Hello Tanya. In Belgium, we celebrate the National Day on July 21st. I realize that it is very similar to your celebration : family or friend meetings, barbecues, fireworks etc. It is an official day off for everyone (except urgent services, of course). Not really specific food. We have a military parade in front of the Royal Palace in Brussels. The royal family is watching the parade, sitting on a tribune with tiered seats. I love the term you used describing the 4th of when you were a child, "potluck food". In French, we use an almost similar expression but with a different meaning, "A la fortune du pot", which means receiving friends or family at home in a very informal way (no notion of everybody bringing a part of the meal). Thanks for your very interesting, pleasant and not too long podcasts. I always listen to them with a lot of pleasure.

In my country, Dominican Republic we celebrate independence day on feb 27. Some of our activities are streets parades, military paredes, president’s speech for the whole country. The poeple go outside de houses, drink beers and listen to music.

Dear Tanya,
It’s interesting to hear about how different countries celebrate Independence Day. Russia doesn’t have an Independence Day because it was never a colony of any country. In Russia, we celebrate Russia Day on June 12th. We also celebrate Victory Day over Nazi Germany on May 9th.

In my country Independence day is on Sep 07th. Fireworks and firecrackers we usually we make on June because we have Cultural parties around the firepit and New year Eve.
