One of my best friends died from a stroke last Thursday - he was only 61 and was a pillar of our Blacksmith club. I heckled him countless times that I don't forge decorative, ornate things - only tools and hardware...Andy did both and was extraordinary at absolutely everything he did...and he finally got me to forge a rose. I'll be starting on this project tomorrow. Several members of the club are forging roses or leaves for a bouquet for Andy's widowed wife. Rest in peace my friend!

A rose by any other name is still a rose. Many have done it both ways. Your work is very nice indeed. In the form of " from a single bar" i could see that taking upwards of 10-12 hours. At a shop hourly rate of $80-$100 per hourthat would make a thousand dollar rose pretty easy. Betting selling one for that would be quite hard to do. This way works well too, though its less ornate in one veiw point its stil beautiful and the cost ratio would make it much easier to sell. Probly market price $50-$60. Thanks for the video John. I have a large speaker magnet on the side of my anvil that I bring up to the top and it helps to "stick" small pieces to the anvil and makes for less chasing.

I've made some ugly roses from 1" round bar, was thinking of trying flat bar. Maybe I should try this way first to build my skill. Nice work. I'm re watching this
“This is just art at this point.” Uhhh, my friend, EVERYTHING you do is art! Of course a barn door hinge is a bit more functional art than a steel rose, but still art none the less.
Arlene I'm right there with you. However I am no rose fan, much prefer wild flowers. Now I'd love to see a few of them forged like this. While I am not a blacksmith either, these videos are strangely mesmerizing and addictive.
I'm sorry but my leaves are not like a typical leaf... that is the nice thing about organic.... let your imagination make what you want it to look like.... I forge my leaves from 1/2" round... I do have a jig that I made to make the leaves look real... I do like the square punch idea... I will use that in the future for sure.... lovely video tho... thank you!
Blacksmith's elbow. Basically, tennis elbow and don't forget carpal tunnel. You want to use a hammer that isn't too heavy and the way you grip the hammer is important too. John did a video on it.

I've made a few flowers from the Kens custom iron blanks. Came out great.
140 bucks later and I got 5 new tongs, some sleighs and roses for the kids to make! Wow what a deal!

If forge welding, I would raise the thorn by cutting with a chisel
When using a chisel, I always use a sacrificial plate on my anvil!!!!!!🇨🇦
When cutting through i always use a plate. If I'm not going to cut through into the anvil, I generally don't worry about it.
