Not sure if it's meant to come across this way, but man does the pilot seem incompetent. Failure to recognise the serious issue they were in and decides to stay in the air to dump fuel in a holding pattern? Insane.
Yeah, absolutely baffling. I just couldn't believe that's what seriously happened. I know nothing about being a pilot, but just common sense told me that was absolutely catastrophically stupid
The $2 hr. maintenance person in Peru got jailed because of systems and procedures that were wrong to begin with. They should have had a bright orange cover with a flag hanging down.
About a year after this incident my parents were on a cross Canada flight. There was a strong smell of smoke in the passenger cabin about an hour after takeoff. The crew made an announcement they were diverting and landing immediately. Within 15 minutes the plane landed safely in Calgary. I'm sure the Swissair fire was fresh on the minds of the pilots and ATC.
Those two guys were reluctant to descend in the first place. When the ATC cleared them to descend to 3000ft they simply replied: negative. The cabin isn’t ready for landing/fuel dump hasn’t done. What a moron! I totally blame this accident on the flight crew. Their lack of situational awareness and quick decision skills sealed the fate of everyone on board.
I truly understand. I chickened out on flying and took a 16 hour train to Florida from south Carolina full of stank loud people and a dude who wanted me to date him. I wish I would have flown instead. Lol. And yes, you are most likely to die in a car crash my friend. But I do understand.
The “flying blind” episode is really terrifying, I don’t know about you, but if everything fails, I would resort to using a glass of water to get an idea of what my planes attitude was and use a tube of mercury to get an idea of what my altitude would be, is it primitive? Yes. Will it work when nothing else works? Yes.
the only movement from water you will get, is turbulence & flying inverted i believe.. that could be wrong too, look it up tho, it’s actually crazy.. a lot of people have tried using a half full snow globe of water & it just does not work.. kinda blows my mind the more i think about it
A simple air pressure alarm could help prevent this accident, e.g., air pressure induced into 'pito' system would set off alarm in cockpit if pressure was blocked from escaping before take off and be part the checklist.
Several things I don’t understand your entire cockpit is to the point you need your oxygen mask and you don’t declare a emergency nor do you start early wanting to land immediately and start preparing to in that 30 min window you were given than you fly out towards the ocean already having this problem to dump fuel. You should have just landed. I’m sorry but this was a instructor and a experienced pilot. I’m not saying he couldn’t fly well but common sense and logically thinking in a emergency situation there was no logic on the captains part. They still might have made it but he had 30 mins to arrive at the airport 20 mins later he’s over the ocean dumping fuel. No the air controller did everything right he himself was concerned the pilot was to high and by his wording more less why wasn’t he descending to be able to land. Bless all those souls and there family’s so sad.
They should make pitot covers that can remove themselves. Like paper covers that can fly off at high speeds, or automatic covers that can be controlled by the cockpit.
For all the experts saying that he should have continued directly towards the airport. It didn't matter since they would have crashed before reaching the airport anyway.
@@Theegoaatno, they might not. You can look it up, flight was doomed the moment it took off. Those pilots did exactly how and what they were trained to do.
I'm not an airplane pilot, I'm a fishing boat captain out of San Diego. But even halfway through this event, I was already calling this captain a moron. Here's why. First, "Where there's smoke, there's fire," and when you're in an enclosed vessel, be it airborne or waterborne, any sign of smoke is considered an EMERGENCY SITUATION. We have a saying on ships, and it goes like this: "A FIRE AT SEA CAN RUIN YOUR ENTIRE DAY." We take that statement seriously. This so-called "professional" captain should have put this airplane on the ground ASAP, but instead he flew around like a student pilot enjoying the view. This was an accident just waiting to happen, but could have so easily been avoided. He had plenty of time to land before things went critical.
@@tiffsaver Yes, you said it better than I just did! D'oh! Lol! But yeah, land the darn plane ASAP! I wonder how much quicker they could have landed if they just headed staight for halifax on that 2nd puff of smoke. What if's I know, but this urgency should be built into the procedures. My heart aches for all those people & their unimaginable suffering. I can't believe such an incredible electrical overload ever had the opportunity to occur. An excess of maybe 5 or 10 times the current rating of a cable is required to heat a cable to red heat like that. Where were the fuses? Arcing? Heating & cooling? This was rushed & because of this, hundreds died. So amateur. So tragic. It should never have happened.

In the back of my mind, knowing that the circulating fan towards the rear was pulling the fire towards the back, would it have changed the outcome if the cabin bus remained on?
Definitely. By leaving the cabin bus on, smoke won’t enter the cockpit all at once causing the autopilot and primary flight displays to fail. Unfortunately turning the cabin bus off was one of the checklist items they were performing at that time.
@@RaisedLetter that being said, the reason why captain Sully was a true hero is because he did his job as a CAPTAIN. He wasn’t fixated on the best possible outcome (returning to an airport). Is that one air traffic controller Joey Jeremiah? 😄 I can't imagine being a passenger on these planes and watching the ocean getting closer and closer, knowing you're gonna crash into the ocean, facing imminent death. How horrific!
If such a Situation like here where they dump the fuel and the fire makes them may move out of their Pilotseat or even the cockpit, will then all the fuel completely dumped, if it won't switched off manually?? Thank you
Maybe he was thinking the math would be very not-in-their-favor being too heavy to land correctly/safely. Plus, the obvious fire problem if/when they DO crash; you'd like as little fire risk as possible.
It’s cos towards the end no one in the cockpit was flying the plane. The captain left his seat fighting the fire. The F/O was likely unconscious. The autopilot was disconnected and primary flight displays failed due to the fire. So at the end the plane was left on its own.
I never gave flying a second thought. I 'hopped' from Sandy Eggo to LA, or whereever, with all the trust in the world, never, ever, even considering that any danger or malfunctions, organic or inorganic, might be an issue. I even put my beloved boys, about 7 and 8 years old, on a flight from Boise to Atlanta, without a thought that the [invaluable] Attendants would look after them; the aircraft was sound; and everyone would do their job, and beyond, when needed. The mechanics, electricians, & all whose job was to make the aircraft safe & sound, did their jobs perfectly. The flight crew would b perfect. Of these things I had faith & confidance. Thank God, they all did. My babies flew clear across America, twice, & thanks to so many consciencous people, doing their jobs well, i got my babies back. Thank YOU (plural). All of you.
That Captain told the stewardess to close events she closed the vents in the cockpit but did he not realize if he smelled smoke is something burning and they didn't even try to check it out
It’s quite amazing how many “” mysteries there are considering the fact that these supposedly trained in individuals and the aircraft itself are gone through with a fine tooth comb, and yet these amazing amount of mysteries 😊
I am sickened by the stupidity and foolhardiness of these two pilots. They owed the victims an apology even in their own demise. Pilots' error causing major catastrophe is totally unacceptable! They took things too lightly when dumping fuel should be the start of the process!
1:35:51 I'm sorry, i really feel for the loss of all those people, but Boeing is not in any way responsible for pilots and maintenence crews not doing their jobs right. That kind of frivolous law suit is equivalent to survivors of a shooting suing a firearm manufacturer for some criminal lunatics use of the firearm they made. It's blame shifting, it's unjust, it's objectively wrong, and sadly it seems to get more common every day with people looking for a payday anywhere they can find one.
For lost of height and speed I would suggest the app gaia to be use by pilots at least they will have indication of their height and speed. I have tried many times when I am flying and it does not need data
Bill did his best. Even though he missed a transmission from the captain but that’s no big deal. It’s the pilot of flight 111 failed to recognize the severity of the situation in the first place that let everyone down. So I blame this accident on the flight crew rather than the fire emergency or ATC. Lack of situational awareness and critical decision making sealed the fate for all 229 souls on board.
Building structures, like shopping centers, hospitals... has a long red pipes with smoke sensors that striked by smoke & immediately spray water , that system can't be installed along the aeroplane loom?
My Dad was a check airman on the 777 for United for a long time.. retired now. He used to fly to Delhi, Tel-Aviv, Shanghai, Paris, all over.. He used to say, "If I ever I had an on-board fire while at cruise over the ocean, I'd be making a B-line for the closest piece of land immediately. Also used to joke and say, "When going over the north pole, if there was an engine fire or a dual engine failure, there'd be very I can do".. would be crash landing on Santa's front lawn."
So I understand that experts believe that they would not have been able to make it to Halifax airport no matter what they did differently BUT was there really no other alternative place they could land? A huge field, long roadway, anything on land that could have been better for them? Seemed like such a huge stretch of land between when they noticed smoke and where Halifax airport was.
It is so incompetent of these airlines to not train their maintenence workers on things they should and shouldn't do. They should know the consequences and even what a crash would look like due to that. Sometimes, seeing the destruction and dead bodies covered up, is the only thing that will sink in and never be forgotten again!

Pilots should be tested/checked for any drugs/narcotic meds/alcohol right before each flight. I dated a pilot and many are alcoholics due to such a stressful job.
Absolutely not. Because the fire came from within, a short circuit in the electrical cables from the aircraft’s entertainment system. It would always have destroyed the access to the important flight data and would have always destroyed the controllability of the ✈️…

3:47 --12 cabin crew for 215 passengers? Amazing! What do we have these days? 2 cabin crew with attitudes for 215 passengers... I remember enjoying flying back in the 60s/70s/80s. Now you have to be young and healthy to "barely" survive a plane trip.
If Pan Pan Pan means Mayday then why would an airline call themselves Pan Am? I know this was about Swiss Air but still, I have to wonder. Many condolences to the families of those who lose their lives in these tradgedies. The only salvagable thing about them is that they are always learning what not to do again. However the cost is not worth the lesson.
Pan pan pan is not the same as mayday but some airlines use call signs, such as Pan Am. Pan Am flight 103 for example would be "clipper 103" so it wouldnt really ever be an issue.

@@maggiemuthu9818According to the TSB report, he was alive on impact. He was flying blind due to a failure of the standby instruments, being at night, with smoke and flames. He lost his spatial orientation and accidentally put the plane into a 20 degree descent into the ocean. I truly feel bad for him and try to put myself in that seat to realize how determined he was to get that plane in.
May all the lost souls rest in peace.
They should have declared an emergency a long time before they did. Maintaining a Pan Pan Pan status with a smoke filled flight deck?
This was my thought as well.
Exactly, it makes no sense that any situation where they felt compelled to wear their masks didn’t instantly compell them to be like “hmmmmm, MAYBE we should declare a mayday.”
Absolutely! & in my opinion didn't convey to Everyone of the Controllers just as the one said he didn't think it was a serious problem you can't tell me time wasn't waisted..tragic...

This incident was a reall illustration of trepidation and fretfulness
The $2 hr. maintenance person in Peru got jailed because of systems and procedures that were wrong to begin with. They should have had a bright orange cover with a flag hanging down.
Thanks for sharing this awesome content!
Any aircraft with engines on idle for so long will be decending. amazing these guys didn't realize that.
I watch these to remind myself why I don’t fly planes go down and I don’t plan to be on one when it does 😭terrible man I couldn’t even imagine

I heard the pilot's finally transmission of this flight, it was heartbreaking 😢

How?
I think he’s talking about Swiss Air 330
They should make pitot covers that can remove themselves. Like paper covers that can fly off at high speeds, or automatic covers that can be controlled by the cockpit.
For all the experts saying that he should have continued directly towards the airport. It didn't matter since they would have crashed before reaching the airport anyway.
They might have made it but they were too heavy so yes they most likely would have crashed.
Why?

Still not enough compensation for such horrific deaths.
@@christopherzhao3135 I get it. Basically they sealed their own fate by following the checklist rather than landing immediately.

That this idiot captain took extra time to dump fuel when there is an active fire on the airplane is absolutely incredible!
Maybe he was thinking the math would be very not-in-their-favor being too heavy to land correctly/safely. Plus, the obvious fire problem if/when they DO crash; you'd like as little fire risk as possible.
That is so tough to watch. So very sad. 46:22
It’s cos towards the end no one in the cockpit was flying the plane. The captain left his seat fighting the fire. The F/O was likely unconscious. The autopilot was disconnected and primary flight displays failed due to the fire. So at the end the plane was left on its own.

That Captain told the stewardess to close events she closed the vents in the cockpit but did he not realize if he smelled smoke is something burning and they didn't even try to check it out
Insisting on dumping fuel while there is lots of smoke and fire in the cockpit is absolutely insane, no matter what any checklist says.

He was jailed for his negligence
I am sickened by the stupidity and foolhardiness of these two pilots. They owed the victims an apology even in their own demise. Pilots' error causing major catastrophe is totally unacceptable! They took things too lightly when dumping fuel should be the start of the process!

Bill ATC did all he could and did it correctly
Bill did his best. Even though he missed a transmission from the captain but that’s no big deal. It’s the pilot of flight 111 failed to recognize the severity of the situation in the first place that let everyone down. So I blame this accident on the flight crew rather than the fire emergency or ATC. Lack of situational awareness and critical decision making sealed the fate for all 229 souls on board.
Building structures, like shopping centers, hospitals... has a long red pipes with smoke sensors that striked by smoke & immediately spray water , that system can't be installed along the aeroplane loom?
Water isn't the best bet for many types of fires: grease, electrical...
