There are definitely a lot of fair criticisms you could make about the story but to be honest most of what you said is simply just on you. Keep in mind this is the third game in a trilogy based on a book series spanning across decades. Most (if not all) of what you said is already established information. A lot of it is actually recounted in the in-game books as well.
For the amount of effort you put into your videos, I'm more than happy to re-watch this video! Keep up the great work Jack! Already looking forward to your next one 🙌
CDPR did a great job at making this game. Hands down a masterpiece. Your critique on the main quest line lacking backstory is certainly justified. Didn’t read the books until after this game and all of it fell into place. You learn how ciri first met the “wild hunt” and why they pursue her. You learn ciri’s story of her childhood and her parents and why it’s important. You learn about her lineage and how it’s the backbone to the foundation to the whole franchise. All in all there’s an insane amount of backstory to support the game that would be damn near impossible for CDPR to include. I think it’s the main reason why they decided to make the games outside of the books and write their own story while using the books as reference. It’s probably a near impossible task to have a direct adaptation of the books into another medium hence a contributing factor to the criticism the Netflix show is receiving.
I actually think the game does a fantastic job of letting you in on all that without forcefeeding it through the main quest dialogues. All the main characters know all this stuff, it wouldnt make sense for them to talk about it. But you can find the info in books, in conversation options etc. I learned 90% of the Witcher world from playing the game (to a completionist level, admittedly). And this is such a solid way to do storytelling in a game. Series like Thief and Deus Ex use this exceptionally well to their credit
The reason Dandelion sounds like Vesimir is because it's Dandelion recounting the story when he's much, much older. I mean, he even name drops his own name quite a few times in the cinematics.
The question isn't 'why does he sound old?', it's 'why does he sound like Vesimir?'. It's weird and confusing. He doesn't sound like an older Dandelion.
Not sure if this has been addressed or not but regarding the oils you can actually find in settings to auto apply oils, switch this on and you got yourself the appropriate oil for the appropriate enemy. It's a game changer, quite literally!
I realised it too late. But even after turning it on, I did not get the expected satisfaction. Actually scouting and preparing the oils is much more satisfying than auto applying the oil and getting an invisible damage boost. But "it's free, and I'm grateful 😂"

Gotta be honest here, this is my first time watching a video of yours and this has got to be the best Witcher 3 video I’ve seen. You captured quite literally every single point that made me personally fall in love with this game years ago and fall back in love with it this year. Excellent video man 👏🏼👌🏼 all these years later and still no game has topped it in my eyes

Amazing work, I love how dynamic the filming is, having many locations, specially outdoors but even inside your room, changing angles all the time. Stellar job, instant sub
I love finding random new TH-camrs with twists on regular video essay content. The cosplay/outdoor setting was enough to get me to watch the whole video. You definitely got a new sub outta me bro 👌🏾
I felt heard when you mentioned the game lacking a guide on Witcher combat accessories like bombs and potions. Playing this game a second time and I'm still learning how to use those in battles. Fights play out much differently once you start to incorporate them.
This video crushes the whole notion of short ‘video essay’. I cannot believe how much effort has been put in all the shots and scenes. Like c’mon; a freaking HORSE!? Big ups man
To be fair in regards to the Geralt/Yen dialogue, Geralt being a complete simp for her despite her absolute character flaws is actually Lore accurate lol.

Something I ADORE about the witcher is how you literally are that, A WITCHER. At first you have to WORK to get the money. Some games just give you too much money but in the witcher, you must do contracts and haggle to buy any equipment ingredients and survive higher levels. It feels very much like doing the witcher work without being tedious. Plus Geralt always asking for money but never actually accepting it on poor folk just makes me so happy.
Happy birthday Jack! You have easily become my favorite channel to watch since I first saw your Red Dead Online video. Thank you for the amazing work! Can’t wait to see more.
Thanks for the great vid. And bonus... I never heard of the Zoo Brothers until I Shazammed that little snippet you played of their song. Thanks again for that. :)
My only (big) negative with the Witcher is how limited the combat is. The world and the history is extremely extensive but you run around it with just light attack, heavy attack, and one or two useful spells depending on the enemy. If they went slightly further into combat depth (without any synergy against the monster like spells) it would have made for a more fun experience slaying monsters instead of a hussle to figure out what oils, potions, spells, etc are needed to do any damage. Maybe a jump-slash, slide-swing, or double sword/knife technique would have given it a lot more variety to such an important aspect instead of what gear and level are you for this fight.
This is a well put together video. It actually made me try the Witcher 3 for the first time! You’re on your way to 1 million subscribers based on the quality of videos.
As for the story stuff, everything you questioned is in the books and previous games. And the narrator is Dandelion waaaay in the future, this is a reference to Dandelions book '''Half a Century of Poetry'' which he planned to release after years of tales.
Don’t lose hope brother if this video do not reach ur expectation. You are some of the few creators that I've been following for long time and check out for ur video now and then. You have some xfactors in the content i Don't know what, makes it interesting and different than the others. I wish u would do more video than usual and also wish that ur channel will grow even bigger.
While I am really sad to hear that you lost that 100K views on this video, I hope this video does even better! This video was honestly incredible and well worth the time and effort you put into it
Great video. The Witcher 3 is my favorite game and I will playthrough it for the third time soon. I agree on almost all points, but one thing you forgot that I would like to add is the soundtrack. The soundtrack is nothing short of legendary, it gives so much atmosphere to the game that just hearing it after not playing the game for a year makes me want to play it again. It is such an important cogwheel in what makes the witcher so great.
I’ve been following the age restriction story on your instagram and every time i saw another story about it, i rolled my eyes over and over and over aaaaand over again. I feel for you dude, this video is superb and definitely your best work yet! Don’t let this put you down
Can't imagine how much effort went into the making of this video, especially with all the real-time in-game footage that actually pertains to the issues you're talking about. Perfectly sums up what I feel about the game as well, both the good things and the bad things, plus your own creative and constructive criticism! The highest quality game review video I've seen so far.
I mean to be fair you can't expect the game to explain every character, who they are and what their motivations are, when you jump in at the end of the series.
Hey dude, I love your videos and you're an amazing storyteller tho I think it's criminally unfair you don't own that many subscribers, because you definitely deserve it Please don't stop making videos, big fan Love, A fan from Sao Paulo, Brazil Ps: I am reaaaally high right now on edibles, and on my other screen I am playing Witcher 3, while blasting some Opeth songs at my flat haha
Stay strong Jack, we need you! There's been a lot of creators making similarly in-depth longer format videos about games like you for the last couple of years, and it's amazing. I really like videos by NakeyJakey (yeah, that's not that recent), Racevick and maybe most of all Joseph Anderson (good job at beating him to the release date of the Witcher 3 video btw :P), but quite honestly I enjoy your general vibe, attitude and humor the most. I know it's usually not very cost/revenue effective to upload very long videos, partially because of how YT works (vide upcoming Joseph Anderson's over 10 hours long W3 video), but I would love to see you at least experiment with longer stuff. Maybe split such videos into episodes? In any case, I have the so called bell icon clicked and sure as hell am going to watch every video you upload in the future as soon as I get home after getting the notification, as I really don't see myself watching content with such a high production value on my phone screen. Best wishes, may the algorithm be with you!
Absolutely insane content Jack. Thanks for emphasizing how most people feel about updates and patches, in these types of games. We’re glad it’s been added, but it was kinda unnecessary to add, and better things could have been added.
I’m just getting around to playing this game right now too! I’m blown away this is probably one of the best games I’ve ever played. The immersion is unparalleled. All the NPCs make sense and they aren’t scared of showing violence and the occasional titty. 10/10
Amazingly crafted praise of one of my most loved but probably least played games of all time. There's just one thing: you forgot the most important good bit, the OST! It's so unique, so well fit, so expressive, so coherent over such a wide range of intensity, so powerful, so memorable... It's a masterpiece and don't think I would have been half as immersed in the game without it.
They added an option for Auto Oils in the options menu, also you neglected to mention the new Crows Perch sign post labeled "Castle Town" so you don't have to run around the entire settlement to get to the master armorer
18:32 couldn’t agree more with all these points. The audio pauses and bulky movements made me stop playing the game when I first picked it up. But I also reminded myself, it’s a old game, and I came back a couple months later and finally got into it.
The dialogue is the overall best thing in this game. They clearly did not make the game to be fully optimized for fluent movement and facial expressions. two of us lyrics But I think the sacrifice is well worth it, and caters towards the audience, the voice acting is also; SUPERB! To get flirting into a game and it working, while having so many outcomes, amazing music. This game is so good, you can only really find so much to critique. And how beautiful the game looks, you feel like you are in a real world. People have accents, there are different cities, there are islands, you can travel with boat or horse. I mean.. This game is just the best story telling game I have ever, and will ever play.
Great video! For the questions on the story, many character interactions rely on you having played the previous games or having read the books. Like Djikstra and your vampire buddy in blood and wine. I had no idea who they were until reading the books. Ciri has a very large presence in the books explaining the Wild Hunt and because I haven't played the previous games I don't know much of Yennefer's and Triss' history with Geralt.
@@hugomintrom6264 I read the books after playing the game so I'm definitely overemphasizing how necessary they are. Reading the books just makes some parts of the game just a little bit more rewarding, I know I definitely didn't need them, and I don't think most people did either, it definitely shows with how successful the game did. But bottom line is, I agree with your assertation that a game doesn't need 7 books to be great, because after all, the game's overall reception certainly speaks for itself and I hope you have a good day
@@hugomintrom6264except its literally witcher 3, its the third game in a series that focuses on storytelling. Thats like watching the third Harry Potter movie and complaining that you dont understand any of the characters.
Verry happy that i found you man, you are amazing, and i apreciate your work, and how honest you are, this is a very important quality of this channel, thank you !
It looks like at least someone from the Witcher 3 team saw the video which is awesome. Looking at the patch notes it seems they've recently added oils to the radial menu and specifically optimized the use of cpu cores with DirectX 12. It's awesome to see Jack making a change.
@@funtourhawk I’ve been playing with a 3070 and I’m able to run 1440p ray tracing ultra settings with about 80 fps. Dips down to like 40-60 in novigrad though.
Having read the books, the way he is acting towards Yennefer is super accurate ahah. He is totally under her spell and is even entranced by her perfume. He is a super simp for her. He might be gruff and sometimes a bit of an asshole in the books, but when it comes to her he is totally her submissive boyfriend
18:08....The "Geralt run" imitation had me crying in my car at a stop light. I was shrieking with laughter like a lunatic. Needless to say I received a lot of concerned stares. 😆
18:58 This happened to me during the swamp missing cart quest; I saw a fence, and naturally thought I could clear it, but instead I got caught, then had to back up, tried it again, and the horse went parallel to the fence then landed on top, stuck. 😡😂
Summary of the criticisms: "I jumped into the 3rd game in the series, knowing nothing about the lore and I was not spoon fed all the information there is!" "This 2015 game that is still a benchmark for character's facial animations in RPG doesn't have Emilia Clark level of expressiveness " " The character with well established lore who's role I am playing in this role playing game gives me only options that are supported by the lore" "This motion captured animations recorded with actual people are not realistic" "Roach is annoying" (fair) "I have no game literacy and potions or upgrades in an RPG confuse me" "There exist minor and mostly optional inconvenient mechanics in this 60+h game"
I played the witcher 3 for a few hours in 2015 and liked it. I fell off and always regretted it, I tried again a few years ago and was not feeling it. However a week ago I was craving a fantasy game and given skyrims to old, fragons dogma is a mess and elden ring is to hard, I started the witcher 3 and I am addicted absolutely loving it!

Thank ya! Don’t worry i’m makin the next video as we speak
Praying with Jericho that this doesn't get age restricted again! You're edititing and production for this video are amazing!
Wow this is a criminally underrated video! I sure did enjoy this video! Like and subscribe!
Happy birthday Jack! 🎉
Thank you!
Dude its CRIMINAL how under rated you are. I can't stop binge watching your videos. Every single one is so interesting and well made.
"he moves like a shark" you nailed it. Having played Maneater, I can confirm they feel the same. Also your English accent accent was really good
While I am really sad to hear that you lost that 100K views on this video, I hope this video does even better! This video was honestly incredible and well worth the time and effort you put into it
thanks Eth!
Happy birthday Jack and I will surely rewatch this absolute gem of a video :)
Thank you!!
Watching this again cuz why not? You did an amazing job man!
tyty!
This has got to be one of my favorite commentaries. I haven’t laughed this hard in a while! Definitely subbing.
I’ve been following the age restriction story on your instagram and every time i saw another story about it, i rolled my eyes over and over and over aaaaand over again. I feel for you dude, this video is superb and definitely your best work yet! Don’t let this put you down
This was an awesome video! Appreciate your dedication to fully immerse yourself in the content!
Your editing is absolutely next level. It really stands out as I jump from channel to channel on TH-cam.
Really love the effort you put into making videos. Definitely one of my favourite channels.
Hey dude, I love your videos and you're an amazing storyteller tho
I think it's criminally unfair you don't own that many subscribers, because you definitely deserve it
Please don't stop making videos, big fan
Love,
A fan from Sao Paulo, Brazil
Ps: I am reaaaally high right now on edibles, and on my other screen I am playing Witcher 3, while blasting some Opeth songs at my flat haha
DOPE, pun intended, thanks brother!
Best wishes, may the algorithm be with you!
just found your channel randomly, god it was the best thing youtube recommended to me in a long time :)
this video was amazing, i really enjoyed it! you've earned a subscriber homie
Above and beyond for every video. Fast becoming my favourite gaming-orientated channel. Love you Jack 👏
Is it for real a game a noob could play?
@@ItzMattchu_Yes the game is tailor made for casuals who aren't into the more complex and expansive RPGs
Another great video from budget Ian from Smosh
been falling in love w this channel lately. Such creativity and depth
Just wanted to let you know that they added a "auto-apply oils" feature in combat in the newest update!
Holy Shit dude. What a video. Like seriously man, the sheer quality of this was insane. Good job.
18:32 couldn’t agree more with all these points. The audio pauses and bulky movements made me stop playing the game when I first picked it up. But I also reminded myself, it’s a old game, and I came back a couple months later and finally got into it.
Insane editing and scripting every damn time, i admire you sir 🙏🙏 Please keep making videos 😂
The dialogue is the overall best thing in this game. They clearly did not make the game to be fully optimized for fluent movement and facial expressions. two of us lyrics
But I think the sacrifice is well worth it, and caters towards the audience, the voice acting is also; SUPERB!
Why should you have to read 7 books to be able to understand a game market towards casual gamers that’s a ridiculous statement
@@thatoneguy9822 they marketed the game clearly towards an audience who had never played the other.
Just came across your channel out of nowhere and I just like to say your quality is next level keep up the good work!!!!!!!!
Verry happy that i found you man, you are amazing, and i apreciate your work, and how honest you are, this is a very important quality of this channel, thank you !
This was truly a masterpiece
Theres an "Auto apply Oils" option in the gameplay menu
yeah and also through the sign wheel you can quickselect oils
gotta say the amount of effort you put in the presentation is awesome.
They did do quicker oils! There's an "auto oil" option in the gameplay settings, lol.
It looks like at least someone from the Witcher 3 team saw the video which is awesome. Looking at the patch notes it seems they've recently added oils to the radial menu and specifically optimized the use of cpu cores with DirectX 12. It's awesome to see Jack making a change.
I bought a 4080 just to play it with full RT/frame gen...runs like fucking butter now
@@funtourhawk I’ve been playing with a 3070 and I’m able to run 1440p ray tracing ultra settings with about 80 fps. Dips down to like 40-60 in novigrad though.
Dude your account got hacked it seems
How can you tell?
Having read the books, the way he is acting towards Yennefer is super accurate ahah. He is totally under her spell and is even entranced by her perfume. He is a super simp for her. He might be gruff and sometimes a bit of an asshole in the books, but when it comes to her he is totally her submissive boyfriend
I gotta say, I just watched three of your videos back to back and your content is awesome. I'm gonna check out your patron. Nice work my dude!
18:08....The "Geralt run" imitation had me crying in my car at a stop light. I was shrieking with laughter like a lunatic. Needless to say I received a lot of concerned stares. 😆
I love how almost every problem he has with characters or story could be solved by just playing games, reading books or watching series.
basically non-problems lmao
yeah. its kinda "typical american consumer" problem. refuses to use brain, whines about narrative
dude its nirnroot not ninroot
how does this not have a million views already this is a crazy good review. ign get a load of this
I rarely watching longer videos than 15min but yours was a joy.
Thanks a lot
18:58 This happened to me during the swamp missing cart quest; I saw a fence, and naturally thought I could clear it, but instead I got caught, then had to back up, tried it again, and the horse went parallel to the fence then landed on top, stuck. 😡😂
Summary of the criticisms:
"I jumped into the 3rd game in the series, knowing nothing about the lore and I was not spoon fed all the information there is!"
"This 2015 game that is still a benchmark for character's facial animations in RPG doesn't have Emilia Clark level of expressiveness "
" The character with well established lore who's role I am playing in this role playing game gives me only options that are supported by the lore"
"This motion captured animations recorded with actual people are not realistic"
"Roach is annoying" (fair)
"I have no game literacy and potions or upgrades in an RPG confuse me"
"There exist minor and mostly optional inconvenient mechanics in this 60+h game"
You can go to the settings and make it to where you automatically add oils to your blade
only was added with 4.03 2months after this video was made tho, but yeah you're right.
bro ur videos are sick youtube jus blessed my feed fr fr
Great comprehensive review! I’m working my way through the game for the first time ever and it’s blowing me away.
