In case you're wondering our primary anchor is a 65 LBS Mantus M2. This is rated for a boat of our size in winds above 50 knots. It is considered a Storm anchor for our boat.
I agree with you that it was the scope in that depth of water. With any anchor, all you can do is drop it, set it, and hope that it holds. Anchor alarms are there for that reason and I learned through you that you can motor toward the anchor to help it reset. Happened to us at Cape Lookout ina an overnight pop-up storm. We keep extra dive masks onboard to wear during weather at the helm. Not pretty, but it works. it's hard to see when rain is coming at you sideways in your eyeballs.
We use about 35’ of heavy 3 strand and a chain hook for a snubber in heavy weather. It takes a bit of the shock out. A Kellet might have helped keep the anchor angle a little better, but maybe not in winds that heavy
Absolutely fantastic episode guys. We all learn more and more through the experiences we live through in life. Some experiences we live through personally and some through the lives of others. Blessings as you continue in your passage.
That was so engaging and authentic guys. Im sure most would agree that it felt like we were right there beside you the whole time. Great video and a superb edit. You didn't need to stress though as Captain Oso had you all covered! Stay safe.
You described so vividly what goes on during the storm when on the boat, the preparation, the tension and how time drags on during the worst of gusts. I can so relate to my storm experience, although just in the Adriatic. Stay safe and keep on being authentic and inspiring!
Jordan and Kaylee, what a storm. You even have me worried for a little bit. That was exciting but wasn't for you all. Well you're slowly heading toward the tropics. Poor little Oso didn't know what to make of it. Looking forward to see your alls baby in the future. Take care and have fun when you can. Thanks and catch you next time.
WOW, that was EPIC!!! That had everything: action, comedy, ransoming, storms, and Pirates! Got my vote for best script / screenplay of the year fo'sure :-) These are so fun to watch and the anticipation of the next video is fun as well. Haven't had this much fun since GOT. Take care!
Great episode! Pirates, Osorio kidnapped, Gail force winds, anchor drag!! Lots of excitement. Feels good to be out on the water, but you have to respect mother nature. At the end you said you were grateful to be through the storm and in a calm Anchorage. Then you looked over and said " well it's still 14 knots"..... and my mind immediately went "YAH!!! LETS GO WINDSURFING OR KITEBOARDING!!" LOL Thanks guys for keeping it real and fun.
Not sure how big your anchor is. I've sailed the coast of Alaska for 25+ years and my main anchor is twice as big as recommend. I carried 4 anchors all the time. One was a massive 50 pound classic "rock hook" fluted anchor I call the "Popeye" anchor. Fortunately it could be disassembled for storage low in the boat. I carried it for years thinking it was overkill and I should quit carrying it till I got stuck in a 3 day storm with gusts to 60+ miles and hour in a rocky anchorage that was 100 feet deep 100 yards from shore. The "Popeye" anchor was the only anchor I had that would "hook up" in those conditions. I am glad I had it. You will be visiting a lot of places with a lot of different anchoring conditions and bottoms. It's best to have a variety of anchors and not depend on one to solve all anchoring problems. Thanks for the video. Sail On!
Hilarious bit with the pirates and Oso. Loved it. Glad you weathered the tropical storm ok...great video footage too. Thanks can't wait till next video.
Way to keep your wits about you in the long sustaining storm! Glad all of you are safe! Great lessons, and great rescue of Oso!!! Great Video as always and thank you for showing us all sides of sailing!
Wow…you guys nailed it on all counts! Producing a beautifully shot and edited episode in a middle of a storm! 😳😱 Thank you for capturing what it really means to live on the water.
Such a rollercoaster! From the joy of Operation Rescue Oso, to the tense adrenalin rush of Anchor Drag 2022, to the pleasures of a nice sushi meal with your shipmates. A wonderful episode. But, now I'M exhausted.. i think i need a nap!! ~Cheers
Those that have been there on their boat thru a blow like that will truly understand the stress and emotions that are racing through your head faster than the wind is blowing at that moment. There is no time to cry, no time to yell. Sometimes it is bad enough that you would literally sell your soul to remove you from that moment. But the only thing you can do is focus on the tasks at hand and soldier on. Then when it is finally over and all is calm, you take a moment like Jordan did and you think to yourself "Holy Shit - that was nuts". Take a minute, cry if you need to to relieve the leftover stress and adrenaline - then have a rum and congratulate yourselves on a job well done! This is how great sea stories are made.
Great you made it thru well. Love your strong wills and determination.. I have sailed here and there thru my life of almost 7 decades and sailed dinghies to schooners and even live in a 19th century shipbuilders house in Maine AND I HAVE NEVER HEARD THE "Swallow the Anchor" story.. or I forgot lol.. possible so thanks for that and your final words of wisdom I will hear again as I listen once more to get it right. ... oh yes "with all our learned experiences we are able to look to the future with a little more confidence and a little less fear." Nice Jordan !!
I look forward to your adventures every Saturday. This was a topper for sure. Had my blood pumping. I pray for your safety every week as I'm sure others do too. Be safe!
Des stealing the dinghy while Jordan distracted nearly had me on the floor laughing, you could have waited for my broken ribs to heal but no matter. Glad you guys reset the anchor, that didn’t seem like a sustainable situation motoring into the wind, especially since you hadn’t reached the peak of the storm. Not to mention relying entirely on your auxiliary to keep you off the rocks for such a long time. Glad you survived unscathed and probably learned some lessons and gained experience. Cheers
Pirating historically has been very profitable. You may have found your calling. I am glad you found a storm pro that's a real plus. Wind to your back, from wind in your face! Love ya al!
Awesome video and detailing everything in a serious situation. Very nice to have us experience it with you guys. I will never forget when I was in the Navy and patrolling the Pacific Northwest hunting Soviet subs during the Cold War. My ship was 585 feet, 56 feet of beam, and displaced 8900 tons and there were times I felt we need a way bigger ship in those seas. I love watching your new videos every Saturday morning with coffee. Thanks again!
Yahoo! We did it. I feel as if I went thru it with you, adrenaline and all. Whew! I'm native Floridian and ex-sailor and although I've been off the water for a while, I still remember the blows! The ransom of Oso was precious! Your plot for his return very clever! I was greatly amused and that ain't so easy these days. Thanks you guys, it was a marvelous episode! We did good, didn't we?
Watched from Zingaro the other week, so was looking forward to seeing the storm from your view. The fact that you managed to film so much of the storm is a credit to you all. Much enjoyed, thank you.
Thank you for sharing this experience and how you guys handled it. Really glad to see you getting through it and applying what you know to overcome the challenge. I would have not been so prepared and ready.
you all did a great job working together and kept a level head during the toughest time of such a storm. Glad to see you all doing well and glad to know you all are so well seasoned sailors.
Well done guys, that was a big one! We were in a similar situation with a catamaran on the Pacific coast, a heavy winter storm approaching dishing out 40kt sustained with gusts over 50. Our tactic was to minimize fetch, 8/1 scope, and a 40' bridle attached to deck cleats. The bridle served 2 purposes. On one hand it really helped to keep the boat weathervaned bow to the wind, and it also absorbed a lot of the shock from big gusts that threatened to unseat our anchor. We watched as a dozen boats dragged and several were lost that day while ours managed to hold firm. Cheers!
James seems like a good guy. Watched some of his content and OMGoodness he seemed to be having the worst streak of luck there for awhile. Good to see him back enjoying life on the water. Atticus 2 is so well prepared with all her "bells & whistles". It doesn't take all the work out of it but she is light years ahead of ole "Atti 1".
Great job guys, I also have the Mantus 65 as my storm anchor. Tayana 37 Pilot house. Your right about the scope, every bit helps. I have used 300 ft chain, then 100 foot 3/4 nylon for the stretch ability. IMHO. once you break free no anchor will stick, when the boat is doing 7 knots, just skips along the bottom. Thanks for the great video, cheers good luck. Pop's
Wow that was incredible,,,, I was wondering what it would be like to be right there with you guys when I realized that my heart was racing,,,, my hands were clenched and I was right there with you,,,,, thanks for having me aboard,,,, whew,,, I'm out of breath LoL,,,, keep up the good work,,,,, Phillip
I would have crapped my pants, I don't know how you guys got through that. Great video production, great story. Nice to see the playfulness with James (Zingaro is another one of my favorite channels), Oso, and the dingy. I'm glued to this channel now!
How on earth you have the energies or inclination to video at dire times, eludes me. 1000 brownie points and congrats for beating the dragged anchor. This epi had everything. Thanks guys.
Hey guys! Glad everyone made it thru the storm! Watching you all work together really makes me look forward to when we do our own sailing! Hopefully the rest of your time there is less stressful! Fair winds friends! ☀️⛵
Congrats on the BABY guys such awesomes news. You have a lot to prepare for so the best of wishes to you both. May the wind always be at your back and the son in your face and safe happy sailig. Now show your kid the world in all its beauty and wonders......
Great story, great video, great outcome. So enjoyed the positive and smart attitude. Your team will over come it all! As always have fun be safe see you next week. Perhaps a calm fishing video? 😃

More like 20' of water, and sometimes I thought it was just the pile of chain holding us. When the wind shifted we'd suddenly move sideways until the anchor took over. We were just pulling out chain. My big fear was swinging sideways like a pendulum and coming dangerously close to other boats swinging at a different rate. Your video reminded me of being on deck in sideways rain and wondering when it would calm down. I became a believer in chain when a powerboat cut our anchor line on Memorial day weekend (years ago). 1 am, drifting sideways through an anchorage trying to find the spare anchor in the dark locker.
Great episode guys!!! Firstly good seamanship in a difficult situation, then having kept such cool heads that you could take great video when that was likely the last thing you were thinking about….. very impressive. Also just a comment about the “Anchor” app. It has changed my life; you can have it running beside you in bed so you don’t have to rush onto the deck every 10 minutes, but more importantly running it on 2 phones allows you to leave one on the boat and then monitor the boat remotely from the 2nd phone while you explore ashore out of site of the boat. OK, this has to be said. This video is a masterpiece and others should study it. You could have had a full production and editing team and not done a better job. I've watched many similar videos, but the way you showed and described the situation leaves all others in the dust. I learned so much because you both have such an incredible knack for articulating and documenting what is going on. I always worry about motoring too fast and over running the anchor in that situation. Definitely takes a lot of concentrating when it’s not resetting. Glad you finally set… geez you dragging again with more wind …you are stressing me out!!! Great episode guys…n the edge of my seat watching…
It’s always the best sleep after a day like that. At least the worst came in daylight. Never seems to be the case for us. Great job and great episode as always!

What is the bottom, grass, mud, sand, marl??
Authentic story telling without resorting to overdramatising. Bravo.
You guys are TH-cam treasures. Stay safe
I always put a extra line around my roller furled jib too
Amazing that you recorded through the entire storm. You handled the stress incredibly well!
Absolutely fantastic episode guys. We all learn more and more through the experiences we live through in life. Some experiences we live through personally and some through the lives of others. Blessings as you continue in your passage.
The cutting out party against Zingaro was peak YT sailor drama. Well done.
That was so engaging and authentic guys. Im sure most would agree that it felt like we were right there beside you the whole time. Great video and a superb edit. You didn't need to stress though as Captain Oso had you all covered! Stay safe.
Your closing sentiments were most inspirational, not just for sailors but every pursuit of life, thanks man!
21:13 thoughtthat was SV Basik for a second. Good job guys, glad the baby is safe!
I remember watching this storm during James' livestream and he pointed out you guys in the anchorage.
Jordan: "any final words? any last wishes? chuckle, chuckle" Thank heavens for your preparedness, knowledge, skill and friends. Well done!
You described so vividly what goes on during the storm when on the boat, the preparation, the tension and how time drags on during the worst of gusts. I can so relate to my storm experience, although just in the Adriatic. Stay safe and keep on being authentic and inspiring!
So happy yall weathered the storm Alex. Blessings to all and calm winds and beautiful sunsets. God Bless

Thank you for reminding me that I need to get back to Bermuda- it’s been a long time.
You guys did a great job there. I'm tired just from watching, I need a nap now.. great show..:)
Great job filming through all that and editing it together in a way that kept all the tension and anticipation for us.
Congratulations !
Thru the storm. . .
Makes you stronger.
Concur the world next !
I love you guys and I love Ryan and Sophie. To see you guys together makes my day. 🙂
I was wondering when this video was coming out ever since I watched James' live steam.
Take care!
> Nominate Chris Sterba for best comment of this series. You said everything on my mind.
Glad all is well with Atticus 2 and the anchoring during the storm... Sheesh I bet that is beyond stressful... Be safe Atticus team!! 👍👍
So glad you guys came through the storm with everyone ok, especially that tiny life in the womb!
Great episode! Pirates, Osorio kidnapped, Gail force winds, anchor drag!! Lots of excitement. Feels good to be out on the water, but you have to respect mother nature. Lived, learned and survived to sail another day. All one can ask for. Bravo and great episode ⛵️
Great job! Greetings from Scotland, UK.
I must say, out of all the sailing channels I watch, you guys are my favorite.

Watched from Zingaro the other week, so was looking forward to seeing the storm from your view. The fact that you managed to film so much of the storm is a credit to you all. Much enjoyed, thank you.
Great video, you did an awesome job capturing the angsiety of riding out a storm.
65lb anchor and 300 ft of chain! That is preparation.
great jb you all did!!!! even Oso got thru it!
Thank you for sharing this experience and how you guys handled it. Really glad to see you getting through it and applying what you know to overcome the challenge. I would have not been so prepared and ready.

Yay!!! We did it….., Well, you did it!! Lol. Hoping the best for you all going forward!!
Good job! And thats how you learn by doing! I'll bet your doubly thankful you have the extra crew aboard now! Good video!
Great Job Atticus Crew!!!!!!!👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙏

This video was epic. Outstanding video and more than that, excellent job during that storm. Sleep well you earned it.
🫣 Wow! So glad you’re all safe.
This is by far the funniest and best episode I've seen. Thank you and keep doing what your doing. Congratulations on your little one on the way.
Well done guys. Great video. Cheers
I would have crapped my pants, I don't know how you guys got through that. Great video production, great story. Nice to see the playfulness with James (Zingaro is another one of my favorite channels), Oso, and the dingy. I'm glued to this channel now!
Glad you guy's are ok
Favorite line, Steve “ it’s nice that we experience it, i’d like to stop experiencing it now” 😆
Be safe and keep rolling Atticus crew!! 👍👍
You take us with you in every adventure... thank you so much!
How on earth you have the energies or inclination to video at dire times, eludes me. 1000 brownie points and congrats for beating the dragged anchor. This epi had everything. Thanks guys.
Excellent video - and great how you dealt with this adventure! Thanks
Well done to the Atticus crew! Great video of your experience.
one the best episodes ever, and I think I have watched all of them.
Beautiful photography in adverse conditions. Jordan does a great job as captain through the night!
…and I was complaining about a tricky docking today. Geez! You guys worked really well as a team though!
Amazing chapter, guys.
Glad your safe, I’ve waiting for this video
Was waiting for this to come out, after seeing your both from James's boat live feed of the storm
Great video. So glad to see that the boat and everyone is ok.
I liked the way you guys summed up at the end. Narrating and video is really good. :-)
Great story, great video, great outcome. So enjoyed the positive and smart attitude. Your team will over come it all! As always have fun be safe see you next week. Perhaps a calm fishing video? 😃
Wow! That was quite an ordeal to go through. You handled it well. You stuck with what needed to be done. Much respect.
I became a believer in the 30# Bruce anchor in Florida's sandy bottoms. (33' CSY) I'd pick it over the CQR. But, I never anchored in 40' of water in high winds.
Anticipation for this video was off the hook 😜
Excellent video. You’re enriched by the experience
Brilliant!! Had the best time today with you guys! Thank you for sharing your adventures.
Gnarly. Very well done in all aspects.
What a wonderful way to start my Saturday morning. Great episode!
Outstanding!! Brava/Brovo🙌🙌
Always more scope🤔👍😎
Great episode guys!!! Firstly good seamanship in a difficult situation, then having kept such cool heads that you could take great video when that was likely the last thing you were thinking about….. very impressive. Also just a comment about the “Anchor” app. It has changed my life; you can have it running beside you in bed so you don’t have to rush onto the deck every 10 minutes, but more importantly running it on 2 phones allows you to leave one on the boat and then monitor the boat remotely from the 2nd phone while you explore ashore out of site of the boat.
Fair winds and hope to see you in the med!
Bill and Liz
Good for you. Great adventure. All the best.
As they say, everyone wants to be a sailor until there are sailory things to be done. Kudos guys, good skipper, great crew! Thanks for filming it, I couldn't have thought of doing that in those circumstances!
As only one example of many, when you described how you needed to read the water to predict when the gusts would hit the boat and try to steer the bow, it made it clear to me just how delicate a balancing act you were performing, made me imagine and appreciate how difficult that task must be and try to put myself in your shoes.
I always worry about motoring too fast and over running the anchor in that situation. Definitely takes a lot of concentrating when it’s not resetting. Glad you finally set… geez you dragging again with more wind …you are stressing me out!!! Great episode guys…n the edge of my seat watching…
Perfect closing remark…you guys are one of my most favorite channels…so real…and so talented…
It’s always the best sleep after a day like that. At least the worst came in daylight. Never seems to be the case for us.
Great job and great episode as always!
real slice of life vibe. love you guys. good job all the way around, crew
