My parents used to often play this song on the hifi when I was only 4 or 5 and in the last 15 years I have been searching for it with no luck because I didn’t know who the singers were and I had thought it was called Heaven fell last night! Which is one of the songs but not my favourite. I love this song brings back fond memories of my parents who are no longer around

I’m trying to imagine KISS covering this song. Pyrotechnics, thundering explosions, shouting (as opposed to singing), etc. So painfully bad, but still good for a laugh.

This song always reminded our mother of our father Jimmy whitsett. Little did we know that in his short life it would indeed fit his life. I listen to this with tears as both our mother and father have passed. He to met my mother in a small valley community and were married in a small country chruch. He became a preacher but at the age of 42 he was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer and died five days later. His funeral was held in a small town chruch not any bigger than a village and many turned out to say their goodbyes. Our Mother passed away a few years back, and it won't be long before I too will go to join them . This song did cause my eyes to fiil with tears but yet at the same time it was heartwarming to listen to it, because it takes me back when both were here and all was happy. We didn't have a lot, never wanted a lot, but our valley called eagle creek was indeed the happiest times of my two sisters and myself lifes , and all the love and kindness shown from the people of eagle creek valley we could always know and feel from the people who lived there the love and caring for each other as well you could feel the goodness in each and everyone of them. It was the best days of our life's and we were very blessed to have them and to look back now sometimes its sad because everything changes but we will always cherish and treasure those memories.

As a young child, I learned the lyrics quickly and was always singing along with it, but always cried at the end. I miss those songs that had stories of life, good and bad. Thanks for making me bawl like a baby early evening, Saturday July 16, 2016. Just heard that his remaining sister died today at age 77. I was 11 years old when Little Jimmy Brown was a hit in Los Angeles. About the same time as great oldies but goodies were beginning to churn out, of every genre of music. I absolutely LOVE this song. Before The Beatles. Before the Rolling Stones. About the time the Four Seasons were singing Sherry Baby. My mommy died when I was not quite six years old in 1957. She was only 27; a Mississipian. I saw her beautiful body, spirit and soul in an open casket in Culver City, California. Somehow, when Little Jimmy Brown played on the radio in LA on the Top 40, I fell in love with this song. It comforted me so much. I went on to become a rock and roller; singing solo on the same stage at Pacoima Jr High as Ritchie Valens had, six years before, recording live versions of La Bamba and Donna. At age 12. Had the same Home Room number 21 aa Ritchie, and same Home Room Teacher, Mr. Webb. (a kind black teacher, by color). The Valens family lived four blocks from me on Artesia Ave. I picked up my first guitar at age 15; really learned how to play at age 20. And have been playing guitar now for 45 years. But The Browns was my first spiritual, musical awakening. Then came George Harrison, musically speaking. God Bless the entire Brown Family, and friends. R.I.P., dear Sister Brown. Much love, and many, many things. You have a great new family, happily waiting for you in Heaven. DR

About 10 years ago my folks were fortunate to see Jim Ed Brown and his sisters perform. My parents ran into Jim as everyone was leaving. Mom and Jim began talking and found out that they were from the same area of their youth. Mr. Brown was so kind to my folks and invited them to have supper in a small diner with he and his sisters. My folks and the Browns ended up talking most of the night away. My mom passed away on Aug 11, 2016. She frequently spoke of that evening and this song was played for her funeral. I find myself smiling at the thought of them talking each other’s ears off now.

That’s a wonderful story, thank you so much for sharing it with us. We tend to forget that so many of the country music artists are “ just plain folks, at heart ♥️ “. Thankfully so.😊
It is great for that highlight in your mom’s life. ♥️

I just heard of Jim Ed's passing. He was an incredible singer, the "epitome" of a classy southern Gentleman. I never had the honor of meeting Jim Ed but I'll really miss him. My sincere condolences to Maxine, Bonnie & everyone that was close to him. Rest in peace 'Sir'. We love you and we'll miss you. Will not forget you.

From my earliest recollections as a young child, I have loved this song and own the CD. The Old Lamplighter is another beautiful song they did. When you have the time, listen to it; you won't be disappointed. They had a sound that has never been, nor will ever be imitated by anyone ever.

In their time was the last golden grate era of music that will ever exist. This is when music was at it's purest form. Simple meaningful lyrics and song that moved the soul in way's you can't put into words. This is absolute greatness right here, the masters of thair craft.

Aug 29, 2020 ~ There was a small group of us that used to hang out at swimming hole pond called Lake View, Foxboro, "Ma. My class of 1962 was under a 100.
I visited it Lake View back in 1991. It was no longer a popular swimming hole. It was just another Mud bottom Mill Pond of yesteryear.
This song 3 Bells helps me see the ghosts of my teenage past. Thanks Ms GlenBill1 for the memories

I am going on 64 in 2 months and grew up in Brooklyn in New York City. Back then in the 50s and 60s, New York City had no country music station as it wasn't a popular music genre for most New Yorkers. It was considered Southern or hillbilly music. We had 4 pop stations in New York. They played all the top popular songs of almost all genres and sometimes a country song that was so popular was played on these stations. The Browns had 3 songs that made it on the NYC stations, The 3 Bells, The Old Lamplighter and Scarlet Ribbons. I was a young New Yorker who happened to like folk and country music whenever I heard it. I believe I still have the original 45 of Scarlet Ribbons. Of those 4 stations, WMCA, WMGM and WABC are gone now and WINS became all news radio in 1964 and remains so today. WMGM became WHN and switched to talk radio and then country radio in the 70s. It morphed into religious broadcasting for a time and by then, most folks switched over from AM stations to FM stations with stereo. I'm not sure if NYC still has a country music station now as I moved to Florida at the end of 2013. I do know that I was fond of the Browns music and am sad at Jim Ed's passing. RIP Jimmy.
