I did this 20 years ago. I used chainsaws cuz I wasn't that tough. Still don't pay property tax cuz my place was built from beetle kill spruce. Alaska still respects homesteaders. I drive 30 miles into town everyday so I can work and contribute back to society. Tough keeping up on chores, but the old men tell me it has kept me out of trouble. 20 years no locks on my doors.
It's all Federally Owned Undeveloped Land. You can technically buy cheap land in Alaska. Or you just build out in the sticks. No one us going to bother you. Thousands of Acres with no one around. How do you think the West was settled? It was basically first come first serve. The land is yours, but you have ro develop it. I mean what the hell is the Federal Government going to do with some land hundreds miles away from any sort of if civilization? The Government makes more revenue when people develop the Land. Gotta attract people there some way.

On the other hand what percentage of people would have planned enough food and a contingency for that? Packing enough food for 30 days is not rocket science. Neither is measuring your tarps to see if they fit your roof.
@@Synaps4 probably for sure. But keep in mind they are hauling everything by hand. Plus depending on what you pack for food may turn bad in less then 30 days. They definitely will come better prepared

as a 53-year-old carpenter from Ontario. I built my first cabin at 12 years old, by myself, in my local woods. The cabin was 18' x 12', flat roof, covered with 30" x 30" tin...supplied by my grandpa. Did it all with one of my dad's splitting axes.The cabin was made from eight to ten-inch diameter white cedar. I am enjoying this adventure thoroughly
@lloyd nelson I wish I did, that was 1982...I don't know that had even taken my first picture, let alone have a camera.It's probably one of the reasons why kids did things like that then. We went outside to play.
I'm 50 and I built my first cabin at 47 years old. I learned so buch from the first build (in Louisiana) that I am traveling to Alaska for my next build. I cant wait.
@@markymarc37 Yeah we did. 57 years old. Made a crossbow at 12, from first principles, i.e. we had no such thing as tutorials, I had seen crossbows in comic books. The first one could drive the dowel arrow with six inch nail tip through a inch pine board. The trigger was SUPER touchy, asked an uncle what I was doing wrong. He said "Ummm, the answer is making a crossbow and firing it in the town without training. Come with me" and gave me better gear, and some books, and firm instructions not to shoot anywhere except where there was a backdrop* . He also showed me how to repurpose household things, which was a revelation. You can make an AWESOME trigger from a cupboard catch. * This worked fine, until it didn't.

I live here in Alaska. I am glad others can appreciate this incredible place. Just be careful of the wildlife. I have had run ins with bear and moose when you least expect it.
What I respect the most from you two is your discipline with the food. I've worked hard all my life, I'm 60 now and have been a mason. I'm building a large chimney and fireplace by myself in a new home. I'm not as tough as I used to be but building it alone does give me a sense of accomplishment. Honestly I don't know if I could do what you guys did though. Maybe when I was your age... Keep up the good work!

I'm 61 and on disability myself. Latley I've put a lot of time into exploring gold prospecting and gold mining, which I did my fair share of when I was much younger... I've always been lured and attracted to gold, ever since i got gold fever when i was about 26 living in Northern Cali, in a lttle town called Quincy in Plumas county, on the 3 forks of the feather rivers and many other tributaries, like Spanish creek, Nelson creek, and so many other little creeks bearing gold, all within a stones throw distance in between... I wonder if I can find enough gumption to get after it while I'm still able... not exactly capable of doing everything myself, involved in dropping a shaft, or punching a drift, but I have the spirit... just need to find the right opportunity and perhaps like minded souls that wanna make one last stride to fulfill a dream before getting entirely too old! and wasted away...Btw... I love this video fellas, and the get er done enginuity these fellas display... I totally dig the whole building a beautiful shelter, let alone a sturdy cabin... it is not much different from building a gold mine shaft and drift. This is how the generations before us forged thier ways though the thick of it... it wasn't easy back then, nor is it now, if your not loaded and wealthy. For those of us that weren't born with silver spoons in our mouths, or hanging out our asses,... in order to make it. You pretty much have to be able to carve out your way, and be tougher than nails! You hear these guys wishing they had more nails. Old timers also faced these kind of trials and tribulations... you can only carry so many nails, and tools... the more, the merrier, but there will always be times that you've got to do what you can with what you've got to work with. No matter the circumstances! It is always the the ones at the end of the trail, that took and worked with what they had to work with, and somehow perciveered and won the day... either by making wooden nails... aka... Dowels, or perhaps they knew duck tailing, or any other number of skills that the pioneers of the past presented at the time to move the rest of us forward... Thank God for them! The people that through the ages contributed to making life better for themselves, and then later... all the rest of us who learned from thier knowledge, and even better... thier failures and mistakes. That's what progress looks like. Not everyone is going to be perfect, and make the right decision every time. We learn from mistakes and failures just as much as we learn from success and perfection. Trial and error, is most important, as it guides us away from doom, and despair, and into the light as we do the best we can with what we have to work with... it's not always the the ones that have the best, and the most, and all the money in the world to explore and pay thier way to success! It's the broken back, broke dick mutherhumpers that were tougher than nails, that with thier blood, sweat and tears... found a way, no matter what because, thier lives depended on it. I've been in construction for 25 years and that was a hell of a lot of work guys. Nicely done. Grab yourself a Vaughn 19oz curved handle califoria framer hammer. Cheap, well made, ergonomically silky and powerful. Field test handle like any wood handled tool before taking it into the bush but I have never had one break. Claw doubles as a pickaroon.
@@swervsplatt9672 Stiletto handles usually fail if you work them hard. Most pro's use a separate hammer for pulling nails/demo if they run a Stiletto. They are alright for repetitive smaller nail application but not much else. Vaughn 19oz curved wood handle cali framer is best all around hammer I have ever found and I have tried pretty much all of them. Only one that beats it is an Estwing solid steel framer, which are basically invincible, but handle design lacks that comfortable end grip, wrist flick crazy power that long curved wood handles deliver. -Rehandled Stiletto-not bad but overrated, still takes an extra swing or two compared to others. -Vaughn 19oz cali framer-Best all around. -Estwing 28oz solid steel framer-Thor's hammer that makes nails, thumb tips and knee caps vanish with one swing. Just leave the 30oz on the rack. They are to powerful.
@@bryan73621 Happy to help and hope you put it to work. They feel a little slippery when new because of handle coating, like most wood handled tools, which quickly fades in normal construction use but you can also do this yourself with a little razor scraping, light sanding and boiled linseed oil treatment. Plenty of tutorials on here to check out and enjoyable to do and make it your own. Again, it is a wood handle and everyone is unique so go power swing it into a 2x4 scrap or something as hard as you can a few times so there are no doubts and it's tested and approved. Than tune the handle up. Vaughan has never let me down but I have had other brands break or heads become lose after this simple test. Than go build that cabin!
No one, even the salty old framers around here, use wood handles anymore. Vaughn's fiberglass models are far superior for durability and shock absorption. Wood is outdated tech
@@bryan73621 I was responding to the original guys comment. I never said to use power tools.. if you want to break a wooden handle out in the bush by all means go off. He even recommends to field test them because this is an issue. It's the same company and the same tool just slightly evolved to deal with the obvious issues. Feel free to figure it out on your own new guy 🤣 I own multiple of each fyi. Too funny. Imagine thinking a fiberglass hammer is a "tech" or easy answer. Dudes arent even building the handles in the bush like people would back in the day. You dont even know how to talk yo smack right
@@chompers11 Nah, fiberglass is good but in no way superior. Most pro's still prefer solid metal or wood handles and know how to pick ones with preferable grain and test them anyways just in case. Glass is good for repetitive light hitting or heavy shaft splitting mauls/shovels but work it hard with leverage and it will fiber out and turn into a broom. Hell, even miss the nail or wood you're splitting a few times and hit the neck and it will fiber out. I've broke more fiberglass handles than I can remember usually pulling nails and even saw a guy take a hammer head to the face 30 ft away off one of those glass handle grenades when head let loose. I've never used one since I saw that. Plus I work where it can get down to -30. When it's that cold glass hammer handles can simply shatter from minimal use. Wood handles aren't outdated, they are the universal standard proven by 1000's of years of use.

At 65 and having built my home long ago without a bank or much experience at anything at the end of a road surrounded by national forest,,,, I salute your spirit. Over 30 years later the concrete and people are closing in. I’d in courage you boys to build a life way off somewhere the best you can and use the tools your generation affords toward a righteous life taking care of yourself and yours.

@@russell3521 I'm 69 years old and I quite literally did this about 5 years ago with my grandson. It beat me up a bit, I can't lie. Knees aren't what they used to be. I also have an artificial hip and the cold was hard on it at times. But it was good fun too. People age differently.

Believe me they were doing the right thing, when you feel as though your hungry or too stressed and anxious its best to make jokes especially about your discomforts and fears idk why maybe its a psychological thing but when you acknowledge the situation your in and put a weird positive twist it helps to mitigate whatever it makes you feel, sometimes when I used to do 2 week long sleeping fasts I would joke about how tired I was and that I would need to super glue and Bobby pin my eye lids to keep them open any longer.
I really am impressed by your respect and patience with each other, God is your strength 🙏 Your determination and continuity of endurance is truly amazing!! Your enjoyment is catchy 😊 I like your brotherhood and sharing encouragement for each other. Strong work. That was a hell of a lot of hard-ass work in tough conditions. You guys should be very proud. People who haven’t ever spent days on end outside can’t imagine the discomfort of something like that. Besides easy access to food, water, and restroom facilities that modern civilization affords, the one thing we all take for granted and never even think about is this: Being dry. You spend days and weeks on end outside without a sealed, insulated, air-conditioned space, and you are constantly between wet and damp. And all your stuff, too. Being dry even in humid environments is uniquely modern.
I'm glad to see you guys did this. You're probably a bit tougher now because of it. I'm surprised you didn't switch over to wooden pegs for holding things together to deal with your nail problem. Then again, you came away with experience and lessons learned.
Hi guys, great video I really enjoyed it. Just something I thought might be useful. If you change the diagonals on the door to have the low end near the hinges it has a lot more rigidity and will stop the door sagging.

as a 53-year-old carpenter from Ontario. I built my first cabin at 12 years old, by myself, in my local woods. The cabin was 18' x 12', flat roof, covered with 30" x 30" tin...supplied by my grandpa. Did it all with one of my dad's splitting axes.The cabin was made from eight to ten-inch diameter white cedar.

I'm 50 and I built my first cabin at 47 years old. I learned so buch from the first build (in Louisiana) that I am traveling to Alaska for my next build. I cant wait.

57 years old. Made a crossbow at 12, from first principles, i.e. we had no such thing as tutorials, I had seen crossbows in comic books. The first one could drive the dowel arrow with six inch nail tip through a inch pine board. The trigger was SUPER touchy, asked an uncle what I was doing wrong. He said "Ummm, the answer is making a crossbow and firing it in the town without training. Come with me" and gave me better gear, and some books, and firm instructions not to shoot anywhere except where there was a backdrop* . He also showed me how to repurpose household things, which was a revelation. You can make an AWESOME trigger from a cupboard catch.
* This worked fine, until it didn't.

I'm not as tough as I used to be but building it alone does give me a sense of accomplishment.

I’m now on disability and in the last 10 or so years I’ve become interested in all this outdoorsy survival stuff and I wish I would’ve done it as a young man I’m jealous, you men are tough. I'm 61 and on disability myself. Latley I've put a lot of time into exploring gold prospecting and gold mining, which I did my fair share of when I was much younger... I've always been lured and attracted to gold, ever since i got gold fever when i was about 26 living in Northern Cali, in a lttle town called Quincy in Plumas county, on the 3 forks of the feather rivers and many other tributaries, like Spanish creek, Nelson creek, and so many other little creeks bearing gold, all within a stones throw distance in between... I wonder if I can find enough gumption to get after it while I'm still able... not exactly capable of doing everything myself, involved in dropping a shaft, or punching a drift, but I have the spirit... just need to find the right opportunity and perhaps like minded souls that wanna make one last stride to fulfill a dream before getting entirely too old! and wasted away...Btw... I love this video fellas, and the get er done enginuity these fellas display... I totally dig the whole building a beautiful shelter, let alone a sturdy cabin... it is not much different from building a gold mine shaft and drift.
This is how the generations before us forged thier ways though the thick of it... it wasn't easy back then, nor is it now, if your not loaded and wealthy.
For those of us that weren't born with silver spoons in our mouths, or hanging out our asses,... in order to make it. You pretty much have to be able to carve out your way, and be tougher than nails!
You hear these guys wishing they had more nails. Old timers also faced these kind of trials and tribulations... you can only carry so many nails, and tools... the more, the merrier, but there will always be times that you've got to do what you can with what you've got to work with. No matter the circumstances! It is always the the ones at the end of the trail, that took and worked with what they had to work with, and somehow perciveered and won the day... either by making wooden nails... aka... Dowels, or perhaps they knew duck tailing, or any other number of skills that the pioneers of the past presented at the time to move the rest of us forward... Thank God for them! The people that through the ages contributed to making life better for themselves, and then later... all the rest of us who learned from thier knowledge, and even better... thier failures and mistakes. That's what progress looks like. Not everyone is going to be perfect, and make the right decision every time. We learn from mistakes and failures just as much as we learn from success and perfection. Trial and error, is most important, as it guides us away from doom, and despair, and into the light as we do the best we can with what we have to work with... it's not always the the ones that have the best, and the most, and all the money in the world to explore and pay thier way to success! It's the broken back, broke dick mutherhumpers that were tougher than nails, that with thier blood, sweat and tears... found a way, no matter what because, thier lives depended on it.

I've been in construction for 25 years and that was a hell of a lot of work guys. Nicely done. Grab yourself a Vaughn 19oz curved handle califoria framer hammer. Cheap, well made, ergonomically silky and powerful. Field test handle like any wood handled tool before taking it into the bush but I have never had one break. Claw doubles as a pickaroon.
@@swervsplatt9672 Stiletto handles usually fail if you work them hard. Most pro's use a separate hammer for pulling nails/demo if they run a Stiletto. They are alright for repetitive smaller nail application but not much else. Vaughn 19oz curved wood handle cali framer is best all around hammer I have ever found and I have tried pretty much all of them. Only one that beats it is an Estwing solid steel framer, which are basically invincible, but handle design lacks that comfortable end grip, wrist flick crazy power that long curved wood handles deliver.
-Rehandled Stiletto-not bad but overrated, still takes an extra swing or two compared to others.
-Vaughn 19oz cali framer-Best all around.
-Estwing 28oz solid steel framer-Thor's hammer that makes nails, thumb tips and knee caps vanish with one swing. Just leave the 30oz on the rack. They are to powerful.
@@bryan73621 Happy to help and hope you put it to work. They feel a little slippery when new because of handle coating, like most wood handled tools, which quickly fades in normal construction use but you can also do this yourself with a little razor scraping, light sanding and boiled linseed oil treatment. Plenty of tutorials on here to check out and enjoyable to do and make it your own. Again, it is a wood handle and everyone is unique so go power swing it into a 2x4 scrap or something as hard as you can a few times so there are no doubts and it's tested and approved. Than tune the handle up. Vaughan has never let me down but I have had other brands break or heads become lose after this simple test. Than go build that cabin!
No one, even the salty old framers around here, use wood handles anymore. Vaughn's fiberglass models are far superior for durability and shock absorption. Wood is outdated tech
@@bryan73621 I was responding to the original guys comment. I never said to use power tools.. if you want to break a wooden handle out in the bush by all means go off. He even recommends to field test them because this is an issue. It's the same company and the same tool just slightly evolved to deal with the obvious issues. Feel free to figure it out on your own new guy 🤣 I own multiple of each fyi. Too funny. Imagine thinking a fiberglass hammer is a "tech" or easy answer. Dudes arent even building the handles in the bush like people would back in the day. You dont even know how to talk yo smack right
@@chompers11 Nah, fiberglass is good but in no way superior. Most pro's still prefer solid metal or wood handles and know how to pick ones with preferable grain and test them anyways just in case. Glass is good for repetitive light hitting or heavy shaft splitting mauls/shovels but work it hard with leverage and it will fiber out and turn into a broom. Hell, even miss the nail or wood you're splitting a few times and hit the neck and it will fiber out. I've broke more fiberglass handles than I can remember usually pulling nails and even saw a guy take a hammer head to the face 30 ft away off one of those glass handle grenades when head let loose. I've never used one since I saw that. Plus I work where it can get down to -30. When it's that cold glass hammer handles can simply shatter from minimal use. Wood handles aren't outdated, they are the universal standard proven by 1000's of years of use.

@@russell3521 I'm 69 years old and I quite literally did this about 5 years ago with my grandson. It beat me up a bit, I can't lie. Knees aren't what they used to be. I also have an artificial hip and the cold was hard on it at times. But it was good fun too. People age differently.

i love that despite how hungry you guys are feeling, you still manage the energy to crack jokes
Believe me they were doing the right thing, when you feel as though your hungry or too stressed and anxious its best to make jokes especially about your discomforts and fears idk why maybe its a psychological thing but when you acknowledge the situation your in and put a weird positive twist it helps to mitigate whatever it makes you feel, sometimes when I used to do 2 week long sleeping fasts I would joke about how tired I was and that I would need to super glue and Bobby pin my eye lids to keep them open any longer.

People who haven’t ever spent days on end outside can’t imagine the discomfort of something like that. Besides easy access to food, water, and restroom facilities that modern civilization affords, the one thing we all take for granted and never even think about is this: Being dry. You spend days and weeks on end outside without a sealed, insulated, air-conditioned space, and you are constantly between wet and damp. And all your stuff, too. Being dry even in humid environments is uniquely modern.

Hi guys, great video I really enjoyed it. Just something I thought might be useful. If you change the diagonals on the door to have the low end near the hinges it has a lot more rigidity and will stop the door sagging.
