Bought a Chris Reeve Damascus blade" one off "in 95 , before he ever got a CNC , back then he put a different design on each handle he made no two we're the same. Showed it to him at the blade show in 2012 he remembered making it told me about that certain batch of Devin Thomas Damascus ,tightened the lanyard he personally tied on it when it was made and smiled when he handed it back to me. Knives are memories sometime, hell alot of times. If you think of them as cutting tools only that's fine, but to me they are a hundred memories. This reviewer here reminds me of the beginning.
I’m 78 and learned that my grand kids don’t want a guitar that was never played , a car that stayed in the garage or guns and knives that stayed in a safe. I’ve spent my life using and enjoying all if my passions. I learned this as a midshipman from a man who would become my flying mentor and father in law
Great subject. I'm at the point where 150 bucks is about the upper limit i can pay for a knife. I still like all knives, just have to limit myself to knives under that. There are a ton of good knives under 150 bucks.

I used to say $400 was ridiculous for a knife until I added the cost of my collection and realized I had already spent over that on them, now I just save my money longer between purchases and buy higher end knives.

I tend to stay to budget knives and dig for gems; expensive knives are too easy to find great for my taste. I prefer a great challenge and dig for unfound gems.

Really a good option, if you can be happy with a high end production, get a ZT or Benchmade, these knives can be very aesthetically pleasing and utilitarian, and you can have no fear of using them; if you wear the blades out or break them, these companies will do everything they can to fix them and will replace the blades for around $30.
Spyderco is a good choice as well.

The most I spent on a knife was $1600 for a full custom. I loved how it felt in hand but couldnt beat the shit out of that knife. Had to sell it and stick with production or high end production knives. 90% of my knives range from $80 -$260 with premium steel. My 2 expensive knives cost $450-$500. Its a lot easier to sell production knives compared to preowned custom knives. I learned my 9 years of being a knife user, enthusiast and collector.

i can relate to so much your‘re saying. i‘ve been actively collecting for about 4.5 years and i‘m at about 170 knives that i‘ve specially selected and they all bring me joy for what they individually are... there‘s barely anything i‘d be willing to sell since i‘ve chosen every single one specifically... but hey, as long as my bills are paid, fridge and fuel tank are full i am happy to scratch my itches ;)

Great video and great topic.....you always hit the pulse of the community it seems...I havent got to the point of spending over 100 bucks for a knife, although, I have 2 Benchmades I bought from Amazon for 4 bucks each on a major flaw on advertised pricing...they quickly fixed it but honored my two knives I bought....but I have about a dozen sub 100 dollar Titanium knives retailing for about 80-90 bucks...In my mind, keeping my budget for below 100 dollar knives, gives me more knives, some better value than more expensive knives...but I am tempted to pull the trigger on a Sebenza some day....If they cost over 100 bucks, I fear damaging them so I wouldnt carry them...but the Sebenza is made to work, so it would be in my pocket constantly....Ive also been looking at Cold Steel AD10 just because it looks like a hefty working knife.....keep up the great content...loving your channel!

Totally relate to what you're talking about. It all started about four years ago with a Rat 1 in aus8. Now I've bought a sebenza, umnumzaan, xm-18, wayfarer, Jack, and other higher priced production knives. The way I've found to control over spending is when I get that itch, (which never leaves), I'll buy an inexpensive knife, $30-$50, until I can afford an expensive one. The worst, like this past month, is when I have knives on pre/back order and more than one comes in at once. My Jack and Shaman cf did that this month. I bought other knives as well, not knowing those two were going to hit my credit card together. Killer.
MC, Totally agree about the Hogue Ritter being priced at the best price for function and price. Good explanation of function, utility, and price. I don't own one, but have a BM mini-griptillian which after I put a flat grind on it makes it a wicked cutter. If I had unlimited dollars I would buy the Hogue Ritter, but I have limited funds to play for my addiction. I've reached the stage of appreciating the finer aspects of working knives of various types. I like the PM 2with S35vVN, but dang those hot spots when I try to cut a 1/2" tree branch. Takes the fun out of using the knife. I love the action on the PM 2.I love my BM emissary, but can't carry it daily because NYS law limits it's use to hunting and fishing when in public. So the more you learn and use the more you tend to demand. Went through the same process in woodcarving gouges. I tried several cheaper palm gouges about 20 years ago and was very disappointed. So at this point I could use two types of knives. A working tactical folder such as the Microtech Socom Elite and an inexpensive Ontario Rat 1 in D2. However, I know I won't be completely satisfied because there's always another knife that just might ease that itch.
I agree. Dont`t waste money, just go for the knives that really trigger you. All the 50$ knives stack up to the point where you could have bought one real soid piece. And the solid one sticks to your mind way more intense. Save some, buy some. If you can afford it buy what ever you want.
great topic for discussion mate. My 'itch' is for high end Chinese M390 ti frame lock flippers, Reate and WE for the most part. Thankfully there are plenty of models coming out at the moment. I particularly like Reate, they are IMHO close to the pinnacle of production knives and you get close to perfection in fit and finish, action and execution, but you pay for it.
So spot on , that’s why I love your channel . I’m hunting for a 3.3 shamwari right now , can’t find one. The hunt is also a thrill , which kicks in my OCD for that object. To be totally honest I barely use a knife through out the day. I could get by with a cheap slipjoint to carry but I love knives and the second kind cool you talk about keeps me buying. I think that most of us don't use a knife daily, and our sentiment pretty much echoes yours.
For me it’s never a question of should I buy a $200, $300, $400, or $500 knife! It’s a matter of I just can’t! Even $100 is a lot for me to spend on a knife, I mean I only own 2 knives that are $108 and $235 respectively and I only got them because the money was a gift! Living on a fixed income has allowed me to have a a knife collection primarily in the $50-$80! I don’t think knives should cost several hundred dollars, when there are companies that sell premium material knives that are sub $100! Just my two cents and I appreciate the video and the discussion! 👍🏻
As far as addictions go knives are pretty benign, especially when talking about working knives.
But of course it is ALL up to our own individual tastes, circumstances, and resultant individual behaviors.
FYI $500.00 in the modern wrist watch game is nothing, you can get maybe one plain jane mechanical watch for it. You could get around FIVE good, modern design and production user knives for the same amount of money, ( or to be fair one-ish Glock).

I've never realized until this video that I'm a fidget knife guy. The ones I cannot fidget with I'm still taking special time to take them out on a regular basis to enjoy them and put cutting board oil on them. I've always collected different things in life, and I suppose knifes are end result of my need to be a collector. I think it's because I've always seen them as tools and I've always had at least one that I use and abuse to it's end. My new goal is to obtain a Medford Praetorian T, mainly due to this channel.
Would it be crazy to say I think I did “gain utility” from spending more money on a Ryo Rockstead knife? Compared to my Spyderco Paramilitary it cuts better, it takes sharper edge, it stays sharper longer (I have had it for 8 months and used it exclusively as my EDC and all I do is strop it every once in a while and it stays shaving sharp), and the handle feels better because of the hidden clip. Now of course there are diminishing returns but technically those are pretty high gains on the utilitarian scale aren’t they? The catch is that it costs ten times as much. It isn’t ten times as sharp and the handle isn’t ten times as good. However, it might stay sharp for tens times as long. Diminishing returns? Yes. But it does deliver “utility” returns.
Whenever I’m buying a new knife I always think what can this new knife do that my $110 mini griptilian cannot.
One day you would say to yourself.....nah...no fricking way would I drop $400+ on that......
But, a journey of a hundred miles begins, and is made up of a single step.....
And so another day, sometime in the future, you find yourself hunting down knife after knife at twice that number.....well, maybe around $600😁......I’m not Scrooge McDuck!
And for MYSELF, it’s not the price paid that bestows value on a single knife....it’s how I feel about a particular model that leads me to consider just how much, how far, I would go to own one...I don’t regret the money I’ve spent in my collection because of the joy it brings me and the pride of ownership...in all honesty
I would say I'm a lot like you and you worded it very well.
It can be an investment as well i have high end blades i basically use as pocket jewelry and fidget with them but not cut anything and it keeps the re sale value and sometimes the blade actually goes up in price but I get lots of joy carrying them fidgeting with them every so often certain ones ill cut an envelope open and i then use my 150$ blades like the pm2 and manix 2xl for the actual cutting i really keep them in pristine condition i strop them i have an edge pro apex and i work in a factory as an electrician in the trades but I still collect and appreciate the higher end blades a lot and im hoping that a 500$ reate or Hinderer will be my grail knife thete is a lot of 150 to 220$ knife i reslly want in that price range around the 200 mark the door open more
Oh ya! I always try and scratch as far as my budget will allow me to do so you you are 100% correct about there always being another oneright around the corner. As a newer enthusiast I started buying in the $30-$50 price range and was perfectly content in doing so and as I learned more , listened more and experimented more my needs to scratch that itch even after telling myself I would never grow tired of what ever price range I was buying in magically went up in smoke and I would suddenly be buying knives in the $75-$100 range and would then go through the same process until where I presently find myself, in the $150-$200 price range. Lol. You are spot on in regards to the rewarding factor (serotonin) always pushing you to the next step and I couldn't agree more with your comments today so for that Brother I thank you, you obviously put a lot of thought into this video and this might be the best video I have seen in awhile that relates to my buying history/needs. I have always just used Spyderco, Benchmade, etc. I got a ZT a few years ago and that kinda opened my eyes to the more expensive stuff. I got a Sebenza last year and I’ve been wanting a Hinderer X18 but my next big knife purchase will have to be a Mick Strider SNG. I really really want one but I just have an issue paying what they are going for now. MSRP of $425-450 but the ones I see are selling for $600-1000. Now I also collect watches and went through a similar progression. I had an Omega from the time I was 14 until college. I got my first Rolex at 20. Now I have quite a few nice watches and after years of collecting I saved for a few years and spent almost $30k on a watch. I don’t have an issue with that because I know I can get every cent and more I paid for that watch back if I needed to sell. I guess I just need to get ok with the prices then I’ll make a bigger purchase.

We definitely don't start off with a 200$ blade that's for sure i started with a 20$ Gerber and im at the Zt 0452cf and im getting ready to purchase a Reate Jack 1 and we will see where I go from there

If you have a good bit you could get a table at a gun & knife show. I saw a 75 year old man sell his case collection at a show. He seemed happy with the results.
I enjoy my $200 to $300 knives the most. Over $300 and I won't carry it use it. I'm middle to lower class and just can't afford customs. I own 2 customs but really have no business with them. To be honest I enjoy owning the 2 that I do and if I could afford to have several I would carry them. The quality is definitely there. I carry a knife that cost $250 because I feel I can afford it. Hell I watch your channel just to look at knives I can't afford.
If I didn't buy some many decent production knives, I would have many more high end blades. For me $200-$300 is usually where I live. Above that I'm somewhat hesitant, because the few that I bought didn't blow me away....YMMV

After putting my plain jane large 31 to the test for over a year now, I honestly don't feel as scared to EDC a 500$ knife anymore. Pushing the envelope now. Got a praetorian genesis T on the way that I will probably turn into my new carry. Not sure what I will do with the large 31. It's an incredible knife but I am sick of it and ready for something new.
ive been doing the knife thing since 2010 so i am starting to get a sweet collection so when i get a certain knife and the rush wears off i can simply go through my library(thats what i call my collection)lol and choose ones weekly or daily to watch tv and fidget and threaten bad guys that are on tv
I only have ONE knife that cost between $200-250, $240 to be exact, and that is the absolute limit as to what I’ll spend, and that’s not just because I live on a fixed income! I appreciate all EDC knives, but I dont think that an edc knife should cost $400+ especially not one that is to be used every day! As you said, if you can afford it, buy it, I have nothing against those that can do that, more power to you!

Metal Complex no question paths can change! My fixed income won’t ever change because it’s a social security check that I receive as I was born disabled! That $240 knife that I own, the Stedemon ZKC C-01 in blue Digicamo I purchased with a monetary gift I received for Christmas! All that being said, I applaud those that can spend money for expensive knives!
It's your money, buy what you want. But if you intend to use your knife, don't spend a bunch of money on something you don't want to be damaged or lost. A knife is a tool. If, on the other hand, if you just want a safe queen made of unobtanium that you are going to take out to look at on occasion, and get your panties wet talking about it's "action," go nuts. If you are using a knife as a tool, as intended, there's not a reason in the world to spend over one hundred dollars on a knife, and I don't care how many youtube knife channel homers tell you "this $500 dollar knife has to be in your collection." It doesn't. The truth is, you can put the same edge on almost any knife, the difference is how long the edge will last, and how long it will take you to get the edge back when you lose it.
I've got $1500 users and $800 safe queens. I've also got $3000 safe queen and $250 users. I pick and choose what I want to use and what I want to keep unused because I spent my own money on these things. I've never lost a knife. It's a pretty easy thing not to lose. Don't ever let some random dude in the comments section tell you what to spend your money on, and how to enjoy it. Buy what you want for whatever reason you want. It's your money, not his.
@@metal_complex Not hard to lose a knife, a lot of people don't work jobs where they have the luxury of working at a bench, they have to work in the field. I've lost knives on field problems in the Army, I've lost knives landscaping, I've lost in gravel pits and attics. That's what happens in the real world.
But at least we agree it's your money, and if you have the money to blow on safe queens, then by God you blow that money. Have a nice day!
You're making a lot of assumptions. I worked for my dad's construction company for nearly 2 decades. Again, never lost a knife. And ya, you're right. It is my money. It'll continue to be spent how I see fit.

I go for more high value oriented knives. I want to get the most I can at a specific price point. I have been thinking about getting a nice gentleman's carry for special occasions, but other than that I don't feel the need. LOVE my Hogue Ritter btw!
My goal is to buy the few grails that I want. Then to stop collecting. A mirror polished Koenig Arius with red carbon fiber is one of my grail knives. It sucks that their availability is so poor.
I bought the zt 0562 Cf for me I Won't go that hight again that's just something I wanted done and over kinda thing I like most of the knives in the $200 and under range
You are the cause of me spending $850 in the last month on a Hinderer xm18 non flipper and 1 with a flipper both3.5” But I absolutely love them and the wife actually purchased the first one as a gift but the second one I had to sell a couple knives to purchase and I cannot be happier with both thank you
The most exotic knife I’ve ever bought is a $350 custom Benchmade Crooked River. I love this thing.
Only started collecting knives 4 months ago and now have 30, just got a ZT 562 CF/Ti yesterday what really sucks is have 92 knives in my wishlist on Blade HQ and most are 180 plus.
You need to find away to slow down. I was the same way and I would go to a gun and knife show and I had to buy something. You will enjoy it more if you slow down. It's hard but try to relax.
For me I always think “if for some reason I lost this knife today, am I comfortable immediately going on bladehq or wherever to purchase another one?” You don’t want to always be worried about something happening to it because then it won’t be fun to use and carry. That being said, one day I hope to get an Xm-18. The Benchmade anthem is also on my top list. If you know a knife nut get them a bladehq gift card so they HAVE to buy a knife. Then they won’t feel guilty buying something expensive.

I have a limit of $200.00 that I'm willing to spend ( with 4 exceptions ) on pocket knives because if I plan on buying a pocket knife its gunna get used and more than likely abused. Are there pocket knives out there like the Hinderer XM-18 warncliff that I would like to have yes am I ever going to be able to afford it probably not so I just accept it and move on. This is also why I dont have very many pocket knives and if I do buy a new knife it pretty much stays in my pocket for years or until I can justify another grail knife and there are only 4 grail knives that I want.
I’ve had benchmades tactile spydercos and a Medford sold them all and just kept my small sebenza 21 insingo kept my large sebenza 31 and my strider SMF and I’m that’s all I need 😎
I buy and restore used knives purchased from eBay. I will provide a concept about buying more expensive knives.
My mentor was airborne. His standard for buying equipment is/was simple. If an item comes on the market that is 10% better, then he buys it. If the product isn't 10% better, he passes on it. The visual aesthetics are irrelevant.
So, the question is how would you know if a product is 10% better? Spyderco has two levels of product line. So, in the last few months, I bought two used items of the upper product line - the Police and the Delica. I could not find used, so I purchased new Resilience (vs. Police) and Byrd Cara Cara (vs. Delica).
Given my skill level and potential applications, the lower end Byrd Cara Cara was as good as the Delica. However, given the difference in the lockup system, the upper product line Police was superior to the Resilience. The Resilience ended up being too bulky.
I purchase and restore SAKs and Leathman tools. Which is better? I learned that the SAK blades just wear away with a simple sharpening. However, the SAK that I recommend, the Huntsman (scissors and wood saw) is substantially more compact and less obtrusive. If you are not going to be concerned with hard usage and want even more tools, the SAK route is the way to go. If hard usage is intended, you go with the Leatherman.
Are the better and harder steels worth the price? Ernie Emerson makes knives with hard steels. People who just don't know how to sharpen a knife complain that the steels are too hard to sharpen. I own multiples of his knives because they are extremely hard use tools. I trained with his knives. If I were not concerned with one of the knives being confiscated, losing it, and I had to choose only one folder knife with absolutely no opportunity for resupply and I was by myself, yes.

I'd say you have a serious problem. Loosing money every time you sell a knife just sounds like a bad decision. If you can afford it and it makes you happy, by all means, buy it. If, on the other hand, its just sort of OK, but you buy it knowing you are going to sell it (and lose money) that's just bad decision making. I have bought lots of knives (and watches). In the case of watches I still own about 98% of all those I've ever bought. I liked them when I bought them, and still like them (even though most reside in a sealed case). The added bonus is, I bought them thoughtfully, when someone ELSE needed money and I could buy it cheap. In 20 years I've seen my collection go up in value about 10x. I figure on doing the same with most of my knives.
Well its differenot now that I have the channel. People offer up things for review so I can check it out without having to pqy for it. I dont usually sell anything now unless I can get back what's in it. I just used to do it. All hobbies cost money in one way shape or form.

Yes! Definitely using my “sleeper” method and overthinking method to try to decide. Urges are strong here. It’s such a beauty and the finish I want. But I just bought so much I have to try to lay low ... but that doesn’t mean I won’t ask you about it in a few if not sooner!! 😂. I want that knife. That’s a knife.

The point about opening a gate way to more expensive knives is absolutely true! I've had gas station knives in my teens and 20's and loved them...I just didn't know about the upper tier's or brands for that matter. In my 30's I started with the spydercos and benchmades.. Now... Divorce... Hinderers... Can't afford.... Child support... Microtech?!?
why not if doing something gives you that tickly tingly feeling like when you were a kid and hiding under the kitchen table or some were that you could observe a adult and they didnt know that you were there giggling then do it most of life is ;well adulting is hard so if something other than drugs or alcohol gives you those little rushes then go for its a fun hobby and odly enough each and every knife i have i have a memory attached to it like this one reminds me of this person or this one reminds me of a place or what ever. my problem is i like the higher end stuff so i basically dont do guns or guitars or motorcycles anymore but some day very soon i want or at least wish i could hobby them all

Ah, one more thing, you may wonder what's this guy talking about? 150-170 dls is not a lot.., but I live in Mexico and besides the cost of the knife I have to pay for shipping, handling and taxes that in most cases double the cost of the item. In this case I'm paying around 250 dollars give or take a few.. It's an expensie addiction that's what it is but I love it (likewise happens with any addiction, you just learn to love living on the edge -literally-...)

I would NEVER use my Boker Oberland Arms EDW (300$) for things/tasks where i use my 20$ GANZO 745... And the Ganzo is still doing fine.
Why ? If something happens to it, i can easy buy another Ganzo, but not another Boker...

Easy answer you shouldn’t buy anything expensive if you can’t afford it. Feed your kids pay your bills then go from there. If you have the money and you want to then go for it. There is definitely a difference from a 20 dollar knife to a 200 dollar knife.

Dude, it's a sickness, a fever... If you catch it you could be in trouble, that is, if your means can't cover your desires... I was on that tract... bought the 0652 and was eyeballing the more expensive knives... Then I found the Ganzo/Firebird's... I was saved... I keep looking and watching but I always come back to the Ganzo/Firebird to scratch that itch... I'm not saying that I don't appreciate all of the beautiful knives out there, I just don't buy them... You should buy an expensive knife! Just not one with the cheapest, easiest and most unsafe lock. IE frame/liner lock. I don't know why the knife community accepts manufacturers being lazy and charging $500 for knives with a frame lock.... and yes, I know all about materials and tolerances.. been collecting a long time and have 30+ folders . IMHO frame / liner locks should only be on knives below $100.
