You are classifying "any and all" as public high schools, which have a lower standard of education and aren't so good about giving the full story. However private and charter schools do a much better job at teaching the full story. The same is true in Germany from my experience.

We committed very few war crimes during WW2 in comparison to the USSR or the British Empire, and the majority of them were against German Pilots or Soldiers, people who deserved what they received. Besides, in comparison with other historical events, the annexation of Hawaii and the treatment of natives are not very important in US history, it isn't worth teaching it. Also, curriculum varies from state to state, and it can also vary from school to school, just for your information.

The almost complete loss of the Hawaiian language is one of the biggest losses (to me as a language lover). It would be interesting to hear more about the system of government Hawaii had in place before the Americans came.

As someone who has lived in Hawai'i their whole life, I can tell you that the culture is one of the most amazing parts of living here. If you have ever been to Hawai'i (and I mean really been, like full Johnny style, immersing yourself in the culture and not just staying at a resort) then you know how loving and kind and incredible the people here are. My family used to run a Bed and Breakfast before the recent lava flow took out our home, and this was by far the most common reason people stated for wanting to return someday. With the recent protests on the Mauna, and ongoing struggle to keep sacred lands safe on Kaho'olawe, Pōhakuloa, and many many more places, it has created a way for the entire world to see how hurt and outraged Native Hawaiians are by everything the US has done to them. While they are some of the most resilient people I have ever known, it is hard. It is really really hard to see how the government doesn't care much about giving the people what they want. In a way, it is similar to what is happening in the BLM protests right now, as higher ups are giving people supplemental things, but not really what they want. A great example is the state that Kaho'olawe was left in when it was returned to the Hawaiian people. The island was supposed to be completely cleared of ordnance left by the US Navy. They were given 10 years, and get this, 400 million dollars. They only cleared 75% of the island, and many parts are still left highly dangerous to this day. Not to mention, the water table was literally broken. There is no fresh water on Kaho'olawe because the Navy put enough TNT on it to simulate an atomic bomb. That's not a joke, that was actually their intention. So after some ranting, I hope you learned something. The Hawaiian people are over being stomped on by the US. Period. Kaho'olawe was technically made uninhabitable or at least barren because of goats. But yes, those bombs are awful. Unexploded ordnance is not fun. My parents were from Laos, the most bombed country in the world (because the ho chi mihn trail was built there). There are numerous times where kids today are maimed because of the bombs. Maybe it's just me, but I can't say the culture in hawaii is perfect or even all that loving, depending on who you are. There is blatant racism that is unspoken in Hawaii (can you guess?). My mom is from Ireland and when I talk about colonialism she sometimes gives me the same BS, even when I say it's not the same because Ireland has independence. Going by your username, is Kaneohe your homeland? It’s devastating when Native Hawaiians can’t even afford to live on their own rightful land. So many of my Native Hawaiian friends moved to the mainland, especially to Las Vegas area. What is Hawaii without the Native people and their culture there? I look at the recent Kakaako/Ward theater area’s gentrification and can’t help but feel sad seeing so little local businesses/people and lots of foreign and mainland US folks buying the high rise condos as their summer homes/second homes. It reminds me a lot of New Zealand’s housing situation. I have to remind myself I’m technically in Hawaii when I walk through the new Whole Foods there. Aloha Look, I get what you’re saying, but at this point, there’s generations of non Hawaiians that call Hawaii home. I’m a haole, but I was born and raised in Hawaii, as was my mom, grandparents and great grandparents. My family has been here since WW1, and as much as the history of Hawaii and the subjugation of its people breaks my heart, especially knowing that my ancestors likely participated in it in some way or another, it’s still my home and always will be. All I can do is respect the land and culture and try my best to right some of the wrongs of the past.

Because the Hawaiian Language (we know it as Olelo) was outlawed in schools, and due to increasing pressures to become westernized and so called "normal," we lost alot of the cultural nuances that connects us to the ancient version of our native language. The most authentic Hawaiian you will hear is that spoken by a kupuna (elder) who is fluent (which is rare), or by someone born and raised on Niihau (also rare). It's similar Tahitian and Samoan. The language taught in Hawaiian language immersive schools is much different, and is not the same as the ancient tongue which has been an unfortunate result of the language-shaming in the early 1900s. Because Hawaiians did not write, we only passed on knowledge by story telling and by doing, we lost alot of our culture. I'm nearly 40 and have only just started learning things that my ancestors did, which is sad when you think about it. We've had to struggle to piece back together incomplete pieces of our culture so that we can revitalize our people, but it's a process and arguably we lost much of our ancient knowledge. It's only through those stubborn ones like those who kept practicing the old ways like Hula or crafts, or traditional fishing who keep the cultural flame alive for us try and move the ball forward one yard at a time (painstakingly). How shame right? We have to reinvent our culture in a way and connect the dots. With all of that said, besides the over-tourism, the biggest slap in our face these days is when people of non-native blood name their children Hawaiian names: those are our names and they cannot begin to understand the vast meanings which each name (long or short) has. We consider it disrespectful and most names have multiple meanings, including negative ones.

The waves reminded me of California. Some Hawaiians came up to me and told me to leave. I was dumbfounded by their aggressive demeanor. I argued with them until I finally left. I was just a sad dude enjoying the waves. I’m going to start telling Hawaiians to go back to Hawaii whenever I see them on the mainland. I’ll be honest, I freaking hate Hawaii. Tourism paints a pretty picture and Hollywood does too. I will never want to step foot on any island in Hawaii.

I think it’s a good idea to refer the visitors to this video. In fact when I was watching it I thought to myself that this would be a good video to explain things in a way that most haoles would understand. There’s a lot more to Hawai’i history and the overthrow but this does a good job of touching on the main points. BTW, thank you for taking time to explain Hawai’i to our visitors, even if some of them get defensive, you are giving the others the gift of your knowledge and experience. Aloha.

@TheMauisbest, may I suggest the book “Unfamiliar Fishes” by Sarah Vowell. The audiobook is also great. It is really fun history of Hawaii that acknowledges the fucked up colonialism and the beauty of the culture.

@John Freddy We can talk about any part of Hawaii's history. We have to look at ALL perspectives to understand the real history. That way, we can remain objective and fair. History isn't simple, cut and dry and black and white. It's often complex and messy.
I visited Hawaii (specifically Maui) last July. I was completely unaware of the history at the time, but seeing American building styles carving the land felt almost disgusting. The natives can't even afford to stay in their own homes, and thus you can often find them on the streets. I loved Hawaii, but damn, the US really did screw them over and if you aren't completely ignorant, you can see it down every street. Even if American rule is no longer a thing in the future, the damage we have done is irreversible.

Then the Tahitians came, took over all the islands, instituted a feudal caste system and oppressed the maka'āinana with harsh kapu religous law. He STOLE all the āina, mana and wealth for HIS _Kingdom_ of *Hawai'i.* He was a warlord and an imperialist. His aumakua was the god of war, Kū. And wage war he did. There's a very good reason why the island chain is called _Hawai'i_ and the Big Island is also called _Hawai'i._ ;) The haole have never fought any wars with Hawai'i or the kanaka maoli. @@pakelika100 Kamehameha steamrolled the islands and threatened Kauai. Kauai yielded because of intimidation. Later, Kaumualii (who was the former mo'i) tried to form an alliance with _Russia_ to liberate his kingdom. The Russians built several forts, but the plan was abandoned (failed) after Kaumualii found out that 1) the Russians didn't have the backing of the Tsar and 2) Kamehameha wasn't happy with what was going on there ;)

I know your video couldn’t be too long but you really covered some of the main points. There’s also so much more to this that makes it even more insane. But I really did like your video.
I agree, there was a great deal of historical information that was intentionally omitted and withheld to push a slanted, personal narrative. It's insane. The revolution of January 17, 1893 was caused by Queen Liliuokalani's attempt to prorogate the legislature, unilaterally create a new constitution (without the constitutional power to do so), promulgate this new constitution with a sudden declaration (surprise!) and use the military to suppress any opposition to her power grab. On January 14, she was ready to sign and proclaim the new laws. She wrote to Blount that the "members of the diplomatic corps had been invited; also the members of the supreme bench and members of the legislature, besides a committee of the Hui Kalaiaina." She also told Blount that she instructed her guards and military to be ready to suppress any challenge (riots, rebellion, etc) from her opposition: "They assured me they would be ready, and I gave strict injunctions of secrecy." The Queen had been secretly plotting a revolution to overthrow the government and reestablish an absolute monarchy. Then everyone found about her 'secret' plan. Everything went downhill fast for her. People weren't going to curtsy, sit idly and let her smile and wave as she led a revolution. Her opposition mobilized, organized and overthrew her with their own revolution. And the rest is history. Like I said, Queen Lili instigated her own overthrow, despite the advice of her own cabinet and supporters. She was an inexperienced, naive leader who thought she could make sweeping (illegal) changes via royal proclamation. Governor Cleghorn was a royalist, ally and _brother-in-law_ of Queen Liliuokalani. He was angry and disappointed by her plot to overthrow the government and failure to listen to counsel. On January 28, 1893, he wrote "I have never given the Queen anything but good advice. If she had followed my advice, she would have been firm on the throne, and Hawaiian Independence safe, but she has turned out a very stubborn woman and was not satisfied to Reign but wished to Rule." Queen Lili kicked a hornets nest and was stung by her own arrogance. She cost the country its independence. American Minister Stevens was following the instructions of his predecessor, Minister Miller, who received instructions from the Secretary of State of the first _President Cleveland_ Administration. Cleveland was president during the Bayonet Constitution of 1887. Secretary of State Thomas F. Bayard sent written instructions to then American Minister George W. Merrill that if another revolution happens in Hawaii, then they must protect American commerce, lives and property. Bayard clearly stated that, "the assistance of the officers of our Government vessels, if found necessary, will therefore be promptly afforded to promote the reign of law and respect for orderly government in Hawaii."After the revolution that lead to the Bayonet Constitution, _British_ Minister Wodehouse requested that the Americans keep a warship docked in Hawaiian port in case another revolution happened. In July 1889, there was a rebellion and Merrill ordered the deployment of marines and sailors to protect Americans. John L. Stevens (had replaced Merrill) and followed those official instructions during the overthrow of 1893. The American soldiers were peacekeepers who didn't participate in any government building raids, patrol the streets, fire any shots or provide any material support to the insurgents. Often, the Americans would land, come ashore and practice military drills (prior to the overthrow). During the 1893 revolution, the soldiers marched past Iolani Palace, lowered their flags to show neutrality and saluted the Queen. These are hardly aggressive actions. The Americans then remained in their bunkers and did absolutely nothing because no violence broke out against American interests. There was no invasion or military occupation. The monarchy was overthrown by a homegrown coup of 1,100-1,600 insurgents (who were citizens and royal subjects), Queen Liliuokalani surrendered and abdicated her power WITHOUT fighting to defend her country from internal, domestic threats, which was her constitutional duty as a monarch.
Amazing? It's not accurate history. The US Gov't did not 'agree' with the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy and 'revolutionaries' were ordered by Cleveland to return the Islands to the Monarchy. They ignored him and formed a Republic.

If you can, get a hold of a copy of Lorrin Thurston's Memoirs of the Hawaiian Revolution, or Tom Coffman's Nation Within: The History of the Occupation of Hawaii. Thurston is a primary source/witness who conspired with US Minister Stevens to overthrow the Hawaiian government. In May, 1892 he, Thurston, went to Washington DC to ascertain the Harrison administration's attitude towards overthrowing the Hawaiian government and annexing Hawaii. He was very encouraged by Harrison's message to him. Coffman's book is meticulously researched from primary and verifiable secondary sources and is annotated with source citations.

There is no United States or International Law of 1898 that declares a treaty _(and only a treaty)_ can be used for annexation of foreign land. The U.S. has aquired foreign land in many different ways, which shows that joint resolution was part of established customs and norms. ✔ The Republic of Hawaii requested to be annexed by the United States. The Hawaiian legislature unanimously agreed to annexation and passed their Treaty of Annexation. ✔ On the U.S. side, the President wanted annexation, and two-thirds of the Senate AND two-thirds of the House of Representatives voted for annexation by passing the Newlands Resolution. Since both Houses ratified the Resolution with a TWO-THIRDS majority, it exceeds the criteria of Treaty. ✔ The Treaty of Annexation (Hawaii) and the Newlands Resolution (United States) are two documents, related and in agreement with one another with a common intent to bind both parties in a _BILATERAL_ agreement. This met the legal requirement for a mutually, acceptable agreement. Moreover, Hawai'i and the United States abided by this agreement and behaved accordingly. That further reinforces the agreement because it shows common acceptance and practice. They defined the treaty and followed it. ✔ The U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations delivered the Morgan Report on February 26, 1894, which refuted the Blount Report and exonerated the actions of the U.S. military. There are several good books on the history of Hawai'i written by Hawaiians would lived through it that tell a much different, more nuanced story. You are classifying "any and all" as public high schools, which have a lower standard of education and aren't so good about giving the full story. We committed very few war crimes during WW2 in comparison to the USSR or the British Empire, and the majority of them were against German Pilots or Soldiers, people who deserved what they received. Also, curriculum varies from state to state, and it can also vary from school to school, just for your information.

As someone who has lived in Hawai'i their whole life, I can tell you that the culture is one of the most amazing parts of living here. If you have ever been to Hawai'i (and I mean really been, like full Johnny style, immersing yourself in the culture and not just staying at a resort) then you know how loving and kind and incredible the people here are. My family used to run a Bed and Breakfast before the recent lava flow took out our home, and this was by far the most common reason people stated for wanting to return someday. With the recent protests on the Mauna, and ongoing struggle to keep sacred lands safe on Kaho'olawe, Pōhakuloa, and many many more places, it has created a way for the entire world to see how hurt and outraged Native Hawaiians are by everything the US has done to them. While they are some of the most resilient people I have ever known, it is hard. It is really really hard to see how the government doesn't care much about giving the people what they want. In a way, it is similar to what is happening in the BLM protests right now, as higher ups are giving people supplemental things, but not really what they want. A great example is the state that Kaho'olawe was left in when it was returned to the Hawaiian people. The island was supposed to be completely cleared of ordnance left by the US Navy. They were given 10 years, and get this, 400 million dollars. They only cleared 75% of the island, and many parts are still left highly dangerous to this day. Not to mention, the water table was literally broken. There is no fresh water on Kaho'olawe because the Navy put enough TNT on it to simulate an atomic bomb. That's not a joke, that was actually their intention. So after some ranting, I hope you learned something. The Hawaiian people are over being stomped on by the US. Period.

Kaho'olawe was technically made uninhabitable or at least barren because of goats. But yes, those bombs are awful. Unexploded ordnance is not fun. My parents were from Laos, the most bombed country in the world (because the ho chi mihn trail was built there). There are numerous times where kids today are maimed because of the bombs.
Maybe it's just me, but I can't say the culture in hawaii is perfect or even all that loving, depending on who you are. There is blatant racism that is unspoken in Hawaii (can you guess?). The U.S. didn't ban hula. Hula was banned by Queen Ka'ahumanu in 1830 (because nudity was frowned upon by Christians), but most people didn't listen. Hula was still practiced privately and even publicly practiced, but with clothes. It was a loose 'ban'. In 1874, King Kalākau welcomed hula officially back into the palace.
Land was always a problem. Before the Hawaiian Kingdom existed, the ali'i classes owned and controlled all the land. The maka'āinana were just feudal serfs. During the Hawaiian Kingdom, the ali'i and wealthy people still owned most of the land. The Great Māhele was a land policy failure. Now, the same problems exist. The U.S. didn't create a land problem... BUT they can definitely make things better.

Going by your username, is Kaneohe your homeland? It’s devastating when Native Hawaiians can’t even afford to live on their own rightful land. So many of my Native Hawaiian friends moved to the mainland, especially to Las Vegas area. What is Hawaii without the Native people and their culture there? I look at the recent Kakaako/Ward theater area’s gentrification and can’t help but feel sad seeing so little local businesses/people and lots of foreign and mainland US folks buying the high rise condos as their summer homes/second homes. It reminds me a lot of New Zealand’s housing situation. I have to remind myself I’m technically in Hawaii when I walk through the new Whole Foods there. It is vastly different from the Kakaako I remember..from the Kakaako the Native Hawaiians and their ancestors remember…Driving through Laie I see plenny “keep Hawaii Hawaiian” and “keep the country country” signs.. Aloha Look, I get what you’re saying, but at this point, there’s generations of non Hawaiians that call Hawaii home. I’m a haole, but I was born and raised in Hawaii, as was my mom, grandparents and great grandparents. My family has been here since WW1, and as much as the history of Hawaii and the subjugation of its people breaks my heart, especially knowing that my ancestors likely participated in it in some way or another, it’s still my home and always will be. All I can do is respect the land and culture and try my best to right some of the wrongs of the past.

Because the Hawaiian Language (we know it as Olelo) was outlawed in schools, and due to increasing pressures to become westernized and so called "normal," we lost alot of the cultural nuances that connects us to the ancient version of our native language. The most authentic Hawaiian you will hear is that spoken by a kupuna (elder) who is fluent (which is rare), or by someone born and raised on Niihau (also rare). It's similar Tahitian and Samoan. The language taught in Hawaiian language immersive schools is much different, and is not the same as the ancient tongue which has been an unfortunate result of the language-shaming in the early 1900s. Because Hawaiians did not write, we only passed on knowledge by story telling and by doing, we lost alot of our culture. I'm nearly 40 and have only just started learning things that my ancestors did, which is sad when you think about it. We've had to struggle to piece back together incomplete pieces of our culture so that we can revitalize our people, but it's a process and arguably we lost much of our ancient knowledge. It's only through those stubborn ones like those who kept practicing the old ways like Hula or crafts, or traditional fishing who keep the cultural flame alive for us try and move the ball forward one yard at a time (painstakingly). How shame right? We have to reinvent our culture in a way and connect the dots. With all of that said, besides the over-tourism, the biggest slap in our face these days is when people of non-native blood name their children Hawaiian names: those are our names and they cannot begin to understand the vast meanings which each name (long or short) has. We consider it disrespectful and most names have multiple meanings, including negative ones.

I was just a sad dude enjoying the waves. I’m going to start telling Hawaiians to go back to Hawaii whenever I see them on the mainland.

I mahalo you for telling our story🤙🤙🤙 I am a tour guide Here on island.. And I myself share this story because most people don't know.. And when I share what happen After you answer a million questions of how could that be my country wouldn't do that.. Some folks create a weird vibe specially for the ones who don't understand.. See knowledge is power and when one feels that they have no knowledge of this most people go into defence... it's funny because they are the one who asked a question on when Hawaii became a state in how did it become... then go on to say...oh aren't you folks so lucky the US took over and it goes into a whole thing this put me in a position where I feel like I have the right to defend my people and my place of home so anyway.....
So the next time someone asks me a question i will just refer to this very video... Thank you for all of the facts an photos.. This will let me take a step out of the situation and the information will be there easily for them to understand and hopefully here forward I will never be put in another uncomfortable situation to do with this subject... I think it’s a good idea to refer the visitors to this video. In fact when I was watching it I thought to myself that this would be a good video to explain things in a way that most haoles would understand. There’s a lot more to Hawai’i history and the overthrow but this does a good job of touching on the main points. BTW, thank you for taking time to explain Hawai’i to our visitors, even if some of them get defensive, you are giving the others the gift of your knowledge and experience. Aloha.

I visited Hawaii (specifically Maui) last July. I was completely unaware of the history at the time, but seeing American building styles carving the land felt almost disgusting. The natives can't even afford to stay in their own homes, and thus you can often find them on the streets. I loved Hawaii, but damn, the US really did screw them over and if you aren't completely ignorant, you can see it down every street. Even if American rule is no longer a thing in the future, the damage we have done is irreversible.

Later, Kaumualii (who was the former mo'i) tried to form an alliance with _Russia_ to liberate his kingdom. The Russians built several forts, but the plan was abandoned (failed) after Kaumualii found out that 1) the Russians didn't have the backing of the Tsar and 2) Kamehameha wasn't happy with what was going on there ;)
As someone who has a degree in Hawaiian History and teaches the subject, I can easily say you did a really good job. I know your video couldn’t be too long but you really covered some of the main points. There’s also so much more to this that makes it even more insane. But I really did like your video.
I agree, there was a great deal of historical information that was intentionally omitted and withheld to push a slanted, personal narrative. It's insane. The revolution of January 17, 1893 was caused by Queen Liliuokalani's attempt to prorogate the legislature, unilaterally create a new constitution (without the constitutional power to do so), promulgate this new constitution with a sudden declaration (surprise!) and use the military to suppress any opposition to her power grab. On January 14, she was ready to sign and proclaim the new laws. She wrote to Blount that the "members of the diplomatic corps had been invited; also the members of the supreme bench and members of the legislature, besides a committee of the Hui Kalaiaina." She also told Blount that she instructed her guards and military to be ready to suppress any challenge (riots, rebellion, etc) from her opposition: "They assured me they would be ready, and I gave strict injunctions of secrecy." The Queen had been secretly plotting a revolution to overthrow the government and reestablish an absolute monarchy.
Then everyone found about her 'secret' plan. Everything went downhill fast for her. People weren't going to curtsy, sit idly and let her smile and wave as she led a revolution. Her opposition mobilized, organized and overthrew her with their own revolution. And the rest is history.
Like I said, Queen Lili instigated her own overthrow, despite the advice of her own cabinet and supporters. She was an inexperienced, naive leader who thought she could make sweeping (illegal) changes via royal proclamation. Governor Cleghorn was a royalist, ally and _brother-in-law_ of Queen Liliuokalani. He was angry and disappointed by her plot to overthrow the government and failure to listen to counsel. On January 28, 1893, he wrote "I have never given the Queen anything but good advice. If she had followed my advice, she would have been firm on the throne, and Hawaiian Independence safe, but she has turned out a very stubborn woman and was not satisfied to Reign but wished to Rule." Queen Lili kicked a hornets nest and was stung by her own arrogance. She cost the country its independence.
American Minister Stevens was following the instructions of his predecessor, Minister Miller, who received instructions from the Secretary of State of the first _President Cleveland_ Administration. Cleveland was president during the Bayonet Constitution of 1887. Secretary of State Thomas F. Bayard sent written instructions to then American Minister George W. Merrill that if another revolution happens in Hawaii, then they must protect American commerce, lives and property. Bayard clearly stated that, "the assistance of the officers of our Government vessels, if found necessary, will therefore be promptly afforded to promote the reign of law and respect for orderly government in Hawaii."After the revolution that lead to the Bayonet Constitution, _British_ Minister Wodehouse requested that the Americans keep a warship docked in Hawaiian port in case another revolution happened. In July 1889, there was a rebellion and Merrill ordered the deployment of marines and sailors to protect Americans. John L. Stevens (had replaced Merrill) and followed those official instructions during the overthrow of 1893.
The American soldiers were peacekeepers who didn't participate in any government building raids, patrol the streets, fire any shots or provide any material support to the insurgents. Often, the Americans would land, come ashore and practice military drills (prior to the overthrow). During the 1893 revolution, the soldiers marched past Iolani Palace, lowered their flags to show neutrality and saluted the Queen. These are hardly aggressive actions. The Americans then remained in their bunkers and did absolutely nothing because no violence broke out against American interests. There was no invasion or military occupation. The monarchy was overthrown by a homegrown coup of 1,100-1,600 insurgents (who were citizens and royal subjects), Queen Liliuokalani surrendered and abdicated her power WITHOUT fighting to defend her country from internal, domestic threats, which was her constitutional duty as a monarch.

Thurston is a primary source/witness who conspired with US Minister Stevens to overthrow the Hawaiian government. In May, 1892 he, Thurston, went to Washington DC to ascertain the Harrison administration's attitude towards overthrowing the Hawaiian government and annexing Hawaii. He was very encouraged by Harrison's message to him. Coffman's book is meticulously researched from primary and verifiable secondary sources and is annotated with source citations.

Sugar doesn't cause diabetes directly. It only does so indirectly by being additional calories that turn into fat, which can then block receptors so insulin can't enter the cells, which in turn increases the concentration of glucose in the blood

There are several good books on the history of Hawai'i written by Hawaiians would lived through it that tell a much different, more nuanced story. Sadly the only accepted point of view to look at History through these days has become "white man bad, native people good" this is just obviously over simplified and wrong. It's sad because it misses to opportunity to use history as a tool to examine ourselves and see what happens when good intentions pave the way to hell.

Johnny Angel Their were atrocities, but not on the scale of the Japanese. On the war part only 20,000 Philippinos died of actual combat, but 500,000 died from disease. But personally I feel that the rape and execution of millions is worse than accidental disease outbreaks.

Thank you so much for this. Our history isn't known to most. My Great Great Grandmother was arrested and spent time in jail because she only knew The Hawaiian Language, and was teaching Hula. Both illegal at the time. When people visit, and the welcome isn't very warm, they ask "wHeRe'S tHe AlOhA sPiRiT?" Well, it's there, but it's dying. We, as a culture, are getting fed up and angry. This past year, tourism was at an all time high, and for an island, that's not a good thing. I, myself has had to move away from my home twice because I was on the verge of homelessness. But i come back everytime because I want to fight to live where I love and was born and raised.

Thank God, King Kalakaua (The Merrie Monarch), brought the hula back to our people. When kanaka maoli end up "houseless" and living on the beach, should we be happy about that? Mega wealthy people, like Mark Zuckerberg and Oprah WInfrey are buying up prime land in Hawaii, while our people are being pushed onto the beaches. If you are Hawaiian or part Hawaiian and own a home, don't sell your home but keep it in the family. Don't give up the fight. An American Indian saying goes like this, "We are on this Earth for a short time, but the rocks live forever" Well, I feel that our culture will also live forever.
