Also once you have the basics down - don't forget about reading and potion craft. In fact don't try to min max. I'm pointing out people seemingly refuse to engage with the system as it is and just exploit it since *its hard* or they don't care to learn it.
I promise you it's more fun to engage "properly" with it than just exploit it cuz its hard in the beginning and only using swords cuz they is cool or whatever.
I feel this is more or less what sooooo many people did with the whole game when it came and why people hated on it so much, "I can't do anything in this game, it sucks!" but they never really tried to play the game as it is just as play it as they expect it to play/how other games are played.
I think that's why i have seen so many videos like this where people come back to it and actually try to play it as it is and they love it even with its issues, im not saying its for everyone but outside of games that has gotten large overhauls and did not function at all on release i haven't really seen another game so hated turn around with not much change at all and people loving it later.

I think that choice will only affect dialogue unfortunately. They have stated that Theresa wont be in the game really at all, which makes sense since she would have no reason to travel to Kuttenburg with Henry so I hope there is some expanding on that relationship. My experience has been so similar to yours, down to hating masquerade and enjoying A woman's lot. I, too, got the Johanka trial subtitles at the end! 😅
For me, the game's biggest weakness, and one that you haven't touched upon, was the incredibly underwhelming story missions. Don't get me wrong, the set ups are great. Feels epic. But then, the missions are so quick and mind numbingly simple. I truly hope the studio was able do more with the sequel's main story missions.

Personally, as much as my opinion doesn't matter, I really enjoy the combat mechanic until you're fighting more than 2 opponents.
With 2 I feel it's still more than manageable to position the enemies where you want and you can easily change which target you attack and when. It's when dodging can be more useful than parrying.
However, it's when there's 3 or more I feel it's the lock on mechanic that really holds you back and not so much to combat itself. It's much more difficult to position yourself well and choose which target you're going to lock onto.

    • @NokayYT

And have you ever tried to go to the gym and box against two opponents at once (I understand that fencing gyms are not on every corner)? You'd be hard pressed to find a more grueling combat discipline! You're always on the move, always boxing, and you have to watch both opponents at once and react to them all the time - in a minute of such a fight you're gasping for breath and falling on your butt totally exhausted...! Trust me - against reality this game is very forgiving. 😉😊

It takes a long long time to master sword fighting in this game but once you do you will be unstoppable no matter the circumstances. Oh and one more thing…after you beat the game on regular mode be sure to do a hardcore play through…hardcore is where kcd really shines

Not only that but also a HUGE thing i see very few people talk about in larger discussion on the combat and how weak you can feel is that people seem to mostly use swords, and swords are the WORST option vs heavily armoured enemies.
When i play i always bring a sword and a mace, you can go for axe to have something in between but the difference the right weapon makes is huge.

As a KCD fanatic - and Souls veteran - the combat is beautiful and intuitive if you level up. You have to train at it, but that’s kind of how learning a skill works… Why would a random peasant automatically be god-tier at swordsmanship and immediately start cracking the skulls of experienced knights?
Also, it literally feels like sword fighting with the direction-based attacks and blocks. It felt very intuitive and way more fluid compared to Mount and Blade or Skyrim.
If there’s any hate that’s merited, it’s the jank lockpicking system. I bout near walked away after losing 20 lockpicks to the miller’s tutorial chest.

I’m on my third play through and never completely finished. Once Henry levels up enough where everything starts to feel too easy, I find myself missing the challenge of surviving as early, useless Henry and I end up starting over. My first half-play through was in normal mode and was only good for basic tutorial. That gave way to hardcore mode using a couple of the least inconvenient de-buffs. In the end, I quickly realized that I needed to start over with as many of the de-buffs as I felt I could stand. Brittle Bones, Bleeding, Tapeworm, and Numbskull should be automatic for hardcore mode. I only opted to avoid The Shakes and Sleepwalking to prevent unnecessary time wasting while the other de-buffs seem to bring the game closer to reality. This is what has me worried about KCD2. We can’t go back to peasant Henry, so are we going to be more like Bohemian Witcher?

    • @NokayYT
      @NokayYT  หลายเดือนก่อน

I would highly suggest finishing the game fully at least once with the DLCs! As for KCD 2, I dont think they will make him a peasant again because it wouldnt make sense, but I have heard that there is supposed to be a situation that is meant to be the canon reason why you have to start back at zero. Hopefully thats enough to give that sense of progression this game gives!

Reading the reviews on the Theresa DLC it seems like new players are too dumb to see the DLC Logo next to the speech option and wondered why they suddenly play as a woman and cannot get back. (I think they can go back, they just need to reload)

I mostly agree. I do think that even though there is the DLC logo, it should be made much more clear that you are about to start something as long as you are. Reloading is the most logical, but I do get that there is a good chance that they didnt have a save that was very close to that point, so it could result in a lot of lost progress. While I love the DLC, Warhorse definitely holds some of the blame for the issues people have, even if I personally disagree with them

Commenting here so it's more likely you see it I just watched your BG3 video where you gushed over classic Bethesda and I have to recommend two mods. First is Enderal which is a skyrim mod that is a complete game a little smaller than skyrim though large enough for me to put in over 60 hours.
The next is Fallout London though I'd recommend playing it second since it just came out and is still _very_ buggy. It's also slightly smaller than fallout 4 but on the same level as Enderal so expect another 60+ hours easily.
Both of these fan made projects have imo far better writing and characters than all the recent Bethesda games to the point that I was pretty blown away by what fans have accomplished and as a side effect I'm very worried about the quality of future Bethesda projects if Starfield wasn't enough of a bad sign.

When the game came out I finished it and held much the same opinion as yours, except that combat was something you just get through, frustrating though it may have been. In the past 6 years I switched my career into commercial game dev and am revisiting this game again more recently with the approaching release of KCD2. Playing on hardcore with all negatives to bring some additional grit to it but I was once again reminded how disastrous combat was. It's not that Henry is bad, or that the player is bad. Some combat design decisions ruined much of the complexity the entire system has. There's a mod for pc that fixes this very simply. Get "Better Combat and Immersion Compilation" aka BCAIC and try playing the game again.
BCAIC does a lot of tweaks but one major change brings about the true complexity and beauty of KCD combat: Master strike is only achievable if you're mirroring the direction the attack comes from AND you block the attack before it is launched (during chambering). Fail this timing and you do a regular block. This simple change means it's very hard for you to do a master strike and opponents will never master strike you unless you attack their active guarded direction (which would be completely your fault). This means you can completely avoid getting master struck, can actually do combos (perfect blocks and dodges still interrupt you but you don't eat shit for it), feints are just as useful and there's a massive improvement to the flow and longevity of combat.
Without it Henry will be dog-shit up until a point, and then all of a sudden he's indestructible (master strike typically being that tipping point) which hints at a design flaw in the system itself. With the mod, that flaw is addressed and you get to dip into all the various mechanics provided to reap their reward. Doesn't mean we've reached perfection here, there's plenty more room to improve with respect to HEMA and it's emulation in video games but I feel it's a necessary correction for KCD's native implementation.

I still don't understand the "controversy" around A Woman's Lot (though I have my guesses) - both main quests in it have some of the most memorable moments in gaming for me, and have stuck with me for years. Nothing in KCD is perfect or jank-free, but the key points and moment-to-moment gameplay are so good that it's easy to get lost in it. I spent almost 300 hours on my playthrough, and while I'm not sure I'll go back, I'm really excited for KCD2. As you said, it's such a good foundation that, even where KCD1 falls on its face on details sometimes - it's clearly a labour of love and has a lot more going for it than against it. Hopefully with more resources, they get even closer this time. Not expecting miracles, and hell, some of the jank is part of the charm - but it'll be great to see it live up to what it could be.

KCD2 will be everything KCD1 wanted to be but couldn’t because of limits, now it’s got a 100x bigger dev team it’ll be INSANE

22:54 its your fault. If you have good rep with those herbalist, they would brew it for you.

That makes sense, but still a pretty weird task considering how much time it takes otherwise. I ended up just going to a bunch of herbalists and buying out their stock until I had enough

I think war horse will be the next Bethesda. They're young enough to be ambitious, and they hit the jackpot on an incredible formula right out the gate. They're also not afraid to take their time to get their games right.

regarding lockpicking, i found reducing mouse sensivity while dealing with it to be the way forwards

yeah the melee combat was frustrating and non-fun. that's why I said fuck it and did mounted combat with a bow instead. you're literally untouchable and it bypasses the stupid hand to hand bullshit.

To me after a while I found some fun with the combat, but at first it is a bit stale

At first I used some- less than expected tactics and exploitation of enemy pathing to get my way. 2 bandits that were hunting down some ranch hand were kicking my ass, so I got up on a rock and just shot them with an arrow. Same thing with the first big quest of the game, where you track down a big camp and are supposed to sabotage. I had literally no stealth skill and knew nothing about the system in general, 3 tries later after stealthing around- I found out there's a spot in the camp they literally can't get to, and also just shot them with arrows. I stopped exploiting after that only because I finally got around to learning master strike, since any damn peasant could do it and I couldn't I would just get f'ed up. As soon as I got plate armor I was practically invincible, along with leveled defense skill you can become a god out of practically- only thing that would cause problems would be maces and polearms, if they had a sword they couldn't do anything unless they stabbed me in the face. Axes were common yes, but they were practically always woodcutters axes and just didn't do anything to plate armor with little to no blunt damage. The beginning is a heavy learning curve, but like any game you learn it- armor is SO important. Just some simple plate armor, whether it be a shitty stolen scrap metal chestplate or even body chainmail- which you can wear ALONG with plate armor. I didn't even move away from my kettle helmet until the end of the game once I got a free Italian basinet. Master strikes are nuts yes, but it is actually pretty hard to do until you get higher defense- if you have mediocre reaction time anyway. I finished the main quest in about 53 hours, I'd say the game for me since I have literally no DLC. I loved the experience and given I only got the game a week or 2 ago, I'm already lining money up for the second one. The story was everywhere for me, but god is the combat so satisfying for me- I've played mordhau and chivalry (1-2). They claim medieval combat, but this is proper in a way- even though some things may be a bit off. It's still enjoyable- I hope the 2nd is even more, especially given we'll be continuing as henry- wonder if we'll start by getting a lobotomization to justify our low skills again lol.

If you don’t do the Devil quest in Uzhitz you can go to Gertrude and have her make the potions for some reason.

combat issue is in how game explain it to the player,
example: if you want to master strike you need to watch enemy body starting the attack (before green shield start flashing) and react to that not to the green shield indicator itself
but when you learn master strike 1v1 becomes trivial
pribislavits dlc is basicaly get best horse or bow, and best shield or most harisma sword and food drier

I was wrong about this game too….. I got drunk with a priest, shagged a random girl with the priest, and then hosted Sunday mass hungover
    I’ve been sold since then!!!
Bought this game a year ago and was turned off by the combat. Kept dying, didn’t understand a lot of different things
Gave this game a chance again a week ago, and I can’t play any other video game now.
And I’m just getting started I guess 🔥

When i first bought this game i didn't put enough time into training witht he wespons and i was just completing quest after quest finially getting to the fight with Runt and getting stuck in an infinite die load sequence that i just couldnt win. Restarted and focused way more on training with the weapons. Fast forward to 2024 and im talking to a coworker who got stuck in that same load/die sequence i did but he thought it was a glitch and stopped playing. I told him start a new game and focus way more on weapons training. Low and behold a few days later i get a message saying he finally beat it. I think the one weapon i refused to use was the bow because i sucked at it

I wanted to be a noble knight not really a sneaky scoundrel. Especially on my first playthrough. Sadly without a guide I don’t think that’s possible. This is very much a you should let it happen game and the creators definitely want to lead you down a pretty intentional path. I forgot how restricting that feels in games.

I disagree if I'm honest. The game is very open even in its trailers that you're starting as a peasant who knows nothing and the game makes you build every skill from the ground up. Henry is a noble knight, just not the stereotypical one. He is able to be a part of the nobility with how important he is, but he feels much more realistic by holding onto those other aspects of his development.

The first thing the game asks you to do is steal something for the miller and he’s already trying to teach you how to pick locks. Then when you tell the guy you’re not interested he tries to make you feel like shit for not wanting to rob someone. I was immediately turned off by that being the first thing offered to you in a knights game. I was like what am I playing thief ? If I was interested in a ton of play throughs I would have a sneaky play in mind and maybe a chaotic run but I’m not sure I want to put in the time for a single run through. I’m also a little frustrated in the fact that this game masks its speech options and often the dialogue option you pick can differ than how it comes out.
