    This is it, everyone. The game so many of us have been anxiously awaiting is getting to our doors. Paul’s Gloomhaven video taught me the system so many years ago and the game solidified my love for hobby board gaming. This Frosthaven video is THE definitive rule explanation: thorough, clear, logical, and well-edited. Stick with it and this game will last you many sessions. The game has been worth the wait, and these videos teaching it are worth your time, I promise. Kudos to Paul’s hard work!

      Thanks. This video is quite different. It's almost 4x as long, but quality wise, much better. I look awful in the old video. I do go into a lot more detail with this video though - it is a full, comprehensive rules video, so was never going to be short. Took me ~20 hours to write and work on the script. I've made some whole videos in that time!

    Very useful viewing so far. It's interesting to see the tweaks/streamlining of some of the rules/icons from Gloomhaven and all of them look to be for the better. Thanks for putting the time into this video, and I'm looking forward to seeing the Outpost tutorial when I've time. I really like the evolution of the looting rules in Frosthaven to include resources for enhancing/crafting items at the outpost.

    We just got Frosthaven for Christmas, just finished setting up the box and am enjoying this option for learning the rules.
    Coming from Jaws over here, and I have to say I really did enjoy the 5 scenario tutorial that let us learn to play as we went.
    Thanks for the video!

    Thank you so much for this video. My brother, a friend and I had a disastrous first session going through Scenario 0. We then all separately watched this video (without actually saying so to one another) and gathered again for another attempt this evening.
    The difference was night and day, all because this video explains the core concepts of a quite complicated game in an easy to follow and understand way. And as a result, we managed to complete Scenario 0 without a hitch. Again, thank you so much!

    Regarding exhaustion - it's important to understand that if all you have is two cards in your discard pile (and none in your hand) your only option is to long rest. This is because when you declare a long rest, you don't do anything until your turn comes around at initiative 99 - then you discard one card and become exhausted. This means you can spend your last turn as an easy target for monsters, soaking up some damage instead of your teammates - assuming you are closest and don't have to fight over being focus.

    • @GamingRulesVideos
      @GamingRulesVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct. Long resting is your only real option at that point.

    First, thanks for the great video, it made learning the rules more digestable. In the manual on page 75, example A (briefly shown on the right side of the screen at 1:07:25 ), the hound lacks movement points to shorten the path which is why instead of going one field to the right it stands still. Now when we project the problem of that example to whats happening at 1:05:48 the monster should only walk towards the player figure when his movement is 4 or higher, otherwise stand still. Could someone clear this up for me please? I am about to play my first session and i want to avoid mistakes. Thanks for listening!

    Can you clarify the difference between being able to choose if you want to "Add +1 attack for each of your summons" (27:54) vs "Perform the attacks as if you were occupying a hex with *black dot*" (28:11). These both seems to be in the same style text/placement and both add effects to the attack so I'm not sure how you determine one as optional and one as mandatory? Thanks!

  • @ATinyWaffle
    @ATinyWaffle 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    1:02:26 Is this completely accurate? I thought the enemy prioritizes its attack first first by who is closest by total hexes and then considers initiative order. So in this example it would focus the Banner Spear as if it had unlimited movement so it would go left two hexes with two movement.

    54:26 Does the item icon actually mean “lost” now, just like the ability cards? In Gloomhaven, I thought it meant “consumed” on items, and was not affected by cards recovering “lost” things. It was always confusing to me in Gloomhaven why these two keywords used the same icon despite meaning different things. Certain abilities in Gloomhaven specify recovering only “spent” items or “spent and consumed” items. Has this been standardized to mean “lost” for both ability cards and items in Frosthaven?

    If in the pattern some enemies are not in LOS, will the attack hit them?

    When explaining resting, don't forget that a long rest provides an optional "heal 2, self" that is subject to the same rules as other healing - meaning if you are poisoned, you don't heal 2 points of damage, you simply lose the poison status.

    At 1:08:17, wouldn’t the Algox Priest move in as if to do a melee attack before doing its heal?

      Good spot. Yeah, if they are not attacking, they would move as if they were attacking (if there is move on the card). For the purposes of that example, assume it has already moved. Or was immobilised, or was just lazy :)

    58:25 you sure you can place it in discard? I would think that because that card has the lost icon, you would need to put it there instead. If this is allowed, couldn’t you use the active power for a while then choose to discard it early, then replay it in a future turn getting more uses out of it than normal? …

    • @GamingRulesVideos
      @GamingRulesVideos  ปีที่แล้ว

      The Life in Death card - when played for the Top ability - is not a Lost card. So it can be discarded early. And yes, you could play the card, summon the skeleton, have that on the board for a while, then later, discard the card - the skeleton is removed - and then you can replay it.
      Summons in Gloomhaven were (I think) all Lost cards. Not so in FH.

    In your example at 40:27 what would happen if a character got that result when attacking with disadvantage? Would it matter if, for example, I was making an attack 1 against an enemy with 3 or more shield where either result will inflict no damage after shield is applied but the result with the lower damage total before shield at least applies a curse.

    • @GamingRulesVideos
      @GamingRulesVideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If an attack has a curse effect, you get that, even if the attack does 0 damage.

    • @dukeskunk
      @dukeskunk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GamingRulesVideos I am just meaning which card would be considered "worse" for purposes of disadvantage? The one that does less damage even if that grants a curse? And would it consider final result thus accounting for the fact that the higher damage actually gets you nothing in the example I gave but the lower damage at least applies a curse even though the damage is prevented.

    • @deaeth157
      @deaeth157 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dukeskunk I think you know the answer to this. What is worse doing 0 damage or doing 0 damage but still cursing the target? Take the worse of the two.

    • @dukeskunk
      @dukeskunk ปีที่แล้ว

      @@deaeth157 That depends on whether it is concerned with the outcome of the attack or just the attack itself, +2 would be considered better than +1 & curse.

    • @deaeth157
      @deaeth157 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dukeskunk It seems like you are just trying to bend the rules to make it easier or a better outcome for you which is fine if that's what you want to do.
      I find it easiest to make these types of decisions by turning it around... if you were the monster, would you rather take 0 damage or take 0 damage and receive a curse card? That should tell you which one is the better of the two
      This is a good tool to use in other aspects of the game as well. Such as if a monster can summon something in a particular space where it is more advantageous than if you were to say, summon his tanky pet behind him vs blocking one of the players from attacking him which is technically within the rules but not very fair for gameplay
