So the whole ranking thing on basketball reference confused me. I organized it by wins, which made the standings disregard tiebreakers and what not. I'm not sure if you can organize by standings, but if you can that's how this should've been done which would've switched Cleveland and Toronto around. Fuck Anyways, I'm dead tired. 7 days left in school, retarded schedule. I'm probably not gonna post until it's over, but if all goes well, I think I'll return with a case for GOAT for my first vid of summer
Dom2k I think that this would be the best rule change ever. I'm glad to hear that you think that the grizzlies and the spurs is the best series of this year's first round. For my case it sucks because the grizzlies and the spurs are my favorite teams and it feels like they always play each other in the first round in recent years. Also, I think that's a major reason why the grizzlies don't get the respect they deserve. Mike Conley been showing out. #GrindHouse #Kawhi4MVP
...I agree! And it would actually be fair, especially for lower seeds in the west (e.g. Memphis) who are getting screwed by the present conference setup... TIME TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN
As for the Blazers being ranked 17th, I couldn't for the life of me figure out why basketball reference had it that way. According to them, Miami would make the playoffs in this setup, however the Blazers swept the season series against Miami. They are tied in record, and both own the same seed in their divisions in 3rd place. So as far as I know, their season series should break the tie giving it to Portland. However, if the season series was also tied, then I have no clue how the NBA goes about breaking that. Anyways, hope you enjoyed the video. Just thought it'd be interesting to see what these playoffs would look like in the setup that we all want. I was focusing less on who would actually win some of these since it's hypothetical, but still fun nonetheless. Dom2k because you were purely ranking them from wins not for standing, as all the tiebreakers are different when Toronto win the tiebreaker over Cleveland etc.
Nah nigga. The Kid from Akron kicked their ass last year they went crying for another superstar. And KD the bitch chose the Warriors over WASHINGTON (hometown) so he could avoid the East and not play the King early in the playoffs. Than man would cook him like he has his whole career
Lmao that's fucking stupid they where 1 and 1 without KD and they would have lost again without him KD is the best player on their team and changed everything in the NBA
Lol dom2k called the new Conference Finals the 3rd round. Tbh would probably follow a soccer naming format: Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, Finals
Matt the Backwards One in Europe and euroleague this year for the first time we didn't had groups and 15 teams played its other 2 times(a total of 30 games) the 8 best gp through and play a series(in Europe is best of five)and then you go to final four(I think NCCA is like that too) and play only one match to go though the final wich is one match too
The main issue here seems to be that if there were no conferences, then probably the number of times each team would play each one of the other 29 teams during the regular season would also change. There would be less intradivision, and I can definitely see teams like the Pelicans make it to the top 16 if they don't have to play the Grizzlies, the Spurs and the Rockets 4 times a season. So the table would be vastly different.
I think the biggest problem with this format is the finals would be lackluster. There's something appealing about the best east team facing the best west team. If it's two east teams or two west teams, it loses appeal because they play each other so often throughout the regular season..
But then a top tier east team (Cavs) would have a higher chance of a better record than a top tier west team (GSW/Spurs) because they have more games against the struggling conference
You could fix the travel time by making the series a best of 5 with a 3-2 format. The team with the better record has the first 3 games at home.. And provide maybe 3-4 days to travel between game 3 and game 4&5 Only the finals should be a best of 7
Meely warriors were aiming to sign Durant since 2012 when curry iggy and kd all played for team USA. It's part of the reason why they had cap space available
Does Lebron have to be a perfect human being in order not to be hated? I never understood all these unwarranted hate and criticism on Lebron. You don't have to like Lebron as a player. You don't have to accept Lebron's greatness but can't we all respect how Lebron is by far the most dedicated NBA superstar in history who never got himself into any serious troubles throughout his career despite his tough upbringing and extremely high expectations from the media? I mean seriously, Lebron never raped anybody like Kobe or had gambling problems like MJ but for whatever fuckin reasons, he's always getting criticized for every little things. It's insane how Lebron always get blamed for everything when the only thing that he has ever done wrong is his underwhelming performance in NBA Finals 2011. 1) MJ/Magic/Bill Rusell always made it to Finals, nobody ever gives a fuck. But now you want conferences to be eliminated simply because Lebron made it to Finals every year? 2) Coach Pop got praised for his 'smart' move of resting players in regular seasons. But guess what? The fans and media went fuckin insane when Lebron started following Coach Pop's resting strategy. 3) Most people make fun of Lebron's 3-4 Finals record and they choose to ignore the fact that winning a championship is a TEAM ACCOMPLISHMENT. You all are the ones who overvalue NBA championship title so why the fuck are you all complaining about Lebron coasting in regular seasons when NBA championship is clearly all it matters?
I always argue in favor of eliminating conferences come playoff time. The biggest benefit is that we would get to see east vs west teams matchups that just aren't possible now. Oh, and LeBron wouldn't waltz to the finals every year.
It would make the playoffs longer and worse due the excessive travelling can you imagine the clippers playing a 7 game series with washington for example the winning team would be wrecked tired and probably accumulate injuries which mike korzembe showed in one of his videos is becoming a serious problem for playoff teams, there's a reason the grizzlies relocated to memphis. In theory it's a great idea but it just wouldn't be practical. Conferences are here to stay for time being.
Dom, thank you for making this video. I have been asking myself this question for the last 5 seasons. It would be way more interesting to see different match ups every year instead of seeing the same old games.
You should do another one of these for 2018 because alot of twist happened with how gsw was 2 seed and Cavs we're like 4th seed rockets are 1 and alot of good teams dropped to 7-8th seed
I guess one way to ignore the travelling thing of concern would be have the east and west present as a way for assigning matchups in the allstar weekend and to simplify matches to have less effect on player but the conferences get removed in the playoffs and the 1 - 16 gets used
Keep working hard like you do dom. I can see the hard work you put in with each video. Your views don't get the recognition you deserve. I feel like your channel is as great quality as someone like mike korzemba just not the same subs/views as his. But if you keep working your ass off, there is no doubt in my mind (and your other fans' minds) that you will get the recognition and then some!
I think for the traveling issue for the no conferences format, the NBA should do series like the MLB. Instead of flying somewhere and leaving the next night, only to be back in two weeks, you play all of your road games against a specific team consecutively over a few nights. This eliminates all of the traveling that would be created
Always liked the idea of a top 16 championship series, i feel you would need to run it sort of like the ncaa championship and choose 4 locations to play all the games to remove the travel issues, only problem is losing home court advantage :/ Great video!
of course without conferences the regular season would go differently too, maybe increased resting in cross country trips, central time zone teams would probably be the safest from travel fatigue. But aside from that, this was so much fun
For the traveling and timing of an NBA without conferences, the NBA should spread out games and change to a best of five series, but that isn't going to happen because the NBA just wants more money from more games being watched.
Add 2 more teams, Seattle and somewhere like Pittsburgh or Cincinnati or San Diego. 32 teams in the league, each team plays one home game and one away game, that's a total of a 62 game season. That's fewer games, which makes travel easier and allows players to get more rest in between games and it's also a balanced schedule. At the end of the regular season, the top 16 teams go in the bracket like Dom has. The draft lottery is abolished, and it's just W-L record with PPG differential as tie breakers. Teams should be able to tank if they want to tank.
I think they should keep divisions to help with the travel issue during the regular season. at the end of the year, you get division banners and all, but then it'll go the best 16 for the playoffs
i get what you're saying and i agree but your seeding is wrong it would like this (1) GSW - (16) POR (8) UTAH - (9) WASH (5) CAVS - (12) MEM (4) BOS - (13) MIL (3) HOU - (14) IND (6) LAC - (11) ATL (7) TOR - (10) OKC (2) SAS - (15) CHI REGULAR SEASON SERIES TIED 1-1 (16) POR WON BY 2 (15) CHI WON BY 25 TIED 1-1 (11) ATL WON BY 17 (12) MEM WON BY 12 THIS ONE KINDA TRICKY (5) CAVS WON 6 OF 8 (6) LAC WON 6 OF 8 (7) TOR WON 4 OF 8 (8) UTAH WON 2 OF 8 CAVS BEAT LAC 2 - 0 IN REGULAR SEASON SERIES
To offset the elimination of the conferences for the playoffs, maybe shortening the season to 60 games instead of 82, which can help with preserving players health and no excuse for superstars to rest so much down the stretch.
Well... you could erase the conferences only for the standings, but keep them into consideration when making the schedule. And during the playoffs, you'd need to switch back to the old Finals formats of 2-3-2 games, so you don't have teams travelling across the country so often.
To avoid travel times you could have all series played in neutral arenas, however that would cause problems for fans who have work/school who want to watch their teams play
It would be interesting to see the Warriors vs Bucks in a 7 game series, the Bucks' length has always given Golden State problems, remember they were the team to end the Warrior's unbeaten run last season! So I think GSW would win overall, but it wouldn't be as easy as you think, especially as they'll be tired from playing Cleveland in the series before.
For real, anyway keep doing your thing my bro, you're a big inspiration, check out my channel if you have a chance and please subscribe if you like it 🙏🏽
For the traveling part. What about give the team with more wins 3 straight home courts in the beginning then 3 for the other team? I mean people will value home court advantage more and the 'resting' in regular season won't happen as often..
Shorten the regular season so that every team plays each other twice (home and away). This would remove b2b games, there would be less injuries and players would be way less tired come playoff time making the traveling much easier. Also, tiebrakers and seeding would be fair so that the best teams would get the best seeds (if you are 1-1 in your regular season series you can determine the winner by total points difference). If 58 regular season games is not enough you can have teams play the teams in their divisions 3 or 4 times so there would be 62 or 66 regular season games. Tiebrakers and seeding would be less fair but it's still much better than the current system imo.
I like how instantly everyone says Lebron would be a second round exit most years, but you don't realize if he knew the format was like this, he would just perform to the higher standard necessary to get his team that top 4 seed, then in the first round be able to tone it down because of the huge talent gap between a 4-2 seed to a 14-12 seed. Maybe they wouldn't be a top 4 seed this year, but they wouldn't be lower than 6, I can guarantee that. Man, people just love to hate greatness.
Great video. But wouldn't the bracket be a little different, with the two seed and their match up being at the bottom. And the rest alternating back and forth?
I like the idea honestly because of the idea we get to see the matchups of players that will probably never make it to the Finals. It'd also give LeBron a tougher path to win, and boost his credentials if he could win this whole bracket
if u get rid of the conference and everyone plays every other home and away itd be a 58 game season add other 7 game play off round itd still be 65 games so the issue of travelling pretty much sort itself out
I am from australia, I have a question. Why are the finals split up into two conferences? I'm thinking I would want to two best teams to be able to play against each other in the final...seems sometimes the two best teams are in the same conference. Doesn't make sense to split them up still for the finals. Why do they do it?
The two best teams are almost always from the Western conference. The NBA created conferences because of travel time, hence why teams in the same conference play each other more often. Also, in the playoffs with tighter schedules, the travel times from East to West would pose a huge problem, so unless there's some way around that, this isn't likely to change.
I like the idea of getting rid of conferences. However, by eliminating conferences, as shown by your bracket, average teams make it too far, and it kills the excitement of the bigger games. I'd rather see Cavs vs Pacers in the first round than Golden State playing Milwaukee in the semifinals.
So the whole ranking thing on basketball reference confused me. I organized it by wins, which made the standings disregard tiebreakers and what not. I'm not sure if you can organize by standings, but if you can that's how this should've been done which would've switched Cleveland and Toronto around.

Dom2k YES! I love the case for the GOAT series
Dom2k Good luck on finals fam, I'm almost done with my freshman year at college too. I can't imagine the drag for you being a TH-camr as well.
Dom2k I think that this would be the best rule change ever. I'm glad to hear that you think that the grizzlies and the spurs is the best series of this year's first round. Dom2k well the cavs would play the spurs, and maybe they'd lose to them
Dom2k I
This shit would make the regular season important.
Rodney Fredericks
yes it would
people wouldnt sit out games
Central time zone teams would end up having a considerable advantage over their west and east coast adversaries. Especially come playoff time
in turn making reg season more entertaining imho! and making playoffs/finals even more intense! I think this would be better
...I agree! And it would actually be fair, especially for lower seeds in the west (e.g. Memphis) who are getting screwed by the present conference setup... TIME TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN

AidanJH9 i hope he does a wilt one
AidanJH9 ikr
AidanJH9 probably in the offseason
AidanJH9 he didn't upload more because kareem is the goat it's that simple
dark circle kareem is literally nowhere near the goat lmao
we could get rid of conferences and still have the schedule skewed towards people in your region
four twenty yes please
Maybe they can have conferences like the NFL were its not always based on east and west i.e. like AFC North or NFC east
Thats why divisons were made...you play the 4 teams in your divison 5 times a year
great idea
Even in a no conference playoffs the spurs and grizzlies STILL find each 🙄
Abdullahi Ali z right lol
The warriors don't need Kevin Durant, they just need him to not be on OKC
NBAbram man that's the smartest thing I ever heard.
I saw that on ig lol facts
NBAbram seen a meme and now u think u know shit

Great vid man keep it up
They should change the conferences to North and South. Imagine that!
Does not matter. Literally no team comes close to Warriors this year
Qiushi Hu too bad they're not gonna win the finals
Qiushi Hu L, Spurs are their toughest opponent and are even teams
C&C Vlogs u do realizethe spurs blew a 22 point lead to the gsw WITHOUT KD
Kawhi Leonard #GOAT #LOCKUP #Spurs4Life wasn't a 26 point lead?
Pry PS3/PS4 who's going to beat them ? they better be stopped before the finals because Cavs weak ass aren't touching them
Golden State really only signed Durant so they'd have no competition in the west
Meely warriors were aiming to sign Durant since 2012 when curry iggy and kd all played for team USA. It's part of the reason why they had cap space available
i love ur profile picture.
Meely Just copying LeBron James. Stacking talents in a weak conference
Brian Cheng well the west is a strong conference therefore Kd formed a stronger alliance
Caped Baldy you bandwagon triggered
Man why do you only have a a hundred thousand subs, you're one of the best NBA youtubers ever. Keep up the good work

nah, we hate him because people like you love him enough to put in time out of your day to post shit no one is going to read
Aegistahl freak
LeBron sexuals OOF
I always argue in favor of eliminating conferences come playoff time. The biggest benefit is that we would get to see east vs west teams matchups that just aren't possible now. Oh, and LeBron wouldn't waltz to the finals every year.
Love ya videos bro shit interesting af 💯💯
the goat paul zipser aka zipsanity in the thumbnail
Jacob Knighten yup SEE RED
Aman Singh boy u know zipser is the goat
Aman Singh ither way. LeBron will have a ghost to chase in Chicago
Jacob Knighten the quintessence of this thumbnail is that Zipser the goat would explore durants weak defense and lock his ass up
It would make the playoffs longer and worse due the excessive travelling can you imagine the clippers playing a 7 game series with washington for example the winning team would be wrecked tired and probably accumulate injuries which mike korzembe showed in one of his videos is becoming a serious problem for playoff teams, there's a reason the grizzlies relocated to memphis. In theory it's a great idea but it just wouldn't be practical. Conferences are here to stay for time being.
justlookaroundpeople if that were to happen the only remedy i see is there being some neutral court in the middle for them to play on
then there's no point to win games and get higher seeds because there is no home court advantage
Jonathan Jeong i meant like for super far distances but i get what you mean
justlookaroundpeople exactly
Legitt Par if i was supporting my local team i wont wanna travel miles to see my team!
Your videos are my favorite basketball vids
Dom, thank you for making this video. I have been asking myself this question for the last 5 seasons. It would be way more interesting to see different match ups every year instead of seeing the same old games.
Very good projection and analysis. Made sense.
Thanks!
Great video Dom, I really like how well thought-out and structured your videos are!
Maybe cutting conferences just for the playoffs might be a good idea
I honestly love this channel cause the videos are so long and have so much content!!
absolutely LOVE your content Dom2k!
The jazz-clipper series has been more of a jazz curse, you have to remember. Game 5 was the 1st game in a very long time jazz had no injuries
Actually I take that back because of last years injuries
There's only one thing better than this. Dom upload a case for goat
Y'all don't realize that conferences are not only a way to reduce travel, but a way to make sure there are more regions that get playoffs on TV.
Can you do this for other years! That would be AWESOME!!! I love your channel btw.
The finals rating would go down tremendously. Because whoever wins between the Cavs and Warriors would run the table easily
what do you mean? A spurs/warriors nba finals would be awesome
I think for the traveling issue for the no conferences format, the NBA should do series like the MLB. Instead of flying somewhere and leaving the next night, only to be back in two weeks, you play all of your road games against a specific team consecutively over a few nights. This eliminates all of the traveling that would be created
After all that's happened in this year's free agency, eliminating conferences my become a reality
Your monotone, expressionless voice is very soothing to listen to.
keep it up fam.
if everyone went all out final 4 is 1GSW V 4HOU and 2SAS V 3CLE
Always liked the idea of a top 16 championship series, i feel you would need to run it sort of like the ncaa championship and choose 4 locations to play all the games to remove the travel issues, only problem is losing home court advantage :/ Great video!
Been with this nigga since summer 2016, now he's almost at 150k.. keep grinding 👌🏽👌🏽
Great vid man
You make good vids. Keep up the good work 👍
of course without conferences the regular season would go differently too, maybe increased resting in cross country trips, central time zone teams would probably be the safest from travel fatigue. But aside from that, this was so much fun
The NBA 2k series should def explore this concept like adding it to myLeague
yo dom been watching your videos for a while and love your content! Decided to leave a comment this time, keep up the good work bro!
For the traveling and timing of an NBA without conferences, the NBA should spread out games and change to a best of five series, but that isn't going to happen because the NBA just wants more money from more games being watched.
bro Dom I miss you using this sound track on your vids. please bring it back it makes your commentary sound even more epic!
That rockets vs grizzlies match-up would be fun. It's pretty much all offense vs all defense.
This vid is sick🔥🔥
great video👍👌
Add 2 more teams, Seattle and somewhere like Pittsburgh or Cincinnati or San Diego. 32 teams in the league, each team plays one home game and one away game, that's a total of a 62 game season. Teams should be able to tank if they want to tank.
for putting the grizzlies in the semi finals, i am so happy thx dom2k
Possibly Naming Rounds:
Conference Quarterfinals - Round 1
Conference Semifinals- NBA Quarterfinals
Conference Finals - NBA Semifinals
NBA Finals - NBA Finals
How does it feel that the 1 seed is only winning because an 8 seed loses its pg
You right about the western conference finals being the actual finals in this scenario. Last year OKC would have played GSW in the finals for sure.
1:21 Does anyone know what that effect on Lebron/Timmy is called?
Dopest page bro!!!
Dim 2k you deserve 5,000,000 subs or even more you are so good at TH-cam keep up the good work
Clippers vs Hawks: Who chokes first?
You should do what if the 2016 playoffs didn't have conferences.
I think they should keep divisions to help with the travel issue during the regular season. at the end of the year, you get division banners and all, but then it'll go the best 16 for the playoffs
i get what you're saying and i agree but your seeding is wrong it would like this
(1) GSW - (16) POR
(8) UTAH - (9) WASH
(5) CAVS - (12) MEM
(4) BOS - (13) MIL
(3) HOU - (14) IND
(6) LAC - (11) ATL
(7) TOR - (10) OKC
(2) SAS - (15) CHI
REGULAR SEASON SERIES
TIED 1-1
(16) POR WON BY 2
(15) CHI WON BY 25
TIED 1-1
(11) ATL WON BY 17
(12) MEM WON BY 12
THIS ONE KINDA TRICKY
(5) CAVS WON 6 OF 8
(6) LAC WON 6 OF 8
(7) TOR WON 4 OF 8
(8) UTAH WON 2 OF 8
CAVS BEAT LAC 2 - 0 IN REGULAR SEASON SERIES

So I think GSW would win overall, but it wouldn't be as easy as you think, especially as they'll be tired from playing Cleveland in the series before.
The length definitely does give them problems, I just think in a series anyone without mass firepower doesn't stand much of a chance against them tbh.
For real, anyway keep doing your thing my bro, you're a big inspiration, check out my channel if you have a chance and please subscribe if you like it 🙏🏽
you the man dom.
For the traveling part. What about give the team with more wins 3 straight home courts in the beginning then 3 for the other team? I mean people will value home court advantage more and the 'resting' in regular season won't happen as often..
Not gonna lie, those second round games are lowkey fire
Great Video!!!!!
I think instead of 1 through 16 in one bracket. Separate it from odds and evens. 1,3,5,7,9 and etc in one bracket and the evens in the other
Shorten the regular season so that every team plays each other twice (home and away).
Mike Korbenza=Dom 2K the goats
Yup
Could you do this for last years playoffs??
Very good point. Nice video
I feel like when Blake got injured the clippers played much better
I like this better.
Dom2k the teams don't have to travel. The NBA can make the playoffs like the All-Star weekend.
Cavaliers would definetly not go far if it does happen I can tell you that.
This would only work if the NBA season was 58 games. Let each team play twice against each other, without taking conference in to consideration
the first series gotta be best of 5 again
I like how instantly everyone says Lebron would be a second round exit most years, but you don't realize if he knew the format was like this, he would just perform to the higher standard necessary to get his team that top 4 seed, then in the first round be able to tone it down because of the huge talent gap between a 4-2 seed to a 14-12 seed. Maybe they wouldn't be a top 4 seed this year, but they wouldn't be lower than 6, I can guarantee that. Man, people just love to hate greatness.
the NBA could make the schedule for the series 3 home, 3 away and possibly an epic game 7 clash back home
2:50 I know I'm 3 years late but I would've love to have seem Clips vs Hawks, since I live in atlanta and my fav player is CP3 lol
Great video. But wouldn't the bracket be a little different, with the two seed and their match up being at the bottom. And the rest alternating back and forth?
Cavs didn't give up the seed. They were sadly playing poorly. And also, they would've been first seed if JR and Kevin love didn't get their injuries.
Conferences should only exist during the regular season, but it shouldn't be a factor in the playoffs.
I feel like they should do like the Super Bowl does and pick a host arena for the playoffs or multiple host arenas for each playoff series
I like the idea honestly because of the idea we get to see the matchups of players that will probably never make it to the Finals. It'd also give LeBron a tougher path to win, and boost his credentials if he could win this whole bracket
if u get rid of the conference and everyone plays every other home and away itd be a 58 game season add other 7 game play off round itd still be 65 games so the issue of travelling pretty much sort itself out
A better way to do this would be to have a conference, but the teams in the playoffs are ranked 1 to16 in one bracket
now that paul george is on the thunder, we could see a series featuring harden and george
Dom2k didn't think of travel, yeah that makes sense
I like the idea of getting rid of conferences. However, by eliminating conferences, as shown by your bracket, average teams make it too far, and it kills the excitement of the bigger games. I'd rather see Cavs vs Pacers in the first round than Golden State playing Milwaukee in the semifinals.
And the Celtics vs Bulls series is tied now👏👏👏👏
Spurs would've won this year in top 16 teams
