I've got a massive tin of tent weather proofer (Fabsil) that I used to use on my convertible car - perfect for shoes, coats, all sorts, and way cheaper than a spray, and better than that ..... can paint or spray on.

No, and I have no plans to do it. My experience with waterproofing is that anything that keeps water out also keeps water in, despite marketing claims otherwise. I want my shoes to breathe. I don't ride in wet conditions unless I get caught out, and I'm pretty careful about watching the weather forecast to avoid that.

Shoes and boots, for cycling or otherwise, I go the other way. I want highly breathable footwear, not fake Goretex marketing, but real honest breathability. When it's wet out, my feet get wet but rely on the breathability to air dry them later.

If you actually want to ride in the rain and keep your feet dry for more than 30 minutes, get rubberized shoe covers. And even then, you might also have to fill the slots where the cleats are fitted with urethane or something, otherwise the water will get in from the bottom.

The new technology of knitted fabrics for cycling shoes is a very interesting one, but I can't help but feel that even with a hydrophobic spray or coating being applied, these fabrics are going to be very difficult to keep clean due to the thousands of holes and openings which will serve to retain dirt and grime. I would think that these fabrics would eventually look dingy and stained, especially if that knitted fabric is white. I'm sure that this wouldn't be a problem for pros, who can just have their shoes replaced when needed, but for mere mortals like myself I think that it's best to stick with a synthetic leather and a smooth finish that can be easily wiped down.

I recently purchase white cycling shoes. Firstly, I placed black electrical tape on the toes to prevent scuff marks from the front tyre/tire. It can be replaced when need be. Then I wipe them down occasionally with a kitchen cream cleaner (Vim) to remove scuff and chain marks. A tooth brush is used with the cleaner on the shoe tongues under the Boa laces to rid of dirt marks. A friend puts her shoes in the washing machine placed in a mesh bag for cleaning.

All this talk about waterproofing made me wonder if you could do a segment about the impact of the banning of PFAS for the cycling industry. I know Castelli and other brands have already produced some new membranes that repel the water leaning more on physical than chemical properties of the materials. It would be fun and useful to learn about that.

Extra cost and time. DWRs work well but they also need to be reaplied and they hurt the breathability of anything you use it on. That said, Lake used to use them on their waterproof shoes but they don't anymore because they have better material that doesn't need it.

These shoes work with the Peloton bike+ (April 2022), th-cam.com/users/postUgkxGPkov2mNjgZfG33r6Bwvies8jKE4AKZB and are of good enough quality. I have completed 10 rides so far and there are no issues. The first time trying to fit them on the Peloton bike took 10 minutes (even with the help of an experienced cyclist friend who wears the same type of cleats). It took a couple of rides to break in. After the first two rides there were no issues at all.

It is 200ml so you won't get many applications out of it and it didn't do what it does in the advert.
