    Hi Joe and Kyle. Looks like a great trip, and I love the packboats. I have been paddling my own for a while in prep for my Algonquin crossing this summer. One thing I noticed is that you are using your arms to pull yourself more than I would recommend. This can be a very fatiguing style compared to pivoting at the waist so that you derive power from your legs and core (big muscles) rather than just your triceps (smaller muscles). There are some good tips on TH-cam for this paddling technique. If you are paddling with this technique, you imagine a beachball between your paddle and your chest. As you pivot, your trailing hand should be passing in front or you eyes as you paddle,. Also, rather than pulling with the paddle hand, you should be pushing with the other hand. Just wanted to share these tips because they have worked for me really well to avoid fatigue. Better to adopt these habits early, right?

    Joe. I've been watching. Worried about you when you bonked from the heat. Looking at your packing video and then watching this one, I don't think you eat enough and drink enough (water) on your trips. Especially breakfast. Instant oatmeal is an insulin crash nightmare, dump that crap and get something more substantial. I"m an old Army guy and I know extra weight is a pain, but please consider packing more chow and a way to get more water in you. Love ya Bro. Wish I could join in, but I"m too old.

      Yea keep hydrated. Joe's big problem is not wearing a long sleeve shirt and wide brim hat. In particular the wide brim hat or hat with neck flap is super important. Keeping the sun off your neck all day keeps heat stroke away. I usually take a wide brim fishing hat or if wearing a cap I use my Buff as a neck flap under it.

    Buy you a pack of three foam rod floats or you can make them out of the foam pipe wrap from the big box home centers. They work a treat! Very nice trout you caught, Joe! Bring on the next part.

      Jaro, those extendable Rods can be a little shaky at the best of times. You can buy 4 piece packable rods in a tube, but in reality, any rod can break on you. A spare rod is always a good thing if you are going to be gone for a length of time. But I agree, Joe does a great job of teaching and can inspire anyone to learn more.

    When I dehydrate ground beef i've found it works better if you mix it with bread crumbs before cooking it. I mix 1lb of raw ground beef with 1 cup of bread crumbs by hand then cook the ground beef as usual and dehydrate it. Helps it rehydrate and is much more like it was before dehydration. Great videos!

    I am glad you guys went down the South Channel; that's some of the really exceptionally beautiful terrain in the Temagami region. It is rocky for sure, and the portaging is (as you describe) on another level. But you get to spend some time in some truly gorgeous places.
    The black flies look like hell. I like August/September best, but then you trade the black flies for traffic on portages.
    I'm crossing my fingers that you feel better in Pt2. Heat stress and dehydration are no fun, and can be dangerous. I am reassured that since you are posting the videos, you made it out in one piece. I'm just hoping you had a good time for the rest of your trip ...

    As nice and light as they are, I cant believe that you spent about $3000 on that pack boat!! Ocean Kayaks, especially the Trident series, are the most stable boats on the water (next to expensive motorboats and yachts) and they are half that cost, mind you they are about 20-30 lbs heavier; but as long as you are happy with it, thats all that matters!! Great footage!!

    I actually look forward to each new Bushcraft video as much as I do for a new episode of Alone. I found 2 brand new light weight canoes like your own, except they are from Canadian Tire. Decent price tho. Likely just cheap plastic that will puncture easy and leave you stranded. And no seats or portage brace for your shoulders. Likely by the time you outfit the canoe with everything it needs, may as well buy a more expensive one.

  • @SirBeauJangles
    @SirBeauJangles 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Tip - use lanyards attached to anything that could end up on the lake bed if you capsize or just drop overboard. Nasty thing, losing a rod. You'll look after the next one far better, these things are valuable (costly!) lessons... Been there, done it etc.
    26lb canoe? Feather weight! Mine's 15ft and is supposed to be 26kg - which is underquoting it - it's more like 29kgs. It's an English canoe, plastic. Called a Venture Ontario. Only modest "rocker" since it's a flat water boat. Since I'm 65 now it's a bit on the heavy side for me these days...
    I envy you your laker trout; we don't have those here in Scotland, only Brown Trout and Sea Trout as natural trout species. We do have Arctic Charr in our deep lochs, which are small fish. A big one would be a pound weight unless there's a fish farm on the loch.

    I had a similar experience while hiking the superior trail. We estimated our travel distace badly and had to make up ground at about 25 miles per day. I got very dehydrated, started seeing things on the trail and couldn't eat that night, felt very sick but we had timber wolves around the camp and they were howling a few times throughout the night so that was an enjoyable experience.
