    Another tip. I generally only use a small portion of my source clips after my initial rough cut. So I do my rough cut and then use Media Management to copy (losslessly), *trim* and *relink* a new much reduced set of source clips. This often reduces the size of source clips by 50 - 75%. Having done that I generate proxy media (as you suggest) and because the source has been trimmed it is much faster and the proxies take up much less room on my SSD.

    Regarding tip #3: if you right-click the bypass icon, you can select to bypass only color grades or fusion, instead of both.

      Nice video Jason, the only thing I would add to that list. Change the project format as well. If you receive a project from someone who's working on a PC & you are using a Mac. I had that issue once. I had to change the file project format back to ProRes 422. After that, my mac would breeze through the footage without any problems.

I thought it was just my PC being deliberately horrible to me. More than "helped", completely solved my problem for me in my case, whereas most/many TH-cam videos on this and other topics, well intentioned and well informed also, often don't actually cover off the particular case of the problem you/one is having. I felt a bit bad because as soon as I quickly tested your second tip and found it worked I stopped watching and went busily back to editing, but I've subscribed and I know where I will be coming straight back to look for more Davinci tips in the next few hours or days! Thanks so much Jason! That has helped a LOT! It's weird though, as I've been editing with this program and this lapttop for a couple of years (thanks to your tuition!) without any lagging and it's always been absolutely accurate - even on an hour long video. Yet, the last few weeks it's been extremely difficult to use this program as, even when first starting on a short, 3 minute video, the lagging has been terrible. I uninstalled the program and reinstalled it, but no difference. However, after following all your instructions, it is MUCH better, though not perfect, as, even after doing everything you suggested, it is still running slow off and on. I bought this laptop a couple of years ago as I needed one with more power to do the editing and it's been going really well until now. Any other ideas by any chance, you, who knows everything there is to know about DaVinci Resolve? Best wishes, Alison Hood from Western Australia

    Here's a tip many have missed... Under "Power Options" (Windows) > Change your Power Plan to "High Performance" or "Ultimate Performance". If your PC doesn't have those options search Google/TH-cam to enable those options. This problem plagued my PC's speed no matter how many tips I tried from videos like this one - The only reason I kept looking for an answer is cause I spent way too much on a custom build to have slow-down issues lol. Mine seems very choppy and I have a decent system with 32GB RAM. The other thing I wondered about is if the paid version would run any faster with its better support for GPUs. I've also wondered about storing my media files on an SSD drive.

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! You’re on the right track. The studio version will run better than the free version, no doubt. I saw nice improvement on my 2015 MacBook Pro when I upgraded to the studio version. Also, keeping your media files on an SSD as well as sending your cache files to an SSD will make a good difference as well. I use the Samsung T5 and Samsung T7 as the drives for my active projects. Slow drives can definitely cause a bottleneck.

    Regarding the Render Cache...after poking around, I finally found it in the Project Settings...does that mean I'll have to set that every time I start a new project? Or is it saved now as a "default" setting for subsequent projects? For that matter, what about all these adjustments - are they saved or do I have to reset them each time? Thanks, Jason!! You really should officially change your name to "Hugh Daman".

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you set a project preset and make that the default for when you start a new project, it will have the file path saved in it. Otherwise you'll have to set the file path every time.

    is there a way to save the playback resolution and render cache settings? It is annoying having to change them every time I open the app

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sure, you could open a new black project, make the settings changes you'd like, which would include the playback resolution and render cache, then you can save those project settings as the default project settings, so you won't have to do it every time you open Resolve. Once you've got your project settings the way you want, open the project settings, click the 3 dots at the top right and choose either 'save as preset' or 'set current settings as default preset'. This way, any time you make a new project it should be all set up and ready to go.

    Changing your timeline from 4k to 1080p doesn't mean you have to switch back via project settings at the end. That's done on the deliver tab anyway, right? Or have I been doing this wrong all this time?!

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can change just the export settings (that's what I do for TH-cam), however I think you get an even better result if you change the timeline back to 4K and render in 4K vs a 1080 timeline and rendering in 4K. I don't know why that is though. 😜

    Quick question. I have some larger files (~15-25 minutes 1080p, 60fps - kids soccer games) that are jumping a lot during playback in DR 19. I have turned down the playback resolution and turned on smart for the render cache, which sort of help. When I tried to use Optimize Media, the resulting files were gigantic and completely filled up my internal hard drive (working files are stored externally). Is that typical, or did I miss a step somewhere? I don't use color or audio effects - I pretty much just add a little title/scorecard and mute the original audio, and that's it, nothing cool - so are there any other things I can try until I can get the RAM on my computer upgraded?

      Typically you want the timeline frame rate to be 24, 25, or 30 fps. Anything filmed that higher frame rate should be used for slow motion and be a multiple of your timeline frame rate.

When I was in the free version, I got choppy playback but I could render. My GPU drivers just got updated, however I already got a refund on the studio version and I'm hesitant to purchase again. What they did is essentially make the laptop and do a desktop by removing the wireless Wi-Fi card in the mini PCI slot, which connected to this device which was a full PCI slot which was powered by the power supply and ran the graphics card from there. So the downside of it is you would lose the mobility of the laptop but the upside of it is you get a desktop graphics card. It was interesting nonetheless. Seeing how expensive everything is nowadays and that my laptop isn't terrible, it definitely peaked my interest when you talk about getting a graphics card this device a power supply and possibly even the studio version of resolve that could use my laptops graphics card as well as the external graphics card all for around $800 which is on board with or less than getting an EGPU case and a new graphics card. 😅 That was a lot .

If you have everything set to 30 FPS, that shouldn’t be a problem, but I will double check the timeline frame right along with all the footage frame rates.
