He is a professor of the department of civil engineering at the graduate school of engineering, the University of Tokyo. He also serves as an executive director of "i.school", the school of innovation, and promete knowledge structuring as a head of Center of Knowledge Structuring of the University of Tokyo.

　東京大学大学院工学系研究科社会基盤学専攻、国際プロジェクト研究室教授。また、イノベーションの学校「東京大学i.school」エグゼクティブ・ディレクターとして運­営統括をし、東京大学知の構造化センターではセンター長として知の構造化技術の活用により新しい価値を創造する活動を推進している。
　今回、TEDxUTokyoでは21世紀の行政・産業・学術をリードする人材に不可欠な「人間中心のイノベーション」とは何か、またそれを生み出す新しい教育のあり方につ­いて語りかける。日本には、明治維新、戦後復興に次ぐ第三の軌跡が必要であるとされている。そうした第三の軌跡を起こすのは、技術革新では無く、人間を中心としたイノベー­ションである。彼は、そうした第三の軌跡を起こしうる人物育成の為に、東京大学i.schoolを設立し、イノベーション教育につとめている。
