- Dolly Parton on vacation in Ireland ..walks into a pub in County Kerry and is asked to sing a song. What a beautiful lady. The guy on the guitar is Steve Cooney. I do believe the year was 1990. For all you people out there the name Séamus is Irish for James. (Look up Séamus Begley Singer/Musician here on TH-cam. Another star in his own right)
11 Grammy awards and she sings for free while on holiday. She is a legend, make no mistake.. such class.

I didn't like her at first as I only knew her based on her appearance. She looks like a lizard that went through a dozen of plastic surgeries. But after discovering her music and getting to know her character as part of interviews, I grew fond of her.

They named a sheep Dolly that was genetically cloned, in neighbouring Scotland I believe. Anyway, the turning of the speaker behind her increased the volume of her song. I worried for her that her song choice put off some people. What song choice would you have chosen? Dolly has so many amazing songs.

I think this took place in Dingle, Co Kerry. Her name was on the pavement along with Julie Roberts , Robert Mitchum and John Mills.

Funny because as someone who lives one town over and has seen pictures of her as a very young child she is blonde.

Thank you to them both and to the people in the pub in county Kerry for your unknowing support for a grieving mother. Much love 💕🐝💕🐞💕🇺🇸ps, Iv’e had 6 female family members die in the last 2-1/2 years including two last month. Louise (my mom), Laura (my only child), Barbara (a sister-in-law), Olga (my mother-in-law), Shirley (an aunt), and Kathi who is the sister of my heart (an “ex” sister-in-law). They took a piece of my heart, but left some of theirs behind to help soothe the world.
I can't imagine, only know that music's been incredibly healing to me too. I hope good things come your way and wishing you and your family well.

The Irish are just like her people back in butcher holler. And the folk music of Ireland and Scotland forms the basis of country music from Appalachia and, like jazz, uniquely American. Dolly is among her people and they understand her. That song, written about her severely impoverished childhood in Appalachia, could have easily been written about childhood memories of Ireland. Perfect alignment among singer and her audience, expressing essential values of maternal love, gratitude and humility. Sentiments both very real and transcendent. Dolly and the Irish bless us.

I've loved Dolly since I was a little kid. She just beams. When she passes away, hopefully in the very distant future, she'll surely have a crowd of souls numbering in the millions, just waiting to welcome her in heaven.
She's one of the most genuinely good and decent people out there. Lived in Tennessee for a while and came to know a little more about her philanthropy and her life. Truly a remarkable woman. Loves to entertain and loves the limelight, but does a lot of good with no intention whatsoever of seeking praise or attention for it.

Loretta Lynn was from Butchers Holler Kentucky. Dolly is from around Sevierville, Tennessee. Both are small towns in the Appalachia Mountains. Dolly has done so much for her home state and her home county. When fire swept through the Smokey Mountains, Dolly helped so many people build their businesses and homes back. She has given so much to the education of children and the economy of Tennessee! Recently Tennessee wanted to put a statue of her in Nashville in the state capital and Dolly very humbly declined the honor. That is just how she is, a generous soul who gives and gives but so many of her contributions are done privately because she does it out of the goodness of her heart not for any fame or glory. Speaking as a Tennessean myself, I can think of no one else who is as respected and loved in our state as Dolly Parton. What a true blessing to the world she is.

She also gave books to so many poor children that she drastically raised the literacy rate in tennessee. And she recently donated a TON to covid research. She’s literally one of the only people on earth I think is deserving of being called a saint. She has done nothing but help people around her. Even people who had wronged her. She still helped them in their times of need. I’m not religious, but I honestly believe she’s the closest thing to jesus we’ve gotten.
Had to include this. With the money this lovely lass makes, she gives it back to our young children, the next generation via The Imagination Library. Free age appropriate books monthly to children from birth to 5 yrs in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Republic of Ireland. Any caregiver can apply and receive said books in record time.
Would love to see other wealthy celebrities follow in her footsteps.

In all fairness Steve Cooney could play with anybody ! He’s one of the most versatile musicians in the world. But what a performance from Dolly in an Irish country pub, no sound man, a mediocre PA system ,no ego and a lone guitarist ! It shows how good both of them really are! Fantastic performance.
This pub is as Irish as it gets..It's in the heart of an area in Kerry where Irish is spoken as the first language..Also some of greatest and best Irish Traditional Musicians, Singers & Dancers come from the area..The guy who owned the pub Paudi O She's ( also a famous Irish Gaelic Footballer) died suddenly a few years ago..Imagine someone of the calibre of Dolly Parton walking into your local pub..being asked to sing with musicians she had never heard of..She sure is a beautiful lady in heart & soul..
She's so confident, so poised... and she's very conscious of EVERY performance no matter how big or small. She's up there with Elvis, really. Only way more with it than Elvis ever was!

My wife and I spent 10 days in Ireland on vacation 3 years ago. The absolute BEST vacation either of us have ever had. We learned the Irish are a music loving people, and can play/sing with just about anyone. Saw a young lady walk into a pub, talk with the duet playing, and within 5 minutes had the entire bar singing along. Incredible place, Incredible people.

Exactly. My husband is Irish. On our visit to my in laws last year, few hours off the plane trip from Australia, we ducked around to the nearby GAA (sports club) for a drink and within 10 minutes we were being sent rounds from families of his childhood friends or old club members and coaches who’d spotted him. Within 20 minutes, five men with guitars strolled in for a drink and had begun a “session” - playing and singing together. Such a fantastic atmosphere. It’s just how it is there, spontaneous, not pre-planned.

That was Steve Cooney from Australia who came to Ireland in early 80s to trace his Irish heritage.. He stayed.. He is an incredibly talented musician.. Dolly is an absolute legend.. That was in Paudie O Sheas pub in Dingle.. He was a famous footballer sadly no longer around

I was at a FUNERAL and my guitar was in my car after a sesiún (Irish music get together) and they got me to sing a few tunes then we went to their house and we had 7 people playing music and loads doing set and shean ós dancing and there were possibly a few drinks .. but Irish culture in my opinion is the most lively/ fun thing EVER !!!!
You are so right..because the voice you hear in a recording now days is not what you hear in real time. It just goes to show how classy this lady is..This is no ordinary Irish pub..The Irish/Gaelic language is spoken fluently in it..and the owner (who is now deceased) was a famous Gaelic Footballer with his native county...Kerry.

I am a 56 year old metal head from the 80's and 90's and I absolutely love Dolly Parton. She is goodness personified.
This is wonderful! Dolly is just a sweetie. The Irish love a good tune.
Some years ago my sister and her husband, a well-known musician from the area we live in on Vancouver Island (Canada) went on a trip to Ireland. At one pub they got chatting with the fellows there who were providing the musical entertainment and it was revealed that they were down a man so could not do their regular set. My cheeky sister told them they could "borrow my man" and told them how many instruments he could play.
So they did.
They had a great time, and even let my brother-in-law sing. He ended up teaching them one of the songs HIS band plays all the time. Anyway, they stopped in that town longer than planned because they asked him to come back the next two nights as well - and they tried to pay him but he didn't take it, so they kept the pints flowing, and declared him "honorary band leader".😂
When my sister and her husband had to continue on their journey, and it was determined where their next several stops were, the fellows in the band gave him contacts for some other pubs along the way, and so he ended up playing in at least 3 more places. They had an absolute blast.

I am English and had a similar experience, I was alone as I was visiting my young son who lived with my ex-wife who had moved to Ireland. I wanted to see what it was like in a real Irish pub. There I was having a beer and got chatting. There were some guys playing and I just happened to mention that I played guitar. A guitar was produced as if out of nowhere and I spent the rest of the evening trying to keep up with the locals and this was not easy. I didn't have to buy a drink for the rest of night and got quite merry. Someone guided me back to the B & B I was staying in as all I could remember was the name of the Landlady. At breakfast the next morning the Landlady had heard all about it. A great nation.

That's Steve cooney. He is indeed a great guitarist. There's a lot of great pub musicians in Ireland. And when you do make it, as he did playing trad, the scene's small enough you'll probably be playing occasional gigs in pubs anyway. Unless you're just continually touring abroad.
When it comes to tunes and ballads anyway. I've seen the likes of Andy Irvine and Donal lunny in pubs. Or Frankie Gavin or alec Finn. Big names, but they'll still take the odd small gig. Or maybe they'll just drop in for the craic if there's a session on anyway.

That was during the 1950's when America was totally different . It was a time when local laws were so strict that there were no stores open on Sundays and no work done except cooking the Sunday meal . But, as the song says: that was "long long ago". I now live in a country where God has been placed in exile . A country where corruption and dishonesty are more common than their corollaries . So now, I too, have learned to be skeptical of what I see and hear . The "school of life" taught those things. When my son was about 11 years old he entered a Jaycee Relay Race. He’d never ran track before and didn’t know everybody wore shorts. He came in jeans, to everyone’s amusement. He ran the last leg for his team - and came away the fastest runner of the day, and made up considerable distance to win. This video made me think of that day. How I wish I had been able to see it, instead of only hear and read about it. I was a single mom and had to work. My son was an amazing athlete. ❤️

She actually bought "dollywood" (her amusement park in Tenn.)so that area would have jobs. Now that's thinking about others, then making it happen. WOW
I know someone who works directly for her. I have been to her studio in Nashville. She is genuine and humble. She is a woman of faith. She provided me with an autographed picture for another friend of mine who has a special needs daughter with Rhetts syndrome ( a form of autism) that was a fan of hers. The girl couldn’t talk but loved Dolly’s music and the CD she also was given. I like her humor and she seems down to earth to me. I wish more so called celebrities would be more like her.

Although that looked completely off the cuff, she looked in full make up, guitarist knew what he was doing and a nice camera to film it. Nevertheless, the small setting with no gimmicks or effects is a setting every musician big or small should be able to perform in. Sadly not many can.

When I was in elementary and middle school my grandmother and mother made all my clothes and everyone made fun of me I know how Dolly felt because I loved what they made for me. My mother loved Dolly and she made a skirt with different color strips of fabric that somewhat matched for me and herself.
I know how you and Dolly both felt because my Mom made some of my clothes and her best friend Rose,who was touring with us,made my other things. I would also be one of those who got made fun of in school because I wore hand made jeans,shirts and dresses. They may not have been as fine as store bought,but I liked em just fine. I was also always the new kid in school. We toured the entire Western half of the US,and I would only make half the semester and we'd be off again to another town. No home base,no friends.

Raising a child is a monumental task when you are poor and Dollys mother and Father did a fine job. They should be saluted.

Standing just to her right was another famous person, and I think owner of the pub, was Paudie O'Shea, multiple Kerry All-Ireland football winner and a star i his own right. I think he was star struck by her too!

I was stationed in Alaska forty years ago. One day at work a friend told me I should have been at The Pines the night before. He said Hank Williams Jr. was up doing some hunting and he had stopped in. The band invited him up and he played a whole set.

Steven Cooney, originally from Australia, is a superb musician and is one half of the celebrated duo, Begley and Cooney; I'm assuming the Seamus Dolly speaks to at the beginning of the clip is Seamus Begly, a superb accordionist with a very distinctive playing style, alas we don't get to hear him here. Steve Cooney is widely regarded as one of the best trad Irish guitarist, and is widely sought after by the top musicians to do session work, he is very used to rubbing shoulders with famous musicians. At 3:38 the man to Dolly's right is Paídi Ó Sé, the proprietor of the establishment, and who is famous in his own right, having won the All Ireland Gaelic Football Championship eight times as a player, and twice as a manager. There is an extended clip of this in which Paídi introduces Dolly (first in Irish, and then in English) and presents her with his football jersey which he wore when he captained Kerry to victory in 1985.

She's so humble! How many other "stars" would consent to a fan's impromtu request like this without requiring a full band, contracts drawn up, managerial consultation and multi angle cameras and lights?
i know many who would do it but the "stars" are very different here in Sweden my favorite band was on their way to a gig and had to stop and full up the tank so they had a little mini acoustic concert outside of the gas station. just one of many examples they are internationally unknown but they had people from Sabaton playing on their songs and they been on Sabatons live gigs

Free age appropriate books monthly to children from birth to 5 yrs in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Republic of Ireland. Any caregiver can apply and receive said books in record time.

I think the difference is that when they're in the pub here they're left be, at least it was that way. They're less on edge and more likely to do it I guess.
I was there for Sting in a pub called ah fuck what was it called, Sin é. I knew he was playing the marquee but I wasn't there. I remember in the bar and the music stop and this old lad was on the stage with a guitar, he done a song and I thought jesus he was very good.
I didn't cop to it till I was told.

What an unexpected and precious moment. I am so glad someone had the presence of mind to record this -- this video being from 1990, not everyone had video recording capability on their cell phone. Hell, not everyone had a cell phone, let alone in Ireland.

This was definitely recorded on a video camera. We didn't even have mobile (cell) phones yet in Ireland unless you were a big business person, and they were still those chunky 80s ones.
For Dolly, it looks like it was a fun and enjoyable evening. For the rest of the people there, it was a night they'd talk about for the rest of their lives.
It's very touching to see her so nervous as she sang for them, as to me it's more nerve wracking singing to a small intimate group like this than something even larger. It brought tears to my eyes because she didn't have to but she was being gracious and with an open heart. Bless her and everyone there.❤️
