  • It's finally here, the Manual Transmission Supra we all asked for. But we worried that the feel of the manual might let us down. A drive on a backroad and the track allow us to really see if this has been worth the wait.

      Toyota has some of the most egregious dealers that stack on absurd markup (as a %), and there are also ones that are happy to take a few hundred and let you sit on a list with hundreds of others when they know they’re only getting a few dozen allocations for the year. If you have to buy a car now it is what it is, try to find a deal for current market, but if you already have something fun and can wait I wouldn’t even bother for 2-3 years. Maybe just spend some $ on some upgrades or going on a road trip. Buying new cars right now should only be done under actual necessity or if you are high earner/independently wealthy and the $ doesn’t hurt or matter to you, but you know what they say, you don’t get rich by spending money (at sleazy dealers, ADAB).

    The Supra is perfect in many ways despite what the internet says. It's a knock out in the performance department. If there's only one big improvement this car needs is to address the buffeting when driving with the windows down or offer a removable top like the MKIV Supra.

    I think I'm done trying to buy from dealerships. They are completely out of control with markups. I called a Nissan dealer to ask the price of a Proto Spec Z that was in their showroom and they replied "we are taking offers" like it was a house or something. So they are taking offers on a car that has a $52,990 MSRP. They can keep it as far as I'm concerned.

    Honestly, Toyota needs to hold their dealers accountable and stop the ADMs. It's going to hurt Toyota and sales. Force them to sell these at MSRP and more ppl will put deposits and buy them. The auto Supra is pretty popular at least in NYC. I see them quite often so ppl do like them.

    • @korrosiv3
      @korrosiv3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why would they? I’d love for these cars to be retail price just as much as the next guy trust me. But if they’re constantly selling out for 8-10k above msrp it would just be bad business put an artificial market cap on the price

    • @Kamukix
      @Kamukix ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@korrosiv3 Toyota doesn't get any of the markup money, once they've sold to the dealer that's the 'end' of their transaction. So it does hurt Toyota because they put out a product that then won't sell but not because of demand, but because the price becomes artificially higher than the buyers they were trying to get unfortunately. There will absolutely be people who buy over msrp anyhow though. (unless you meant why would the DEALER not sell above msrp, that's a totally different question)

    • @davidsucks922
      @davidsucks922 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They can't force dealers to sell at ADM, but I agree something needs to be done. They need to track dealers that add ADM to high demand models and stop sending those to them. Punish them by flooding them with Corollas and Camrys instead. Problem with ADM in this market is it doesn't hurt sales because every car competing with the Supra is marked up too, or is a long long wait

    • @stms4411

    • @davidsucks922
      @davidsucks922 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@stms4411 True, but doesn't mean it doesn't hurt manufacturers. ADM killed the Focus RS, Pontiac GTO, almost did the same for the Civic Type R first gen too. ADM on the EV6 and Ioniq5 is turning buyers into Teslas and Polestars while Kia and Hyundai are trying to gain a foothold in the EV market. Can't blame the dealers for being shortsighted but doesn't mean manufacturers should just sit back and watch it happen, it hurts them too. Dodge withheld Hellcats to dealers adding ADM and as a result you actually see them around a lot, no reason Toyota or any other manufacturer can't do the same

A driving enthusiast would be foolish to pass on any one of these cars if he or she had the opportunity to buy one before they are gone. Thanks again for the review. I'm coming from a tuned Type R FK8 and the Mini is everything I wanted and more. Not as stable as my CTR was, but more thrilling. With the B48 turbocharged engine the Mini has something in common with the Supra, the 4cyl B48 is part of a modular BMW engine family along with the 6cyl B58. The Mini B48 also features a reinforced crankshaft with larger main bearings and new pistons with a lower 9.5:1 compression ratio. This allows the engine to handle more boost. I have not driven a Supra but after feeling the B48 in the Mini I'm sure I would love it, these BMW turbo engines just make great smooth reliable power and my Mini has the capability to get mpg of 24 city 30 highway if I don't keep my foot in the gas all the time. My main reason for going with the Mini GP3 is that I wanted a fwd hot hatch that could perform on a level similar to my Type R but I did not want another Type R.

    I had replaced an engine in a 2015 335xi a few months back with the 6spd manual,it was the only one I had ever driven with the 3.0 and manuala combo.I have worked on many 2.0 and 3.0 cars mainly timing chain jobs but a handful of complete engine replacements as well. This particular car was a very nice car and I was anxious to drive it after the new engine and clutch install,after the job was complete I did drive the car for about a week before delivery as it was a $15k job and we don't want a come back for even the smallest issue. But to my point,after driving numerous automatic BMW products and then finally driving the 3.0 manual I can tell you in my opinion the manual hurt the car,the automatic is a fine transmission and well matched to the cars performance,the manual(at least in this particular car) was just more of a burden than it was anything else,the car felt slower and just felt wrong in the car. Again just my opinion but I would take the auto all day over the manual at least in that application,which is very similar to the Supra. Have there been any acceleration numbers yet? I would not be surprised to see it is slower than the automatic car,and yes I know there is much more to it than just 0-60 times,but for me that is a bog factor.

      @BWM135 ปีที่แล้ว

      The car is down 2 gears from the ZF8A, and the gear ratios will be taller. Bottom line?

    Hearing elsewhere that the fake vents were meant to give the aftermarket a built-in template to work from, it shows how misunderstood this car and immature its timeline remains. While the short wheelbase fails to recapture the stunning show car's exotic proportions and inspiration, it's still a sporty li'l bullet of a thing. Looks better in person.
    I would most revise both it & The Z from the back of the headlights forward. The track-inspired nose has been perfectly stunted. The Z's headlights have an awkward backward glance, a hangover from the industry's neo-retro trend 20 yrs ago.

      @@threadoflife I actually got my allocation and it delivered to dealer in Feb 2023 (about 10 months total wait time), but I backed out and received my deposit back in full (I have pretty good relationship w/ my Toyota dealer). Instead, I got an allocation and took home the 2023 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 in Python Green this past May. Very happy with my decision.
      Oddly enough, I bought a 2024 BMW M240i 2 weeks ago to replace my 2019 Civic Type R as my daily (we have winters). It has the same B58 engine and ended up with the same color specs, in Brooklyn Grey exterior and Tacora Red interior, as the Supra I initially ordered. I purposely didn't spec it that way but it's what BMW had in their showroom, so no allocation/build wait times for me fortunately. Happy with that purchase too, looks more under the radar. But the M240i has backseats and X-Drive for AWD, so still more functional than the Supra for daily driving.
      Regardless, nothing can really replace the Supra within the price point. If you put in your order this year, your dealer probably won't start getting them delivered until Feb-Apr 2024. So hopefully you get through all the obstacles and take home your Supra!

    Nissan Z forced Toyota's hand which is great, but I still want to see the manual take rate on both through the generation.
    Enthusiasts love manuals but enthusiasts don't buy new cars, especially new cars about $50K. What enthusiasts really love is to complain while not contributing to the market. Just take a look at the Corvette manual take rates over the last few generations followed by the enthusiast backlash to the auto only C8.

    • @LLG47

      The amount of people with money that are car enthusiasts are rare and they would have rather spend 60K heavily modifying a Honda S2000 than buy a new midrange sports car.
      So you are left with a small number of reasonable car enthusiasts but mostly people wanting a sports car for appearances only of which will likely choose competitors over the Supra and wont consider a manual at all.

      You overestimate how many younger people can responsibly buy $50K+ cars and will do so over putting there money into real estate, investments, or vacations first.
      Car first people are rarer than you think, and as I said the Supra has a ton of competition and many drawbacks.

      Maybe your right, but if you are, then why haven’t companies just made automatics only from decades now? Manual cars haven’t sold better than automatics for decades. Your philosophical argument doesn’t only apply to current sports cars. So why the need for manuals anyways anymore? Hell, why the need for ICE vehicles anymore too? Most EV’s are faster right?…
