    Joe, I can't thank you enough for making such an entertaining video! I thoroughly enjoyed watching your trip from start to finish, all the hardships, the banter, the laughter, everything. It's been my nightly routine to relax with a cup of tea and watch maybe 15 minutes each night before I go to sleep. I look forward to your next adventure. Keep it up man!

    I know this is an older video, however one of the reasons you might not be catching fish isnt because of your lures or what not. Its early in the year and colder water like that the fish prefer a super slow presentation. It is nice to slow the retrieval speed down to a snails pace as the fish dont want to be too active yet. They are still lethargic. It has worked wonders for me in Algonquin and northern lakes. Also a slower gear ratio like a 5:3:1 works well for colder waters as well!

    Through countless trips I very strongly believe that when in a bad mood, while boiling water for tea go for a quick swim. I've done it in near freezing waters and no matter the conditions it's amazing how much better you will ALWAYS feel after. I do it after every portage that wasn't the best.

      Yea bro well said. We did an epic hike up the east side of Mt Aspiring a couple of years ago. My knee was gone and was exhausted. Jumped in a pool under a water fall and it fixed everything. Water was straight off the glacier.

    use pine resin for an antibiotic... natives have been doing so for millennia.. the clearer the resin and more viscous, they better the essence of pine is present which fries bacteria. not sure if its alkaline or what.. but it works..

    Antihistamines come in handy when in the woods. But you can usually find some comfrey or burdock leaves you can crush then rub on your bites. Raw onion will take the itch away from a bite too. It helps to have a guide to native healing plants in the area you plan on visiting. And never use hairgel or any other body wash products that make you smell delicious to black flies or mosquitoes.

    • @13mithious
      @13mithious 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Heat, hormones and CO2 attract black flies and mosquito's. You hit the flies at peak season there. 6 weeks, from May into June for the B flies in the north.

    I have a daughter around the same age as Emerald. As I am watching this, I had to pause it in between calls for my work at home job. Each time, Zaida would ask, where's Joes?!?!?!

  • @richardjones990
    @richardjones990 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Those black flys are a pain. Permethrin clothing and gear spray would have shut those bad boys down from the jump. Spray your cloths down and let them dry and you are good to go. Sawyer is one brand that works on cloths, gear and they make an excellent Picaridin lotion and spray for your skin.
    You guys bring out the best in each other. Fantastic job, I really enjoyed it. Keep up the good work. It will be fun to watch Kyle's version of the same trip.

The karma between you two is really very, well..., funny as h@ll! I swear, I laughed so hard every time I heard Kyle's "What?" You two should collaborate a whole lot more! That kind of "on-camera" magic, should not be ignored! (Just Sayin'!") On a more serious side, the video was great!!! Thank you for sharing the adventure!

    Loved every minute of those two vids Joe . You sure went thru it with those bug bites. Ouch!! Ouch!! And more Ouches!!!! Hope you took some strong antiseptic creams with you. It's great getting to enjoy the beauty of such places that are way out of my reach to visit. Especially when there're not shown thru rose coloured glasses. Whilst watching I imagine it's somewhere like the north western parts of Scotland only around three or four times larger. Beautiful, stunning, all that the armchair traveler wants from one of their favourite channels. Keep safe Joe and looking forward to you next adventure be it big or small. ATB sue

    Awesome video Joe. In response to the comment about hoping that no one had vandalized your car while you were gone, I recently went camping and when I got back to my car it was about 1:30 am and someone had broken in and stolen everything in it, they also took the time to steal my battery as well. Great trip Joe, looks like a good time. The next time you are in "black fly" country and get chewed up like you did this time, cover the bites with Balsam Fir Resin. Balsam Fir Resin has both antiseptic and analgesic properties, and was used by native peoples to both seal cuts, bites and burns and to prevent infection. It's also a great fire starter, and the needles make a very tasty tea.

    As a longtime Crown land camper, I really understand how much rougher and taxing your Temagami trip was compared to an Algonquin trip. Even the less used "deep interior" routes of Algonquin have better maintained portages routes and trails than what one comes to expect in more remote areas, Crown lands, and unmanaged provincial parks.
    Regarding your reaction to those black fly bites: My wife and I have had similar reactions some years. It seems to happen whenever one has suffered no bites yet that season and one suddenly finds oneself getting many many in a very short period of time. It's as if one's body generates a strong overreaction to that much allergen from the black fly saliva. I expect that now that you've recovered from this, you will not have this sort of reaction again this season. At least, that's been our experience.
    I'm sorry you had such hard luck fishing. Sounds like what you needed was live bait, which sometimes isn't an option, owing to regulations in a provincial park.
    I was very curious about your pack canoe and wonder if you'd do a video about it - specs, features, cost, pros & cons, etc.
    Thanks for sharing this trip with us, warts and all.
    Cheers, - Martin

    A ripper finish to an awesome trip, well done to the both of you. How's Kyle 'eh, the blokes a bit of a machine, no bug bites on him, and then a grueling long drive to get home again, and after all you've just done, wow. I was thinking that you could maybe add a tube of NEOSPORIN to you're med-kit Joe, that would have been some help with the bites, they really smashed you good. Great video Joe. Most of my early trips were right where you guys paddled. I've done Fat Man's portage 5 or 6 times. Crazy tough short portages for sure. Fast forward 30 years Once we decided one way portages were too hard on our aging bodies we started bringing more real food, guitars, and much, much more booze. We always spend 2 nights at a prime campsite and just fish and explore from there. Next time you go I'd suggest Chiniguchi/ Wolf Lake area. Further drive but easy drive to access a more remote gorgeous old growth part of Temagami. Some spectacular campsites, falls, and Smallmouth and Pike fishing. Fewer and easier portages too. That said, I've been on trips like yours in Temagami when it seemed impossible to catch anything! Another thing, we always go mid August now when the bugs have died down a lot.
