Forest Fire Is Nearly At Our Door!

- This video is a chronicle of our experience with the McDougall Creek Wildfire, from just before the fire grew substantially, when we were still trying to work through smoke to make it to our farmers market, to when the fire raged, and eventually to after the fire had died down. Due to the sensitive nature of this topic, we tried to treat the content as respectfully as possible. People lost homes to this fire, and it's those people who are feeling the affects of this tragedy more than anyone else. It would have been even worse without the brave and very capable actions of emergency workers and firefighters. Thank you for risking your life to save all of ours!
If you would like to donate to a charity that will help those affected by this fire, please consider donating to the Canadian Red Cross.

As of Sept 6th, the Mcdougal creek fire is still not under control (or held as the term is) The firefighters expect to be fighting it for weeks yet. Possibly til a season ending event such as fall rains or snow. I can still hear helicopters and will see one out my window occasionally. I look out my front window and see charred forest.
It was such a surreal experience. I started following your channel when we were looking at moving to Kelowna. We ended up buying on the Westside and had a pretty close call. We were evacuated and as we were going we saw flames coming down the hills on the side of the highway. The helicopters were staging outside our home flying just a few meters above the street. As the fire jumped the lake, my daughter's friend was only about 100m away. It is just so sad and as a new resident of the Okanagan, it brings it close to home.
In one of the areas there is a firefighting crew of 24 at least 13 of them lost their homes while they ere fighting fires in the area. Some didn't have time to take more than a standard 72 hour bag. No sentimental stuff, just the clothes on their back.
Another friend of my kids lost their home.
Crying with you.
God be with you all!
❤
I am so sorry!
I can relate a little. Just over a year ago we suffered a huge tornado, N. of our town in Eastern ON. An area which had lots of trees and not a lot of open spaces. The other day I drove through a section where it hit. When that happens, it is like driving through a war zone. Some people are still struggling. One house had a tarp on their roof for a year. It is now all open to the weather. Still shocks me when I see the devastation.
@@meandmysunshine1 Ooof yes. People will be recovering for years from this. We went to walmart the other day and there were still at least a half a dozen rv's in the parking lot there. I was just reading through an email from the emergency response and they are letting some people have temporary access to some of the areas still under evacuation order. Some of the rules were "do not open your freezer or fridge - it will be hazardous" We are not the only community affected by this by far. If you open up the BC wildfires app right now you are hard pressed to see a spot in the province that is not affected.
I am feeling incredibly lucky tonight that I am home and even though I am still on evacuation order, we can still go about life in somewhat of a normal way.
Im so sorry!!! I have been thinking about yall since seeing this video. This is just horrible and I wish there was something I could do. I hope yall are ok and Im praying that fire doesn't come close to your home. Praying G-ds comfort and peace upon you all.
This was such an emotional video. Thank you for showing us what you’ve been dealing with. The fires looked terrifying. Praying for your community.
omgomgomgomg Save the kiddies! 🧒 Save the kitties!
What excuse could the shop possibly have to keep your mower for 2 months?! You need to find a different shop.
Thank goodness for the rain!!! So glad you and your property are ok. Sometimes people just leave pets at home - so very glad you're not like that. Yay mom for welcoming ALL of you to her immaculate ready-to-sell home. Thank goodness you had somewhere to go that didn't involve traveling a ton of miles, and paying a fortune for a hotel room.
I hope this never happens to you again. No more fire, no more, close calls, no more bad air. Hugs and kissies for everyone, including the cats!
Love to the Kelowna community ❤
Boy do I understand the emotion. We’re on the north side of Shuswap Lake. Three communities west of us were evacuated and by the time we went on alert we couldn’t get out on the single highway off the north shore so we were sent two hours up a gravel logging road to Seymour Arm at 10:00 at night where we stayed for three days. Then finally they escorted back down past the 130 burned cabins to go all the way to Vancouver where we’ve been for 2 1/2 weeks. We head back tomorrow where our property is unburned thank goodness but have to once again go past all the devastated properties. It’s been quite the ride 😢
For anyone interested, the original fire on the west side of the city is still burning and classified as ‘out of control’. It sounds like there is a plan on how to get the fire under control but it is a long process as this fire has already been burning for several weeks. Concern for the safety of the community is not over but is reduced from where is was originally.
PS. I’m not a fire expert this is just what I’ve gathered from official websites: BC Wildfire Service etc.
Thank you for this insight, much appreciated.
Thank you for letting us know. I wondered what was happening.
We had several fires all around us in Eastern ON. Late June, early July. It was at least 2 weeks before they gained control. In August we had a lot of rain. That dropped our fire risk dramatically. BC and Alberta have been very hard hit.
Keep the roof and 30-40 feet around the buildings we’ll watered. This is so scary, I was watching all the news when I saw that it was close to you. So glad you’re all safe
PLEASE keep us posted on your family 😢😢 I cried right alone with you guys❤❤❤❤
So strange for the end of the video to have so much rain. It is relieving, but just not what we ever see in these videos. I'm glad everyone was ok.
Love from Australia. We went through this in 2019/2020. It completely changed how I look at fire. I honestly feel that it is not a question of if fire takes our house, but when. We're diligent about property maintenance, clearing gutters, mowing, having firebreaks etc... but the fire was so big that it created an enormous column in the sky that basically fell over onto a neighbouring town and wiped it out - the only reason it wasn't us was because of a last minute wind change. It was an enormous relief that we were spared but at the same time so devastating, knowing that people only minutes away had lost everything. Even though the fire didn't get to us in the end, it was a very traumatic experience. Unfortunately, one we are almost certainly going to experience again.
Oh I'm so sorry I remember watching it from here in Canada and being horrified.
We were lucky not to loose our home and were evacuated for several days (NSW South Coast). So dry at the moment, weather heating up, too much regrowth and predicted bad fire season it’s scary. Good luck to you, lets hope we make through another Aussie summer without devastation.
I feel for you, just lost my family home to the wild fires in Louisiana. It hurts 💔
I live in northern Alberta. And have a bunch of critters too. Their eyes got red and ore too. The song birds stopped singing. I have had a headache for weeks. Hang in their folks.
Oh you guys I'm so sorry!
So sorry for your experience. We have been watching from Australia,I do believe we have sent fire fighters to assist. We are now just into spring and have to be prepared for our summer which we have been told will be hot and dry. I love your channel and your flowers, from Melbourne
We were going through a similar situation with what was called the "Oregon Road" fire in northeastern Washington state. We were evacuated for 4 days, breathing hazardous air, and fearful that we would lose everything. In the end, our place was spared, but over 120 homes were destroyed. It was so so hard.
This was really scary to watch. Visually frightening. Hope the family, particularly the kids, are all doing well.
I worry for the future our children will see.
I’m thankful that no one died. Thank you for sharing your story.
I’m so sorry for everyone who lost their homes, livelihoods but glad no fatalities. ❤
Sadly, there have been some firefighters who lost their lives during this fire season in BC 😢.
😢my heart hurts for your family and all the people that have lost their homes. The ones that had to leave their family's to deal with the fires 🙏🏻❤🙏🏻
Oh golly this is terrible. We are experiencing terrible smoke from the fires in Canada. We are in Nebraska USA. Take care and may God protect your family and community
Barb, I'm also in Nebraska. I couldn't even see down the block this morning as the children were walking to school, and it's the third round of unhealthy air this year alone. Fires, floods, now the poisoning of soil in Mead and radioactive waste on the way to Elk City. The next generation deserves better.
Wow, the emotion and stress was obvious on your faces and in your bloodshot eyes. Being from California I absolutely understand what you were going through. I was crying right along with you and thank God you guys and your wonderful farm are OK. Better days ahead 🙏🏻 🌸 🌺 🐈 🌈
I’d be on board if they don’t cry wolf every podcast! What’s real??????
Glad to see you guys back home and glad you were prepared and left. Thankfully your parents were close by to go to.
😢 Living in NM and driving into the forests suffering from the fires over the years... My sister lost a house in a "controlled" burn. It's really heart breaking... I'm so sorry for all who have suffered loss.
I am so sorry your family is going through this rough season. I have watched every video since i found your channel , prioritize being safe. We are rooting for you!!!
My heart goes out to everyone affected by these fires. I live in northern California so I know how scary it is. Sending good vibes and hoping it gets under control soon.
I'm really grateful that the fires didn't affect your property. Sadly it has affected your community and that will take time to get restored. But thankfully nobody died so that's also good news.
I just can wish you a good recovery ❤
I was talking with family on the phone while watching the fire from downtown trying to reassure her that I would be okay because the fire won't jump across the lake. Then it jumped the lake. It was terrifying to watch how fast it moved with the wind. So many homes and property gone but amazingly no lives lost.
I hate these fires every year. I hope everyone gets their animals out like you guys 😢
We had smoke in pa from Canada fires for a total of 10ish days and it was miserable being out for more than an hour. My ❤ goes out to you guys! 🙏🏼 for some serious rain for you guys!
Blimey, what extremes in such a short period. You guys made my eye balls leak! So glad that you're all safe though, and that the rain was so timely 💚
Prayers to your family and surrounding community
Take strength from each other and know that you and your neighbours are in all of our thoughts and prayers. Stay strong.
I was so worried about you guys during the fire, I was pulling up fire maps and checking to see where your farm is in respect to the fire. I’m so glad you made it ok, but it is very sad that your community suffered such loss.
I did the same!! Checking fire maps, trying to find out if they are safe..
I did the same, then followed the fires in the Shuswap area.
Massive. Horrendous, still burning, but mostly contained.
These are likely to burn until the end of October! 😥
Hugs hugs hugs. I have known families devastated by wildfire in both CA and AZ. You did a great job working together to keep your family and kitties safe. I am also so grateful for first responders everywhere. 💙
I'm so happy you guys are safe and I will keep praying for Canada
i live in the deep south usa and never thought i'd be so happy for someone to deal with any component of a hurricane! i'm glad you all made it through the crisis ok and am sending energy and healing to your community.
Sending prayers to everyone there. It's so very hard to deal with wildfires, and to have drought. I'm happy to hear y'all are okay. You have family close, and you prepared the best you possibly could.
Like y'all, we've been dealing with the extreme heat. Our temperatures have been 103 to 117 degrees. Our heat index went as high as 132 degrees. Yesterday afternoon, someone welding a fence on a farm sparked a fire here on the south side of our old farm road. The winds picked up to over 50 mph blowing toward us. We were putting stuff in our vehicles, and getting ready to evacuate when all the local fire departments were able to put the fire out. We don't live in town. We live out in the coutry. Fire departments from outside towns (all volunteer) came to put out the fire. The fire was stopped.
Stay safe!
From fires to flooding… what a week. God bless you guys
Ian I cried with you! So sad for everyone. Praying all the fires are out!
thank you for sharing this.
happy the family and property are safe.
praying for the community.
We have all seen footage of the fires in so many areas of the world, but to see you all deal with it was very emotional. We are so glad you are all safe. The heavy rain must of helped. Thank you for sharing. I suppose we should all be prepared for any disaster that may occur.
My heart literally aches for you and for everyone affected by wildfires. 😢 I just can’t even imagine that stress.
Geez! Sorry for what you went through. I bet your first priority will be cleaning the brush around your property. Very scary!
Thinking of you all and praying …
This is Madness, cruel summer followed by torrential rain, hurricane, severe thunderstorm etc..
I hope you and family are staying dry and safe 🙏 ❤️
I'm so sorry your family had to experience this. I know from first hand experience that it's terrifying. I live in Northern California just over the ridge from Napa. We had the LNU Complex Fire here three years ago and had extended family evacuate to my home. I had friends who lived in Paradise during the Camp Fire in 2018. They lost their home and their business in one fell swoop. These fires are scary for both adults and kids. I hope you help the kids deal with their fear and confusion about the situation. Please know that we, your TH-cam Family, understand and will be here to support you and your family in any way we can. Stay safe ❤

Sending hope. Glass Fire Northern California .
So happy to see your family is safe.
So very scary and emotional.
Serina.. I am praying for you all. I'm so sorry to see this is growing. I am glad you guys got things in order and ready to leave when need be. Keep safe and we will be praying for you and keep us posted on your well being when you can and feel up to it. We all care about you guys ❤🇨🇦
I just noticed this video is more than few days older or so. I saw that Hillary was to rain on you guys over a week ago on a radar so I am glas it did infact rain👍 so glad your property has been safe!! And most importantly, YOU all
Oh no...prayers for your family and community🙏
I am so very sorry guys!!! Thoughts and prayers are with you.
Good one, Ian! 23 seconds in and I'm already tearing up. That's a first on your channel, if I'm honest. I'm off to watch the rest now, but I feel like I have to say how sorry I am already. God bless.
Thinking of you all the smoke from your fires was thick in Eastern Colorado today. Hoping for some relief and moisture for you all soon!
What a week you had. Praying for your community. So glad you all were safe.
What a damn shame. Seriously this is so devastating to watch. My prayers are with you guys.
My heart is shattered watching what’s happening to you all! Praying so hard it aches …
I am so glad you are safe. I wish the same for others in your community in the coming days and weeks without their homes.
I am so glad everyone is safe! This summer in Greece we had so many fires until now. And this week we have floods in many cities.. so many animals and trees burned that is breaking our hearts. So happy you took the cats with you! I hope you are always safe!
Glad you guys are ok. Stay safe!
Well done. I learned so much about fires and the various nuances of evacuation and the progress of the advance of fires. Great documentation. Scary as all get out. So sorry.
So devastating! It's amazing how priorities can change so quickly, from "Can we be prepared for the farmer's market?" to ""What will we find when we return?". Still, you have to make a living....hope there are emergency funds available in your province.
I am impressed by how you cope with whatever comes your way.
I've been thinking of you guys, searching for info on your area and update videos from you. Praise the Lord your fam, the cats and the farm are okay! The Lord says do not be afraid and in all things give thanks. One thing we can thank hurricane Hilary for, perhaps. Take care and God Bless.
Well, that was scary! Glad you, the kids, the kitties and the farm are safe.
We are praying for you and your community❤ and thank god for Hillary! 👍
We have been having spring and summer temperatures months ahead of time in Australia, so we are going to be in for a bad fire season. It is incredibly anxiety provoking that the fire season is getting longer every year.
So thankful neither your family or any other has lost their lives in this horrible wildfire! 💖
Very sorry y’all’s smoke and fire situation. Praying for your family’s safety.
Sending prayers for the safety of your family, home and city!
I am so sorry for everyones loss and terror. Lots of prayers needed.
We lost our home and workplace in this fire. 😢 living day by day….hugs to everyone
Great video. Thanks for sharing this. I’ve never had to experience something like this, and it’s informative to see your family’s response to it.
Glad you and yours are safe! Wishing your community all the best for a speedy recovery from this tragedy.
Thanks for sharing such an emotional time. We're glad that you're all safe and sound back on the farm
My heart goes out to you and your community. So much loss.
Thank you for sharing this. My heart breaks with you. Keep safe. My prayers are with you.
I am so glad you are all safe!! God bless!!❤❤❤
My heart goes out to you. I live in Oregon and we have huge summer fires so I can related to what you are going through. Keep us posted. We all worry about our northern neighbors!
So glad you are all safe, thank you for highlighting and sharing your experience with us all. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Prayers for you & yours from Kansas. Had our disasters too from time to time & bounced back. If worse comes, so will your rock strong family!
Praise God for that rain! Glad you are safe and well! I pray your community will help each other❤🙏
Prayers for you guys and everyone involved. 💜
Hurricane Hillary!
It killed me when you were crying Serena! I was getting emotional too. You are always such an upbeat person. Even when things are not going well. You are still smiling....never crying. Then your cats were crying and then Ian!
Thank God, you're kids took it all in stride.
The pictures you show are horrendous.
So scary. I am glad you are all ok, but still terrible for the people who lost their houses.
Eileen🍁🇨🇦💞
Been thinking about you guys after watching the news. Stay safe. Lots of ❤from Alberta 🇨🇦.
Hugs and prayers to your family and people in your area from Denmark 🙏🙏🙏
Father protect this family from the fires and help all the brave firefighters put an end to this beast.
This was hard to watch without getting all emotional and teary too. So good to see the rain and you all home safe and sound. Heart goes out to your community. As an Australian and already getting warnings of a hot summer ahead, I dread the prospect of fires.
I am so thankful you all are safe. This video made me cry. Praying for Canada 🙏
Sending prayers for everyone going through this... stay safe everyone
Praying for your safety and emotional strength . This has been a long, tough summer. We have smoke in our state today, also from Canada. We are so aware of all the suffering the fires have brought to our Northern neighbors. Hang in there. Hug your kids. May the Market bring good yields and cheer everyone up! linda from NE
thank you for sharing. It is unimaginable for many.
I'm glad you are all safe. What an awful thing to have to deal with. What a welcoming rain! ❤
So grateful no one was hurt. Thoughts are with you and your community. ❤️
So thankful you are all okay. My thoughts are with your community during these hard, hard days.
So glad your home and farm were spared! Take care! 🌸🌸🌸
I’m so thankful you guys are safe.
You delt with all the dramas really well and I'm so pleased you came through as well as you did.
Anyone reading this and wondering why there are so many fires may like to check out whether a smart city/ fifteen minute city is planned for the area. It's not something that is being advertised widely but a dig into council plans may be quite revealing.
Thanks for documenting ❤ glad you are ok.
Oh, you guys. I am so sorry for everyone in your area. So glad that no one was killed.
Every once in awhile you get a reminder of how fragile and precious life is. And how in just a quick moment life changing events can occur. (For me, it was a cancer diagnosis in early 2022, though today I've been in remission for about a year.) So glad you're all safe and your home and business are intact. Hoping all your neighbors who weren't as fortunately get all the love and support they need and deserve and find the strength to recover.
