Clutches I have done in the old bikes have three plates to the clutch, the two like you have and a third which is a really thin and flimsy spring/wire ring thing which sits between each set. It's interesting to see that in 40 years clutch design is basically the same!

You failed to mention that the steel plates have a curved face and a flat face similar to a crush washer. You are supposed to put the curved face towards the engine and flat face outwards on all the steels.

I like to use the new gasket, trace it on the cardboard backing and put each bolt where it’s supposed to go to keep track of it. Marker easily comes off.
Its an anti vibration ring, basically a round spring. As you may have seen on this video if you have that ring and the one larger plate in the wrong order it work work correctly.
My clutch is slipping I believe. It shifts fine and take off fine in 1st. But I did a burnout and shifting into 2nd and dragged the clutch a bit and after that i couldn't wheelie in 2nd anymore so I know for a fact something is wrong.. I haven't done an oil change in a while but I should. I was riding for a few hours before the burnout and everything felt perfect. Wheelies and all. My cable seems fine. U think I need to change my plates ?
@@spicy110 I did. And this morning, I checked my adjustment, i messed with it, it started running fine and then I moved it like an idiot and fucked it up again. Now it slips with the adjustment all the way in and out. So it seems like ima have to check the plates. Thanks brother for response
Hehe funny, I did wonder if this was the problem but didn't want to suggest you had overseen that but to be honest clutches can be a bit tricky and for your first go you did great! I've never had a thickness problem with EBC kits but have done with cheaper kits. God what a racket, the locals must love you! 😂

spicy110 Dunno if I have a greater knowledge, I'm self taught too and would always rather give it a go than let someone else do it. Any job is possible if you have the right tools and patience. Yeah keep a eye out for the linch mob! 😂

yeah, I jumped the gun a bit there lol but that can cause problems my dad done his clutch on a Kawasaki ninja zx9r and his kit was short 1 friction and 1 steel but the thickness was bigger. Have you checked the thickness off the old plates to see how far out of spec they are? Nice tip for the bolts by the way, though.
yeah theres nothing worse than a sloppy clutch. So if you wanted to get the max ammount of life out of a drz clutch you could probably go to 30,000miles if you dont do any clutch up wheelies during that time lol.
hi, i have to replace the inner clutch case. is there any trick i have to know before opening it up? i know i have to get all the oil out ... :-) thanks
Err you will probably need a puller to get it off and remember to put the anti-vibration ring in the same orientation when putting back together. That's not a comprehensive list but the things that pop in my head strait off.
Make sure you have enough slack in your clutch cable so your clutch doesn't slip during hard acceleration :) Do a motovlog on the mini bike in the back ground

Can't remember off hand just google drz400 torque specifications and you should be able to find a PDF off with all of the torque values.

If I can recall properly, its backfiring either from overfuelling. It would need remapping on an EFI or rejetting on a carb

all drz 400s have the odd friction plate in the bottom of the basket. i was curious how clean the clutch basket was.

that exhaust backfire can cause by too lean air/fuel mix need to rejet carburetor or lift needle on slide AND spark plug can do backfire

spicy110 also adjust it properly because it can cause extreme pops and crackles through the exhaust. 😂
Lucky you don't need to take the clutch nut off everytime to get to the plates, because that is a pain if you mess up!

those new cluch plates should sink in motor oil over night so they suck oil in they selves and reduce wear on first rides
