I really love that pause, allowing Hayley's voice to really shine in the song, more so than the actual version. And since he's never heard it before, he pretty much figured "alright, other instruments stopped playing, i'll stop too"
I could watch Dirk play all day…. Great drummer and greater person. So genuinely interested in working with all genres. Why do I love his versions so much? He changed it from pop-punk to punk ballad.
That style over the solo was really cool. Definitely shows off more, but still respectful of the guitar. From a guitar guy, it's really underappreciated when the drummer doesn't try to step on toes.
Love your thoughts & enthusiasm going over these Drumeo blind attempts. Dirk is particularly good at these, & has a great outlook on getting to the stage where he can step in & lay down a usable pass with minimal time to practise. Great stuff. :)
"I feel so old watching this..." Buckle in kid! Shit gets WILD when you wake up hurting in places you never thought you could hurt. When someone says something about the 90's I still keep thinking it was like ten years ago.
I was so surprised when I saw that they posted it. I'm the one that requested Dirk play Misery Business, but I didn't think Drumeo actually read their messages, let alone would listen to mine. He learned it extremely quickly. But I'm glad he did it!
I think of all the drumeo performances, I absolutely adore what You pointed out, and I don't think it's highlighted enough - that guy is SO freaking consistent and satisfying to listen with his approach to structure! It makes my OCD so happy
I'm so glad musicians are starting to get to share their creative process, this stuff takes a majority of their lives and most people take it for granted
I'd love to see your reaction to either of the Larnel Lewis Drumeo vids - they were early in the current format, so for one they made a song for him without a drum track, had him listen and recorded his one and only attempt, and the other, he covers Enter Sandman with the drum track and have him try to replicate it. Both are pretty amazing, and I think you'd enjoy geeking out over his kit as well.
Drumming to songs blind really seem to work quite nicely as a training tool. Have you ever watched The8BitDrummer (btw would be cool to have a react video about him)? He has got so much better at improvising beats and fills and just keeping up with songs on the fly trough the years
7:20 was in his notes: those were the notes on the right hand side! He had that planned from the moment he heard it, so cool. Great reaction btw: some very cool insight!
I have nothing but respect for him! I was just saying that the complexity of his fills is wild! Have you ever thrown a drum kit down the stairs? There are a lot of hits happening very quickly! 🤣
That pause where the drummer would be silent for a sec before going to a last chorus or (second to last) is actually not common in metal at all. Especially in thrash, speed or death metal the drummer usually gets no breaks. It's common in pop variants of many genres like pop punk or pop metal.. even drum n bass, to let the vocalist have a full solo moment like that as a "beat drop" moment. So I think he was actually trying to guess what this pop rock band would have done, but simply guessed wrong. In most metal genres the drummer is almost never silent unless you're trying to invoke a non-metal element like a choir or church organ or an acoustic guitar in the middle of the song, but it's pretty rare. Black metal does it a lot where the drummer stops playing for a moment to let the guitars and bass break into a separate melody, but usually then the vocalist is also silent.
It'd be cool to see you check out some of Dirk's original stuff with his previous bands like Soilwork, Devin Townsend, Scarve, Sybreed, etc. He's got a ton of play-through videos on youtube. Good on him for landing the Megadeth gig, but IMO when he was able to go full throttle with those other bands his creativity was really special. Also, he has a blast beat technique named after him (the "Dirk Blast"), which is just neat!
Most parts are just different in his version which are cool and I don’t prefer one over the other but I LOVE the half time through the solo. Such a cool vibe!
@@konger6069 ahhh… that’s a good catch, I only noticed Dirk. Maybe they did film these in the same session but knew they’d be released a year apart so he referred to it that way?
Funny you mentioned EES. He has a cover of this song (one of my favourites) where he has that consistency of sound throughout the song with some ridiculous fills. Couldn't recommend more for a reaction video
@@coversandcommentary for what it’s worth, I think you’ve improved tremendously in this area from where you started. I definitely get the challenge of wanting to comment while also not wanting to pause every 5 seconds, though the pausing never bothers me. And as I mentioned on one of your earlier reactions, you have a lot of interesting and intelligent things to say, so you *should* be pausing and talking throughout.
If you don’t enjoy the talking, you can always watch the original. This is a reaction/review video. I think his insight brings a nice element to the video. I don’t think anyone here hasn’t already watched the drumeo version.
I usually dont like alot of talking also but since he's a drummer I want his insights, feedbacks, comments about the video so it's one of those instances I would allow talking. I subbed because of that.
I’ve watched the original Drumeo video multiple times. I’m not watching a reaction video just to see the same video with some doofus bobbing their head to it. I appreciate reactors that have intelligent insight to add, and this guy’s experience as a studio drummer positions him to do just that.
The video did soar to 14k in 7 days. People want commentary and explanations about why drummers do certain things or what techniques are being used. Just “sitting pretty” is content thievery, and I don’t condone that. 😁
@@coversandcommentary 14k is good, I'd still recommend an update on the technique breakdown and commentary portion (ex- Paramore react had over 15 pauses, that's a lot and a 25 min runtime) - do check out 'Tank the tech' channel as he does songs reaction, gear and tech breakdown with a good combo of minimal pauses, engaging commentary, occasionally sitting pretty and head banging to killer tunes... winning combo. check out his channel and could give you some new ideas.
@@akshaygopinath9114 dude, Tank pauses plenty. Seriously, if you just want to hear the song uninterrupted, go listen to the original. But then again, I hate “reactors” that just sit and listen to a song while occasionally throwing out an ooh, ahh, or “amazing”. That’s “content” that has no purpose for existing.
I really love that pause, allowing Hayley's voice to really shine in the song, more so than the actual version. And since he's never heard it before, he pretty much figured "alright, other instruments stopped playing, i'll stop too"
Same here, it was a really nice moment!
I wish this pause was in the real song, so cool
You really helped me appreciate the choices he made as a drummer. Thank you.

as a non drummer i wouldn’t know that this isn’t the real drum part. love these drumeo series 👍🏼

The fact you think of this song being old makes me feel even older.
Bro! I remember learning this song for a battle of the bands contest! That’s what makes it and ME feel old 😂😭

Not gonna lie, would be super interesting to see you on Drumeo someday on this same series
Bucket list stuff! lol
I'd love it too
I think you should do the reaction to Mike Portnoy performing Pneuma in Drumeo next.
And the old one with the Nickelback song!
I love when the masters show us why they’re the masters. Loved your reaction! You always teach me something.
I was big into Dirk when he played for Soilwork and you can hear a lot of his death metal influence in his playing

So crazy Paramore made this album at 17 years old. I also really liked how dropped out at the end to to hear Hayley shine.
I really want to see you reacting to Tosh playing Fireball and both the Portnoy videos playing Nickleback and Pneuma by Tool

You’ve GOTTA watch the Drumeo vid of Tosh Peterson playing Fireball for the first time without knowing the drums, it’s insane
Been waiting for this
The double kicks always get me. Sometimes it feels like I hwant them in every song.
7:20 was in his notes: those were the notes on the right hand side! He had that planned from the moment he heard it, so cool.

put some respect on my boy Paramore’s own Zach Farro, he recorded this song at 17 I believe and still kills it when they play live

I love seeing bad ass drummers from different genres of music putting their spin on songs. Awesome job!!!!

His work on Sybreed's album was sublime! He did some session work for Naglfar as well.
Love these. Hope you get around to doing some of the older ones like ZackGrooves and Kaz Rodriguez. Keep it up!
Love the fit and love the music and this drummer
he's so good
I'm not a drummer but I enjoyed your commentary. Thanks for this!
Anyone ever mentioned you laugh a bit like a double bass? 😂 12:17
I've never heard this song, and his version was so great I wouldn't have known it wasn't the original. This dude is amazing, Megadeath ricks, too!
I really love how he smiles during certain parts. He thoroughly enjoys drumming.

This is my favorite video you've made. More please. Idea.... how about YOU hear a song once and do a video.
I know you have watched The Cost before, but they have just done a performance video with meinl cymbals and they sound amazing please react to them!
