    Reminder that From Software made Sekiro and revived Armored Core with AC6 explicitly BECAUSE they don't want to be "The Dark Souls" developers. And Miyazaki-san has said that he WANTS the new, young talent to flourish.
    And I will personally give blind faith to From Soft. They've earned it. 15 years down the line, and they haven't made a bad game to their audience. If the worst thing they can say about Dark Souls 2 is "it's bad *_compared_* to Dark Souls and Dark Souls 3", that sounds like high praise to me because of rightfully high expectations.

    If you're not excited for Nightreign then be excited for the lessons FS will learn, and the features they'll innovate and implement into their next big game. FS is an iterative company, and I've not been disappointed for the decade I've played their games. So they're worth giving the benefit of the doubt.

    This is a brilliant move by FromSoft. Massive success with ER, orders of magnitude greater than previous titles fills the coffers. Now they can make a few small budget games, experiment, innovate, go crazy creatively... and still have that ER money to keep them afloat. Meantime, they see what fans like in those small projects & begin their next big IP with all the lessons learned on value size budget games like Night Reign.

    • @lorecumi7141

    I dig it. It's just dumb fun that I will enjoy until the next Miyazaki game.
    Also, this explain why Fromsoftware was so quick about gaining full rights over the Elden Ring IP over BandaiNamco. Because, if they didn't, this would have been the first of many "side projects" involving the milking of the IP

    • @BrandonDenny-we1rw
      @BrandonDenny-we1rw วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thats actually not why. If they didnt own the IP theyd need to clear any and all projects with the holding company first like how Sony owns the Bloodborne IP and even if Fromsoft wanted to do something with it, they cant because they dont own the IP.

    • @garjian0
      @garjian0 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think they'd have to drop PvP at that point. Readability is important, and right now you know broadly what your opponent can do in a moment by looking at their big weapons, but having meaning racial abilities hidden beneath a full set for armour would make knowing what you're fighting difficult.

      @@garjian0 I mean not really it can work as with bosses by making their moveset readable.
      Racial features can also be pretty miniscule, like they did it with Elden ring DLC where you transform into an Omen or humanoid Dragon.
      Though the only problem would be making armor to wear like for example helmets and the sets available would be limited.

    It sounds interesting, but I hope they figure out a way to keep it fresh without needing constant updates. I think each run should limit your options by like having the circle not take up the whole map and be somewhat random, like a BR. You would have to mix up your runs each time because you would be forced to.
    It being able to be played solo and offline is a very good move as well.

    My one concern is that this is contributing more to the death of invasions. I know it’s not really a popular mechanic with most of the fan base but it is so goddamn unique for the people who do like it. I think it was done terribly in ER, tying it solely to co-op and then providing like zero incentives for co-opers to kill invaders, and invaders getting nothing out of it, so the whole thing became a vicious cycle. It was in a good place in DS3, why have they walked it back so much?

    • @xsubzerox3412
      @xsubzerox3412 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Getting useless covenant items were never a useful reward
      The balance for it is perfect, it should ONLY br there if the host has an ally on the field because. It is literally zero challenge for the invader if the host is solo and has to deal with the invader along side enemies.
      Having allies on the field actually encourages the host try and actually fight the invader instead of instant disconnect.

    • @thedarkrider987

      Invasions just sucked in general. A lot of people just want to play the game or do challenge runs. It doesn't feel good to be going through a dungeon or new area that's pvp central and get invaded by a sweat lord every five feet. The only reason to invade was for achievements, cool weapons or spell from a covenant, or just the pure joy of ruining someone else's day

    What terrifies me as well as many other Souls fans is where this leads. If this was just a one-off experimentation kind of game and they still continued to make the single-player/campaign focused/story driven games we love then fine I'm down with it, but with pretty much every other developer thats not how it's gone. • @TheStormsinger
    @TheStormsinger 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

    The more I think about this project, the more I like it. The whole thing screams experiment to me. They want to play fast and loose with mechanics and concepts not usually found in souls games while allowing a new director (who Miyazaki chose to lead a project) to stretch his creative legs and gain some experience building a game, while not having to worry about budgets so much since they already have tons of assets to play with.
    I know that there is a lot of pessimism floating around but its unfounded for now, and it is actually a good thing to see a studio experiment with smaller projects. Taking risks is how you find new ideas that can make future games better or it can even spin off into its own new thing. If it doesn't pan out, then that's OK too, this is the studio that makes games centered around failure and self improvement after all.

    Even if it turns out to be mid, it's great to see experimentation being done. I hope From Soft continues with their bigger games and have smaller experimental titles in the future. It gives us more games, as the smaller ones can be done on a lesser budget, and it lets them experiment to find new cool ways of adapting the genre. I'm here for nightreign. I rejoiced to hear the news as well, something really new fun and interesting out of from soft that will allow them to innovate and hopefully develop some boss AI that is better able to handle multiple enemies. The base premise of the game is sound I think, the only thing that worries me is asset reuse. I don't mind asset reuse as much as some, I actually like the idea of DS bosses showing up, and I didn't mind fighting ERs minibosses multiple times either, but only to a point. It's the 12 basic dragons and erdtree avatars is where I draw the line, that is clearly excessive. If I finish a night in nightreign and they throw 3 erdtree avatars at me for me and my friends to fight ill be disappointed. Not every boss needs to unique, but they need to be smarter and less excessive with their asset reuse. It will be especially evident and egregious when we are doing round after round after round if we are fighting the same enemies and bosses. I hope they've got their enemy design teams busy.

    Somehow this video made me both more hopeful and more skeptical of this release. Because all of the new gameplay changes--aside from the in game currency stuff--all sound very interesting and cool. The problem is the game they're being implemented into. Elden Ring's combat system isn't really that great at being either an action game or an RPG, because it's trying to do both. So this game tethering itself at least somewhat to that system is a red flag. Also, I'm very apprehensive about the randomization of the map and encounters. Yes, the randomizer mod is popular, but it's also notorious for having some really cursed seeds. Another concern is that all of the boss designs then have to be changed to try and work in every conceivable arena, which we've already been shown doesn't work with things like the dragon fights in the base game and DLC. And finally, I know a lot of people will defend the shameless reusing of assets by arguing that "they want to improve those fights" or that "they're trying to save money". For the first argument, why would rebalancing the fight for multiplayer necessarily make it better? And based on the track record of boss design in Elden Ring, the redesigns will most likely just add a bunch of flashy and superfluous moves that end up taking away from the original fight. As for the second defense, do people realize just how much money ER made? It has sold 28.6 million copies so far. Not even including the extra price of the 40$ DLC, at 70 dollars per copy that's over 2 BILLION dollars in revenue. Idc how much the game costs to make or market, that's still a fat payday of at the very least over a billion dollars. No one was expecting Fromsoft to release a game next year either, so people that are saying that these more original games take time to make aren't really defending the issue. I want them to take more time, I don't necessarily want a new game next year if it's going to be this derivative. And finally, reusing old bosses severely limits the creativity of encounters and combat. I would much prefer a bigger focus on creative, puzzle type fights like akin to those in Demons Souls, where most bosses have some sort of exploitable weakness. One example of a new concept could be a take on a duo boss where one enemy is speedy, agile, jumping around on walls and pillars, staying out of your reach while using ranged attacks but has relatively low HP, so knocking them down from a perch or catching them off guard could spell game over for that enemy, while the other is a brutish tank that charges at you from close range. Therefore, you could implement a more vertical arena that's tailored to this fight to make sure the player can handle both as they see fit. Maybe they want to keep their distance from the tank, so they stay high up or at range, but then have to deal with constant pressure from the ranged boss. Or you could strategically bait the ranged boss into a corner or trap scenario, or use tools to knock them down and finish them off.
    But relying on old boss designs means that they're stuck with the same concepts and limitations of those past games.

    I loved Dark Souls 1, 2 and 3. Have 100's of hours in each of 'em... but I've only been able to put 7h into Elden Ring, and every time I turn the game on I am instantly and immediately disinterested and bored by it.
    I don't even know why.

    Tbh I'm not interested in Elden Ring in playing it at all, I'm just not looking for that kind of challenge in my video games for the vast majority of that, the game just sounds infuriating to me personally. But I'm glad Elden Ring has done well and I do hope it does well here too. Plus I didn't even know what the freak this was so glad to be informed on it. Thanks Thievery of Mugs. 👍

    Ahh yes another Roguelike, do repeated runs where you start with nothing, earn some neat stuff, and then lose it again when you start the next run. Some games do it right where every run let's you upgrade base stats or traits to feel like there's actually progression. Others.... The beginning is a slog every time and then it's boring.
    "Streamlining" is not a good thing in Elden Ring as they described. Bosses that used to take an hour by themselves if you were new or inexperienced are now supposed to take a few minutes to kill before the next 15 minute day??? That's sounds like baby mode. Either way it sounds like a spinoff cash grab. Maybe a play to make their valuation look better before a Sony buyout like what bungie did. We'll have to see.

      A cash grab would be something low effort, low risk, with a high price tag.
      This is a lot of effort to change the core design of a major IP which is a major risk whether you recognize it as one or not as internally if it doesnt go well would not just discourage fromsoft from trying to experiment as much but also other developers.

  • @yslaar
    @yslaar 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    It's FromSoft, so I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they'll be the devs who finally get me to really enjoy roguelike/lite gameplay loops. Hades is there, of course, but Hades is really its own unique beast in this space, so I feel like I can hardly count it. I'm most excited to see how Nightreign will push the already impeccable Souls combat into something even greater. The fluidity and expression of movement in the trailer already was enough to sell me on it, and I bet that's just the tip of the iceberg.

    Thing is, this is not “trying something new” and it’s not “a new direction”. This is FromSoftware taking a major step into mainstream appeal, pandering to the lowest common denominator and it’s a step we never ever thought they would take. It’s a direction we’ve seen nearly every major game studio travel and we know how tragic the fate of the artistry usually becomes. They’ve very blatantly stolen elements from every trendy game and slapped an Elden Ring sticker on it to make sure it sells a ton (which I’m sure it will). There is literally 0 risk involved, at least not financially. And the fact they’ve carelessly put it next to Elden Ring will forever damage the original and appear as a blemish on a otherwise true modern masterpiece. All that being said, I have no doubt it’s going to be a great game and a fun experience, but it’s simultaneously the first true step of what will probably be a degradation of arguably the greatest and undoubtedly the most artistic video game company of our age. This is exactly what some fans feared following the success of Elden Ring. Let’s not pretend otherwise.

    • @Phikinnie
      @Phikinnie 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      No offense, but Elden Ring and even the Souls franchise at large already IS mainstream. And pretending as if FromSoftware isn’t a mainstream company is incredibly incorrect. Elden Ring itself was already a huge step into mainstream by way of an open world. This game is FromSoftware attempting to delve into other genres and getting out of their comfort zone. They COULD just continue making games with the exact same formula and getting money but instead they’re willing to try something new even if it’s not a very risky attempt. That alone should justify this game’s existence, not to mention a focus on Co-op is likely due to FromSoftware wanting to improve their capability with Co-op, which is very welcome considering multiplayer in basically all of their recent games have been very weak and more of an add on than a true feature. Also, you could serve yourself better if you stopped making judgements on a company and its future of a single trailer, we don’t even know what half the playable characters in this game look like and you’re considering the game a cheap rip off. Do yourself a favor and have a little faith in a company that’s more than earned the benefit of the doubt. And finally, there is quite literally nothing wrong with a company wanting to take from popular concepts in gaming for their new game, ESPECIALLY if FromSoftware wants to considering how much of gaming has been, not so subtly, trying to copy and achieve the success that FromSoftware has achieved. But also calling what we’ve seen “copying” isn’t correct, if we called everything that was inspired by something else a copy, well we might as well just write off every open world game that’s released in the last decade, including Elden Ring.

    • @Ryemandeneskeetit
      @Ryemandeneskeetit 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @Phikinnie First of all I more than respect your opinion and at the very least we can agree that we all simply put just don’t want FromSoftware to change their very important and much beloved values when it comes to game direction. That being said, I don’t agree with the premise of Elden Ring and the rest of the Souls games being mainstream at all. If you’ve played them all, which I’m sure you have, you’ll probably agree that most Souls titles have always been or at least felt open world to a large extent and Elden Ring was a much more natural progression of the series, albeit a phenomenal one. And the main factor of mainstream really isn’t popularity; anything can potentially gain mainstream popularity by being “too”infectiously good but there is obviously a clear distinction between pandering to mainstream audiences and making a product so groundbreaking that you pull the mainstream to you. FromSoftware have up until now almost uniquely been pioneers of the latter and shown the world how you can still gain mainstream-level success without sacrificing your originality and artistry. If an innovative gourmet restaurant suddenly became the most popular in the business due to their sheer and undeniable quality, that doesn’t automatically make them the new McDonald’s. But if the company themselves then suddenly started introducing Big Macs and chicken nuggets to the menu, well then they’re certainly heading in a worrying direction when it comes to core values. In the end it really just depends on how much you value these independent pieces of artistry, lots of people just want fun games and don’t necessarily connect with a game on a deeper level and that’s totally fair and just as viable. Some people really care about consistency and preserving masterpieces while some people get very excited when Spider-Man shows up in the new Captain America movie. Some of us really need and value these experiences of connecting with an art piece on a profound level and being reached and touched on a greatly subconscious, pre-developmental stage of one’s own psychology. Elden Ring changed my life, it is undeniably a true modern masterpiece, but now it’s irreversibly going to also be an easily digestible, drop-in-from-the-battle-bus hero-“shooter” with more than a dozen gameplay tropes you’d also find in Fortnite and every other live service game out there. It’s not a flattering look and quite honestly it’s a disgrace to the original. Had this been the same concept but instead accompanied by a new IP set in a new location with new designs and characters, it would’ve landed much softer - but it probably also wouldn’t sell as well, which very clearly is the main and frankly the only apparent point of this release.

    I'm going to enjoy it and have a ton of fun with it, but I would be lying if I say that I don't find the reuse of the Dark Souls bosses a bit distasteful.
    I know those are high-quality assets and reusing them is more efficient, but it makes wonder, doesn't Elden Ring alone already have a lot of high quality assets to use? Why not use only things from that IP? Doesn't Elden Ring have a metric ton of cool and iconic bosses already? Why bring Dark Souls again?
    That's my only main problem with the game, because it seems the only valid answer to those questions is a shameless and blatant milking of an IP😕
    And Fromsoftware was supposed to be above that...

    I love roguelites and i love Souls games so i'm VERY intrigued by this concept. I understand people having reservations because it isn't a "true" Elden Ring 2 but it's still great to see FromSoft trying new things. As long is it doesn't take until 2030 until we get another "traditional" game from them i'm more than happy if they explore different genres.
    Edit: The concept of having a set amount of days to get stronger, gathering gear (or skills) and doing your best to get as strong as possible to face off against the bosses sounds a lot like Ravenswatch, another Co-Op roguelite that came out a few months ago. Highly recommend trying that out, it does get a bit repetitive after extended play since there's not a lot of variety in bosses or enemies but still great fun.

      @flamingmanure You don't seem to have ignored me. So I will explain if you are interested. We can see many familiar assets from Elden Ring in this game, both environment models and textures, and character models, be it players or NPCs. This is presumed to be sold as a standalone game but it has it's assets already made years ago. How much effort is put into this game's world and it's original content? It doesn't seem like anything comparable to the shadow of the erd tree dlc. So this is why I used the words "lazy cashgrab". It feels like it's a very rough and hastily made project. It feels like they wanted to make something new but didn't want to spend time on building a new lore for a new game. It feels like they are using Elden Ring's name to kickstart another project without putting any effort into it on it's own, just like disney used mandalorian season 2 to kickstart book of bobba fett, ashoka and whatever else they tried to ctrl+c-ctrl+v. I would prefer Fromsoftware to spend time and resources on making the next big project be it a DLC, sequel or a new IP. I feel like if this spinoff will be a flop they will lose the momentum that they earned with Elden Ring, AC6 and shadow of the erd tree, and less people will be there when they release something that fromsoft fans expect from them. You disagree - more power to you. You are interested in this game - I'm not here to take that from you. I've expressed how it looks to me, and why specifically I am not conviced that I should spend my money and time on this game.
