I just ordered Frostpunk look forward to getting this tabled as well. It looks epic! great video! im sure ill watch it or at least reference it again.
tbh, I haven't played that many computer games to really compare.. besides, I do not know a lot of boardgames based on computer games at all..? do you? how many have you played and which one is your favourite board game adaptation, is it really Frostpunk? I bet it could be.. I have only started playing the computer version of Frostpunk recently (before I got my hands on the board game), cannot really tell if it's great or not, but I love the setting of course.. :)
The passion that went into this is clear to see and we're proud to have sponsored such an incredible video. Thank you Paul for producing such informative and top-quality content. We are sure that your fans will appreciate it as much as we do! 💜
This is going to make understanding the rule book so much easier. I always wait for a GR! how to play/tutorial for any big or complex games that I purchase.
Thanks again Paul for your diligent tutorial. I played Frostpunk last night and we not only got slaughtered, but we were continuously referring to the rulebook and it took hours. I want to stick with it though.
Soooo...what did we just see here?! Think I must have watched, well..at least + 100 of "How to play"-videos over the years. I like to see 1-2 videos of a game after I´ve read the rules. I like the self-confidence the "teacher" gives, especially with heavier games. And this one here, was the best I´ve ever seen. I never follow an account, just look up the game i need and if it´s a good one, I´ll watch it, but you are on a different level Paul with this one. +1 Sub without a doubt!
Really liked this explanation. I have played this game a few times and got many of the rules wrong or confused so it's nice to be educated! So glad I can use large buildings twice now that I know.
Excellent explanation thank you. Despite having the PC game I was struggling to understand the setup and some of the rules as it's not that clear in places. This was very helpful!
Incredible tutorial. So clear and with great production. Possibly the best game tutorial i've seen yet. Congrats, great work and thanks for sharing. Like the tutorial, the game seems incredible also. Hopefully i can get it next Christmas, let's see. Take care!
I've been looking at this board game since I have been enjoying the PC game since it came out and still plays it regularly. This video convinced me that this is a board game completely in my taste and I have now ordered it together with the Frostlander expansion.
Superb explanation. Thanks Pauline Grogan, erm Paul i mean. I found a mistake i made fueling the generator wrong. I am now confident to play flawlessly.
Thank you for such detailed overview of the rules. I played it once and got most of it, but now I see some mistakes I made interpreting the rules (making it even harder! haha). For me is a very long game, maybe because I try to think too much, so losing feels kind of bitter. However, only one day after I was eager again to play my next campaign. The only thing that really stops me from playing it more often is the amount of space it requires. It covers my entire table xD

Very nice video - clear and concise! "This game is challenging and you might find winning difficult at first, but stick with it and try again". So - have you won yet?
wow, played this game two days ago for the first time (solo!) and was blown away by it.. sadly made two (major?) mistakes: I only put the first law consequence dusk card into my dusk deck, later on forgot to do so for the other three laws I introduced (shame on me!), AND I totally forgot to discard a citizen card from hand or the deck after someone died (which happened 3 or 4 times in my playthrough).. SO, I really don't know if I should count this first play victory or not, but well, I'll do.. and always remember, I did these mistakes.. maybe should have watched your HTP-video here after reading the rulebook (which was my only way to learn this game before my first play)? :P I am watching it now and -as usual- am stunned by the quality of it and the effort you obviously put into it.. two thumbs up - as usual with your HTP-videos! :D
Ok, I will be honest, I never watched past the setup part of the video. Got tired and stopped it. Thank you for another great video Paul, this is just not a game for me!
Best explanation I've seen so far and even after six games there were a couple minor points I picked up while watching. For example, there's a stockpile card for the initial scenario that I had to lookup how to use correctly and has caused some discussion due to others also getting it a bit wrong (can you contribute enough resources to get a full 6 or all 12 with one action?). Another example is the construct action citizen or tech with an upgrade subaction.
This is just perfect! Thank you! I played just once but thanks to this video I have realized, I was playing the generator phase wrong - I have never reset the heat marker to 0 because I thought it is done only when the generator breaks down! Uff, that is brutal :) I have a question regarding expeditions - when you decided to return and put C card like in 51:44 where you will deploy the meeple for a new expedition? On the first place of A card and then contiue via first place of B card to first place of C card or it will start directly on the C card? I haven't found this explained in the rules. Thanks!
Yep. It is a line in the rulebook "reset the heat marker" - but people are missing it :) Expeditions: If you choose to return, the meeple is placed back in your supply. When you go on an expedition again, you go on the first space of the lowest card - representing that the C card is farther away. It should be in the rules (I wrote them too) :) I think it says "on the first space of the first card in the stack" or something like that.
@@GamingRulesVideos Yes, "reset the Heat marker" is bolded but I have missed the "Whether the Generator broke down or not" part as it was directly following the "If there are any Stress cubes in the overflow space, the Generator breaks down." Regarding the expedition, there is a picture depicting this possibility right at the begging of the expedition explanation but I have overlooked it. In the "Expedition Movement" section text starts with "Scouts on Expedition stacks move during the Weather Phase..." well but its hard to know what is a expedition stack as it is explained later on. But I understand it know, thank you very much!
UPDATE: played Frostpunk again over the last two nights (started late the first night, so finished tonight), this time I hopefully played everything correctly.. and, almost won.. 3 beds, that's all I needed in the end.. so close! :( but I made a few mistakes (gameplay wise), like I build too few hunting huts, and I should have upgraded from tents to houses, not bunkhouses (which get destroyed in the second storm..).. this game is super hard, once you play everything the right way.. ouch! but it is so rewarding, I love it.. first playthrough was around 5:15 hours, second 4:30 hours.. I'm getting quicker as well, still taking my time though.. ^^
Many thanks for a really informative tutorial for this brilliant game. I have been playing the game quite a bit in the last 2 weeks and slowly getting better at it. Please can you explain how the building Coal Thumper works as I just can’t get my head around it, so haven’t used it yet but feel I am probably missing out on a really useful building ( as much detail as you can give would be much appreciated). Many thanks in advance.
Never used it myself, but let me check! When you use the building, place up to 3 Coal on each of 3 different adjacent spaces (placing up to 9 Coal in total). Spaces chosen must either already have Coal on them, or have no Resources, Trees, or Buildings. That seems clear - it basically generates coal, puts it on the map, which you can then gather. Does that help?
12:35 Now that's a rule I didn't see before. Maybe I'll try that for my second game. Don't want to backtrack on the multiple steps required for setup to move the meeples. >_< EDIT: Which is odd, because so far it seems like you're otherwise just reading the rules from the book of a teleprompter.
Bear in mind, before creating the video, I already knew how to play the game very well as I wrote the rulebook for the game and had played it a few times. Otherwise, it would have been a lot longer. Total time from sitting down and starting to write the script to making the video live was about 75 hours of work. Partly paid for by the publisher and partly by Patreon supporters.
@@GamingRulesVideos It shows! Now after playing one game, this must be the first game bought via any crowdfunding that we don't have to run back and forth between our kitchen table and PC to look up some clarifications to rules or browse through an endless FAQ. Thank you for clear rules!
So ruined tents can only be removed by a dismantle action and then they are removed from the game completely? Even the ones unbuilt and still on the build board?
btw, not sure if I understood "The Inevitable" card right, does the flipping of the skull side of the sick counter mean, those citizens die, no matter what, or are they "saved from dying".. maybe played that wrong as well, as I did not let them die (only happened once if I remember right..)..
I am just curious. I have the upgraded resources. When I have to throw coal into the generator should I use the upgraded resources or original cubes for this?
Wow, after 2 hours I still don't have this set up. I don't imagine I will ever get to play this as it is just too complicated, plus it just seems unwinnable. Well presented video but beyond my abilities.
@@GamingRulesVideos Thanks! Maan, i spent close to 7hrs on that game today, just constantly referring back to rules and your video, and still messing up constantly. Been using kids meeples for half my game before i realized i couldn't, i forgot about the laws cards completely for the first 4 turns, there's some corpse track thing which sounds important but i was soo overwhelmed with all else that i ignored it cause i just couldn't keep track heh. And all the buildings... I can't for the life of me remember what they all do, gotta keep checking the rules non-stop. Geeeez, why they make it all soooo hard! Can you actually keep track of everything after a while? I'm all for complex games, but I'm just drained with this one... Not giving up yet, gonna try again but... ufff.....
Thanks for the video. I dont have the rulebook on me right now but I thought that if a dusk card calls to add a specific hope or discontent token you would pull that specific token from the bag (i.e. search for it and place it inactive)? But in your example you say that the "+1 care" means you pull a hope token (and hope it is care?) And then check if you have that token and if so, activate it. That seems weird to me. Im not saying you are wrong but is this really how this is intended? Ill check rulebook tomorrow im kind of sure it sais grab the specific token, but you are probably right..?
I’m not sure what to say :) my video is 100% correct and matches exactly what the rulebook says. I’m the one who actually wrote the rulebook :) There is nothing in the rules of the game that allows you to look through the bag and choose a token.
However, I do agree with you that it is a bit confusing. Hence the reason why I explained it in detail here, with another example. Because I think a lot of people are playing it wrong, even though the rulebook is very precise :)
@@GamingRulesVideos Wow. Thank you for a quick answer 😊 55:26 And what about Wall Drill and Coal Mine? If it can be used twice per round, can I send 2 workers there and get 6 wood or 8 coal?
Only in the solo game. The Citizen cards represent talented individuals. They are one-use only. So, in a 4-player game, you have 12 Citizen cards between you to use during the game.
oh my.. the faults I made on my first playthrough become astronomical.. I did use the action on citizen cards in addition to the action of the building I went to.. 🤪 not sure if you will mention it, but can you play children cards to actually use buildings (which you couldn't if you did not have the law for it, or if it wasn't to gather resources or use the gathering outpost).. not sure about that one either..?
haha, you mention that in the next sentence, should not have stopped the video to make this comment then.. ^^ good, at least I got that right.. BUT, I played more than one citizen card within a round.. lol!
@@GamingRulesVideos fair enough mate. Played this back in its very early release it was extremely difficult to get through very glad to have a dedicated teach for it
I am about to play my first game tomorrow and already i am concerned that the dawn and dusk decks gives to much complexity to an already advanced game. That feature was not part of the pc game.
hahahahaha, roflmao! guess how much food I paid each round in my first play..?! only as many as I had meeples of the certain citizen type.. loooooool! ok, I guess this game is really quite unbeatable if you play everything correct.. I do not see myself winning if I add up all the mistakes I made, and this one was -by far- the biggest one I made.. ouch! ^^

And what about Wall Drill and Coal Mine? If it can be used twice per round, can I send 2 workers there and get 6 wood or 8 coal?
@@Vladian100 If there are two worker spaces, then yes, it can be used twice per round.
When do you ever get to draw new citizen cards during the course of the game (after the pre-game set-up)? There doesn't seem to be a way to do so.
BUT, I played more than one citizen card within a round.. lol!
I'm watching your video to help me decide whether to buy this game or not
I hope it helps.
@@GamingRulesVideos I ended up buying everything for it. Thanks
finally!
Can citizens on an expedition get sick as a result of not having a place to sleep?
You do not need to find heated shelters for them at night.
Thank the lord.
No need to thank them. They had nothing to do with this :)
The PC game had the random events that would pop up now and again. These are the same thing.
Wow, that frozen man in the thumbnail has bushy eyebrows. 😂😂
He's been isolating for Covid, so not got access to his trimmer
Classic Pauline grogan
The video game itself is not easy, I’m guessing this is Ben harder in a board game

Lore or Law? xd
hahahahaha, roflmao! guess how much food I paid each round in my first play..?! only as many as I had meeples of the certain citizen type.. loooooool! ok, I guess this game is really quite unbeatable if you play everything correct.. I do not see myself winning if I add up all the mistakes I made, and this one was -by far- the biggest one I made.. ouch! ^^
ok Gus Fring
