BIG Changes to the Terraces Around our Stone House!

- Things are about to kick off into full swing with our DIY renovation of our stone cabin in the foothills of the Italian alps. But first we need to flatten this terrace in order to have space to bring in all of our building supplies before we start pouring the concrete foundation inside of the house.

If I were you, I'd make it a priority to build that retaining wall. No matter what the engineer says, in these past few years rain and wind here on the Alps have being increasingly violent. I understand that stabilizing the house is the number one job, but seriously, don't let years pass and keep it monitored, especially this coming autumn. This is usually the season were landslides are most common.
Agreed, if the earth dries out before the new wall is built, falls are likely!
As a chilean engineer sister I agree on a retaining wall must be priority number one.
I honestly don’t know the retaining wall isn’t the number one priority.
Really irresponsible to not make a retaining wall a priority
Your ignorance is astonishing
The whole project is so wrong on so many levels! You dont mess up with mountains, hope l am wrong.....
It's wonderful you found talented workers that put same passion and dedication in what they are doing as you do.
yes, very lucky.we had 3 italian workers in Palermo ,Sicily for years and eventually we fired them and hired 1 east indian gentleman who could accomplish more by himself in a few hours than all 3 italians working all day.Youll come to learn in time that you will be charged sometimes 10 x more by Italians for the same work that an indian crew can do better.and cheaper.
Yeah sure, cool story bro. You working for the Indian chamber of commerce to allow more Indian immigrants into Italy?@@frankflex4465
@@frankflex4465well… this comment is really unnecessary! Everywhere you can find unprofessional workers, it’s a matter of knowing how to select them. I always found professional passionate and proud for their work people. I you’ are looking to pay unreasonably low rate then you get what you paid for.
Well im italian myself and sometimes i wouldnt trust hiring a Sicilian construction company doing a job. So you are generalising enormounsly.
@@Snooper810 generalizing? He had a problem with 3 workers in Sicily and concluded that this is a common standard in Italy? Sorry, but this is definitely an unacceptable statement.
Wow, you are not only renovating a house, you are renovating a mountain. So impressed with your vision.
Thank you! It’s going to be amazing !
Renovating a mountain? Destroying a centuries old terrace. That deserves a wow.
Your children are going to have a wonderful place to live in their future 😊
With all those rocks have considered using Gabion basket retaining walls? Basically wire mesh baskets filled with stone, it’s quick to build and and inexpensive especially as you already have the stone to fill the baskets
yet it wouldn't blend with the original retaining walls
We don't use those cheap solutions in italy
I renovated a 700 year old house in Spain myself, I know how much work it means to do such a project. I therefore like to watch your videos, they are fun and full of surprises. Just one remark: Could you give each episode a consecutive number? It would make it easier to keep track with you in the depth of TH-cam. Regards from just across the mountains, from Switzerland.
I agree, not easy to keep track if the videos are not numbered.
I totally agree. I want to go back and see if there are any I missed and as I go forward I don’t want to miss any.
I look at the dates.... 1 month ago, or 3 weeks ago, of 1 week ago, or 8 hours ago..... that gives a good indication....
What a pro that excavator operator🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜 is! Great of you to support the locals as well. Grady, so proud of you for talking Italian!!
I'm impressed by the amount of energy and commitment you are applying to this project.
I had trees cut and let them rest sideways on our mountain to build up the soil. So that terraces would catch leaves, etc. And prevent erosion. Its still working years later...❤ SLKW
Please consider that retaining wall at your earliest as that slate and shale is notoriously unstable, especially with rain and show pressure. Xx
Awwww, so exciting seeing something that seems like moving forward without loads of setbacks, so glad you have the motorised wheelbarrow, that you hired Andrea, & love hearing you use Italian words for which you don’t know the name in English :)
❤️💜🌞💜❤️
you should put in concrete pillions to sir behind the new stone wall. have it going 1m deeper than the wall, and have rebar coming out to lock into the morter you put in those parts of the rock wall you will place with concrete at the back of the rocks. that way it look like dry stack, but hold like a concrete one
Yes. So glad you hired an expert. He's brilliant.
In the Swiss and Italian mountains.... they have been building in that environment for many hundreds of years. It is in their blood. They know what they are doing.
Make certain that the drainage of the terraces is corrected so that those times when too much rain comes the crumbly soil does not become waterlogged and start slipping downhill while gliding down against the lubricated wet bedrock.
Yes. Slope it away from your house. And I’m glad you’re leveling the terrace. I think eventually you might want to do that on all your smaller terraces since with time erosion has made slopes on all of them. But since in the future you’ll probably be adding more gardens and animals you’ll appreciate the more level useable space.
Yes indeed‼️
@sgrvtl7183 leveling the surface will help slow down boulders but if the water becomes too high at bedrock there is possibility of downward slippage but as been said the walls are porous so buildup should no happen. Would be great to expand some of the terraces as to flatness so that it can attempt to slowdo boulders and make gardening area larger. Some fruit trees would be great if the snow does not kill them and maybe some esplanade along the wall faces for fruit bearing plants. I love stonework and terraces.
@sgrvtl7183 you can also start to mulch them with the weed vegetation and tree leaves as well as non-fat kitchen scrapes to build up the soil and maybe sift the soil of some of the small socks that can be used against filling in behind the terrace walls.
I absolutely Love how humble you Guy’s are & your content & family are beautiful! Thank you Heather for all your editing & taking care of everything behind the scenes❤!🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s
I really admire your guts and determination. Many would have thrown in the towel a long time ago. Good on you!! I enjoy your videos very much. Thank you.
I’m so happy for you. I can see in your face how excited you are. ♥️🇵🇷
This is so awesome to watch, yet a little nail biting edgy. The rocks are gorgeous, and will create a beautiful wall. Nothing to do but keep moving forward! Thank You for sharing!❤
Thank you for today. David has been entertaining and I love it.
It's so beautiful there. Great community of talented , skilled people.. Look at her smiling. She's so happy.
Hi guys ....Top vlog on TH-cam! Just found you last night and am hooked to your journey to restore your wonderful mountain home.
Your video's are so well put together and family so fun. 10/10 can't wait to see your next vlog!❤❤❤
I look forward to your video every Sunday. So excited to see the transformation taking place and am beyond happy for your sweet family. Thank you for sharing all of your hard work with us.
Wonderful worker you hired! You both are accomplishing an amazing feat! You're getting closer to the finish line with each stage successfully completed! Praise God! Many blessings
Very exciting developments! Must say though, I'm amazed your structural engineer raised no issues about the removal of secure underpinning of the top terrace wall - the thrust of that enormous mass above is transmitted not straight down but at a spreading diagonal vector (in cross-section). I get it that you plan to build a wall back: but this kind of structure isn't just 'a garden wall'. The forces involved with landslip, water action and frost heave are *serious* sh!t - I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you guys! 😮😂
That's soo TH-cam..isn't it...!?
You're surprised, as a NON structural engineer....at the decisions of the STRUCTURAL ENGINEER....!?!!
It's kind of the way the world seems to want to work these days....we seem to want to NOT trust in the knowledge of skilled, trained and experienced experts in a field and, instead, would rather believe in our own 'feelings', or something we saw on TikTok....!!!
@@andymccabe6712 Read Fjellstorms remarks below. This couple is smart and conscientious but reasonable minds want to know the process. L.
With all the climate change and crazy weather I would er on the side of caution and do the retaining wall asap .better safe than sorry. Good luck with it
You are right, I'm not a structural engineer. But I *do* have a lifetime's experience of large and small building projects in both administrative and hands-on ways - your assumption of ignorance on my part is, to coin a phrase, soo TH-cam! My remarks were well-intentioned towards this lovely couple and their fantastic project which we are privileged to vicariously share.@@andymccabe6712
Wow removing the wall. Yikes
You guys are just brilliant. There is nothing you guys can’t do ! I love your videos !
Yes, this is scary. I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains where rocks fall from a road cut. Only if it's solid granite does it stay put. More power and pray it stays dry enough to keep things static.
This is beautiful to watch and so for filling. It's a blessing on so many levels, for the whole family to see the love you put into your home.
I can't stop watching. Every bit of hard work , translated into a new piece of love you poured into your home.
Im not sure if you have done this or thought about it but will you be putting little surprises in the walls and boards as you build? If so would you share.... maybe a cross , a letter 💌
I was holding my breath watching him scrape the mountainside away. I was worrying about the potential for erosion and slides. Then you resolved my fears by telling us you are using a structural engineer (soil or civil engineer would have been better, no? ) and there is stone siting under that rock wall. Whew! Now I can relax and watch the rest of the video. 😊
Personally I would make the stone wall now in case you have alot of rain or something.
I'm glad you hired a professional!
Thanks for my weekly dose of Raising Voyagers Awe. Your vision, determination, and energy are truly awe inspiring.
Exciting news! That will be a beautiful hangout space! Can’t believe you’re on the way to pouring the floor! Wow!
I want to congratulate at this amazing guy and his family !! he knows what he is doing he will put a retaining wall for safety and also can make other houses 🏘️ 🏠 on the top 🔝, Rich or poor countries they do it , and why not him !!! and we would have more adventures to watch he 😊❤🎉🎊🎈🥂🍾😇🙏💕
I guyz are such a sweet couple and family.
Excellent video! This is such an exciting phase of your property development!!!
That was amazing - Andrea is extremely talented 🎉
Who knew watching an excavator could be so enjoyable. You're making great progress.
It’s so exciting that your starting to build back instead of having to tear out!! I’m sure it’s seemed much longer to you than me. I know there’s still a lot of hard work to come building back, but this work is necessary and having to dig out so much just seemed like unnecessary work. I know you needed to do some of it but sure seems like way to much. Anyway happy for your progress and happy you have equipment to do some of the heavy, very hard work. Really enjoy your video’s, they just don’t come often enough!! Wish there could be a new one every day. But I’m so happy we get a new one each week. Cant wait to see what you create with all the dirt and rocks. Keep on smiling, love u guys!
watching this with mixed feelings.
I am amazed how you are able to communicate quite well in Italian! The more you are forced to do so the better you will get! I had that when I went to Germany , I spoke not a word of German and then after six months I was able to understand a wee bit and after a year I was able to make myself understood! Now many decades later I speak it fluently with hardly an accent, and read and write it too. You are very courageous and brave to handle all the problems you are confronted with and not giving up, though I am sure you sometimes feel desperate and ask yourself what the heck you have taken on?!! Keep going, I am supporting you from Sri Lanka. Big hugs to you all.
Damn, that is exciting, and a little scary. Those stones are gorgeous! I am so glad that y'all are sharing your journey, with us. Thank you, and God bless!
How exciting! And scary at the same time! Can't wait for next week to see all the progress you are making. Regards from South Africa 🇿🇦
Watching this episode made me so nervous. What will happen when you get a lot of rain?
Thank you for letting me tag along from my bed to watch the world through your children’s eyes. My Grandaughter Jenna loves to watch your show and travel with your girls. For those who won’t be healthy to travel you have opened the world to us. Your laughter joy and natural fun makes it a pleasure. Can’t wait to see your beautiful home. The church bells and coo coo clock is my happy place. Love you guys.
I miss living in Vicenza Italy beautiful.... The stone could also be used for a private drive way or road if you so choose too. ty for the videos and great success to your family.
I can't wait to see the transformation of this cabin into a beautiful home.
Very impressive hard work on your property. I am happy to see how much you understand the language. The view of your stone house and land says it all. I enjoy watching each stone being moved, thank you. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I hear a song in my head: "Money, money, money....Monnnneeey"
How amazing, it is getting real now. All that hard work preparing for this next step is very exciting. Can't wait for your next episode.
So much love and commitment to build your beautiful home. God bless and waiting patiently to see the final results. Enjoying the journey in the meantime.
Incredible changes!!! Such amazing progress!!! 🥰🎶🙏❤️
Thanks so much!!
I look forwards for your amazing terrace! I'm sure that you asked all the permissions and, therefore, this means that all the security rules are respected to build the terrace. Don't listen people scaring you without real competence
Bradey, Heather & girls…THIS IS SO EXCITING! I still love all of your heart work & watching the transformations! Oh how I’d love to see it all someday!♥️
Well done for persevering with this huge project. It's always exciting when you make some big visual changes. Worst is to do a big job like digging out a floor you're going to fill back in - albeit you will feel happy in years to come when you're standing on it. Good job. Thanks
Well done Guys ! It looks amazing so far ! I just Love Italy ♥️♥️♥️
WoW So thrilled to see the wonderful progress! You will enjoy this for many years to come.
Lordy people, you sure like your work! It's going to be stunning when you've finished.
That digger on that terrace freaks me out. I would worry he would tumble right down.
My Andres is really good at his job and knows what and where to dig. How exciting for you another project underway😘
It's really wonderful seeing the progress being made. I love watching the things that you are doing and having done too make sure that the family is safe as you continue the process of making your dreams come true.😊
How exciting! You are moving on to the next step and its a BIG one. Your hard work, patience and perseverance is paying off. It's going to be grand! 😊❤
That is some impressive talent! Working with stone is not an easy process, the entire integrity of the are can be compromised if you don’t understand what you’re doing! I really enjoy watching the process and progress of your journey! ❤
I don't know about engineers, I don't entirely trust them! After stabilizing the house make a priority to stabilize the retaining walls and add to it what is necessary! Blessings 💕🤗
Wow, lots of work! Can't wait for the end of this transformation!!!
Lovely, thank you. This is so transporting! I hope you get it all organised before the winter, so you are snug indoors. Take care, greetings from NZ 🙂
...so, there is a potential, albeit unintended, that you may create your very own Old Faithful in the Italian Alps... This is quiet the undertaking. It's comforting that you've brought in the professionals for safety of all concerned. I'm amazed by your vision in what you hope to achieve. You and your magnificent house deserves nothing less. God speed!
This is great work you have a lot of patience
Thank you for sharing your video today, I enjoyed it very much 🥰
Great job this week! ❤
Wow ! What a project ! Amazing progress with the very skilled excavator ! Right on !
Make I priority the retaing wall before rain water takes you and the house for a ride down the hill
I will be happy when all the digging is done inside and outside! I know little Crusoe loves watching the diggers but I can't wait till the inside build starts! 😮😮😮😮 so much stone its amazing!
We also got advise from an expert in Spain and we ended up with a landslide into the just completed swimming pool. The insurance refused to pay….so much for the advise, get that retaining wall up a.s.a.p. Even experts don’t know how nature acts and reacts,
Wow! What an awesome transformation! Congrats, it looks really beautiful!
Waw ...a fantastic change ....a way better giving you a wonderful surrounding area by the housing...so much more space....pretty cool🎉💯💫
Me encanta ese lugar Dios los bendiga son un hermosa familia❤🎉
Amazing video, thank you so much it was so informative. Who knew all that was there? Please show more of what you do inside the house if you can? And please make the videos longer too. Thank you so very much.
IM SO EXCITED FOR YOU GUYS! Those big changes y'a
ll have been waiting for is finally here.
I’ve been watching since you first arrived in Italy, and have loved watching all you have done and am glad you hired some local talent to help get the work done. As a DYI’er myself sometimes even though I know I could do it myself, it really does make more sense to get someone that is a “professional”.. I am really looking forward to seeing the end result, as I’m sure you will be too! 😅
Keep it up and nobody will stop you yes I am right because we love your content and we watch your contents
good on you two ... keep pushing forward
These videos are awesome but when you are done you will have an EPIC before and after video....... 😃❤️🙏
Wow fascinating I could watch him all day!
Your committment to this project is wonderful. Definitely teaching your kids many valuable lessons.
Greetings from Michigan ❤ D Town!! But really from Germany originally 😊
So good to see the progress you have made. God bless your family and protect all you do.
Great work . Take care that rain wash can remove the silt and destabilise terraced edges above roadway below house.
Just a shout out to Andrea .. auguri bello lavoro... congrats Andrea beautiful work...
You must have lots of money to do all that work it not cheap in the old days they didn't have cars they walk and the old days they did it all by hands you guys are very bless and your children keep up the good work
Be safe, so glad you have people that know the terrain, and know what will calls landslides mudslides rock slides to keep you safe, so very happy so very grateful, God bless
Fantastic work! Luckily there are excavators...😄 It will be very exciting to follow the work on. Imagine if you had to dig all this out by hand! It had taken years.
Absolutely awesome digging job.
Now I know why my son insisted on going to heavy equipment College...it is interesting and fascinating...more space, as the terrace seemed narrow..lovely!
Can't wait to see the house completed..
Stay as long as they guve you and finish your dream..visa or not...never give up...
.
WOW❗️ I Know it's a Ton of work, but it looks so amazing. Yes it's "Blood-sweat& tears" but it's so worth it. 👍👍👍
Wow he is impressive in how he moves with the machinery! Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Have you gotten any further with the attorney And the appeal so you can live full time?
All I can say is "WOW" !!!
Y’all need a “come a long” to move real heavy things. Wow everything is going to turn out so beautiful! ❤
Have you also considered planting some trees with deep root systems to help with resisting corrosion and holding the newly created terraces in place? Just a few well placed trees..?
Dang! You guys are so impressive!
I love watching the progress. It’s like watching This Old House which I’ve been watching since day one.
I'd go as far as getting a drilling rig to drill large holes down into the bedrock putting thick walled pipe in for anchors attach the rebar to then form the walls. Those are some steep mountains your dealing with.
