hoping for his approval...
When I was playing BG3, one of the first things that came to my mind about it was "wow, there's just a lot of love put into this game." You can feel the care when you play the game, all the detail. I really, really, really love the game. It does set the standard.
Neil is such a genuine man. I get nothing but positive and amazing energy from him. He should one day open up his own teaching school for those interested in the career field.
If a character makes you hate it, it's still a good character, if not the greatest You can tell a character is great when it makes you feel things, positive and negative This is why I like astarion and lae'zel despite me finding them annoying, the writing and acting is so on point you get to feel animosity towards them if you don't like them, as if they were real lol
Its so good that Neil feels so deeply about this character. I feel that this role was able to give him a measure of catharsis that he really needed, something that few people ever get when we need it. Good for him. 👏🏻⭐💖
Astarion is a delightful role for the Nile. Brilliant work: sharp emotional swings and experiences, fears of the character, his resentment and anger. Everything is excellently conveyed. I also really liked Elijah Kamsky in Detroit: become human. Too bad it's impossible to tell Neil about my admiration in person. ))
Astarion is not the kind of companion I like to have in my team for one reason : it's because I play this kind of character as main character (a bard). So having 2 Astarion would ve too much in a group. But listening to the actor and the love he felt by acting Astarion... I'll let a chance to his character for my next playthrough.
He is one hell of a VA because I don't think I would've guessed he'd voiced Astarion if I wasn't told. He's really made him a unique character and one of the most 'real' characters I've come across in fiction.
I really love Astarion as a character. But I will never forget my first exposure to Neil's work, when he voiced John Galahad in The Secret World. A shame we didn't get more with him.
Neil dont know if you will read this or not but you have a new fan here. wish you the best my brother. also my favorite line from astarion was when I clicked on him he said " careful I bite." :D
It's so awesome that voice actors are getting love and attention for their work, especially for such exception performance. It's usually underappreciated.
This project...the game...the work on it and the team can be compared in the gaming world and the media world if we ignore the comparison of hard work and experience etc. with Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy ( I mean the movie one). Perfect choice of characters and actors who gave them soul and thousands of lines of emotional fantasy story. Without knowing it, the Larians have made history. And I sincerely hope that, as was the case with the Oscar-winning trilogy, it will be the case in the gaming world with Baldurs Gate 3.
The clips from BG3 mostly show early game, and that's understandable, since the game is fresh and spoiling the fun for everybody isn't nice. However... The way this man goes absolutely crazy in later stages of the game portraying Astarion. By the end of the game it is absolutely THE BEST acted character. The range mister Newbon shows reaches peaks of joy to then be immediately plunged into the nethermost pits of despair. Ok, I'm off to continue my second playthrough of BG3. This time it's solo tactician Dark Urge oathbreaker paladin. I'll burn the world.
I am a new subscriber due to these interviews. Thank you for doing them, it has been great to get to know the VAs, and I'll be interested to see what you upload going forward!
