I remember as recently as 5 years ago I thought a 30 dollar knife was expensive and had no clue why someone would pay hundreds for a knife. Then I got a benchmade from the 90s and I started researching other knife stuff because I didn’t even know what a Benchmade was. Now 300 isn’t necessarily too much for a knife. I now try to help my friends realize what a good knife is even if I have to gift it to them because they can’t see spending the money. I recently got a zt350 serrated on the secondary market for a really good price I then had my buddy pay me half what it cost which is what he would normally spend on a pocket knife and told him to use it like it was the $30 smith and Wesson he was looking at and not to worry about what it actually cost

The Bushmaster from Budk was often offered at $5 and is a very decent 1095 Sodbuster. Jodie (Big Red EDC) used to give them away (he sent me one) as his ‘channel knife’. I collect Sodbusters and can attest that is a very a very capable example of the patten, every bit as good, or better than a $35 Case.

I find of all the knives I own it’s the cheaper ( $35 ) SRM ( D2) knife that I carry the most. It’s lightweight with very secure grip and deep pocket clip. It holds an edge well enough. I changed the edge to 15° and that’s sharp enough for any use I need.

When I was in the military I bought a Gerber Gator in a PX.
I don't know where I put it, but inexplicably my brother now has one exactly like it.
A couple of months ago, I was looking to replace it, and tumbled into this rabbit hole of folding knives. I thought Gerber was the be all and end all of folding knives. I now have a new folding knife, but not a Gerber. I decided to go with a Chris Reeve Large Sebenza 31 with black micarta inlays. I also purchased a 7" Chris Reeve Green Beret in Flat Dark Earth, and am looking at a Chris Reeve Mnandi with a Damascus blade as a gentleman's knife. And I think I'll be done with purchasing knives after that, having an EDC, a fixed blade, and a gentleman's knife. Not really looking to get into knife collecting, just wanted a couple of knives that can fulfill my need for different jobs.

I think the reason why so many of us are tempted to be dismissive or even derisive toward "mall ninjas" is because we don't want to admit that, when we were 13, we *absolutely* were mall ninjas. I would have wanted both of the mall ninja knives in this video when I was that age. I still have the absolute trash "Rambo" survival knife I got at the county fair when I was about that age. If you think blade play is a bad thing on a folder, it's so much worse on a fixed blade!
So... much like the old saying "we hate most in others what we hate about ourselves" it can be tempting to mock in others what are most embarrassed about ourselves. And I commend you for not falling into that trap.

One of my coworkers carries straight junk gas station knives for work lol. He said he's never spent more than 20 on a knife. When I showed him my first microtech ultratech he was in awe and was like "Wow that's really nice and cool" I said "Yeah it is. How much do you think it costs?" He said "Idk it looks pretty expensive maybe like $70?" I just looked at him and laughed 😂😂. He was shook when I told him it was 300. I had to explain to him in detail why it cost so much. He thought 70 for knife was expensive lol.

My fiance has a 5yr old little boy. He & I watched his first zombie movie together around Halloween. The zombie movie was a little scary for him , from that moment on zombie defense was a top priority. When Christmas came around the little guy got me a Zombie hunter kukuri knife & a Zombie hunter sword (both are bright lime green & black just like the pocket knife in this video) . He told me that my guns were too loud & the noise would attract more zombies but with the zombie hunter sword I could kill all the zombies quietly & we would all be safe🤣👍

I wanted to slit my throat with it after the first day... went to Bass Pro Shop and got a Kershaw Oso Sweet on the 4th day. The S&W went directly in the trash. As long as it’s solid enough to do what you need, plus a little more, it’s fine. I carry a small seb but I consider a basic frn/vg10 spyderco to be a great knife! It’s better than what most carry.. hell even Kershaw, who I personally dislike is totally acceptable. I Carried a sanrenmu 7010 for years and loved it. I promote the thing all the time.
Bad would be your clunky, generally poorly made affairs from smith&Wesson, ozark trail, ect.
Worse would be the crap you find at the flea market, gas station, dollar stores, ect..
But ultimately price has nothing to do with it, as proven by my sanrenmu.. that thing is excellent for the $7 I paid and I could probably carry it for another decade or two. I carry the crk because it really is just the knife I consider perfect for me.. ontop of that, I also just like small, finely made things.. especially things meant to be used and carried daily. I also love watching things get worn in over time and the seb is great at that. It also caught my eye In a way that no other knife has.. the ZT 0450 came close, but it had a handful of little things that kept me from wanting to carry it all the time.

I’m new to the knife world and I wouldn’t buy anything until I did some research I have learned quite a bit from your videos so thank you. However the more you like knives the more you want the better stuff. And that will cost some decent money. I do believe you do get what you paid for but I have come to realize that for around $70 Canadian dollars not American dollars you can get a knife that is decent and will work for the most part well. But if you want the better blade steel the better handles the better way the knife comes out and closes these are all things that can cost a lot more money. Benchmade for example they really don’t sell anything under $150 Canadian dollars and that’s fine but not everyone wants to spend that money let alone more then that. Anyway I babble on for what I have learned an Ontario rat 2 looks like a good decent knife for around $50 so I think that knife would definitely be a good buy.

  • @pateralus9
    @pateralus9 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I've had friends who were really into mall ninja stuff, but interestingly I never really was.
Where I started was with knives from companies like Frost Cutlery & United Cutlery (I entered my teens in the early-mid 90s). At the time, that's what I thought high-end knives were.
I find that interesting because a lot of the designs I was into really mirrored what many people consider great knife designs nowadays. I didn't gravitate towards crazy designs, I went toward more streamlined designs that are popular now. I just didn't realize that better materials were available, often at not much higher prices than what I was paying for the lower-end blades I was buying.
Kershaw is hands-down the company that got my attention in terms of better quality. My first "real" knife was a Kershaw Leek 1660BIV that I still have, & I didn't buy that until about age 21. At the time I didn't even know ZT existed. I still have never owned a ZT, because I honestly STILL didn't know they existed until just a few years ago. I would've bought one by now if I didn't run so fast torward Microtech & Spyderco, then eventually Benchmade, & most recently Hogue.
So my knife collecting has really ramped up only in the last 6 months or so, even though I've been a "knife guy" since I was about 12.
I'm delighted that I've found the world of higher-end gear, but I'm so glad there still exists great EDC knives in the truly budget range. You can now buy a great user knife for around $25 & that, as Mr. Shabazz says, is a beautiful thing.
There are still a couple popular brands I haven't yet experienced, most notably (to me) Zero Tolerance & ProTech (although I WILL own a Malibu as soon as I can get one!).
Anyway, after all this rambling, to me a "good" knife is one that, again as Nick says, brings me joy & does what it's supposed to do. There's a saying among bourbon drinkers that the best bourbon is the one you like, & the best way to drink it is the way you like to drink it. I think the same is true with knives. If you're a mall ninja, go be a mall ninja & be proud! If the RAT 2 gives you goosebumps, awesome! And if it makes you happy having all the best materials on a custom one-off, more power to you.
There are factors that can make a knife objectively better than another in measurable ways, such as one steel holding an edge better than another or one lock being stronger than another, etc. But in the end it's all about what you like. 😃

May I ask you for a advice about affordable EDC? I need basically a pocket kitchen knife, which is compact, lightweight, cuts well and has a decent blade length (to slice bread etc). So, I think it is like effective blade length in 3-4 inch range. Grippy non-metal ("warm") handle and ease of cleaning/maintaining would be great too. I browsed through your favourite budget knives list. Still Will, Ontario and Bestech knives looked like a good deal. Still, I want to know your opinion if these are good for the task or there are better options.

@@RubleInnawoods thanks. Since I posted my comment here I handled quite a share of knives and can say that RAT 1 is a very nice choice. My current folder though is not an Ontario rat. It occured to me that I need more tools for everyday tasks and occasionally a longer blade. So my main EDC is SOG Powerlitre multitool for 90% of needs and Bestech Ascot as a big blade solution for rare occurrences.
SOG is an exact match for tasks I need it to do. Bestech does feel overbuilt (blade is thick relative to its width, it is can sometimes be noticeable during food preparation) but the handle/ergo is pure win for me and other folders will have a very hard time trying to replace it on my pocket.

Come on, lay on the knife jargon! You show an Opinel and do not use the magic words "Super Slicey"?!!! Everyone needs a cheese/fromage/paring knife for the cooking work.

I'll take that dragon art knife. I still love looking at them. For me benchmade axis locks are a bad knife. It's just how I feel. Oh and my fave art knife is the WE bronzed dragon scale tanto blade.

Fortunately growing up in the south there was this thing called a flea market, and I had a grandfather who worked as an electrician for a living and carried and used what were good knives at the time. What a kid has to learn is the fact that paint, bright colors and movies and fantasies "don't cut stuff". Decent sharp well made and heat treated steel does. Then you get older and you think you know what you've been doing and along come guys like Shabazz who tell you that you still suck, because its not a Grimsmo Norseman.😂😂It never ends.

I’m tempted to buy a Chavez ultramar that I found for 200 bucks. It’s in a really ugly configuration and since it’s such a good price I think I’m going to get it modded. Anyone know who I can get it modded by? Anyone have any good mod ideas. I got 150 dollars for mods
