The navigation screen goes black or locks up and freezes. The main cause of the problem is a faulty navigation DVD player located in the trunk. It was manufactured by Alpine and needs to be returned to them.
This issue mainly occurs 2005 and 2006 Acura RLs when the components in the acutal DVD player. The DVD player is very easy to remove.
First, remove the trunk carpet and remove the 4 bolts on either side of the DVD player. Kind of a tight squeeze as you have to go by feel but all in all it takes about 15 minutes to remove!
After disconnecting battery, I had the dreaded "Please check disc" locked screen. Multiple attempts removing/reinserting disc...THEN, I tried doing this procedure WITH CAR RUNNING IN IDLE. Remove disc, check for scratches (I had minor scratching on small section of disc but it seems ok), then re-insert disc (orange) while rotating 1/4 turn. It worked! I was prepared to send my unit to the $300+ repair facility. Also, my car is the 2004 Acura RL, with similar navi system. Good luck.

Thanks for making the video! I ended up dropping one of the screws behind the liner.. had to remove more liner.. I bought one off of eBay for $150 with the 4 digit nav code. Waiting to get it in the mail to replace mine in the 2005 RL. Great job!

can you tell me again what you did My screen went into a rainbow color then dark now nothing i read your mesage that you bought another Nav off ebay and replaced it and now your screen work please
Where did u get 4 digit code from???
I don't know but my navigation screen wouldn't work, radio fuse was blown, changed it and it started working again just fine. Radio powers up the dvr drive and navigation system
I knew it wasn't the fuse because it would work sometimes. I did check however and they were all fine. It worked after it was fixed and re installed. But yes definitely check fuses first it's the easiest and cheapest solution 👍
My radio works fine...the display above the nav unit works fine-ish as well, although it occasionally blinks out...loose connection likely. Have to take it apart still...how do I get the nav codes without the nav screen?
Is there no way to replace the DVD with a USB or similar? Also, I'm interested in replacing it with a Garmin and using the android head unit with an app to control climate controls. Wondering how well it will integrate the steering controls...

Found this video almost useless and think he could have helped himself out a lot just by cleaning the crap outta the trunk. WTF! Does he live outta his f’ing trunk? I’m bigger than he is and fit in the trunk without any real issue. It really helps to lay in it while removing those damn connectors as you are doing it pretty blind and the release lever for them is really difficult to push hard enough to release the connectors!

My Gps is working on and off. DVD does not read sometimes. Are you suspecting the unit is faulty? I just updated brand new map from Acura

my navi screen goes between the screen to put code in and black...i cant get it to light up again unless i turn off and turn on the car again....radio works. 05 RL. previous owner replaced screen, i cant punch in any codes i try buttons on dash and touch screen...any help would be much appreciated thanks! p.s your rear window reset worked like a charm! lol thank you!
Theres a DVD unit in the trunk of the RL that controls the screen. If you have a grey or black screen than the DVD unit in the trunk is faulty and bad. It needs to be replaced or fixed. Theres a video on my channel talking exactly about your problem.

Charlie Mendez if the previous owner or the original dealer didn’t leave it in the car or on the manual you have to call Acura and give them the vin number and they should be able to give you the code

Ok I just had that problem as well last week.
I went to Honda dealership and got the radio and nav code in 5 min for free.
The codes are on the fuse box under the hood

@@stephon07104 Hey I think its cuz new screen needs a special adapter, i dont think it's a fuse. I was told if I put the original deck back in everything should work...but I'm going to a place to find out if its just adapter but most threads online say it's a prob with the alpine unit in the trunk. I'll update post when I know what it is
