I viewed your video instruction on the Nexus 7 battery fixes. I opened up my tablet's back door and I noticed quite a gap surrounding the battery. So I removed the connector and snugged the battery towards the connector point. I then took some masting tape to secure in the snug position. Plugged the 7 back to charge the Nexus 7 back and it currently running. Thanks for your simple instruction on fixing this battery issue! Thank goodness for TH-cam!!!
Thank you so much for posting this video. My mom (Grammy) purchased the Asus Memo Pad 7 for 4 of our children for Christmas. Within a day or so we started having problems; one wouldn't power on and one wouldn't charge. I thought it was the charging port but my husband said he thought it was the battery. We did an online search and found your video. We decided to try your fix. Sure enough the battery was disconnected due to some design flaws from the manufacturer. It was a simple fix and now all of the tablets are working and charging as expected. Thanks again for such a helpful video!
THANK YOU!!!!! I have watched tons of tutorials and nothing has worked. I haven't been able to use my Nexus 7 for about several months because everything I have tried has not worked. Because of your tutorial my nexus is fixed!!! YAY!!!!!!!! Thanks again.
Thanks for your help with this our Nexus is now happily charging. We bought two of these about two years ago and have had one of them replaced twice within the warranty period. Other than they have been great although we have had to do a few resets, mostly if the kids let the battery level get too low. Good video and nice clear explanations.
Excellent video. Although the connector did not appear to be loose on mine, the wires were taught due to skewed position of the battery. I disconnected and reconnected the connector after adjusting the position of the battery and fixing with gaffer tape and hey presto back up and working fine. Had to use a pen knife to remove the back as my nails not up to the job. Not absolutely sure the connection was loose, but certainly the reconnection had a positive effect. Many thanks.
Oh thank you! I had tried other methods to get my Nexus back up and running and nothing. This solution worked for me. When I opened mine up the battery had been taped at the upper part and and stretched the wire connection to the point it finally came a loose. Now I've adjusted it and its working again. Thank you sir!
Did exactly as described; opened my nexus , fixed the loose contact from the battery and put some tapes to hold battery and wire in place and it was working fine (I had flickering screen issue). Thanks
Worked flawlessly when my N7 didn't want to turn on few months ago, had the same issue today, this time I had to leave the battery unplugged a bit more (15 minutes actually) to make it back to work
Worked for me. Used a power supply into one red and one black wire, set to 3.5 volts and current limited to 100 ma. It charged to 20 percent in 9 hours and just plain turned on once I did the 30 second button push. Doing the happy dance....
+Charles M. Bergren Loving the technical solution used for this. I'm always scared to suggest things like this as getting it wrong can go badly wrong. Sounds like you did everything right though!
Thank you +PIXscotland ! This worked for me. had to stick in some tape in the gap between the battery and the slot and it works fine now. You're brilliant.
We thought that my wife's Nexus 7 2012 was bricked, when none of the other non-invasive recovery methods worked. After watching this video to get a better view of opening the case I reconnected the battery connector, slid the battery to the right side (closer to the connector), and added tape to keep the battery from moving. The tablet booted up with no issue. Thanks for this very helpful tutorial. Can you explain what that bit of coiled wire taped to the inside of the cover was for, though? I didn't quite catch your explanation on that.
Hello, thank you very much for this. I have now checked the battery connections but unfortunately this is not the problem with my Nexus. It went from working perfectly one day (its about a couple of years old) and I had it fully charged, to being a problem to turn on the next day! I did manage to turn it on and left it charging again as the charge had dropped considerably from the previous day despite not being used. Turned it off overnight but that's it, it has now stopped responding at all. I have tried the standard fixes suggested, going through the sequence of button pressing with no luck. I have tried several different chargers, nothing. Can the battery suddenly stop working like that or could it be another problem?
actually, the Nexus micro usb port was defunct, so bought a dock and it charges only on that now, which is a bit of a nuisance. Might be worth knowing that new Nexus 7will not charge on docking station as it does not have the four pin thing on bottom left. Thanks again for your help

Thank you for this. What about the flex cable next to the power source? Do we coonect that? Thanks. My flex cable was too short ti do so while original tape was holding flex cable down.
Hi Thanks for the advice - I have taken the cover off and gone through the steps you have suggested but it still won't switch on or charge. I have already taken the nexus to a local repair shop and spent £60 on a new charging port and another £30 on something else? Total £90..... do you have any other suggestions please? Many thanks
I don't have that thing you wiggle the battery connector with the wires on it? I haven't really opened it and it was just covered with tape to hold it down, my screen just flickers now and it's loose but there's nothing to hold it down, don't know what to do.
I had the exact same problem as shown on this video but to fix mine all I did was take off the back cover and press down random wires and other components clicked the back cover back in place and it just started charging again.
so I just tried to do this with my nexus 7 that I hadn't use for about a year and now when I plug it in the backlight doesn't even turn on.. did I break my nexus? great video by the way.
Hi! My Nexus 7 works fine, it apparently charges and truns on and off without any problems. But, the little battery in the corner on the right on the screen always displays the red "battery is dead" icon. I accidentaly dropped my tablet and ever since it displays that red battery. When i connect the charger it changes to the "charging" icon. But i can never see the % battery power and it wont update Android because it says "not enough power". Though, i can use my tablet all day when i charged it at night. Will fixing that battery-cable inside like showed in this vid fix this problem? (Is that the matter?) Thanks in advance!
@Mike Scheuneman The NFC tag inside the machine is programmed to enable/disable the Tethering features my Nexus 4 phone. Rather than going through the phone menu to enable things I can just wave my tablet in front of the phone and the tablet will connect to the WIFI on the phone and get access to the internet.
PIXscotland So does that have anything to do with the battery issue? I came here for the battery issue and if this is something else, then it is sidetracking the convo.
+wjrasmussen666 I came here to learn about the internals about my Nexus. Not listen to you whine about what is and isn't sidetracking the "convo". You're an idiot for thinking anyone else cares about your agenda. This is his video, he can make whatever comments he wants.
Tried all the various key stroke combinations suggested by Google without success. Watched this and thought I would check inside.....found a loose battery connection! Hey presto currently charging long dead battery and working through Andriod updates. Thanks I had almost thrown it away
My nexus shows it turning on (the Google logo + "x') but then the screen flickers black and white a few seconds then shuts off. I've tried unplugging the little cabley connecting thing in the back And plugging it back in like you showed but its still doing this? Any suggestions?
@ William Mantet I run my Nexus down all the way often as I forget to actually power it off and leave it in my work bag for days. It's not have a problem restarting at all. Try charging it for at least three hours and then hold the volume down and the power button at the same time for 30 seconds, or until it shows "START" beside the power button. If you see that, release and tap the power button to start again. (I couldn't reply directly as your reply options are blocked in YT and G+)
i dropped my nexus and the right and side of the screen is black and it has rainbow lines on it. how can i fix it. i opened it up but i didnt know what to do. and to get it repaired professionally cost $200. can you help me?
peachfuzz5566774 Once a Nexus 7 has a cracked or damaged screen it's probably best to buy another device unfortunately. A screen and digitiser would cost more to replace than the device is worth if done professionally. You may be able to get parts cheap from Ebay and do it yourself if confident enough though. I'd buy a new one personally.
My Nexus 7 is still not turning on... I have tried this method a few times, and held the power button on for a minute, tried charging it for a few hours... yet it still wont turn on, do you think I should send it in to get it fixed? I wonder if it's even worth it... I regret running the battery all the way down
Hi: I got the tablet to turn on, but it still won't charge. I am thinking that there is something wrong with the connections. The cable falls off.. won't stay connected. Any ideas? Please advise. Best regards, Emma
If the connector is falling off it sounds like the plastic frame is broken, or the battery "lump" is not getting gripped in the frame. How does your connector compare to this photo?? : dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/124161/nexus7connectorOnTH-cam.jpg
I followed all the steps and it is now charging but there is no battery icon or anything, should there be something to show its charging straight away. I tried pressing the power and volume down button but no luck, what should I do next?
hi pls help me, I just tried this trick, and now my nexus 7 shows charging icon even when I am not plugging it. I did take off the tape that stick the battery, does it affect this?
My tablet I would plug it in at night and it would saying its charging when I woke up it would be at 17% or even lower. Also I couldn't charge it unless the charger was in a certain spot. This went on for a while then it just died. We got a new battery and it's not turning on. Any idea what's going on?
Make sure you charge the battery for a few hours before trying to switch it on. Once charged, try holding the power button and the Volume Down button together for 10-15 seconds. If it wakes up, choose START and press power to start up normally. Hopefully this fixes it for you.
hi, The best guide that I have seen was on Volt daddy (i did a google) Probably the most useful info on batteries and this kind of thing that I have found.
My nexus & isn't charging very well at all, was going to buy a new battery but mine seems slightly different as it doesn't have the 3mm gap between the battery and the spot near the camera so there's no room for my fingers to wiggle the connector out?
Ok. Got the photo. The connector appears the same as mine. They are sort of help in place with the latch in the middle of the top face and do need a bit of encouragement to pull out.
i have recieved my AsusN7 to day and have a problem in charging but now ok i well just wait how many hour it well be full,i have charging power now hold power and volume + for 15 sec i well boot up to google but it well shut off and says low batery but dont worry it is charging now , when u press power boton i well display batery icon charging ang active charging .
When i try to start mine i get a black screen flickering and nothing happens after that i have tried restarting this reconnecting the battery i dont know what to do now.
@ Cathryn Brown The battery can instantly stop working if the battery believes it is failing. Just behind the power cables on the battery there's a protection circuit that will try to prevent dangerous situations. This type of battery can be a major problem if they are charged badly so that circuit is needed. Batteries can be replaced pretty easily as you see, but they are not too cheap. It might be worth trying to get one from Ebay or other place. Just don't spend too much on this "possible fix"
I've run into an issue, a few weeks ago I was using my nexus like any normal day, had 23% battery, to me this was no problem, had no issues before. I went on for a few minutes not touching it, came back to it and found it wouldn't turn on, after many attempts I got it to turn on and everything was fine, however, I ran into an even worse issue. while going on about it froze with an odd greyed out screen, then it went black and had pixels jumping about, I did the old battery trick, even tried a new one on it. to my disappointment nothing worked, now I can not even get it to turn on what so ever. please help, thank you :) Also, my nexus 7 is almost 2 years old.
Shad Wood Pixels jumping about? Static like an old TV is usually a sign of charger connected, but no battery detected (or very flat) so the device can't start. It crashes as it tried to power up. Try charging for 3+ hours and test again. Check the battery is connected properly too. You've probably tried this but I can't think of anything else right now.
russel mine It sounds like the Nexus 7 has crashed. Try these instructions from Google to reset it. You might also want to try just wiping the cache folders first. That's also in the second menu. If your tablet is on, turn it off. Press and hold the Volume Down button, then press and hold the Power button at the same time until the tablet turns on. You'll see the word "Start" with an arrow around it. Press the Volume Down button twice to highlight "Recovery mode". Press the Power button to start Recovery mode. You'll see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark and the words "No command." While holding down the Power button, press the Volume Up button. Use the volume buttons to scroll to "wipe data/factory reset," then press the Power button to select it. Scroll down to "Yes - erase all user data," then press the Power button to select it. When that complete, use the volume buttons to scroll to "Restart now" then press the Power button to select it. Note: If your tablet becomes unresponsive at any point during these steps, you can restart it by holding down the Power button for several seconds.
PIXscotland That was exactly what happened to me - thanks, man! My Nexus 7 (2012) got dropped (from less than 40cm height) and the screen was black and didn't power back up. Scared the crap out of me... The screen blinked white every other second or looked like random static when I plugged the charging cable in. So I followed your tutorial, unplugged the battery-cable, waited for 10 minutes, plugged it back in and the tablet powered back up without problems. Worked like a charm and I can't thank you enough!
My first gen Nexus 7 wasn't holding a charge, charging slow, almost not at all. I opened it and reset the battery as well as tightened a loose screw near the micro usb plug. I left the battery unplugged to completely drain, and left it to charge over night. Well, it got up to 54% charge, but will then discharge, charge up a bit, discharge a bit over and over again, even in airplane mode. I haven't even used it for a week, just charging it. It's getting worse. Is it dead? Do I need to spend half the price of a brand new one on a new battery?
It does sound like the battery has failed. They are pretty easily available, but without another way to confirm the battery is actually the fault they're a bit expensive to simply buy in the hope we're right. I use this free app to monitor my battery use. It might be worth trying this and checking the battery voltage etc in hope it prove the fault. play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fsinib.batterymonitor&hl=en
Thanks, I'll give it a try. Those (good) batteries are nearly half the cost of new, I'd probably try replacing the usb/jack system first to see if the connector pins were bent too badly. Which I can do now, TYVM!
My nexus 7 died a couple of days ago and never turned back on again, I've tried charging it for almost a day and turning it on by holding both buttons, nothing. Then I tried this tutorial, still nothing, shall I give up and buy a new one?
+Eleanor Hicks It's difficult without testing it to see if the battery is getting charged. Many of these machines fail because the microUSB is weak (They all are) and the device isn't charged. if you had a dock available you could try that. Maybe try using a USB current detector to see if there's any power going to the device. Can you measure the voltage at the battery (The Red and black wires)? There should be more than 3.7v and this should get up to 4.2v when charged.
I have a Nexus 4 and enable the WIFI tethering on that. The Nexus 7 simply connects to that as it would to any WIFI device. It is also possible to tether through Bluetooth but I've never done that. Hopefully that answers your question.
mate geesh your making a huge deal about a 1mm space between the side of battery and battery compartment let it go already Mate. Its not gonna move and rip the connector loose LOL!!! LITTLE OCD are we. I understand that but Mate you aint gonna be running or throwing the tablet high in the air which may may may may probably not but may make it move 1mm my GOSH! Thx
+Devin Henderson You're welcome to that opinion, but it's known to be wrong. The battery movement does pull the cables loose, the device will then not charge or lose battery power completely. I'd love to show the documentary evidence of this but I can't for personal reasons. I'm sorry you think I and all other videos on this subject are wrong. Thanks for watching and for the comment.
My Nexus 7 battery was taking very little of a charge so I purchased a new battery. The battery was at 50% when I installed it. I watched a video which ran it down to 2%. I then powered it off and plugged it in for the night. (The charging symbol was showing when I plugged it in) I checked it this morning and it still says 2%. The battery symbol still shows up to tell me its charging. Any ideas? I don't think I could have purchased a bad battery because it came to me with a 50% charge. I also have 2 different chargers and the results are no different. They both seem to be working.
I have a Nexus 7 that I have had to replace the charging port on and reset to factory settings. Now it will charge and power up but the google emblem comes up followed by 4 rotating colored balls that just rotate and rotate. Nothing else happens. Any suggestions?
+Penny Lozon Can you get into recovery mode using the Volume Down and Power buttons? If so try a reset in there. If it's still not fixed you might next want to try reloading the firmware. Careful with this though. developers.google.com/android/nexus/images?hl=en
My nexus 7 died and it's not charging at all I even tried charging it for 24+ hours and it is still not charging I tried holding power button.. I tried everything.. Can you give me advise on what to do
To reset your Nexus device please follow these instructions: 1. Press and hold the VOLUME DOWN and POWER buttons. Keep these held until the machine powers OFF and ON again and displays some text. 2. Use the volume UP and DOWN buttons to select RECOVERY MODE. Press POWER to select this. 3. The device will reboot and display NO COMMAND. 4. Press and release quickly, the POWER and VOLUME UP buttons. Do not hold these for too long or the device will power off. 5. Select WIPE DATA/FACTORY RESET using the UP and DOWN buttons. Press POWER to select this. 6. Now select YES using the UP and DOWN buttons. Press POWER to select this. 7. The machine will now delete all data and return to the menu. 8. Select REBOOT NOW (already selected) and press POWER to reboot. 9. After this please setup your device, connect to the internet and run Android update: SETTINGS>ABOUT>SYSTEM UPDATES. 10. The device will also re-download all of your applications from the Google Play Store. If you can't get any response the battery may have become dislodged so try the connector reset in the video too.
Jacky Yang Flickering would suggest the charger alone is trying to power the device and the batter is not connecting fully. Can either of you measure the battery voltage with and without the charger attached?
+Jimmy Spartacus Hi, You shouldn't try to boost the battery as they're quite delicate and really don't like being abused. I'd suggest trying to charge it slowly for a long time. Maybe feeding 100mA into the red/black wires for a few hours Make sure to keep the voltage under 4.2v though. Any higher and you'll have bigger problems. You could use a standard Lithium Ion charger circuit if you wish. This will keep things safe and charge the battery externally. This would do a great job: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-x-Micro-USB-Protected-Lithium-Battery-Charging-Module-LiPo-Charger-TP4056-UK-/401068964191
got it working but then it switched off like it did. any suggestions? i didn't take the tape off to move it just pulled out the battery cords and reconnected them
Caroline Hawke Make sure it's got a good charge in it too. If the connector has been loose the battery may not be charged properly. The battery is sometimes hard to get removed so only do it if the cables appear tight. Be careful near the top end with the connections as there's a circuit board up there.
Charge the device for at least three hours before trying to switch it on please. If it's still dead call Asus, then return to the retailer if possible.
I see your nexus 7 is working, so all this video does is point to the battery connection at the mini USB port, and notes various other items. But you do not remove the battery. At 11 minutes this video is without useful information.
You are welcome to that opinion. Many people who've watched this video and commented freely have found the video very useful. it could have been shorted, more concise or whatever, but the most important point is this video has saved many nexus 7's from failure. Thanks for commenting.

Glad to have been of help!
thank you - this gave my nexus life again !! Really thought it died - big thanks !!
No problem at all. Good to have another one working again.
damn straight forward and I did follow what you said..now my N7 runs damn good
thanks alot dude

wjrasmussen666 The NFC tag has nothing to do with the battery. I was just trying to clarify what the odd component was inside my particular unit.
+wjrasmussen666 I came here to learn about the internals about my Nexus. Not listen to you whine about what is and isn't sidetracking the "convo". You're an idiot for thinking anyone else cares about your agenda. This is his video, he can make whatever comments he wants.
Mines not turn back on can you help me
Hi, do you know how to solve slow charging issue? Mine doesn't fully charged overnight
ty ty ty ty ty ty !! issue resolved :)
Nice one!
Tried all the various key stroke combinations suggested by Google without success. Watched this and thought I would check inside.....found a loose battery connection! Hey presto currently charging long dead battery and working through Andriod updates. Thanks I had almost thrown it away
Perfect!
Thank You
My nexus shows it turning on (the Google logo + "x') but then the screen flickers black and white a few seconds then shuts off. I've tried unplugging the little cabley connecting thing in the back And plugging it back in like you showed but its still doing this? Any suggestions?
Give the Nexus a charge for a 3+ hours and try switching on again.
If it still fails to start you may want to try a factory reset next.
@ William Mantet
I run my Nexus down all the way often as I forget to actually power it off and leave it in my work bag for days.
I regret running the battery all the way down
Thank you!
dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/124161/nexus7connectorOnTH-cam.jpg
Just posted pictures of the inside of my nexus

It would be worth trying to get the connector loose and reseat it.
Can you upload a photo of the connector too? Your's sounds weird. :-/
PIXscotland Sorry I can't get the picture to appear, do you have an email i can send it to?
Send it to my "spammy" account. I'll pick it up later tonight. :-)
PIXscotland
Cheers
@ Cathryn Brown
The battery can instantly stop working if the battery believes it is failing.
My ensues 7 goes to google then to four dots fang then Google the dots then Google over and over what's wrong

It sounds like the Nexus 7 has crashed.
You'll see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark and the words "No command."
While holding down the Power button, press the Volume Up button.
Slightest tap on mine and it would switch off - reinserted the battery connector, problem disappeared
Good to hear another one is saved. :-)
Will this be similar for a Nexus 10 having these problems?
I can't speak about the nexus 10. This link may be able to help.
www.ifixit.com/Device/Nexus_10
To add on I've tried many different chargers
Hey, can you tell me a bit more about the tethering 3g on the Nexus 7 (Wi-Fi version)
I have a Nexus 4 and enable the WIFI tethering on that. The Nexus 7 simply connects to that as it would to any WIFI device.
It is also possible to tether through Bluetooth but I've never done that.
Hopefully that answers your question.
Oh OK fair enough, sorry bit new to all of this, but I'll drop a sub, really like your content, thanks!
Jack Peters No problem at all. Feel free to ask any questions.
So 11 minutes just to say, the plug comes loose, tape it down?
Thanks man
mate geesh your making a huge deal about a 1mm space between the side of battery and battery compartment let it go already Mate. Its not gonna move and rip the connector loose LOL!!! LITTLE OCD are we. I understand that but Mate you aint gonna be running or throwing the tablet high in the air which may may may may probably not but may make it move 1mm my GOSH! Thx
+Devin Henderson
You're welcome to that opinion, but it's known to be wrong.
Check the connector is seated correctly. Unplug and replug it to see how things change.
I have a Nexus 7 that I have had to replace the charging port on and reset to factory settings. Now it will charge and power up but the google emblem comes up followed by 4 rotating colored balls that just rotate and rotate. Nothing else happens. Any suggestions?
Does it do that after a full reset?
that's odd.
Did you upgrade to android 5?
that can cause problems on the nexus 7.
+PIXscotland No I have not upgraded.
+Penny Lozon Can you get into recovery mode using the Volume Down and Power buttons?
If so try a reset in there. If it's still not fixed you might next want to try reloading the firmware.
Careful with this though.

My nexus 7 died and it's not charging at all I even tried charging it for 24+ hours and it is still not charging I tried holding power button.. I tried everything.. Can you give me advise on what to do
To reset your Nexus device please follow these instructions:
9. After this please setup your device, connect to the internet and
run Android update: SETTINGS>ABOUT>SYSTEM UPDATES.
10. The device will also re-download all of your applications from the
Google Play Store.
If you can't get any response the battery may have become dislodged so try the connector reset in the video too.
I did exactly what you did, it still flickers and does not turn on:(
Same here.
Jacky Yang Flickering would suggest the charger alone is trying to power the device and the batter is not connecting fully. Can either of you measure the battery voltage with and without the charger attached?
If your battery gets low not be used for a while u can jump start battery
+Jimmy Spartacus
Hi,
You shouldn't try to boost the battery as they're quite delicate and really don't like being abused.
This would do a great job:
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-x-Micro-USB-Protected-Lithium-Battery-Charging-Module-LiPo-Charger-TP4056-UK-/401068964191
awesome thanks, cool accent too btw
got it working but then it switched off like it did. any suggestions? i didn't take the tape off to move it just pulled out the battery cords and reconnected them
Caroline Hawke Make sure it's got a good charge in it too. If the connector has been loose the battery may not be charged properly. The battery is sometimes hard to get removed so only do it if the cables appear tight. Be careful near the top end with the connections as there's a circuit board up there.
Mine's right out of the box and it doesn't work, I've tried everything. Frustrating
Charge the device for at least three hours before trying to switch it on please.
If it's still dead call Asus, then return to the retailer if possible.
My tablet doesnt charge it charge then doesnt then it does then it doesnt when i check it has between 0 to 12
I see your nexus 7 is working, so all this video does is point to the battery connection at the mini USB port, and notes various other items. But you do not remove the battery.
At 11 minutes this video is without useful information.
You are welcome to that opinion. Many people who've watched this video and commented freely have found the video very useful. it could have been shorted, more concise or whatever, but the most important point is this video has saved many nexus 7's from failure. Thanks for commenting.
like your accent :)
A nice wee Edinburgh one it is too. :-)
no battery was removed in this video
hi
