As a quick reminder, I'm not here to argue who is right and who is wrong. It's to talk about how the very act of developers that represent the hard work of huge teams fighting over hot-button issues is bad and hurts those games and teams. In other words, please don't judge Avowed by the words of one dude. Also, regardless of "drama", I personally really enjoyed Mouthwashing and reccommend it.

Literally. It's so ridiculous how tourists behave as if DA wasn't always queer and "woke". Krem being trans was like 99% of his whole character in DAI just like the blacksmith couple in Denerim in DAO were just "the gay couple".
I just didn't play it because it looked like @$$, the combat looked ridiculous, the writing sounds horrendous and Anthem and Andromeda had put me off the whole thing already.

@bluestarkiller i dont think sexual preference is the issue. The well written Dorian storyline is a better comparison to Taash than Krem. But even then the Qun, as presented in DAO and DA2 didn't seem to have much room for "alternative" lifestyles. Krem was more oh an "ohhhh okay" moment, instead of the seasoned warrior Taash coming off as a teenager finding themselves.

I could never try Inquisition because I heard it was the Andromeda of Dragon age and I definitely didnt want that to be my introduction to it.
Also completely agree,to me the Mass Effect OT felt like travelling around with the most badass soldiers and mercs ya could get while Andromeda had me feeling like I was driving a school bus of highscool kids around. The tone was so different. The game felt like it was made for a much younger audience other than the fact that they amped up the sex scenes compared to the older games which is a weird mix

No, games should not be "for everyone". games should be for anyone who wants to play them. A game for everyone is a game for no-one. This is why I don't really like the "upper management" cop out when it comes to why every game sucks now. I have no doubt that upper management at many dev studios and publishers force terrible monetization schemes that make games less fun, but many AAA games have been creatively lacking and unenjoyable regardless of monetization and the fact that so many devs publicly admit to prioritizing their personal politics in the games the make is a huge reason why these games are just not fun.

  • @ShurueViridian

Seeing this rot inside Obsidian really makes me sad. They've been one of my favourite studios for nearly two decades at this point. Beyond that, the idea of "fandom" has always puzzled me. People liking the same thing doesn't automatically give them common ground. Different people like the same things for different reasons. Sometimes those reasons are even directly oppositional to each other. Tying into that, I have a hard time trusting that a product will live up to my expectations when its focus is on being accessible to as many people as possible. I don't like it when the audience is the focus at all. I'd rather the art be the focus for it's own sake. A game that is attempting to hit all the trendy tropes to capture as broad an appeal as possible isn't nearly as interesting as a game that has a genuinely ambitious scope with a myriad of features that all tie into one cohesive and unique experience. It's the difference between The Witcher 3 and basically any Ubisoft game from the last decade.

Game devs using social media to incessantly MOAN about the customers who don't share their social beliefs are probably the most emotionally unhinged and immature people I have ever seen. If I ran a studio, I would institute MULTIPLE policies barring any employees from talking about the project, or the industry as a whole, so long as they are working on an un-released project. It is the MARKETING TEAM'S job to MARKET THE GAME. The devs should shut the f*ck up and do THEIR job, which is DEVELOPING THE GAME.
This is very simple, and NO, "freedom of speech" does not permit people to say what they want without consequence. That is a myth. Freedom of speech means you cannot be charged with a crime for speaking your mind in a public forum - that does not mean your company can't FIRE you for saying something stupid while you directly represent said company.
Publishers and studios need to tighten their grip on devs who use their social media outlets as a form of therapy. Letting these un-medicated people jabber about social issues that 50% of their customer base disagrees with is simply irresponsible, because the truth is that CUSTOMERS pay the bills, and it's very easy for them to be directly responsible for getting game studios shut down, and for talented people to lose their careers as a result. Don't poke a bear and then complain when it bites your head off.

Like, imagine you work really hard to perfect a skill so that you can pursue a career. You went to uni for it or you took courses and spent hundreds of hours to make sure you are as good as you can be. And it pays off, you get hired at a big company, working on a product that you think is really good. You cannot wait for people to experience the product that you have worked hard on, and also worked hard to even be a part of.
And then someone like Matt comes in and spews his garbage on the internet. Your work will not be appreciated by many simply because of the words of one dude. You might risk losing your position because your project does poorly as a result of the words of one dude. But also if you happened to be say, a person of colour, now you're a prime target for the real bigots. They will now say that you don't even deserve your position, that you just got there because of your skin colour. This could even make you yourself think that you aren't actually good at your job, that you're just there because you happened to be a certain way.
There is just simply no good that can come out of situations like this. The hateful people will be even more hateful, and the more rational people will feel pushed away because they don't want to support smth made by a mad dumbass. The project is more likely to flop, employees are more likely to lose their job, and a group of people might even lose their motivation outright.

It's one thing to aim your game towards a specific audience.
It's another matter when you're publicly hostile and hateful towards audience that you arbitrarily decide is "not worthy".
And for works that aim to have some actual social impact, for example by presenting complex or uncomfortable topics, this approach is counterproductive, in that it can have an opposite effect than desired.
You want to increase acceptance of trans people with your game? Great, just make sure not to chase off people who are already not accepting of trans people. The advice about blocking something you don't like and moving on is very good in the sense that you cannot control other people, only yourself, and not wasting you time and energy on being upset about such things is very healthy. Feeling upset is valid, but most people are better off by not engaging more with it and just moving on.
I think making art about an existing game is legitimate as long as yu keep it in the proper places for it. There are most likely assholes who want to explicitly hurt people with what they are doing, and those people should not be treated with caution because that can badly hurt a community, but some people use such things to work through their own experiences and trauma, and they shouldn't have to put it all on the table beforehand. And of course, as statet in the video, some people just see a character they vibe with and don't know the context, no thoughts or intentions found there, at least not in regards to that specific context.
In that light I can definitely understand that the response of the developer would be: "Don't like it, don't engage with it, don't gatekeep." But I can also understand that one of the members of the team would feel dread over Asmondgold followers finding the game. I used to watch him, but haven't in a long while, and I think I remember him saying at some point that he tries to make his content in a way that doesn't push away angry and lost viewers and the likes who others would get rid off, because he feels like excommunicating them would only radicalise them more, and giving them someone with clear opinions that may make them think about their lives is more effective. And while I think the stance is a valid and even somewhat noble one, that means that, if this has stayed true, his audience is full of people who will miss nuances and points and have some very questionable opinions on things, and dealing with such things does, indeed, sound extremely tiring and exhausting. You could still argue that you shouldn't make a comment about it on twitter for a multitude of reasons, But at least I don't think it is unreasonable or contradictory.

The point you made about artists / employees being representatives for companies; I think the majority of people do not understand to what degree & latitude that it applies. So, if a company has any kind of policy regarding social media, taking to media (reporters, news, publicists etc), then by the sheer act of allowing them to continue without hindrance compared to a nonemployee, means that the company gives implied consent for that employee to act as a representative. They do not have to directly tell the employee that they are being a company rep. An example of how much power that a company rep can have; A company tells an employee to go to an event for the purpose of making new business connections or customers. The boss of the company tells the employee that they are 'to do whatever it takes to get new customers'. The employee goes to the event, and proceeds to make verbal contracts or written contracts that are highly disadvantageous to the company. The boss, when he learns about these new contracts, then tries to say that the employee did not have the authority nor power to make such contracts & whatnot. From a legal stance, the employee was sent for the purpose of the business, wearing company clothes, company media materials, etc. They are a company rep, and those contracts the rep made, are legally binding.
Being a company rep has inane power and huge influence. As mentioned above; if the studio has a social media limitations written into the employment contract (I think nearly ALL contracts have some version of this, even fast food places do it), then allowing it to continue unabated is equivalent of consent. If one of their employees started going off on super hate rants on twitter, how long do you think it would take for the studio to step in and try to silence their social media accounts? Or even just fire the guy to sever all ties. If there is a penalty to posting one thing, and not posting others, then the company has demonstrated it's ability to exercise those social media limitations in their contract. Thus, the whole 'an employee's views are their own' falls flat immediately.

At this point I have a 0 nonsense policy when it comes to this stuff.

Like the Dev of Little Goody Two-Shoes that started running his mouth during pride month. there was no reason for it. the game was not even "woke" it's an homage of 90s CLAMP style yuri anime with zero "modern audiences" messaging. Now people just assume it is woke slop because the dev himself is trying to "market" it as if it is also telling people not to buy it.
I keep seeing more and more devs sabotaging their own sales and its pure insanity.

Yeah, I don't give 2 craps about someone's personal politics. But when they broadcast it, and further inject it directly into the games they are making, which is exactly what several of these folks are doing, now I judge them and the product accordingly. They have no one to blame but themselves. Their actions, their consequences.
If I were on the board of investors at Microsoft, and saw the Art Director of Obsidian killing Avowed in real time, I'd begin a lawsuit that day. Also broadcasting and advocating illegal hiring policies.

I don't disagree with the idea that games should be for everyone, the problem is in the finer details though. It's been said before that "A game for everyone, is a game for no one" and in some capacity that's true. In a lot of ways Veilguard has been watered down compared to previous entries, the "edge" sanded off, and while that may make it more palatable, it also alienates a group of people that wanted the darker, bloodier story. For me personally, I'd rather a developer find their category(ies) of game that they want to develop, really hone in on that, and push it to the world. Rather than send out a game that feels as generically applicable as a bethesda game, with the same shallowness of depth.

I really believe that as the years go by, the concept of gaming studios being placed on a pedestal will die. More and more we've seen once amazing devs who have seemed unstoppable get destroyed, Why? Because studios consist of individual people. The same guy that made the dialogue you love in your favorite game probably left the studio and was replaced by someone less stellar. Or the guy who made the best combat mechanics probably got fired for one reason or another.
Studios can only get 4-5 games out before they ultimately start turning sour. Because the people who made those initial bangers are simply gone. The only exception to this rule are Japanese devs as they have an insanse loyalty aspect to their jobs and small indie studios.

Games don't have to be for everyone. Not everyone is into the same genres after all. It is often better to make games only for the target audience than to water down an experience in the hopes of getting people who are not currently interested in the game. Trying to please everyone is a recipe for pleasing no one after all.

It's weird and stupid how these people can just attack their potential customers and encourage them to not buy their games because it's not for them anyway AND not getting fired in the process. I have seen others being let go for something less(like having a different opinion/ideology) and they don't even attack customers, just respectful disagreements. The devs are willing to cover up those people because they have their right opinion(aka as long as it aligns with them) above all else.
    Let them sink themselves.

As someone who doesn't play Dark Souls... No, you absolutely can make a game intended to filter out certain audiences. As a fan of the Warhammer 40K IP, you can absolutely filter out people who want to try to pervert the setting. Making media for everyone is making media for no one.
That being said, these developers who keep trying to exclude an entire ethnicity or gender need to be removed before they poison the well too deeply. I actually didn't like PoE1 and PoE2 much as games, but I did enjoy the IP a lot and bought all of the DLC. I was actually looking forward to Avowed for over half a decade at this point... but how Obsidian is acting on social media has forced me to flag the game as 'Ignored' because I am developing Pattern Recognition from Concord, Dustborn, and Failguard and realizing that this game I was waiting for is probably just... not going to be worth my investment.
I play video games to explore interesting settings and interact with interesting characters. I'm not playing them to be talked down to as if I were a child from people who somehow have less life experience than I do while wearing the skin of a franchise that existed long before they even picked up a pen.
