I think it’s kinda funny how every “peak” of a franchise is the first few game because that’s when the original idea was used before it needed to spiral off to be more different

While I do like most of Sonic's games, even some after the mid 2000s and some during the mid and late 2010s, I will agree that being a Sonic fan is a rollercoaster of emotions, you got the early 90s, which was perfect, the mid 90s, which was kind of a mixed bag, not because the games were or really good or really bad but because there was not many remarkable games, almost all of them are forgetabble or just kinda bad (although I also like many of that era too), and they we got the late 90s and the early 2000s, which I can agree it was one of, or even THE peak of the series, and then we got the mid and late 2000s with many bad recieved and reviewed games, and then the early 2010s with a small break with 2 very well recieved games, just to go right back to bad recieved games in the mid and late 2010s, until we're now at the second peak of the series which I would argue is being one of the best times for being a Sonic fan, for the amazing games and spin-offs we're getting
Actually, while writting this I'm noticing a pattern, it seems that every 10 years Sonic has good games at the start of the decade just to have meh games in the middle and at the end, and I HOPE this new era in the 2020s will break this pattern and just sky rocket the series into the sky with wonderful games, up to this moment thankfully it's looking like it

Sonic's definitive era was on the Genesis/16-bit. Not to say Dreamcast era Sonic wasn't good, but I just don't find myself going back to play those games as much as I play the original 2D games. We even got Sonic Mania later on, which was a throwback to the 16-bit era, also being one of the most successful recent Sonic games. Pretty much proving that Sonic is best in 2D.

I'm totally agree with your definitive eras from Crash Mario and Sonic !
I don't think this current era can top adventure era (maybe if they remake SA1/SA2 and make a new adventure game), but I think it's still the best era for Sonic after adventure era.
And for Mario games, with retrocompatibility, we have also Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door, who is probably the peak of the Paper Mario franchise, Gamecube and Wii were absolutely amazing for Mario !

To me Mario’s definitive era has to be the NES right around Super Mario Bros. 3. The games up to that point are all classic but even looking past the games, Mario’s name alone just printed money. He even had his own cereal and multiple Saturday morning cartoons

Nice video. I think the definitive era of Sonic (so far) was definitely the 2000s as a whole. Maybe like 1999 to 2011. Because every year, we got at least one good Sonic game, and yes I am including 2006. Cause even if we had Sonic 06 and Sonic Genesis on GBA, we also had games like Riders and Rivals in 2006. And many eventually started having more positive things to say about Unleashed and Black Knight. 2011 was the last great Sonic year until 2022 with many great Sonic things coming out. To me, 2013-2019 was the truly dark era for Sonic overall. We still got some good stuff here and there, but it was a rough time being a Sonic fan in that era. Also the Mega Man X series is my favorite Mega Man series. And I'd have to think about what I'd consider Mario's definitive era. I might also think it's the Wii era lol

I really feel Mega Man’s hayday on the NES is overhyped, And people misunderstood the series’ true artistic intent and identity for years despite the PS1 era being the most accurate to that intention. Mega Man 9 and 10 regressing all the advancements made from 4 through 8 especially ended up making me question if I was even truly a fan of the series to start with as it went back to some of the worst game design philosophies of 1 and 2.

I disagree. 1999-2004 showed a massive drop in Sonic's popularity and reception among the mainstream. Casual/mainstream reception of Sonic should be considered.
The fact that Sega keeps rereleasing the classic games so people under 10 now know of it, instead of just people on an internet community.
Hence, the "definitive era" is the most acknowledged. There are too many owners of Sonic 1 and 2 1991-1994, and the incomplete Sonic & Knuckles still sold 4 million. There was a popular comic and 2 Sonic cartoons airing at the same time

Sonic's definitive era was definitely the Mega Drive days. Sonic was a major contributing factor to making Sega a household name, and Mega Drive the most successful Sega console. The quality of the games were top notch, with those games considered some of the best platformers and went on to become classics.
The games of 1999 and onward were far less impactful, of lesser quality, much more controversial and it saw Sega exit the console market. Honestly, it doesn't even come close to the highs the series enjoyed during the Mega Drive era.

    • @marvelfannumber1
      @marvelfannumber1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Yeah, I don't really know in what world the 2000's would be considered the 'definitive era' of Sonic. The games during that time were divisive (Heroes was *hated* at the time, and SA2 was extremely controversial), it was the era when SEGA almost went out of business following their exit from the console market, it is an era that frankly doesn't have as much cultural relevance compared to the Megadrive era.
The Megadrive era from 1991-1994 by comparison was when Sonic was a character more recognizable to American children than Mickey Mouse. The era when Sonic was an IP so hot it could have *two* cocurrent animated shows running on TV at the same time. It was the era when seemingly endless arrays of platformers were trying to directly copy Sonic, from Bubsy to Awesome Possum. The era when all the mainline games released were groundbreaking and critically loved. Not to mention it's the first era most people think of when they think of Sonic, and the era of Sonic that gets endlessly referenced in pop culture as a result.
The Megadrive era was when Sonic wasn't just a brand, it was an institution. One of the all-time top video game franchises, even outperforming Mario on occasion. Sonic has had highs and lows since, but the franchise never been at the same level he was at in the early 90's.

For Sonic I would say now. The recent games are good. And you can play fan games, rom hacks, and mods which are all amazing. But the fanbase is really annoying. Dream Team, Frontiers, Superstars (idc this game is good), Robo Blast 2, Sonic TT 16 Bit, and P-06 are very good games.
If I wasn’t being biased is would be the Classic Era 1991-1998. Don’t wanna hear it Sonic R is based you’re just bad at it. Honestly the so called “downfall of Sonic” in the late 90s wasn’t a downfall. Saturn/Post Genesis Era was amazing. Sonic R, 3D Blast, and Sonic The Fighters were amazing games y’all hate them for trying something new. Bet most of people here didn’t even play any of these games and just falsely hated on them because someone told you to.

Dreamcast was nowhere popular enough to even include Dreamcast Sonic as the "definitive era." You are using a niche game console with minimal mainstream exposure. Those Sonic games were also less popular, sold less,,and were more, divisive than the original classics.
Logically, 1991-1994 is the definitive era and consists of games Sega will repeatedly rerelease, the Green Hill Zone from Sonic 1 is in practically every Sonic game. Literally, the classic games are the most emphasized and you dont need to be a member of a Sonic internet community to know of it.

The "dark age" for sonic is ironically the best era (shadow, 06, unleashed, secret rings, black knight) it had it all, just bad reception and bad ratings, people now are appreciating unleashed and 06 because they saw the games that came after and how terrible they are, and more people start to like shadow 05 and respect how Sega took a huge risk at surviving the "super edgy video game era" and how different it is, i love shadow 05 for one reason, cuz it completes the huge sonic heroes story mess, I didn't like how they brought shadow back after the sacrifice (well at least if you do it then do it right) sonic heroes is a big waste of time, I love sa1 but that game pretty much caries the whole "1998-2003" era, sa2 is overrated good game and heroes is overrated bad game, meanwhile 06 hate is dying out and people start to realize how great the game is (with mod manger, patches, etc.) and for the boost type gameplay, it seems it's getting worse as time goes on and with the backwards compatibility on xbox sx, people appreciate how great unleashed is and how the games after it are really worse, well after the 2000s, sonic games are devolving and getting worse, to the point were a very clear obvious midcore game like "frontiers" is conceded "a step in the right direction" while it is in fact, but man this game suck, like milking generations for a second time after the huge failure "forces" was a good idea at start, I don't really know how sonic team is thinking atp.

No one is appreciating 06, they appreciate project 06, saying 06 was good is deminishing the incredible work that ChaosX and his team did, as for unleashed, it's more nostalgia than anything, the day levels are stellar, the night levels are controversial but I kind of enjoy them, however the medals make the game horrible to play, shadow I agree completly, it's a really fun game, but everything else is delusional, secret rings is in the bottom 10 worst sonic games, black knight is fun but not much else, sonic heroes is pretty fun too, SA2 is nearly on the same level as SA1, frontiers after the updates is not that bad, and more importantly, mania and gens are some of the best sonic games ever made
