Maxed Out - Forging a Stamp Tool from Scrap Metal

- This was a quick little build for a new tool I needed for my current project. One of the benefits of being a blacksmith is that you can make your own custom tools. The function of this tool is simple, it holds several stamps at a time in a concise way that allows me to make a clean strike with my hammer.
Max Randolph is a blacksmith artist who specializes in fantasy blacksmithing and sculptural metal art, located in Paso Robles, California.

That's super cool. I honestly never thought that you would need to make tools with different tools to build up your art. 😳
Something I always wondered is the mistakes you may have made with make tools, art pieces, etc. You have such masterpieces and I'm sure you have had to learn from countless mistakes. If you still have pieces that are mistakes around or can remember the stories that would be super interesting to hear. 🙂

Took me three takes to see that you, in fact, did not have a torch holster. I was really hoping it was 😞. The wing bolt however is going in the tool kit 😀. Love the tips. Keep em coming 👍

Looks great. Only mod I might have made, this is with my benefit of hindsight though, would be to drill out a bit of metal, countersink, where the wing nut goes in so you don't have to tap the threads so deep. However, I don't know how much force the letters will put on the wing nut with massive hammer blows, so in theory the thicker and more threads the better.

That’s a great idea! I wanted as much thread as possible because they really go through a lot of force over and over again. It would last a lot longer with more support. Good looking out Dave!

Thanks for the reply my stamps are about 10mm square and i was thinking of putting it between the jaws of my vice and hot stamping it

That looks so cool! I like the idea of a modular stamper. Question, do you have blanks that are shorter so you can 1 or 2 letters at a time? I assume so but I'm just curious
Exactly right! If I need a space I’ll toss in a smaller piece of 1/2”
Do you think that a similar design could hold 6 of the stamps and still work or would it create too many issues with putting in a clear impression
With 1/4” stamps maybe. But it would be hard to get a clear stamp with 6
