Thanks so much for watching, you can snag the printable recipe here melissaknorris.com/homemade-pop-tarts-from-scratch-hand-pies/ What's your favorite filling option?
I’ve only made cherry but I can imagine blackberry (or even razzleberry) I can’t wait to try apple. Not sure how to go about it though. Maybe I’ll cut a slice in two right before baking.
If you guys haven’t made the pie crust, what are you waiting for? Chop chop. It is Amazing!!! Butter is awesome, lard is even better if that’s possible if your not as into a butter crust. This crust is so flakey and will get you 5 stars every time. Mrs. Melissa grandma knew what she was doing that’s for sure
I make these too! But I use a pizza cutter and cut mine in rectangles so they are shaped more like a store bought pop tart. My family loves them, especially when I use my homemade jams and jellies in them.
Your pie crust recipe is seriously the best I’ve ever had. Every time I make pies or hand pies and others eat they they rave over them and tell me to open a bakery. Haha! Thank you so much for all you do to share the ways of old!!!
These are beautiful! Also looks so much easier than trying to handle and fold over a larger dough disk, which is what I've done the only couple of times I've done anything like this. Our family loves a savory filling, like leftover stew or thickened up chicken soup. They'll love me for putting fruit in there, I've never given them that treat before! Totally worth every calorie 😋
These are the absolute best!! I bring them into work and they disappear immediately. I made some with the help of my 9 year old granddaughter and she ate 2 of them, then her dad came into the house and he said from now on no birthday cakes just the hand pies.
I just bought some at our farmers market. Lol. They were also delicious. I will definitely have to try this recipe. Thanks for the video and the synchronicity! 💙🌎✌
😎👍🍁👍 I hope you do a video tour , on your homestead builds Garden builds, raised bed builds, vertical garden builds, hoop house build, animal pins, composting bin, garbage bin, Water harvesting system , fire wood storage area, Homestead furniture , etc etc.....it would be nice to see what you did and the improvement / lessons you learned over the years , with builds. cheers
These look amazing. I just came across your channel today and I'm impressed, plus the teenage son lumbering through the video was so real that I was cracking up.
Yum!! Your biscuit recipe is the best ever, I've made it a ton!! Along with the pic crust recipe is really good too!! I've made these but cut rectangles instead of circles. The kids always love them!! ❤❤❤❤😊
Hi! I'm new to your channel! I just made these hand pies last night...they are sooo good. My kiddos are having them with their breakfast, so much better than poptarts. Thanks for sharing!
I’m curious about freezing. I do plan to freeze mine, but how do I warm them up? Do I pop them in the toaster frozen, or thaw first. Can I use an air fryer? Thanks a bunch.
made some of your blueberry lime jam - all the jars sealed great, the jam tastes..."dare I say, sublime?" ;) I had a lot of blueberries, so I simmered for over an hour, and still probably not as fully set as it should have been - looks like that will need to be developed with some experience. I thought I had the sheet test ok, but maybe not.
This looks amazing! Kind of reminds me of the crustable PB&J sandwiches I’ve seen in the freezer section. Do you know if peanut butter would bake well in them with the jam or jelly? I’m hoping this would be a great picnic lunch option for my toddlers when we are on trips or hiking. Thanks!
What state are you in? I watched one of your videos from 2019 for your Garden Tour and saw the mountains in the background . Absolutely beautiful area. I was just wondering what stat this was . Just happen to run across your channel and am enjoying it.
Melissa K. Norris - Modern Homesteading I’m sorry! I swear I looked and didn’t see it! 🤣 I made some of these tonight & filled them with some homemade applesauce I had on hand! So good! Thanks for the recipe & quick reply! ☺️
What a fun recipe. I've got to give it a try. I have one question about your wonderful videos. Would you let us know if the the recipe is in one of your books and if so, would you give the page number and book name?
Wouldnt it have been easier to cut the slits while its flat and then put it on top? I like this idea for hand pies. I usually just make them the size of my hand.
Because the moisture content is so low, I think you totally could. I've had great success using whatever GF flour I have on hand for pie crust recipes. As always, just add your liquid sparingly at the end until you and up with the right texture. (Hope I'm not giving bad info, I haven't checked Melissa's prized recipe yet.)
Am I missing where you say the temperature of the pre-heated oven? I checked the written recipe and it doesn't say it there either, unless I am going crazy (very possible).
Why not make the cuts on the top part of the crust before you set it on the Cherry filling that way it's a flat surface even cuts and it's easier to press on your filling

With my broken heel in between uploading my videos I binge watch homesteading channels. My daughter will love these. Great channel thanks.
So sorry you have a broken heel, ouch!

very nice, Miss Melissa - i think I'll try this with apple filling with a little cinnamon sugar sprinkled on top.

These are wonderful. I used my own favorite pie crust and apricot/honey jam
Love your videos. My daughter in law and I were just talking about making these thanks for the recipe.
I could hear the flaky crunch when you hit into it! Yum I am making these for sure

They look much better than the original ones for sure!! Thanks.

Do you ever add meat filling?
Yummy.
I'm in love ❤️
Melissa where did you find your large flour jar and other containers?
Can you make a savoury meat instead for the filling?
Looks good, but I always sprinkle cinnamon sugar on my pies.

We're in western Washington state
I didn’t see what temp the oven should be set at, didn’t see it in your printable recipe either? Help!
☺️🙏🏻🤣
It's on the printable recipe on step 4 of the instructions but its 375 degrees Fahrenheit
Melissa K. Norris - Modern Homesteading I’m sorry! I swear I looked and didn’t see it! 🤣 I made some of these tonight & filled them with some homemade applesauce I had on hand! So good! Thanks for the recipe & quick reply! ☺️
So glad you guys enjoyed them! And no worries on missing the temp 😊

I try to but will remember that for future recipes. The pie crust recipes are in both books but this one isn't in either

Pop Tart permit, where do I register?
Can you use gluten free flour in this recipe?
I've had several people use a gluten-free blend with the pie crust but I haven't personally tested it

Hi Melissa, can this recipe be halved?
Sure, the dough freezes great too
Kelly Garland I just wrap it up stick it in a freezer bag and chuck it in the freezer.
