  • A quick review of the Aygo stating how much it cost and what miles per gallon or litre one gets out of the car. It's a great ca and in this world of debt, you should stop leasing your car for £400 a month and buy a car outright.

    I'm 58 years old, everything's paid off and in theory I could drive something silly. Last year I paid £4000 for a 2011 Peugeot 107 which is a badge engineered Toyota Aygo. I was expecting frugal but somewhat miserable driving. I couldn't have been more wrong. Yes it's frugal but it's an absolute hoot to drive. It's not fast and the handling is only average but it just feels cheeky, frisky and fun. It reminds me of the cars I drove in the 1980s. It feels like I'm driving again rather than been taken for a ride in a sterile box which is what modern cars feel like. The car actually has soul. I absolutely love the back to basics motoring and it's saving me £130 a month in running costs on my previous car. I still look on Autotrader and wonder about the next car I'll buy but then I set off in my 107 and feel like I want to keep it forever because it's so much fun. I'd go as far as to say it's the best decision I've made in my motoring life. Something else I like about it is that other drivers seem to leave me alone. I was expecting to be bullied but boy racers don't feel they have to prove themselves against me, the police don't even notice me (not that there are many about these days) and people just don't seem to get upset. It's just a little car that doesn't rile people. What's not to like?

    Great little cars mate, just bought x2 last month, getting between 59 and 72 mpg👍 100 insurance 17 plates, free tax, 7500 each ish. 25k miles one x-cite, and one Xpress. Had performance cars, but these are cracking little cars. Keep the Map sensor clean and 6000miles/6 mth oil changes to stop piston rings sticking. You're bang on with what you've said couldn't agree more✌️

    Small cars are fun to drive and running costs are easier on the pocket. I bought a brand new nissan pixo in for just less that £5k in Nov 2010, had it 4 years and sold it to my sister who still has it. I then got a Peugeot 1.6 hdi diesel to tow a caravan round Spain. It did 65/67 mpg motorway and half that towing caravan. Thinking of going back to something like an Aygo as I'm back to short journeys mostly. Thing I've noticed though is older small cheap small cars even with low mileage suffer from under body corrosion to arms and axles etc. even if they look good on top.

    I have a Yaris, 2006 1.0, same engine as the Aygo. Some years ago, I had the use of a 2012 Aygo for about 10 days. Really enjoyed it. I did note at the time, that if you're driving on a road thats a bit of a switchback ( the A303 in my case ), and you're trying to push on a bit, then that mpg figure is going to drop a lot. I get around 61mpg in my Yaris, doing an almost steady 60 mph on a motorway. Otherwise, general running around, it's about 55 mpg on average. Why I chose the Yaris rather than an Aygo, C1 or 107..., is that the Yaris is somewhat better appointed, fo example the doors close with a solid thunk rather than the clang of an Aygo, C1 or 107. Do agree with you..., that when there are cars like these around why bother with some expensive newish barge.

    • @bankruptpensioner
      @bankruptpensioner  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Andrew, many thanks for the comment. I agree, with switchbacks and on and off the throttle, mpg will reduce. Interesting how the Yaris achieved the mpg as this is slightly larger than the aygo. Yes, the Yaris is a better larger car and this is reflected in the new price. It is a pity that the Aygo has gone thorugh a number of version releases, as each release, the new price has just gone up and up which means the car at a new price simply outstrips the demographic that it was aimed at. The problem today is it is so easy to get a new car on PCP. The BWM Series 1 was a great car however today, they are the worst to buy second hand. The problem here was that the young got the car on PCP which naturally stretched their budget (but it would be worth it just for the BMW badge) and as such, they were not serviced. Hence, the second hand cars are now classed as unreliable - simply because they were not looked after in their early life. It's the same with Range Rovers. They too have a name of being unreliable but thats not the case it you service them as they should be serviced however we see so many of them on PCP by people who cannot afford £900 a month - and then again, they are not looked after so become unreliable. Something to think about :)

    I've had a 2010 Aygo with 144k on the clock for a couple of years now and without any problems at all, about 55-60mpg and cheap insurance with £20 annual car tax, it is also ULEZ compliant (ie. you don't have to pay it if you go into a zone).
    Acceleration isn't great, but it will cruise happily at 70mph, 4 doors for comfort of the occasional passengers and a Tardis like hatchback boot that seems to take more than it should.
    I use this daily for work driving all around Surrey, it's easy to park because of its size, and oddly always looks clean even when its not, it must be the Cayman blue metallic finish.
    The air conditioning and tilt-able steering wheel gives it a luxury feel, and it just looks like a nice car when I have to park up in people's driveways.
    Not at all bad for a £1500 motor I'd say.

    I own a 2011 Aygo and have for a few years now. I'm not a learner driver and most of my friends own larger BMWs or similar, often joking about the aygo. However I absolutely love it, £20 a year tax, very cheap insurance and an easy 65mpg. I can do all the servicing on it so no large overheads.
    Parking is a breeze and as it's a "top" spec model, Aircon and electric windows.
    Only issues I've had are water ingress (seals are crap) and the catalytic converter rotted through (85k). Other than that it's been faultless.
    In this economy, fuels at stupid prices and when you combine the savings you make (tax, insurance, running costs) it quite literally saves thousands over the years.

    • @bankruptpensioner
      @bankruptpensioner  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Matthew, thanks for the comment. You are spot on. It really is a good car and like you say, with fuel being overly expensive (thats another video), it makes sense to have something that costs very little to run. Cars like the Aygo make EV cars look far too expensive to buy and run. :)

    The Peugeot 107,citroen c1 and Aygo are all the same cars, basically the prior 2 are rebadged aygos with different astectics, the only difference is the aygo costs more because of the toyota branding, i got my c1 and its absolutely amazing on fuel economy, cheap on insurance and cheap running costs as well as free rd tax. So anyone who doesn't want to pay extra for the toyota branding just get the c1 although the Aygo does look the prettiest out of the lot, they are all practically the same cars with the same parts and engine.

Not the best quality in materials (to be expected from the class of these cars) but really good for small areas and parking and also good fuel economy (I’ve got 6.2 l/100km (I believe that’s about 46mpg) average over about 20kkm with a lot of city driving). I’ve had plenty to change on it but it’s to be expected for the price I got the car at. I love how small the exterior it is but how roomy the interior is. I've had all kinds of cars in the past but as a day to day, functional, practical and reliable car its hard to beat. On another note, I just got my son a 2014 Citroen C1 (an Aygo to all intents and purposes) for his first car and it's a great little thing. Zero road tax, high MPG and super low insurance and does its job just fine. Parts are cheap and servicing is very much in the realms of a DIY'er. I bought my 2012 Aygo 8 years ago (in 2014) with 10,000 miles for £5,450 and I've driven it 90,000 miles totalling 100,000 on the clock. I haven't really had any issues with it.
    I change the oil every 5,000 miles. I say no issues but the exhaust system on mine seems to be a weak point for corrosion. My muffler has been replaced twice over those 8 years (the most recent replacement was coated in silver exhaust paint and currently has little to no rust) and I replaced the center pipe of the exhaust system last year which I'm starting to wish I also coated in exhaust paint. It's not that bad though because replacement mufflers was around £35-40 and the center pipe was around £45 (no labour costs as I did it myself). The Aygo is an extremely easy car to work on though.
    I've also had the brake pipes to the rear of the car replaced and the front brake pipes came up as an advisory on my most recent MOT.

      Hi Michael, thanks for your post. I have replaced the clutch on a previous Aygo, and this cost £300 which for a clutch, is a really good price. I guess the cost has gone up due to inflation however, this proves that the cost of maintanence is cheap for these cars. And like you state, if you service the car regularly, this little engine will go forever. Let's say that your car today is worth £2000 after your eight years of use. That means the car has depreciated by some £3500. This means the car has cost you some £437 each year, or £36 a month. I am sure you can't get a car for £36 a month from the dealerships. The Aygo is a great car and makes the costs of motoring very affordable. Thanks for your response.

      @@bankruptpensioner I may just be about to find out. I had a crash on Friday and I can imagine replacing the bumper and wing and respraying them will not be permitted by the insurance company... So I either take the car as a Cat c/n or just take the cash and maybe buy a Suzuki Celerio? I reckon the damage can be fixed for about £300 though DIY wise... I'm pretty good at resprays as I've already done the bumper due to lacquer peel. The only issue is I don't have a clean room so I'd just have to be happy with what ever contaminants drop on the paintwork.
      I'm just not sure it's worth doing insurance wise as I can imagine a cat c/n would cost allot more.
      I just wish I'd bought a 1st gen honda insight for £3,000 as they're now selling for £10,000. (It's a hybrid with a manual transmission). Although I can imagine parts are priced extremely high and are hard to get hold of. I'm sure there's only about 100-200 in the UK

    Mostly owned small cars over decades, and had my mid-range 18 reg Aygo for two years. Yes, it has much to recommend. However, also a few negatives.
    Thin paint coating tends towards scratches and chips exposing undercoat. Lack of unobstructed central air vent results in cold left hand on steering wheel on low temp mornings. As an older person, the seat construction causes me back discomfort when driving for longer than an hour. Restricted door access makes back seat use inadvisable to anyone with limited leg motility. Rear passengers complain of jarring ride over potholes. Beware of Android connection failing to operate on some X Play models. Never worked on mine, except for phone and text only access - owners forums suggest Toyota withdrew support for app. Annoying, as unable to access phone's Google maps guidance facility.
    Overall, a cheap to run and reliable little car if you have no unreasonable expectations.

    It's the same car as the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107. When I bought mine, the Toyota version commanded a premium for the same year and mileage, which is daft becuase they all came off the same production line. The differences are cosmetic and trim levels. Underneath it is identical to the others.
    Back to basics here too. I bought the Pug 107 version 2 years ago as a stopgap when my old sports car was about to become an uneconomically expensive MOT fail and I needed cheap worry-free wheels in a hurry.
    Later on, I decided that as I mainly do local journeys and live on a tight budget, and it does most of what I need from a car, I could not really justify a fancy replacement.
    The Pug is basic, unrefined, cheap to run and has a fun feel. I can do a lot of the work on it myself.
    It is a 2011, cost £2400 with 68K on the clock. All motoring costs on top of the purchase price have been about £1000 over the 2 years since - fuel, insurance, home servicing and repairs, everything.
    Mine is not perfect but feels like it will last a few years. If it doesn't then I am not in too deep.
    This little car has grown on me to the point where I have decided to stick with it until there is a good reason not to.

      Hi Particle, in the past I also had a C1. This being one of the reasons to get the Aygo. As you say, they are basically all the same car with the same power plant and running gear. This range of cars is the modern day mini. That said, the latest from Toyota is getting to be the price of the modern day mini which is just silly. If you need a reliable, easy to work on, functional car that runs on a budget, then this is the winner. It really is a great car and common sense says this is a way forward, the problem is not many listen to the common sense 😆.

      The mpg is not just determined by the manufacturer it is determined by the driver and how they drive. So mpg varies depending on your driving. Usually these cars don't give you the mpg they say they do but they do a very good job on giving you excellent miles on a 35 litre tank.

      They're not too bad on icy roads and light snow in the UK, which I can imagine means they're even better with decent winter tyres. I can't imagine they're great in deep snow but the skinny wheels cut through light to medium snow pretty well.

    • @bankruptpensioner
      @bankruptpensioner  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, and sorry for the slow reponse. In snow and ice, they are really good. That said, you need to be a good driver to drive properly in the snow and ice. Not a lot of people in the UK get extended exposure to bad winter weather, hence the don't learn how to drive, hence the chaos on the UK roads when we get 2 days of snow :).

      Reason city driving is lower is because of the stop-start traffic and driving in lower gears more often. You tend to use more revs to accelerate in city environments so you burn more petrol
