    It’s always better to be prepared and know your course before hand , for any eventuality, you should always be prepared

      Thanks Gregg. Yeah, that is definitely good advice, especially as it was in my home town. I just didn't expect it to happen and when you're pushing yourself towards the end of a race you're not always thinking straight. Never mind, onwards and upwards.

    Nice vid and channel, I was the guy chatting to the race director at the end. One of the sensors picked up my race chip even though I didn't cross the line and officially got third. Just one of those things on the end. Keep up the good work and I'll be following you on your entertaining adventures, thanks👍

    Another great video. I totally get your frustration....There were a few parts of the course where directions weren't that clear. I was a few places behind and just after finishing, someone mentioned that something had gone wrong for a few runners ahead. Interesting to see what happened! Keep up the good work....!

    • @ob1brand

    Really sorry hearing the full story and seeing your frustration in those moments when you realised what had happened. I’m not sure what I would have done in your position. On a positive it’s great to hear your fitness is ready for a pb and equally that the injury has gone. Hope you might consider entering a flat 10k?

      Thank you Rachel. Yeah, there was no way of hiding my frustration at the end. I do now wish I had turned back but in the heat of the moment I didn't know what to do. There's always next year though. Yep, very happy my speed is returning and my hamstring is holding up. I want to concentrate on Cross Country over the next couple of months but I may be able to squeeze in another road race haha.

      Thanks Andy. I do wish my day could have gone as well as yours. You smashed it! I am gutted but I've made peace with it. That second run really did help. They took our names and said they would be in touch but I haven't heard from them as yet. Fingers crossed.

    ahhh I’m so gutted for you lad! I was just under 42 mins and there was a marshall on a bike going up and down Holloway drive the whole time we were on there - they must’ve rushed someone down there after they heard about the cock up

    You did the right think Brett. I like the new look BTW. I've run quite a few races in my career (I've been at it for nearly 20 years) and this type of situation does happen. I don't think I've had this situation where I totally went off kilter but it is one of my worst nightmares, especially for new races. Hopefully the race organizers will learn and make it better for next year. Usually the race organizers will send you a free race entry for next year. I know it doesn't help for this year, but it's something. Enjoyed the video!

    • @ob1brand
      @ob1brand  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Eddie. In the moment I wasn't sure what to do at all. I felt a bit of a fraud crossing the finish line after not completing the full distance and wish I had turned back. Being in my home town I should have done a recce of the course but hindsight is a wonderful thing. At that point in the race you are at the high end of your threshold effort and not really thinking straight. Never mind though, on to the next one.

    • @runningoneddie
      @runningoneddie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ob1brand yup I figured that was your thoughts as well. Me? I'd probably have done the same thing or I wouldve found my way back to the missed turn and completed the course. Either way, I would've been upset.

  • @RichardHarper83
    @RichardHarper83 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Absolutely gutted for you Brett. I'd heard chatter about the lead runners going the wrong way, but couldn't work out where until I just checked out your Strava route for the day. I guess being a mid-pack runner has it's advantages in that I just follow the pack! Well done on a fantastic overall pace though, and good to hear that the injury has subsided! Onwards and upwards!

    • @ob1brand
      @ob1brand  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Richard. Yeah, sometimes you can end up in no man's land near the front of the pack with no one to follow. Never mind though, onto the next. Hope you had a great run and enjoyed the day. I'll be back for next years so hopefully see you there.

      @@ob1brand That's something I thankfully don't have to contend with :) I did - took it easy as I had a marathon the following weekend, but still surprised myself with my effort. I'll definitely be back too - although I'm sure I'll see you out and about in the area before then - especially at parkrun!

    Gutted for you mate. I would of been fuming also and had similar situation in a race and marshalls not directing people correctly. With the heat of the moment when racing it can be very disheartening and when people have passed you when you took a wrong turn, its even worse. But we live to fight another day and get news your injury is super fine now and you can back to full speed ahead!

It was so much we were sent the wrong way just that there was no one there at all to point us in the right direction haha. That's fantastic that you run as a guide, it must be very rewarding. There's no such thing as slow running though, you run at your pace and that is the perfect pace to run.

    Don't worry. Things happen for a reason. There must be a reason for you not going the right way and not PB-ing this time. At least you didn't actually get lost. I once was doing Black Combe fell race. It was very claggy, I've got through all the checkpoints and all I had to do was come down to the finish and I descended to the wrong valley. I ended up doing 4 miles longer than everyone else and I was running back to the finish along the road while everyone else was already driving back home past me.

    • @ob1brand
      @ob1brand  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Olga, that's very true. There's always another race. Oh no, that sounds awful. You found the right valley in the end and got 4 extra miles of fitness in the legs though. Fell running is a different set of skills and determination so great work.

    At least it was a good test of the hamstring Brett, if nothing else. Sucks, as it looked like you were confident of a good, if not best 10k time. Let us hope they give you a free entry for the next one to have another go.
    Bring back the tosh though, it looks weird without it 😛

I was really happy with my effort up to that point so I shall take that forward into the next one. Definitely signing up again next year, if only to defeat the demons and run the full course.
      Not sure what made me shave it off. I did do a double take in the mirror the next morning though haha

    A real shame for you. We can think of several races over the years which have suffered from inadequate organisation.
    The Hull Marathon of 2012. The lucky ones among us managed 25.9 miles. The unlucky 20 or so did 23 miles. Like yourself many of them on for a pb.
    A York 5k one year saw some stellar pbs as a marshal sent everyone on a shortcut.
    It's not just the waste of money of paying for a 10k and getting 5.8 miles. It's the investment of time and race energy in getting to 5 miles then having it snatched from you.
    Can totally understand your emotional frustration.
    At least you got a great and very engaging Vlog out of it...

    • @ob1brand
      @ob1brand  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. Yeah, in the moment i was very frustrated and just didn't know what to do or think. We learn from these things though and just come back stronger. I don't want this vlog to be a criticism of Raceways though. They put on a great event and 95%+ of the runners all had a brilliant race. Organising an event of this size isn't easy so these mistakes can happen. Your experiences don't sound very fun though, especially the Hull marathon. But we move on and put our focus on the next race. Thanks for watching.

    Well a pity in all aspects but you arent a bad runner even if you gone wrong you couldnt see it before you were running the wrong way. And you are honest of cource and dont accept the 3. place and well you live and you learn.,,........never trust a marshall but instead print out the map of the cource you shall run. I have been in the same place.......Congrates Brett. Inga DK.

    Why didn't you double-back with the other runners? I'd much rather have finished slower than roll up having run short, as that (in theory) is a guaranteed DQ. Feel for you though - can't imagine how frustrating that would be when you're on for a good time.

    • @ob1brand
      @ob1brand  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. Yeah, i agree, as I said at the end of the video I should done that and wish I had. But hindsight is a wonderful thing. In the video where I say I had gone the wrong way was the exact moment I realised I had. I was frustrated and a bit confused about what to do and knew my race was over. Out of the seven that went wrong four turned back and three continued as we didn't realised until too late.
