Got to respect these guys. Once they reached total global popularity, they didn't use that platform to milk the same cow every year. Instead they went back to their roots and gave their old game a new look. Very inspiring.
The game being shorter and replayable is actually a good thing for me. I’m getting kinda sick of every game having a 60+ hour story. I could easily grind through those as a kid, but now that I’ve got responsibilities and shit, I just don’t have the time. Short, sweet, and replayable sounds amazing.
I'm in the same position. Probably why I'm not going anywhere near 70 hour RPGs anymore. I'd rather play a fun exciting solid 20 hour game than something that is stretched out to fill the 70 hour requirement. But to be fair I don't want to face the same boss 8-20 times because it can one shot me, either. Kind of tired of badly balanced games with easy minions and over the top bosses.
The whole thing with NG+ giving new things to do is a very classic AC thing. Hell, the first AC had a whole system for going into debt, and you could be put so deep into debt that you're forced to sell your body to military science. This caused a full reset of your campaign progress, but you also got a permanent buff every time you "failed" and got new dialogues and I think a couple missions, too.
AC1 giving you entirely different missions based on chrome or murakumo loyalty too which was basically invisible and you only really figured out after finishing once. Looks like vi is going the For Answer way of the other endings giving extra context or missions for different sides to the conflict
@@rafaelrugama4194yeah they started doing this partway through the series, which saves some hassle but did away with the mystique of finding out about it yourself. Plus, going human+ limited you in some ways and wasn’t always advantageous.
I know a lot of people view a game being linear as a downside. But i would rather have 10 - 20 hours of almost nonstop fun over a 60 - 100 hour game with only a few high points and the rest being forgettable.
Couldn’t agree more, some games benefit from a large open world (and it’s nowhere near the amount of those games we get). But most games can benefit hugely by being focused linear experiences
Indeed sekiro, doom eternal, malicious, dmc etc there are plenty of REALLY good really fun linear games out there that focus hard on mastery of combat with very little parkour and exploration in between A short game even like 10 hours can sometimes be the game where you put the most hours in cause you simply replay it over and over to the point where you can get 200 hours in meanwhile a long game after you finish 1 playthrough after 100 hours you really don't wanna replay it cause of how slow it can be "not all long games feel like this prime examples are elden ring, Zelda or mh" A great indie example is bleed 2 that's like 2 hours long maybe less yet I played it for like 50 hours or more trying to master speedruns , higher difficulties , characters , weapons etc
That's why I prefer DS3 and Sekiro to Elden Ring. Elden Ring is the best open world game ever made but most of it is still relatively boring compared to polished to perfection linear corridor
So far I'm enjoying the respite in difficulty between boss fights. Blasting through the swarms of low-level enemies helped reinforce the power fantasy I want from a badass mech game. I'm happy From Soft isn't making me have to work for it 100% of the time.
AC in that world also considered an absolute war machine that normal ML and LC can't even hope to win against them, even the NPCs fear for their life and shout "how can we beat an AC we stand no chance"
I mean, would it be that hard to appeal to both though? Could always have the enemies be really easy on the lower difficulties and make them an actual threat on higher ones.
@@100organicfreshmemes5 it would make no damn sense. It would be like a game where you play an Abrams tank, and you get killed by two squirrels because you set the difficulty too high...
I think the "shorter, boring" missions are there for pacing and to build an experience of a corporate mercenary, there won't be big, bombastic fights every time you go into your mech, so you have to take these missions for the extra dosh either way for that shiny new part in the shop there. Money is money after all
I actually really enjoy the side missions it's a much much needed break from the teeth grinding stress inducing adrenaline gushing boss fights it's very much needed to get some easy missions to not feel like a complete chump in and they are great for grinding money without clicking your jaw for 10 mins lol
Seems like they're testing the waters. Armored Core made it into the top 4 for highest concurrent player count for the year on Steam. They'd be crazy not to make another one.
I’d bet that Fromsoftware is going to be making more games like this for a while. They’ve been working on the Souls genre for over a decade without really doing anything else. Games like these that are much shorter that have shorter dev time might be the way to go for Fromsoftware.
Even tho there's a narrative that ends (wont spoil/I'm still playing) I would be surprised if this games gets a couple DLCs that expands misions and equiment variety. I think that I missing is having a set of missions where you "invade" some industrial plant/whatever and then you're tasked with defending it, so areas that were a pain to advance become your shooting grounds while areas that where easy become much more challenging.
"By X point in the game, I wasn't even thinking about the controls." As a longtime AC player, that's great to hear. Back when I was super into AC3, it really felt like you were having to fight the mech to get it to do what you wanted to, no matter how close I felt to pure muscle memory, I just never got to that point. The downside to that is that the game always felt difficult, but the upside was just how accomplishing it felt to finally beat that mission or arena opponent I'd be struggling with. The sweat on the controller and my brow, the way I'd feel almost winded at the end of an encounter was so immersive. The less than ideal controls really made it feel like I was controlling something made of a bunch of different parts I was having to make work. I know I'm probably sending a lot of mixed messages, but Armored Core is a mixed message itself. You're living this power fantasy, but the threat of debt (which I know isn't in this, but still) and knowing you aren't always doing the most ethical or moral thing really mirrors our world in a way you don't often see. I'm so psyched for AC6. It's preloading now.
old AC games had massive controller decks that cosdted hundreds of dollards and even had foot pedals . insane stuff. super immersiev. AC6 is such a departure lol@@introseeker
this shit needs a level editor or something, games where you can make loadouts that play entirely differently + level editors where the community can make interesting challenges that have niche "counters"/solutions are goated
There's choice missions you have to play through the game multiple times to experience all the missions and all bosses. You can't even unlock the true ending and final boss until New Game Plus 2.
@@Hypastpist Or at least as much as they did, bc if you mean level reuse the way I think you do, the stage for the tutorial mission is reused in at least 3 other missions
As a long time AC fan this installment is the new pinnacle of the series, and I literally wouldn't change anything at all. From Software absolutely nailed it!
I wish there was a coral energy pistol, or really any further expansion of the energy handgun. I mean that really is the only complaint of the game: I want more of every thing that’s in it, cus it’s all great
Personally I would add back the weight distribution parts system. Aside from having minor impacts on how your AC's function, they also add a cool bit of flair to up the rule of cool. I still see them in VI, but they're not customizable lol. Shame, I loved the customization most. Got into AC with 3, had a friend. That was my first taste. For Answer is my absolute favorite though. The Lahire setup for maximum speed and arial combat with shoulder gats and dual blades was my Anything Killer.
I've beaten every single one of these games at least twice this year, and I wanna let you know you reviewed this incredibly well. You explained the combat better than I've heard vets of the series do it. Somehow you got me even more excited than I already was. Great work Pineapple.
I haven't played every single game in the series. But I started with 1st gen when it came out and played them all. Then I played the ever living hell out of AC 2 for many years. Then eventually I played AC 4 and loved it, and Verdict day, and kinda, didn't. Metal Fruit's explanation of AC6, definitely got me more excited than I already was.
Wait, you really played all? The only one I never played is Armored Core:Mobile Mission since its a Jap flip-phone exclusive If you had already played AC:MM can you give clues where I can get the emulator version of it?
I really like how you can't upgrade weapons, it forces you to change up your strategy and keeps the game fresh, makes you find new loadouts, I was sticking with this cool duel pistol build for awhile and it was working great, I had to swap it up for chapter 2s boss cause I couldn't beat him, very fun game
Exactly but then after the game makes you change it up your new changeup doesn't work anymore and the thing you used before has a newer version or something else's peaks your intrest
Armored Core was my childhood, I spent countless hours playing, customising, then replaying with new gear, then unlocking even more new gear. The game was pretty ahead of its time in terms of customisation outside of an RPG and I am SO excited to see it make a comeback! Only a few more hours left, It's a shame I'm an adult now and will have to go to work first 😭
@@cabanasteve4752 I don't recommend this without some research into what can go wrong. When I worked support for Nintendo, we had mountains of problems that locale spoofing would cause. Largely problems which could only be resolved by refunding and letting them buy it in the right locale, but getting a refund was like pulling teeth. I imagine other consoles would be similar.
As a fan of the series from way back in the late 90's, I always kind of got the sense that AC didnt get as much praise as it deserves. Some of the most fun I had as a kid was playing the original and Project Phantasma, so its nice to see so many people enjoying the thing I've loved for so long.
Honestly, that's probably because half of them suck lol, and the ones that don't suck are usually mediocre. Silent Line and Last Raven are the exceptions, not the rule.
The classic Armored Core move is to release a quick follow up game that takes all the same basic mechanics of this generation of AC and gives you more varied situations and mechanical twists to explore more of what this version can do. In other words, I think you have good things to look forward to.
Usually. The follow up game comes with a Subtitle instead of a number. e.i. Master of Arena, Another Age, Silent Line. I don't think From soft would make a follow up to Armored Core 6 *Fires of Rubicon* rather than simply just updating the Game itself or adding DLC
@@thiccthighssavelives5866 Yeah, it's the only AC generation to start with a subtitle. that and it's numbered with a subtitle. releasing a quick sequel would be great for the tradition, but many people would be confused and think it redundant or "cash grabby".
I love how you can see the inspirations of different mecha anime in the different mech designs too, some are blatantly gundams, some look straight out of evangelion, and there's even some code geass in the mix from what I've played thus far. But they all feel like a homage to each of them. Helps that it's probably the best game I've played this year, easy GOTY contender for me.
Pushing missions to a ng+ allows the main story to end where it needs to without needlessly dragging out through filler missions. Its a really good call, and as was stated gives you an excuse to see alternate routes, experiment, and not feel like your time is being wasted.
plus if people end up wanting more AC6, fromsoft has always made several direct side entry sequels to the main numbered ones that continue that story in the same game engine. I'm sure they'll do that with 6.
I think what people are gonna get hung up on is how this isn't a slow burn story like the Souls games. It's more or less Ace Combat but with mechs so the story is gonna move at a break neck pace at times. The worst thing they could do is draw it out longer than it needs to. I think the ng+ move was the right call
I've played all of the armored core games in the years it came out and I have to say after trying this game I think it can easily be nominated game of the year for the story and overall combat mechanics. The mechanics are smooth and I can't wait to see if from software makes a sequel to this masterpiece of a game.
Welcome to the AC world Iron Pineapple! Started to play with this franchise in 97. I'm 55 year old now, and i'm still having a frigging BLAST with AC 6. It's nice to see an established name in the fromsoft fans community enjoying this franchise. Keep up with the good content!

You tackled the "one more time" mindset of Armored Core perfectly... it's not about the Perfect Setup™, it's more about the tweaking and management that you do until you finally feel comfortable with a setup that is truly unique to yourself.
So, I only got this game because of your videos. I must say, I have never been interested in Mechs before, but now I get it. It is so fun, and I understand the appeal now. Playing this has been very reminiscent of playing Ace Combat, or Star Wars Rogue Squadron as a kid. It's awesome to capture that same kind of feeling, but in a modern and approachable way. Kudos to FromSoft once again.
@@ronanbax6102I'm on my 3rd play through and the bosses are INCREDIBLY easy after you've got better parts from later in the game. On both ng+ and ng++ I first tried pretty much all of the returning bosses (and even some for new ones from the other endings.) Love the game, but compared to fromsofts other games in the last decade? By far the easiest bosses.

I wouldnt be surprised if AC6 is gonna get a 'for answer' like expansion offering a bunch of new story misions with more paths to follow and more hype moments that use the existing formula/foundation and focus on the best parts of it. AC series is kinda known for having pretty chunky additional content for almost every entry in the series. Silent line and for answer as mentioned prior kinda stood out for me, and I enjoyed both a lot for having made a good game even better.
@@fenrissilverfang8419 Much like how For Answer has an entirely different gameplay speed despite having MOSTLY the same gameplay design for the generation? @@pyroball602 4A was a pretty much a Gundam power fantasy, not that it was a bad thing but i can see why it wouldn't be for everyone. Good news is that Fromsoft started hiring for "Mecha designers" recently, so i'd say another year from now and we'll get a new Armored Core game trailer maybe even a little sooner, A year after that the maybe a new game? Fromsoft Works in cycles that you can track pretty easily if you look at how they hire, This process became easier after they started work on ER and AC at the same time as you could see the teams swapping from project to project. Given it has been 4 months since the ER DLC and that news of hiring for a new mecha game came out recently, it wouldn't be a surprise if they just started working on what's new for the series. So 9-12 months for a trailer and about 2 years for the next game? Could be wrong but a prediction based on past From games.
Great analysis! What I've always loved about the Armored Core series is that it's not about grinding, it's about finding the build that carries you to victory. Games like Elden Ring allow you to grind until you can brute-force the boss in your way, but Armored Core encourages you to tweak your build until you find something that works. My favorite approach is to build multiple ACs that are each specialized to different tasks. If one AC doesn't work, try another. If that doesn't work, then it's tinkering time.
Picked this up and played about 80 or so minutes so far, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm actually happy to hear you beat it in about 12 hours, because that sure feels like a solid enough length to me, and I'm kind of happy to play a game that's not 50+ hours for one playthrough after some back to back long as hell games.
Honestly with PVP and arena mode which is PVE there’s quite a bit of fun to be had after completing all the missions. NG+ in From games are usually were the real difficulty begins
9 months later, how's the game going for you? I'm a newcomer to the series, but since I play on a shitty potato, I emulated the old games. I found myself spending more time fucking around with my AC and doing the arena, than doing missions. Is this the same for you?
What I really like about this game is that there is no “best” set up. Because just when you think you have your mech set up PERFECT you’ll run into an enemy that shows you your limitations and you’re forced to adapt.
Too bad there are no gatling gun shoulder weapon for the dakkaest amount of dakka. I really want to recreate my AC from Last Raven where it dual wield machine gun with two machine guns as shoulder weapon. Too bad in Last Raven you cannot fire all your weapons simultaneously. But I can get a drone from my body which is nice.
Dual gatlings for constant pressure, dual grenade launchers for staggers, fast tank threads for greates mobility in weight class. Pretty much the inarguable best setup against AC bossfights. But yes, there is a variety of situations.
I think personally that the entire reason it feels somewhat smaller than some might have thought, is solely because From is gauging the interest of the fans before adding more for AC6. It's been a 10 year hiatus for the series, so they're probably taking a semi cautious approach to see if it's worthwhile to add more later on while getting the framework laid out. No it won't outsell Elden Ring, but for those of us who grew up on the series, it's one hell of an appetizer for what will hopefully become a phoenix like revival of a beloved mech franchise. Who knows, if this becomes a smash hit in time we may get DLC that will add in old features we Ravens used to love. (Coughcough gun arms, hover legs, ect)
It does seem like a very cautious return. I’ve never played an AC game in my life, but just from the footage I’ve seen today of AC6 vs the research I’ve done on the previous titles, I can tell From really dialed back some of the harder aspects of the series for this release. They’re definitely seeing who outside of the AC fanbase really jives with this “new” series of games.
I really hope this is a proper revival of the series and that they continue making AC games, because this game is so awesome!! I'm a newcomer to the series but man i already love it
It never gets old, and there's points to easily jump off. I find in open world games you play and play until you're sick of it or just wander aimlessly. With missions, you play until you're satisfied.
Pretty much spot on with the 8/10 reviewers give it, a lot of them are even saying "I gave it -1 because its about mechs" like somehow the topic of the game is a reason to reduce its score (though this happens with "J"RPGs too for not being made by Bethesda style "rpg") edit: I will say, this sounds a lot like Ace Combat as well. Which has that same feel as a mech game, because a lot of mech media is just the same as fighter pilots but they're robots.
I mean, sometimes the topic of a game is a downside, especially when it's a super overdone genre like medieval fantasy and they don't provide anything unique to it. Of course, it is absolutely not the case here, the mech genre is very much not oversaturated (though I can't say if AC6 brings anything unique to the table on this aspect until I play it).
@Darkprosper no yeah I get if they don't do anything new with a genre. The original comment just made it sound like the reviewers were saying mech=bad. If someone said "love this game, but it's fantasy so it gets 8/10" I'd also be confused
When it hits you... that both AC name sakes have been PSX games (except other AC games that people would know, something about parkour and assassins) and fan bases having some Non Credible overlap
I actually really enjoy the side missions it's a much much needed break from the teeth grinding stress inducing adrenaline gushing boss fights it's very much needed to get some easy missions to not feel like a complete chump in and they are great for grinding money without clicking your jaw for 10 mins lol
15 hours sounds perfect honestly. There are so many (probably) great games sitting in my backlog already so each one not requiring infinite time is a plus.
Some of my favorite games ever are 10-13 hours in length: Doom 2016 and Dead Space in particular fitting that bill. So 15 or 20 hours seems fine to me for a game like this, and I'll probably spend significantly more than that making sure I get a perfect score on every mission.
@@Rokomarn These kinds of arguments are so fucking dumb. Bro, it costs $15 to go see a 2hr long movie. My wife and I bought some Arbys last month, each got a burger and fries, 1 soda, shit was over $20. Peoples' dollar value ratio is so busted when it comes to video games. Not just that there's more to what makes a game valuable than just the amount of time it takes to beat, but even just that the amount of time you get for that cost is still on par, and oftentimes BETTER than other forms of entertainment/indulgences.
I was able to get this game early, and I’m getting the feeling that I might play this for years to come. I’ve spent four of my seven hours played in the garage, customizing decals, toying with parts and switching up paint jobs. I love this game.
I have to say: i think the ease of some missions is a matter of relief. Dark souls has a similar aspect with the tromp to the next boss: aside from exploring and random traps the difficulty isn't always high
weirdly enough, i feel like this game is going to be like those Ace Combat games. fantastic gameplay with high skill ceiling, fun levels and objective based mission designs. both offer a the power fantasy of piloting cool machines and spectacles.
The emphasis on variety is a HUGE selling point for me. A lot of the time I get bored with games due to lack of customization. Regardless of meta and efficiency standards, I like to mix and match and play around with wacky builds because often you come across unique niches and playstyles. Combine that with tons of fashion options not to mention freAKIN EPIC MECHA, I think this could be an absolute 720 between the legs slam dunk title.
An 8 for an ac game from IGN is monumental considering the previous titles scores. Regardless of mass appeal or lacktherof im so ready. Game unlocks in a few hours for me. Ive waited a decade. Very cool to see a newcomer click with the game! And a youtuber ive watched for a long time to boot!
I just finished chapter two and I'm having a blast with the game. I will say that it can definitely get overwhelming with everything that needs to be kept track of during combat, especially boss fights. I've mitigated this a bit by using only passive OST chip upgrades instead of even more attacks that I could do and by not using weapons that have a charge option to their attack. Even still, when things are tense and there's a lot happening on the screen, I'll often just mash my weapons not knowing if they are off cooldown or not.
Not just your wonderful breakdown and loving review, the background gameplay looks RAD AS HELL. It's rare that I become interested in a game just from how *COOL* it looks
15-20h of gameplay is honestly the sweet spot for me nowadays, even more so if there's also a lot of replay value. I just can't bring myself to play these 50 hours neverending story-driven games games anymore (unless it's Elden Ring).
10-20 is great for games with good replay value and solid gameplay that makes you want to keep playing after the credits roll. I remember a lot of people complained about Bayonetta 2 being like 9 hours but I ended up playing it for over 30 because once you beat it there's still new difficulties to beat, ranks to improve, new weapons to try out, an optional boss to beat, etc
It depends if you have lots of spare time or not, for people who are in school, working, or otherwise busy making the world a better place with their time and energy, a 15h game is pretty good. Most adults don't have time to waste hundreds of hours on a single game.
I gotta say, the most memorable fights for me were Ch 3's Worm, Ch 4's Ibis mech, and Ch 5's cracked ass V-II Snail. When the music stops followed by rusty saying "I wont miss" gave me literal chills, like straight out of a movie. my absolute favorite was the Ibis Mech, although super hard, the 30-40 times I tinkered with my mech while inching closer and closer to victory gave me an un-parralleled feeling of satifaction when I did beat him, SUPER enjoyable. Had me feeling like that japanese gameshow winner. HOOOOOO.
Having spent 84 hours on my *first* BG3 playthrough, I'm not concerned with the length. The sheer customization you have available to you is just crazy here and I'm excited to experiment.
The stagger damage meter is absolutely the best implementation from the souls series, in fact; EVERY element they imported from their flagship games have been so well crafted into this game, nothing feels forced or shoe-horned, everything they ported over from their other games just ‘make sense’. Great review dude
It's straight up the worst addition to the game. Along with ridiculously slow bullet velocity the stagger bar basically negates 2/3 of the weapons. Why run anything other than songbirds or earshots on your back along with a punish weapon for your arms?
I haven’t been this excited for a game in years. I lm glad majority of reviews are positive and no one is talking about any game breaking jank. A complete game is such a treasure in today world

I’ve been playing AC since the very first one, back when you could play multiplayer with 2 PS1s and a link cable, which we did in out first apartment with 2 huge CRT TVs and it was glorious. I realize that there probably aren’t many people around that have played them all at launch, so after watching the video, here are some comments: Multiplayer is phenomenal, and the longevity of the games for me was largely due to this. This was before online, so it was either split screen or link cable and was great fun at LAN parties. What I’d REALLY like to see is coop, as multiplayer was always 1v1 area fighting. Regarding gear… there is no “best”. Every single thing in the game has a use. You need to balance the stats. Legs need to support the rest of the Core, so you might need to get the dual small missile launcher vs the quad, or medium missile launcher. Weaker weapons can be faster, lighter, less heat, lower power draw, etc., which are all important if you want to make a mech that’s fast and dances around the range of other mechs. Heavier gear gives more AC points, more ammo, heavier munitions, but with that comes higher costs down the line. You can go full tank mode and get treads with dual grenade launchers and just outlast your opponent, or you can make a sniper with the fastest legs that can outrun targeting scanners. This is the best part of the game, imo, the absolute freedom to hand craft a Core that matches what YOU want, not just what’s “best”. The newgame+ type gameplay here is something they’ve done in the previous games. The gameplay was always mission based where you’re logged into a hub and take missions which involve one contained map with a set goal, and maybe sone secondary goals. Secret/missable parts were there since the beginning also. They’re not mandatory but usually offered some unique twist or something fun to mess around with (like the only laser sword that shot a beam). Free roam was never an gameplay element in the series. The missions are all one sortie or contract at a time for a company, where eventually you reach branching paths for mission choices. For example, a contract to sabotage a company vs a contract to defend that same company from sabotage, you can’t realistically do both and once you’re pissed off that company the story evolves in that direction with subsequent missions. Once you do that, you’re locked into following the relevant path. Arena mode was first introduced in the 3rd AC game on PS1 and was always my favorite thing to do as it gave you the most creative freedom to come up with crazy mech choices, assuming they still let you pick which map to do the arena matches on. I can go on, but I’m not even sure anyone will read this lol. I just love this series so much and didn’t really care for the post-PS2 games so I’m hoping this brings it back to what I remember. They changed the control scheme in the 360/PS3 generation games, and I had played the PS1-PS2 games so much that I couldn’t adapt to new muscle memory and I just gave up after a while. This is really what I’m looking for commentary on, but the game is out tomorrow and I doubt anyone will talk about this point anyway.
It's so refreshing to have a game that is all killer no filler. Although I suppose some people could say replaying the game to get at the new content is kind of filler, but for some reason it doesn't feel that way in my head. Thank you for properly setting my expectations for this game, I'm very excited to have a player character that I can tweak and manipulate during each mission. :)
Honestly the NG+ system where you unlock new missions for at least 3 new games reminds me of DS2, where going Into NG+ adds new enemies and even changes of spawning of them. Really really really excited to play this game, I love souls but the fast pace mech combat combined with beautiful music and what i hope Is a good story Is really enticing to me.
1:45 this boss really gave me some trouble and all I had to do was switch my main guns and I beat him first try with them 😅. I also love how user friendly this game is allowing you to sell weapons and equipment at the same price you bought them which lets you to try out different builds easily
This is where I discovered my missile only build. Easier to dodge everything and do buckets loads of damage with rockets and missle barrages. Felt like a boss my self (the 2nd major boss was inspirational)
@@darkshotmk3missile boats can be great fun. I like to use a missile of each tracking type (diagonal, vertical, apertif, and cluster), as it makes it impossible to dodge every missile. Plus you have two great FCSs for a boost in lock speed or multi lock speed.
Just started it. Major learning curve. Took my like 20 tries to beat the tutorial boss. I love it. Nice to have something else built by good developers that can challenge me in a different way.
I am truly hoping the game does well enough that some of the "issues" people had could be addressed with patches or dlc. I am just excited to get another Armored Core game. I also think in is cool that FromSoft has garnered enough attention that other people might also find out they like Mech games. Your coverage is appreciated, thank you.
YES! Finally someone who gets this game! I have seen so many TH-camrs do the same boring build with the Songbirds and it seems so dull to do all the time! I like to do things my way, such as having a long range plasma rifle and shotgun and having two other weapons to switch between, so when it comes to the big damage I can charge up for a double plasma drill strike followed by an energy spike from the plasma shotgun and it is so satisfying!
I am really happy there are ng+ unique missions! That was the best part of the older games for me, especially in the 4th generation of AC games! I am Hyped for this
I appreciate your review on a series I knew nothing about. I honestly wouldn't have considered this game if I hadn't come across this video someone shared with me. You certainly helped garner quite a bit of interest for me to try this game. Thank you!
For me, AC6 was the most enjoyable game I've played in a long time. I like the _Souls_ series (well, except DS2) and _Elden Ring,_ but often enough my enjoyment turned to frustration. It never felt that with AC6, even when Balteus turned into a wall, for me. Maybe it's just generally easier than those others games, but a major part is the fact that you're not quite so locked into a build. Re-speccing is so much easier and without hassle. At no point did the wall feel insurmountable and every boss I conquered made me feel great. Conversely, by the time I beat Malenia, I felt positively dead inside. I barely reacted to the victory. AC6's engaging gameplay, more conventional narrative and great characters really held me more than any game I've played in a long time.
Great takes here! I’ve loved AC since 4, and yeah 6 is different, but overall I love that it’s true to itself. No muss, no fuss, speedy robit go boom. Once you learn to love it for what it is, you’ll love it forever. I hope they keep making AC games like this. A little weird, a little complicated, a lot awesome.
Some of the best combat in a video game I’ve ever had the privilege of playing. It’s kinda exhilarating. I enjoy it a lot. It doesn’t beat out souls games for me but this is a damn fine good time.
A more relatable perspective to everyone watching? Well I'm apart of everyone and frankly the fact that there aren't as many Old Ravens as myself is almost sad. Almost. But not truly, because I see so many new Ravens growing their wings. We never expected our fun niche series to actually become mainstream. Even if it isn't number one game, even if it's right behind Baldur's Gate. It's beautiful.
I'm a pretty old Raven myself (got my start in 2), and while a part of me was sad that 6 doesn't play like Nexus (where I last spread my wings), much more of me was able to appreciate it as it is. Like you said, it's beautiful to see so many new Ravens. I hope the story of 7 reflects it in-universe!
A fantastic and solid review, but just wanted to highlight the raw artistry of that "simple level diagram". It's charming, it's simple, it gets the point across... I now understand modern art. And I'm only being a tiny bit facetious - it was well timed and warmed my heart. It's always refreshing to know you're still a good lad at heart, Pineapple. No matter how mature and serious you sound giving reviews and advice!
Here's hoping we get a direct sequel for VI like we did for all the other Armored Core games. I know this game is gonna be great already, but I do remember them mentioning something about bringing the possibility to fall into debt back, so that could show they're willing to make an even tougher experience, which sounds perfect if most of these levels aren't too rough.
haven't played VI yet ... but, mentioning debt ... Are you just longing to become a Human Plus? Y'know it's bad for you, don't you? Ravens have gone MAD and DIED after that type of surgery. Stay human. 😉
Being a War Thunder player this sounds terrifying but I assume that such a debt mechanic is meant to actually make the game better, not make it more frustrating to try to get you to buy a premium account.
I love how the armored core series got from software through those late 90s to late 2000s, and at the peak of their game they come back to it. I love it 🥲
If you wanted more big setpiece missions like the big excavator, I strongly recommend Armored Core: For Answer, as that game had a much stronger focus on destroying Arms Forts, which were gargantuan moving structures much like that excavator in chapter 1.
I think the game had an attempt at explaining why those Arms Forts are no longer in service. Walter even says the Strider was "built to fail" possibly indicating that most people by now are aware that Arms Forts are an impractical strategy that can be wasted by one AC.
My brain went straight to this when he said that. So glad someone else mentioned AC4A. AC VI really feels like AC4A ‘2’ to me in a lot of ways minus the shadow of colossus moments that game has.
@@DHCR-core From what I've gathered, each numbered Armored Core game (as well as their respective follow-ups such as For Answer and Verdict Day for IV and V respectively) exists in its own continuity. It's kind of like Final Fantasy in that aspect. Aside from a couple of recurring terms and themes there are no lore connections between VI and the prior series.
I've never played an AC game, but I love the PvE in the Gundam VS. games. What I'm looking for is fluidity in movement, and the footage you showed makes it look that way - it doesn't look clunky like I was afraid of. Replayability was another thing I was looking for - I don't care if a game is short if it's highly replayable. It looks like it is with the short missions and high level of customization. I'll probably check this game out on Steam down the road, because it looks like something I'd enjoy.
“Every second counts.” Absolute fact. I can’t tell you how many clutch moments I had playing this game. After, that initial brutal tutorial boss fight, the game became cake walk.
The difficulty alternative was old AC. If you failed a mission, you still had to pay for ammo used and repairs, so it was possible to go into complete debt. It forced you to either quit or get better to claw your way back into the black to be able to buy more parts and continue. But as an older guy who always loved things like Wip3out, Colony Wars, G-Police and Zone of the Enders, AC was never too much of a problem for me. I'm a mech pilot born in the wrong century, timeline or dimension.
It is trash design, and they did well to get rid of it. It doesnt affect at all those who are already gold at the game, and it makes it unplayable to those who are not. The gap of people who will be able to do the missions deathless if they just restart once or twice is extremely narrow, and for anyone else the mechanic is either irrelevant, or makes the game impossible.
IGN did give it an 8, so you was right about that Once again nice video! Did you make an Iron Man inspired mech at 9:00?? The colour scheme and 2 laser cannons really made it look good, and made me realises, how much fun one can have with the game and the customization lol
Armored Core open world. Flying at super-sonic speed between points of interest, customizing your mech at specific hot spots and taking missions + dialogue while in the field. If From is feeling really spicy they could give you the option to disembark from your mech for an added layer of personality and human interaction. Match made in heaven
An overworld where you have to travel in game to the next mission start zone is my dream for the next AC game. Rubicon looked so vast and breathtaking that I wanted to explore it just like Limgrave and Liurnia in Elden Ring. I want an AC game with a huge scope where you can truly fight for a faction instead of having handful of branching path missions we got here in AC6. Doesn't diminish how good AC6 was but rather the fact that I'm starving for more is a sign the AC formula I've enjoyed for the decades still has the legs to run a marathon just like the Souls series.
@@MrZuriaxI mean the problem with what you want is that the whole mercenary angel is the franchise identity and so is picking your mission frankly all it seems you want is amour souls Bourne which isn't what From software needs to do they need distinct I.P
@@addex1236 ? But you have always been able to pick and choose your missions to an extent. I'd just like future games to build on that a bit more and for the series to expand it's scope. Not really seeing how that is armored souls, maybe it's more like Elden Ring with the overworld concept but that's the only parallel I see.
RE: The difficulty, checkpoints etc. I think the right solution is baked into the game itself already. Yeah, when you just want to complete the playthrough, the non-boss sections are not very challenging. However, when you want to get an S-Ranking on a mission, using a checkpoint or taking too much damage means an automatic lower ranking, so everything becomes markedly more challenging.
I didn't play as far you did but I must say that the smart cleaner was the hardest boss, as of right now (I had to quit the game after beating it to not get mad too fast). I plan to platinum the game so I'm open for ever challenge ahead (besides that smart cleaner)
I hope this inspires you to play the older games too. The controls take a while to get used to, especially the PS1 and PS2 games, but they're really cool and fun.
I haven't played the PS1 ones, but I tried the PS2 remake ones (the PSP release?) before AC6 launched. Oh god the control is hard to grasp ngl. Thank god I can rebind it because I used emulator, but still.
So glad to have your perspective on this as it will be my first Armored Core game. Really interested to see how they implemented learnings from the past ten years into this one.
Great review. I love how you showcase multiple builds throughout the video. All reviews I seen only show like 2 different builds and they weren’t THAT different
The mission count you listed tracks for a mainline Armored Core game. I'm hoping they'll do expansions, and in the modern era of gaming, that means DLC. If Armored Core history is to be followed, the DLC coming for this game is going to be big enough to be games unto themselves. Either that, or they'll release them as stand-alone expansions. Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon could just be part one of the Armored Core VI library.
In this day and age of DLC, I just hope we'll get a whole level expansion pack like we did with releases like Phantasma, MoA, For Answer, etc. Would be a sweet ass idea also if you could edit levels to feature your own objectives for people to complete, and you could place enemies where you wanted, that sort of thing. Imagine of you could take one of your MANY different AC's and put that in as a boss? This game is amazing. While I've loved playing Souls, having poured a good amount of time into each release, my best friend has me utterly beat. He is my walking Souls encyclopedia, he's a HUGE From fan. Yet I've not been nearly as passionate about the games and I haven't given the same amount of oraise to Souls like everyone else and their Mom. But AC dude? I have never felt so addicted to a From game like AC6. I had not even beaten like the 2nd or 3rd chapter of 6 before I urged myself to play the older games. You don't need to play the older games, but there's a lot of content you're missing out on. I can't necessarily just recommend the older games to the modern gamer, but if you're a retro freak like me then yo must try the older ones. It's so satisfying to carry your mech into the next expansion, and then the next until it's time to move to the next gen. I seriously hope there's a huge DLC borderline sequel so I can carry my mechs into the next big battle! Edit: My total playtime so far, and I am on the final route, is around 120 hours. I've not played any other game except maybe 3 or 4 CS2 matches
Incredibly well said; So grateful for this game to have come out and introduced me to the genre / series. Praying FromSoft uses the foundation they created here with this to pump out some more content / titles in the series. It was such a blast!

They definitely took into account the children who played these games are now adults.
Plus you have to play through the game multiple times to fight the secret superbosses
Indeed, I really loved Elden Ring but after 90 hours and being somewhere halfway true the game I quit.
My thoughts exactly
The whole thing with NG+ giving new things to do is a very classic AC thing. Hell, the first AC had a whole system for going into debt, and you could be put so deep into debt that you're forced to sell your body to military science. This caused a full reset of your campaign progress, but you also got a permanent buff every time you "failed" and got new dialogues and I think a couple missions, too.
In this Game you are Human+ from the get go instead

Quality over quantity.
Couldn’t agree more, some games benefit from a large open world (and it’s nowhere near the amount of those games we get). But most games can benefit hugely by being focused linear experiences
Indeed sekiro, doom eternal, malicious, dmc etc there are plenty of REALLY good really fun linear games out there that focus hard on mastery of combat with very little parkour and exploration in between
A short game even like 10 hours can sometimes be the game where you put the most hours in cause you simply replay it over and over to the point where you can get 200 hours in meanwhile a long game after you finish 1 playthrough after 100 hours you really don't wanna replay it cause of how slow it can be "not all long games feel like this prime examples are elden ring, Zelda or mh"
A great indie example is bleed 2 that's like 2 hours long maybe less yet I played it for like 50 hours or more trying to master speedruns , higher difficulties , characters , weapons etc
Tu m'enlèves les mots de la bouche ✌️
That's why I prefer DS3 and Sekiro to Elden Ring. Elden Ring is the best open world game ever made but most of it is still relatively boring compared to polished to perfection linear corridor
So far I'm enjoying the respite in difficulty between boss fights. Blasting through the swarms of low-level enemies helped reinforce the power fantasy I want from a badass mech game. I'm happy From Soft isn't making me have to work for it 100% of the time.
Hahaha I always fear a boss is going to pop out after an easy one
AC in that world also considered an absolute war machine that normal ML and LC can't even hope to win against them, even the NPCs fear for their life and shout "how can we beat an AC we stand no chance"
I mean, would it be that hard to appeal to both though? Could always have the enemies be really easy on the lower difficulties and make them an actual threat on higher ones.

I think the "shorter, boring" missions are there for pacing and to build an experience of a corporate mercenary, there won't be big, bombastic fights every time you go into your mech, so you have to take these missions for the extra dosh either way for that shiny new part in the shop there. Money is money after all
An action game with actual immersion and a few slower moments for the non hyperactive? Now it's piquing my curiosity.
I actually really enjoy the side missions it's a much much needed break from the teeth grinding stress inducing adrenaline gushing boss fights it's very much needed to get some easy missions to not feel like a complete chump in and they are great for grinding money without clicking your jaw for 10 mins lol

I just love that they revived AC. I want to see how they evolve this series even more going forward. Tho hopefully it won't take 10 years this time.
Seems like they're testing the waters.
Armored Core made it into the top 4 for highest concurrent player count for the year on Steam. They'd be crazy not to make another one.
@@StormmbladeI have a feeling this game will be successful enough to cause them to make another
I’d bet that Fromsoftware is going to be making more games like this for a while. They’ve been working on the Souls genre for over a decade without really doing anything else. Games like these that are much shorter that have shorter dev time might be the way to go for Fromsoftware.
They have to this is my first AC game and I love it
Even tho there's a narrative that ends (wont spoil/I'm still playing) I would be surprised if this games gets a couple DLCs that expands misions and equiment variety.
I think that I missing is having a set of missions where you "invade" some industrial plant/whatever and then you're tasked with defending it, so areas that were a pain to advance become your shooting grounds while areas that where easy become much more challenging.
"By X point in the game, I wasn't even thinking about the controls."
As a longtime AC player, that's great to hear.

AC series is kinda known for having pretty chunky additional content for almost every entry in the series. Silent line and for answer as mentioned prior kinda stood out for me, and I enjoyed both a lot for having made a good game even better.
Maybe also focusing on the foundation may or may not also be it, cause VD is certainly "not more of ACV" and certainly SL isnt exactly "more of AC3"
Never played VD, but you're right. They usually make some changes for the better (mostly) I feel.@@lesslighter
@@fenrissilverfang8419 Much like how For Answer has an entirely different gameplay speed despite having MOSTLY the same gameplay design for the generation?

I don't remember which armored core I played as a kid but I remember being overwhelmed by all the stuff I could do in a mission.

There’s also a new game plus and plus plus with new missions on each play through and different endings
9 months later, how's the game going for you? I'm a newcomer to the series, but since I play on a shitty potato, I emulated the old games. I found myself spending more time fucking around with my AC and doing the arena, than doing missions. Is this the same for you?
The sheer customization you have available to you is just crazy here and I'm excited to experiment.
You and the person above you said the exact same sentence, except he said something about having 84 hours in BG3. Weird.
Nice
@@Pmer038yeah, you're right. That is weird. A comment like that might just get someone on the fence to buy this game. Whack.

It's good but.... It doesn't have anywhere near as much as it's previous games unfortunately.
@@ChronostraCould use the bullet orbiters and achieve your dreams that way

(Coughcough gun arms, hover legs, ect)
for me it been longer then 10 years 5 was such a let down after For Answer I couldn't get into it but. from what I've seen 6 will bring back my keen
@@OneBiasedOpinion And it turns out there's a whole bunch of people who jive with AC!
I grew up playing Armored Core. I'm so happy to see that AC6 is still a banger of a game.
I remember when X-Play would shit on them for being slow and clunky.
I really hope this is a proper revival of the series and that they continue making AC games, because this game is so awesome!! I'm a newcomer to the series but man i already love it
It's just so damn fun! lol The movement is great. The mission based gameplay just feels like a classic video game again.
It never gets old, and there's points to easily jump off. I find in open world games you play and play until you're sick of it or just wander aimlessly. With missions, you play until you're satisfied.
That’s what I thought too, reminds me so much of the game structure of Ps2 games. Almost forgot what that felt like lol
Pretty much spot on with the 8/10 reviewers give it, a lot of them are even saying "I gave it -1 because its about mechs" like somehow the topic of the game is a reason to reduce its score (though this happens with "J"RPGs too for not being made by Bethesda style "rpg")
edit: I will say, this sounds a lot like Ace Combat as well. Which has that same feel as a mech game, because a lot of mech media is just the same as fighter pilots but they're robots.
What a bizarre thing to do. How does the basic topic mean it should be given a lesser score?
I mean, sometimes the topic of a game is a downside, especially when it's a super overdone genre like medieval fantasy and they don't provide anything unique to it.
Of course, it is absolutely not the case here, the mech genre is very much not oversaturated (though I can't say if AC6 brings anything unique to the table on this aspect until I play it).
@Darkprosper no yeah I get if they don't do anything new with a genre. The original comment just made it sound like the reviewers were saying mech=bad. If someone said "love this game, but it's fantasy so it gets 8/10" I'd also be confused
Yeah, one of my favourite games i have on my ps4 is AC7. Can't wait to get AC6 too!
So 15 or 20 hours seems fine to me for a game like this, and I'll probably spend significantly more than that making sure I get a perfect score on every mission.
not for a lame ugly mech game. Ill buy it for 20 dollars in a few months.
Good luck with that. Fromsoft games basicaly never go on sale lmao.
60 bucks for 15 hours of gameplay 🤢
As someone who is a big fan of both franchises, AC is very different from AC but both are awesome
There’s actually some overlap between the two fanbases lol, some even consider them “sibling” series

This is by far the best review I've seen for this thing. Can't wait to try it out for myself in a few hours.
And a youtuber ive watched for a long time to boot!
fwiw good ol acfa got a 7.8 from ign. damn it really has been 15 years since then
2:48 stamina comes back if you're floating/falling too, as long as you don't boost for a bit
Closer to 30-50 if New to the series. I played 3-4 hours and am not even close to finishing Chapter 1
For me that 15-20 hours of gameplay better be cutscenes I like getting hundreds and hundreds of hours out of a game.
agreed. i got to act 3 in Baldurs gate 3 and got bored
HOOOOOO.
Hell, half of my playtime will be spent in the emblem editor. That's more than enough for me. So excited to play this!
Having spent 84 hours on my *first* BG3 playthrough, I'm not concerned with the length. The sheer customization you have available to you is just crazy here and I'm excited to experiment.
People are spending 6 hours on the emblem maker alone for proper decaling

I realize that there probably aren’t many people around that have played them all at launch, so after watching the video, here are some comments:
Multiplayer is phenomenal, and the longevity of the games for me was largely due to this.
The whole "choose your own adventure" mission choices unlocked New missions and weapons. It was exciting to start a new game and go a different path!
I killed the thing with an ultra lightweight build and dual laser pistols. No joke, I killed the boss when I had five shots left and was at 400 AP.
@@darkshotmk3missile boats can be great fun. I like to use a missile of each tracking type (diagonal, vertical, apertif, and cluster), as it makes it impossible to dodge every missile. Plus you have two great FCSs for a boost in lock speed or multi lock speed.

Changing missions in NG+ is a hallmark of the Armored Core series. Glad you are enjoying AC VI!
I never considered this type of game until I saw the build variations. Making builds is something I love
Stay human. 😉
Why I like roleplaying being an A.I. posing as a mercenary.

I am hoping if they do DLC, they throw us a few more of these sorts of levels. I would love it lol
Spirit of Motherwill beckons.
ready your VOBs son. we're coming in hot.
jokes aside, I'm glad there's AB in AC6 because VOB spoiled me.
@@egoalter1276 yeah. THAT'S shitty.

U know it's fire when iron pineapple uploads
Armored Core open world. Flying at super-sonic speed between points of interest, customizing your mech at specific hot spots and taking missions + dialogue while in the field. If From is feeling really spicy they could give you the option to disembark from your mech for an added layer of personality and human interaction. Match made in heaven
I hope this game sells well, and we get an Armored Ring type beat with 80 hours of content and massive maps with unending boss fights
I wish more mecha games in the genre allowed us to play the pilot as well and enter the giant mecha.

For answer is still my favourite to this day, youre 100% right on that. I hope this brings it all back for years to come
In this day and age of DLC, I just hope we'll get a whole level expansion pack like we did with releases like Phantasma, MoA, For Answer, etc.
