What I have been doing since the quarantine started has been pairing books with their audiobooks if available and reading along at 1.5 to 1.7 speed. It's helped train my focus, mental clarity, and comprehension tremendously. I've read 25 books in the past 5 months because of it. Now, when I read books without the audiobooks I read them in a week whereas it used to take me at least a month before. I hope that helps!

Ah, so many of Jenn's recommended books have been in my to-read list forever! I just don't have time for more reading, especially since I'm in a modern Japanese literature class. Maybe after the semester ends.
If anyone is looking for some Japanese classics (in translation), here are the books I'm reading for my class:
    1. Kokoro by Natsume Soseki (translated by Edwin McClellan)
    2. Naomi by Junichiro Tanizaki (translated by Anthony H. Chambers)
    3. Silence by Shusaku Endo (translated by William Johnston)
    4. The Woman in the Dunes by Koko Abe (translated by E. Dale Saunders)

I just finished reading “A Blistered Kind of Love” by Duffy & Angela Ballard. It’s written by a real life couple who decides to put everything on pause and challenge themselves as individuals and as a couple to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. They’re not your average experienced hikers either so it was cool to follow their journey. The ways their relationship gets tested was relatable and I loved how they mention all the “characters” they meet on the trail + little bits of history on parts of the trail they hike through. It was a fun read and definitely left me with inspiration!

I don't feel like many people in this comment section are too familiar with it from what it seems, but I wholeheartedly believe that psychedelic treatment will be the future for many mental diagnoses and also end of life therapy also. Really liked the recommendations! But I'd like to add that social psychology more generally suffers from the replication crises. The book mentioned a study about the relationship between social media and suicides in females. This ended up not replicating in different contexts. It's more like a bidirectional relationship: people who are sad tend to use social media more. Haidt has since updated his opinions!

I recently finished 'How to change your mind' and it was so well written. It was not the main point of the book but I personally liked the part he describes all the people he met. They were so vivid that I felt like I could spot them if I have a chance to meet them in the street!

I’ definitely have to recommend The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern, it starts with university student finding a mysterious book that somehow had a whole section about his life and evolves into stories within a story . It’s very rich in details and honestly the imagery is very very amazing.✨✨

That first book sounds a little like the one I'm reading now - Factfulness by Hans Rosling. It's all about how we have been trained to see the world in a negative light, when in fact in almost every area life has improved and continues to do so around the world. He inserts graphs and figures in a really interesting and easy to understand way. Highly recommend!

Song of Achilles is definitely one of my favourite books of all time. I’ve never felt more connected to the characters and it makes that ending even more heart wrenching! Jenn, thanks for such an informative video! I've been searching for books to read and now I've got five of them thanks to you :D. There is a book I want to recommend to you and the title is "please take care of mom" by a South Korean author Kyung-sook Shin. The main storyline of the book is trying to find mom who is lost and has alzheimer's. and it really contains and shows a lot of Korean sentiments of the era where the story based on. You will realize that the book is very emotional and heart-wrenching time to time along the way as you read it. It made my appreciate and love my parents more after I read it. Anyway, that was my two cents of book recommendation and I hope you have a wonderful day :D

Jenn, I recommend that you read Eat a Peach by David Chang!! David Chang is not only someone I look up to as a chef but also as someone who's really helped me rethink how I approach things. You'll laugh and you'll cry (seriously, just thinking about some moments is making me tear up already) and will really make you think about success. 10/10 would recommend.
Also! Interested in Convenience Store Woman because that's a very interesting life view that hopefully I can understand. My husband and I are pretty driven but we aren't hardcore A-types anymore. However, we do like to push ourselves and can't understand friends who don't want to "do better". Thank you for sharing!!

I have a strong feeling that you might have read these positions, but still it’s worth to share. Here it goes! First is Island by Aldous Huxley which is a novel about a dystopian island where ideal society has flourished and the second is One of Us by Åsne Seierstad which a non-fiction book about 2011 Norway attack done by Anders Breivik. Hope you enjoy if you have not already! Highly recommed these two ☺️

I’m really enjoying the Neopolitan novels. It’s a 4 part book series by Elena Ferrante translated from Italian. I started with My Brilliant Friend and am hooked. I find her writing style so eloquent. It’s about two girls in impoverished Naples growing up first based in the 40s and how their lives were taken down very different roads. One just effortlessly good at everything, the other had to work for it.
I also recommend Why we sleep. Is full of interesting studies on why we actually sleep. Animals can go several days or weeks without food, but sleep deprivation of just one or two nights has such a detrimental effect on health I was shocked! Such a great read.
