- After all his years of wilderness survival around the globe, the forests of Ontario’s Temagami still rank as some of the most difficult, harrowing and challenging survival experiences Les has ever faced. Breathtakingly beautiful, Temagami’s old growth pine forests and refreshing blue lakes, bountiful with fish and wildlife, are sure to test Les’s survival skills yet again. Les returns to the oldest mountain ranges in North America to survive with no food, no water, no shelter, no safety and no camera crew. He survives eating wild edibles, hunting for food, making a fire and building a shelter. Key challenges are the incessant sting of mosquitos, blackflies and deerflies, as well as staying ever vigilant for moose, wolves, bears and other territorial wildlife.

I never watched Survivorman before you posting it on TH-cam really, this is one of the best shows ive ever watched. Its so real, and chill. Les makes no Drama about any of it and is just their to inform us and go about his passion, filmmaking. What you see is what you get just a real man out there in the real world, nothing too crazy, just real.
He's honestly what started the "big bang" of survival shows and videos imo. Nobody does it as good as him but damn... im so happy he's releasing them slowly to youtube.

The phenomenon he was talking about at 38:14 is very real, I was camping on Wasaksina Lake in Temagami back in the 2000's on an island. It was gorgeous all day, then just at dusk I heard this strange buzzing, a hum coming from the mainland forest across from us. I already had my skeeter mesh shelter set up.
The mosquitoes came across the lake at us like WWII bombers in formation, and when they hit we ran for our lives. I've never seen so many in my life, the entire mesh was black with them. Luckily I had some wine and settled in for the duration.
Went fishing on one of those small lake in the North Bay area, can't remember the name. There was a small island in the lake, densely overgrown, it was just getting to sunset as we headed back passed the island . I became aware of a hum that grew louder and sounded like a pipe organ. My uncle ' gunned ' the little 9.9 horse Evinrude out of there.
LOL - I grew up with that sound every night. Terrifying!

I've been addicted to Les's videos for sometime now and have watched them all many times over..I remember the old days when you would have to wait all week just to see his show. I am so glad he uploaded them with no commercials for everyone of all ages to enjoy and reach many more new people and inspire another generation. I knew a lady in her late 50's in a nursing home, who could only grunt and walk around and she had to be fed. She was incontinent of bladder and bowel. She suffered brain damage after she and her husband ate the wrong mushroom. Her husband died as a result..They were experts and experienced but it goes to show that care and knowledge of certain wild edibles must be taken. Thank you Les for another great adventure and sharing your knowledge! Thank you!

Me too. Loved the Australian Outback one where he caught crawdads and ate those massive grubs (which he seemed to enjoy a whole). I also like the Arctic Canada one where he caught a ton of Arctic char.
Love the arctic one where he managed like four large fish in one day and was just chowing down on sushi.

@@theeyeballengineer1982 that's an entirely different plant also known as 'man-root'. It's got a completely different leaf shape and a massive root system, and the entire plant is toxic. What you see in the video is Medeola virginiana, which is a member of the lily family that only grows in eastern North America
As a Canadian I would like to say this man is one of our greatest treasures we have. If anyone harms this man I will literally force them to pull a survivorman.

I know it wouldn't be survival, but would be nice to see Les go camping and see what he takes with him to make life easy, rather than merely surviving.
Watch the Sierra Nevada episode from Season 3. Compared to most of his episodes, he is just camping there with minimal danger...even has a tent with him.
Check out Joe Robinet, basically what he does and he has even said he's drawn inspiration from Les.

He’s done it. Many times. Watch all episodes… cable back in the day was the blessing we needed when it came to things like this show.
Like many, I grew up watching Les' adventures. I wanted to traverse wilderness with ease like him. Never be scared or without control. It took me years to convince myself (and to others) I could do long distance solo hikes in the absolute wilderness. Now, these adventures in the northern Europe is a part of me I couldn't live without. Thanks Les for guiding me into this path of enjoying the nature with respect and humbleness.

I've been around the world and lived in Canada for years. This environment in this episode is the absolute last one I'd want to be stuck in for a night, out of every Survivorman location. The bugs up north are just unreal. You don't know bugs until you've had the big horseflies bite visible chunks out of your skin, it stings like hell and starts a stream of blood running down
That's what inspired the "black fly song"
Song is a story about the mans first job, sent out into the bush of north ontario with a survey crew

I used to love the animated short as a kid, still find myself humming it decades later
Try sweden then. If he was walking around like this in a northern swedish forest he'd be eaten alive. And that's daytime lol, let's not even talk about the night.
Les is the best survivalist out of all of them. He doesn't go on and on about nothing.
My dad was born in Temagami, he took me up there a few times to fish. Martin river, Castle lake etc...used to stay at Beaverland lodge on May 24....so many good times up there...had a couple times where we got in trouble too...boat broke down....good times
Also got swarmed by black flies so bad that we had to run...tried to park on a beach and have lunch....didn't happen that day....but at least they weren't deer flies or horse....shudders
I spent my first 16 summers on Lake Herridge. My grandparents had a place on 11, across from Papa Johns. 7 miles south of town. Very much miss that place. Had a lot of friends up there. Locals and cabin owners. Many memories.

Tamagami was one of the greatest 7 day outdoor portage adventure I've ever had
Temagami is the epitome of Northern Ontario wilderness, or of Canada's Boreal forest for that matter. I've become obsessed with this place, and am always looking for canoe tripping videos here on TH-cam from this area, and I've been meaning to check out your show for awhile now, so I was very pleasantly surprised to stumble upon this episode! Just awesome, thank you so much for doing this!

When you're surviving lockdown sometimes a simple youtube video... is all you need. I can even crush up my entertainment and boil it if I need to reuse it to replenish myself.
Just the sound of the mosquitoes was making my skin crawl. Having been in bug infested, mosquito overrun places many times in my life, not much can be worse.
Always helps to watch Survivorman in hard times! We’ve been staying in a shelter due to Covid and my daughter being born with a disability, we ran out of money and that was that. But I’ve worked hard to secure a scholarship to go back to College and it comes with an apartment me and my kids can stay in and things are looking up. It’s a different type of survival but watching Les survive in the wild sure makes you a lot more thankful for one room and a bunk bed!
I’d like to see Les do an Alone recreation with their least productive toolkits and see how they should have utilized their tools.

Me and my friend got lost in Algonquin for 3 days. Our trail just disappeared on a portage. We just kept going south the entire time. It was he'll, destroyed by bugs but we made it on our own. Found a logging road. And then followed it all the way back to our canoe. Such a great memory

Les' use of his survival techniques drives home the importance of learning and practicing. In the wild, there is no substitute for skill.
My fave line of Les's was when he was eating witchetty grubs. He said, "Don't ask me why, I'm just not eating the head.". 😸 That was back when the series was new. Been watching this show since it first aired and Les was in the Boreal forest here in Canada.
Back in the days when cable TV was worth it. Good memories! I, too, personally try to avoid swallowing things that are going to try to bite me on their way down.

Years ago my brother and I went camping in Algonquin Park, which is just east of the Temagami region, at the height of mosquito season. The first night we were lying in the tent, trying to sleep when suddenly the breeze died down, the frogs paused their croaking, and it was dead silent for a moment, save for a continual high pitched hum. We were surrounded by kilometers of hungry mosquitoes with just a thin layer of nylon between us and them. Moonlight outside the tent show us the masses of tiny vampires clinging to the fabric, looking for a way in to their blood meal. It was a disturbing moment. Fortunately the breeze returned to drown out the hum and we were able to sleep.

I’m fortunate to have an off grid, water access cabin in this area - this is a true representation of the environment. Bugs have just begun to get bad but it won’t keep us from camp...and no people.

Everybody into this stuff eventually finds out about Les Stroud but until now watching Survivorman was based on if you were lucky enough to catch it on TV and episodes seemed few and far between. So glad they're on youtube now.
Les - this reminded me so much of the time I spent on "Outward Bound" in the Rainy Lake area. 14 teenagers in 7 teams in canoes...2 guides...2 weeks. No food. I grew up in the north woods, so I had a huge advantage. I actually gained weight where the others lost 5-10 #. Good times.
Les is the GOAT, and A goat. He can and will eat anything. It would be interesting to see him compete on a show like Alone.
First Man Out with Ed Stafford but it doesn't sound like Les is in good enough shape for that physically the way he is talking in this video.

Being a pilot when I’m flying over remote areas I’m glad I watched Survivorman and I think of Les. gives me somewhat confidence if i crash in the middle of no-were and knowing just a little things like using a knife at a downward angle on the Flint stick not a rock. 😉

Just wanted to say I watched your show on TV since the first episode. The things you cover are practical and necessary. The fact that you were by yourself with no camera crew or medical assistants separated you from all other reality TV survival shows. Food, awareness, sleep, and maintaining a clear head will help people to survive. Your channel is an invaluable gift for those who want to pay attention and survive. Overall you show people the importance of prioritization and believing you can make it out of it.

Hi Les, this is like a flashback for me here in Michigan, I went camping the past 4 days and in between the rain showers, the skeeters were swarming, glad I had my head bug net and screened hammock. Rock On!

I came to say that too! To me it is medicine, a gift from the Gods, generally not something I'd set on fire. I forage it and take it every day with my coffee.

I love Les man.. When quarantine started last year I binged Survivorman. I am convinced it got me through the early parts of this pandemic. Such a good show and quite nostalgic for me as well.

Les, until now I had no clue about anything. Last week I start watching your videos for the first time ....yeah, where have I been and realized how clueless I was. It totally change my prospective I always thought nothing can really happen in the woods of predictable Florida. Just watch for the gators and stay on trail. Now, I ask myself questions before I go out for hours. What is in my backpack and yes ,I added quite few things. I am more aware of my surroundings I see things that could be possibility for shelter or fire starter. I carry pepper spray as a woman solo hiker. I have always emergency blanket and map with campus. I just wanted to share it with you not sure if you reading it. Thank you from my bottom of my heart for educating me all of us. Forever fan 💖
I love the creeping snow berries, when we played in the woods, as kids, we would eat them all the time. They tasted like mint to me. Kids these days don't know what they are missing, they don't play out doors any more.
Classic ignorant comment with the "kids these days..." I see plenty of kids playing outside all of the time where I live. An entire generation of kids is not camped indoors nowadays. There are plenty left playing outside.
The happiest my daughter is is when we go out to State Parks...

@@chazschuck6474 Where i live, and in many areas in the world, kids stay inside and play video games, where I'm from. The nicest of days and I drive around my city but see no kids out playing as we did. The world has changed so much since I was a teenager. We only got cable when I was 16 yrs old. With all the technology today, a lot of kids don't know what the realbeautiful world ( nature ) is. Not trying to start any arguments, just saying what I see and how it affects us.

@Jimmy Penrose What’s funny tho is that if you listen to Les’ first episodes, you’ll hear British bird species. For example, when he was in BC in the mountain episode, I was cringing b/c post production mixed in a European Robin. He used these same sound effects in many of his northern survival episodes... kinda ruins it if you are a biologist and know woods... but Les is a survival expert, not a biologist so I’ll stay in my lane.

Being from Ontario. When you go north the mosquitoes and horse flys are absolutely brutal at times.
Same down here in fl swamp it'll drive you crazy it's done it to me many times. Lol
Especially in that region. I remember as young adults going camping alone for a week around that area and there was such a crazy cloud of mosquitoes and black flies that my cousin wrapped the cord of the rope around the boat we were portaging with and just took off running like a madman lol.
Les, catnip isn't native to Canada but now grows there wild.
The plant acts as a natural insect repellent.
I crush it up and rub it into my clothing and it helps a ton (ontario)
Also, eat lots of fresh garlic.
Rubbing catnip on yourself in the wild is all great and everything, until a bobcat or lynx decides to use you as a cat toy. "No kitty, noooooo!"

I like how les keeps things real. Not every attempt is a win, sometimes you just mitigate the conditions a little and look for things to improve your situation. I'm a firm believer in stacking the deck in your favor, pack enough essentials to bend fate in your favor.

Does anyone know what plant he ended up eating? Was it wild cucumber or not?
Yes, but he incorrectly refers to it as “wild cucumber” it’s actually Indian cucumber root (Medeola virginiana)... He is used to seeing the non-flowering stage that just has whorled leaves with no flowers or fruiting.... But Les’ advice is sound as always...if you aren’t absolutely sure, DON’T eat it. And don’t rely on a tv show (or a TH-cam comment) to identify safe plants, there are some very toxic plants out there!
Bug net has to be on my list of survival pack EDC, even if I never need it.
I keep a bunch of deep woods off towlettes in my pack.
I've started wearing a head net over a big floppy hat... makes you look like a beekeeper but that's why it works.

Always been a fan since the early days. I like the fact that your in Canada , Ontario specifically. Tough place to survive in the dense bush. Born in Timmins it's hard to explain the mosquito situation to people.

I’m in Minnesota and originally from the northern half of the state. The mosquitoes are the size of helicopters and are in huge swarms. It’s insane and people don’t understand how bad it is. I moved to the south end of the state away from the water so they’re almost nonexistent now.

Watching the constant swarm of mosquitoes buzzing around is giving me anxiety.
I don’t know about you but if I was there in his place with that canoe I would’ve pulled it down on top of me and at least I would’ve been protected from the mosquitoes and probably would’ve had a nice quiet sleep until the thunder and lightning that is

That plant resembled a ginseng plant quite a bit, which also has an edible root s very valuable one. But the value of being able to survive is priceless. Thanks so much for sharing everything you know and being the ultimate survivalist. I’ve been watching you since the beginning. I always appreciate anything you share and love new videos. 100% not ginseng. It was wild cucumber.
I’ve looked online and found conflicting results on wether or not wild cucumber is edible or poisonous. I guess avoid it all together..

It looks like Les is using his knife edge to strike the ferro rod, not a huge problem but use the spine , or the back of his saw would preserve the precious edge when outdoors, even a sharp rock can be used.
As long as your knifes are good quality it won't affect edge enough to make a difference

Knife has a gut hook on it, skinning knife, educated guess would say that the spine probably doesnt have an edge enough to do the job of striking
@@jeremymoses7401 takes 1 min with wet n dry and a board to square off a spine, a signature model surely would have a square spine
Canoed and portaged many times in Georgian Bay area and the worst thing were the insects especially the black flies. Thank you Les for these wonderful videos!
